Building Blocks

Cables for Audio Networks

CAT5E or CAT6• For Gigabit Ethernet: 1Gbps

• Up to 100m length

Fibre-Optics• Om3 standard, multi-mode (300m)

• Or single-mode for longer distance (2km)

Switches for Audio Networks

AVB networks require special switches• Other than regular IT products

Ravenna, AES67 require managed switches always

Dante: small networks can use simple unmanaged switches

Some Details

Audio Networking Technology

Page 12: Networked Audio - SCHOMS · Multicast / Unicast Unicast • One transmission is sent to only one receiver • Efficient use of bandwidth 15 ISE’18SCHOMS 2/9/2018. Synchronisation

Bandwidth

44.1kHz, 16-bit is the digital audio standard for CD

48kHz, 24-bit is the most common standard for professional audio• Supported by DVD, Blu-Ray, etc

• 6 channels needed for 5.1 surround sound

Bandwidth

13

ISE’18 SCHOMS

2/9/2018

48,000 x 24 = 1,152,000• About 1.2Mbps

So a stereo signal uses about 2.3Mbps of data

Extra Ethernet “packing” means about 3Mbps is required per stereo signal

Page 14: Networked Audio - SCHOMS · Multicast / Unicast Unicast • One transmission is sent to only one receiver • Efficient use of bandwidth 15 ISE’18SCHOMS 2/9/2018. Synchronisation

Multicast / Unicast

Multicast

• One transmission can be received anywhere in the network, by multiple devices

• Uses up bandwidth

Synchronisation

All digital audio & video devices need to be synchronized

• “House Clock”, “Word Clock Generators”

Now the Network carries the sync messages

• PTP: Precision Time Protocol

AES67

Remember AES67 is not a complete solution by itself

You also need device discovery, connection management, control software

Different groups have different solutions

Must use Multicast audio for best compatibility

Dedicated Master Clock device is recommended
