Used in professional audio equipment for more than 15 years• Dante, Ravenna, AES67, AVB are current AoIP technologies
• Carry 100s of audio channels between 100s of devices

44.1kHz, 16-bit is the digital audio standard for CD
48kHz, 24-bit is the most common standard for professional audio• Supported by DVD, Blu-Ray, etc
• 6 channels needed for 5.1 surround sound

48,000 x 24 = 1,152,000• About 1.2Mbps
So a stereo signal uses about 2.3Mbps of data
Extra Ethernet “packing” means about 3Mbps is required per stereo signal

• One transmission can be received anywhere in the network, by multiple devices
• Uses up bandwidth

Synchronisation
All digital audio & video devices need to be synchronized
• “House Clock”, “Word Clock Generators”
Now the Network carries the sync messages
• PTP: Precision Time Protocol

AVB
Pros:• Provides dedicated bandwidth for audio & video traffic
• Useful for independent media systems from one manufacturer
Cons• Needs special network hardware
• Extra hardware needed for most computers
• Used by just a few equipment manufacturers
• No universal software for control & management

Pros:• Flexible configuration options
• Supported by several equipment manufacturers
• Compatible with AES67
Cons• Each manufacturer uses different setup software
• Central management/routing software for a few products only

Pros:• Universal software for control, monitoring, routing
• Domain Management software now available
• Huge number of available products from 100s of manufacturers
• Easy computer audio interface, bridging between audio software
• Redundant networks can be built with fail-safe recovery
Cons• AES67 compatibility is currently limited

AES67
Remember AES67 is not a complete solution by itself
You also need device discovery, connection management, control software
Different groups have different solutions
Must use Multicast audio for best compatibility
Dedicated Master Clock device is recommended

Pros• The standard is free to use
• Many manufacturers are experimenting with AES67
Cons• No unified software to control & manage audio routing
• System design and setup is more complex
• No mechanism for redundancy

A suite of standards for professional media over managed IP networks
The audio part is based on AES67 • (slightly modified)
Device Discovery, Management, Control is all under development by “AMWA”• Called “NMOS”
Not ready for practical deployment
