About This ManualThe NetNumenTM U31 R18 Unified Element Management System (NetNumen U31 orEMS) is a special network element management system that manages network elementsin radio access systems. By using NetNumen U31, users can configure and maintainindividual network elements, and manage radio access networks in a unified manner.NetNumen U31 provides the following management functions:

l Configuration managementl Fault managementl Performance managementl Topology managementl Security management

As an object-oriented system designed on the JAVA 2 platform Enterprise Edition (J2EE),NetNumen U31 provides unified standard interfaces to external devices.

Purpose

This operation guide provides instructions on the basic operations of NetNumen U31, suchas starting and exiting the server, the client, and the client portal, setting the preferencesof the system, managing the client interface, and locking the screen.

1.1 Starting and Exiting the ServerStarting the Server

Make sure that the following requirements are met before starting the NetNumen U31server.

l The Oracle Database is running properly.l The NetNumen U31 server program has been installed.

To start the NetNumen U31 server, you can use either the Graphic User Interface (GUI)based method or the method not using the GUI. It is recommended to use the non-GUImethod.

l Starting the server not using the GUI:

Log in to the operating system as the root user.

Change the current directory to the NetNumen U31 installation path \ums-server,and then execute the command: nohup ./console.sh &.

l Starting the server via GUI:

Log in to the EMS server using the GUI tool.

Change the current directory to the NetNumen U31 installation path \ums-server,and then execute the command: console-client.sh. The console will be started.

The server console window appears, as shown in Figure 1-1.

Exiting the Server

The NetNumen U31 server is recommended to keep running 24 hours a day and 7 daysa week. In special cases, you can shut down the server temporarily.

To exit the NetNumen U31 server, you can use either the Graphic User Interface (GUI)based method or the method not using the GUI.

l Exiting the server not using the GUI: Change the current directory to the NetNumenU31 installation path \ums-server, and then execute the command: shutdown-console.sh.

l Exiting the server via GUI: In the console window, select System > Close. Next, clickOK in the pop-up dialog box.

1.2 Starting and Exiting the ClientStarting the Client

Make sure that the NetNumen U31 server is running properly and then start the client asfollows:

1. On the desktop of the Windows operating system, click Start, point to All Programs> NetNumen Unified Management System, and then click NetNumen Client.

2. In the pop-up Login dialog box as shown in Figure 1-2, type the user name, password,and the IP address of the server, and then click OK.

3. For the first login, a message box appears, informing the user that the client is gettingthe configuration information from the server. After the client successfully gets theconfiguration information, a Confirm dialog box appears. Click OK to continue thelogin process.

After successful login, the client appears with the Topology Management windowdisplayed by default, as shown in Figure 1-3.

Note:l When the password of the user account expires, the systemwill prompts you to modify

the password. Only after modifying the password can you start the client and connectit to the server.

l In routine maintenance, maintenance personnel are not recommended to start theclient as the admin user. Only the system administrator with the highest priority isallowed to start the client as the admin user.

Refer to NetNumen U31 Unified Element Management System Security ManagementOperation Guide for detailed instructions on user authority control.

Caution!

Be sure to modify the password of the admin user after successful login for the first time toensure the account security. To modify the password, select System > User PasswordSetting.

Exiting the Client

To exit the client, perform the following steps:

1. On the client window, click System > Exit or click on the upper right corner.

2. In the pop-up Confirm dialog box, click OK to exit the client.

1.3 Starting and Exiting the Client PortalNetNumen U31 provides a client portal as a unified login interface. After starting theclient portal, you can start the client or other specific management modules by clickingcorresponding links. The started client or other management modules can communicatewith the server and load data from the server directly.

Starting the Client Portal

Make sure that the NetNumen U31 server is running properly and then start the clientportal as follows:

1. On the desktop of the Windows operating system, click Start, point to All Programs >NetNumen Unified Management System, and then click NetNumen Client Portal.

2. In the pop-up Login dialog box, enter the user name, password, and the IP addressof the server, and then click OK.

Table 1-2 explains the parameters in the Login dialog box.

Exiting the Client Portal

To exit the client portal, perform the following steps:

1. On the Portal window, click on the toolbar, or click on the upper right corner.2. In the pop-up Confirm dialog box, click OK to exit the client portal.

