Vicom Appliance-based Migration• Centralized appliance-based control

• Independent data movement

• Host-transparent: no configuration changes

• Any-to-any storage migration

• Fail-safe with fallback option

Manual Data Migration• Labor-intensive, server-by-server task

• Configuration data needed for each host

• Process unique for each host type

• Error-prone, data entry process

• Degrades CPU performance

Vicom Data Migration Service

• Service-based solution, not a product• Key enablers: SAN synthesis and automation

SAN Synthesis: Migrate data from any to any within SAN or between SANs

Automation: Actual migration takes hours, not weeks!

• Vicom appliance removed, with no trace in servers, disks or SAN

• Proven in hundreds of enterprise migrations

Success Stories

Page 11

Wells Fargo• Provider of banking and financial products and services across

North America and Internationally. Ranked 41st in revenue by Forbes.

• ChallengesStorage Refresh from Xiotech to NetApp, 40 servers 10+ TB. Migrate data center from production site to shore view, Minneapolis. Business requirements: outage window ( < 6 hours), schedule (many small migrations, 3-month project).Absolutely no agents or software installation, and wanted to test the solution before actual implementation.Support for legacy server (Novell Netware), Boot LUN migration and Xiotech storage.Remote migrated 19 servers data as of September 20.

• Winning Formula: POC, NetApp/Vicom collaboration, Openness to end user

Wells Fargo DeploymentCustomer Quote“Really good news. Thank NetApp and Vicom so very much. Excellent work and tremendous effort.”– Partner

“Everything went very well, and Vicom handled their part of the work without any problems. It was obvious that Vicom people are knowledgeable and experienced (in data migrations), and their software tools and DME appliance all look to work very well. I have nothing but good things to report, and I would strongly recommend Vicom for other SAN migrations.”- NetApp, Solution Architect

Page 13

Assurant• Premier Provider of specialty insurance and insurance-related

products and services. A Fortune 500 company and a member of the S&P 500

• HighlightsStorage Refresh from HP EVA to NetApp, 10 TB data for 12 servers (Solaris & Windows).Business outage window cannot be more than 8 hours for each server.HP EVA storage lease expired, and customer was renewing the maintenance contract for past six months.HP EVA and NetApp are connected to different SAN.Migrate data in two data centers (Atlanta & Miami) in two different week-ends.

• Winning Formula: Reference, Live Demo, Explaining Vicom process

Vicom Migration Process – LUN Discovery• Action Items (M-3 Weeks)

• NetApp – Prepare Site Survey.• Vicom – Send Quote• NetApp – Send PO• Vicom – Send Information Gathering Script for Server & Notes.• NetApp – Collect server configuration by running the script.

• Site Survey Form

• Information Gathering Script & Notes• Scripts for Windows, VMWARE, LINUX, AIX, Solaris & HP-UX.• Server Configuration HBA, LVM, File System, Drive (Name, Size, SN).• LUN information from Source Storage Frame (EMC, IBM, NetApp)

Vicom Migration Process – PlanningAction Items (M-2 Weeks)

• NetApp – Carve LUN and send LUN information.• Vicom – Use Surveyor to collect & verify configuration data (IBM/EMC/Vicom INQ).• Vicom – Generate & Send Migration plan.• Vicom – Send Best Practice for Server Shutdown, Bring-up, and any ‘known’ issues.

Migration Plan• Action Items: Tasks, responsibility & due date.• Setup Diagram: Connector, Fabric, Storage ports, Migration Engine & Cable.

Page 21

Vicom Migration Process – PreparationAction Items (M-1 Week)

• Vicom – Ship Migration Engines.• NetApp – Complete FC/Ethernet cabling for the DME as per the diagram.• NetApp – Configure Fabric & Storage so that DME can see source & destination LUN.• Vicom – Verify Connectivity & Configuration.

Automated Import Tools• Import Vicom Drive Inquiry, IBM Specialist Format, IBM DS4000 Format, NetApp

Format*.• Advanced Import.

Seven Levels of Protection• Storage to Storage (Not LUN based)• Storage Type – Source• Storage Type – Destination• Storage WWPN• Drive Source Serial Number• Drive Destination Serial Number• Data in the Destination Drive*

Page 22

Vicom Migration Process – MigrationAction Items (Migration day)

• Vicom – Coordinate server shutdown (Best Practice).• Vicom – Migrate data from source storage to destination storage.• NetApp – Update HBA BIOS, HBA Driver, FC Driver, MP Driver, OS fixes,.• Vicom – Verify Migration completion and perform post-migration tasks (label

Solaris disk)• NetApp – Configure FC switch and destination storage to allow server access

destination storage LUN.• NetApp – Bring-up the server (Best Practice) and Verify user data.• NetApp – Ship Migration tool back to Vicom.

Fast Migration• Migration Start Timer Protection (1 minute if fabric attached).• Tool (4-engine) is able to migrate data at 1.2 TB/hour, Scalable to match

storage speed.• Manage Migration by reordering, aborting the migration, alter migration thread

and speed.

Page 23

Vicom Migration Process – MigrationBest Practice – Windows Boot LUN Migration1. Update HBA BIOS, if needed. 2. Connect Server HBA to destination SAN (if source SAN is different from destination

SAN). Zone (FC) server HBA and destination storage ports together. Configure LUN masking so that server can access LUNs from the destination storage.

3. If there are multiple paths to destination storage, connect only one path and temporarily disconnect all other paths.

4. Configure HBA BIOS setting such that HBA can recognize boot LUN from destination storage (by WWPN).

5. Bring-up server; boot from destination storage.6. Install proper multipath driver (Snap Drive) for the destination storage, then shutdown

the server.7. Reconnect all other paths to the destination storage, and bring-up the system again.8. Run chkdisk to verify the file system.9. Examine log files (system, application) for errors and warnings.10. Start applications and verify user data.