1.4 Implicit PrerequisitesFor all systemmanagement operations, the following conditions may be presumed to havebeen met.

l The NetNumen U31 client has been started and successfully connected to the server.l You have necessary system management permissions.

2.1 Setting System ParametersAbstractThe system setting allows you to set some system parameters. You can determine thewait time before automatic lock or logout of the system, and set the maximum number ofsystem messages and records displayed on the client window.

Steps1. On the menu bar of the client window, click System > Customize > System Setting,

and the System Setting dialog box opens.

2. On the Autolock Setting tab in the System Setting dialog box, select the Enabledcheck box, type the wait time in the Lock time text box, and then select the lock type,as shown in Figure 2-1.

EnableSelect this check box if you want to enable the automatic screen

lock function.

Lock timeSet the wait time before the system locks the screen automatically

(value range: 1 to 6000 minutes).

Lock type

l Lock Screen: If you select this lock type, the system will lock

the screen automatically when the wait time expires and the

current client window disappears.

l Lock Operation: If you select this lock type, the system will

lock the current client window automatically when the wait time

expires. And then you cannot do any operation on the window

until the client window is unlocked.

3. Click the Auto Logout tab. Select the Idle Time check box and then enter the waittime in the text box to enable the automatic logout function. The valid wait time valueranges from 1 to 5000 minutes.

4. Click theMessage Area tab, as shown in Figure 2-2. Next, type the maximum numberof prompt messages and the maximum number of error messages that can be shownin the Show Message box (value range: 1 to 5000).

5. Click the Query Settings tab. Next, type the maximum number of query results thatcan be shown on each page (value range: 50–500).

6. Click OK to complete the system setting.

2.2 Setting the Information of the Login UserAbstract

This function allows you to set the information of the current login user, such as the Emailaddress and phone number.

Steps

1. On the menu bar of the client window, click System > Customize > Login User InfoSetting, and the Login User Info Setting dialog box opens, as shown in Figure 2-3.

2. In the Login User Info Setting dialog box, enter the Email address and phone numberof the login user.

3. Click OK to complete the setting of the user information.

2.3 Setting Performance Management PreferencesAbstract

This function allows you to set the default display status of tasks, counters, and indexesmanaged by the performance management module.

Steps

1. On the menu bar of the client window, select System > Customize > PerformanceManagement Preferences, and the Performance Management Preferences dialogbox opens, as shown in Figure 2-4.

2. Select the default display status of the Performance Management window from thecorresponding drop-down lists.

For example, if you select “All current tasks” for measurement tasks, the PerformanceManagement window will list all current measurement tasks by default after it isopened.

3. Select the time format used in the result file from the Time format drop-down boxunder Result File(s) of Template Task.

4. ClickOK to complete the setting of the performancemanagement display preferences.

2.4 Setting Alarm Sounds and ColorsAbstractThis function allows you to customize the alarm sounds and colors for indicating faults.

Steps1. On the menu bar of the client window, click System > Customize > Fault Sound

Color Setting, and the Alarm Sound and Color Setting dialog box opens, as shownin Figure 2-5.

2. On the Sound Setting tab of the Alarm Sound and Color Setting dialog box, selectthe sounds for different alarm severity levels.

For example,

a. To select the sound for critical alarms, click the Choose button corresponding toCritical. In the pop-up Open dialog box, select the sound file and click Open.

b. To listen the sound file selected for critical alarms, click the correspondingAudition button.

c. To mute the sound of critical alarms, select the corresponding Mute check box.

d. To determine when the system generates alarm sounds, set the sound modelby selecting Sound According to the Highest Severity of UnacknowledgedAlarms or Receiving Alarm Message.

e. To restore the default settings of alarm sounds (that is, use the default sound files),click the Restore to default button.

f. To mute all alarm sounds, select the All Mute check box.

g. To make the system sound when an alarm is restored (cleared), select the Soundwhen restoring check box, and then set the sound file by clicking the Settingbutton.

3. Click the Color Setting tab, as shown in Figure 2-6. Next, set the colors for differentalarms.

For example, to set the color of Minor alarms, do one of the following:

l Click the Minor drop-down box and select a new color by clicking thecorresponding color box.

l Click the Minor drop-down box, click Other Colors to open the Color Setupdialog box as shown in Figure 2-7, select or set a new color in the Color Setupdialog box and then click OK.

Note:

The Swatches tab in the Color Setup dialog box already shows some colors forchoosing. If you does not found the color you want on the Swatches tab, switchto the RGB or HSB tab and set three numbers in the corresponding color modelto get the color you want.

4. In the Alarm Sound and Color Setting dialog box, click OK to complete the settingof alarm sounds and colors.

2.5 Setting Holiday InformationAbstract

The purpose of setting holiday information is to make it easier to acquire holiday statistics,especially the performance statistics during holidays. You can use the preset holidayinformation to query the performance data during a holiday, which makes it unnecessaryto set the query period. For example, to query the performance data in Dec. 25, you canselect the holiday “Christmas” to set the query period directly.

NetNumen U31 provides the information of some holidays by default. You can add newholidays, modify existing holidays, or delete unnecessary holidays as needed.

Steps

1. On the menu bar of the client window, click System > Customize > HolidayConfiguration, and the Holiday Configuration dialog box opens, as shown in Figure2-8.

2. To add a new holiday, click Create, and the Create Holiday dialog box opens, asshown in Figure 2-9.

In the Create Holiday dialog box, set the information of the new holiday as follows:

a. Type the holiday name in the Holiday Name text box.

b. Set the begin date and the end date of the holiday.

c. Select the year(s) in which the holiday information is valid.

3. To modify an existing holiday, click the holiday in the list in the Holiday Configurationdialog box, and then click Modify. The Modify Holiday dialog box.In theModify Holiday dialog box, modify the information of the holiday, such as begindate, end date, and valid year, and then click OK to save the modifications.

4. To delete an existing holiday, click the holiday in the list in the Holiday Configurationdialog box, and then click Delete. The Delete Holiday dialog box opens.In the Delete Holiday dialog box, select the year when the holiday is unnecessary,and then click OK.

By default, different activated application windows are displayed in the client window in anembedded way. For example, the current view displayed on the client window shown inFigure 3-1 is the Fault Management window.

Steps

To close the current Fault Management window embedded in the client window, do oneof the following actions:

l On the menu bar, click Window > Close Current Window.l On the toolbar, click directly.l On the toolbar, click the drop-down arrow on , and select Close Current Window

from the drop-down menu, as shown in Figure 3-2.

3.2 Closing All WindowsAbstract

By default, different activated application windows are displayed on the client window inan embedded way. For example, two application windows, Topology Management andFault Management, are activated and displayed on the client window, as shown in Figure3-3. You can select the application window to be displayed from the drop-down list box.

Steps

To close all activated application windows at the same time, do one of the following actions:

l On the menu bar, click Window > Close All Windows.l On the toolbar, click the drop-down arrow on , and then select Close All Windows

from the drop-down menu, as shown in Figure 3-4.

All activated application windows are closed.

Follow-Up Action

To activate an application window, select the corresponding menu or click thecorresponding shortcut button on the toolbar. For example, to open the FaultManagement window again, click Fault > Alarm Monitoring on the menu bar, or click

on the toolbar.

3.3 Showing and Hiding the ToolbarAbstract

The toolbar as shown in Figure 3-5 is displayed by default when you start the client for thefirst time. You can hide it as needed. When you start the client later, whether the toolbaris displayed depends on the status before the client was closed last time.

Steps

l To hide the toolbar, clickWindow > Tool Bar on the menu bar to cancel the selectionof Tool Bar. Next, the toolbar disappears from the client window.

l To show the toolbar, click Window > Tool Bar on the menu bar again to select theTool Bar check box. Next, the toolbar appears on the client window.

3.4 Showing and Hiding the Status BarAbstract

The status bar, shown in Figure 3-6, is displayed on the bottom of the client window bydefault when you start the client for the first time. You can hide it according to the actual

requirement. When you start the client later, whether the status bar is displayed dependson the status before the client was closed last time.

l To hide the status bar, click Window > Status Bar on the menu bar to cancel theselection of Status Bar. The status bar disappears from the client window.

l To show the status bar, clickWindow > Status Bar on the menu bar to select StatusBar. The status bar appears on the client window.

3.5 Showing and Hiding the Message AreaAbstract

Themessage area is not displayed on the client window by default when you start the clientfor the first time. You can select to show the message area or not. When you start theclient again, whether the message area is displayed depends on the state of the messagearea before the client was closed last time.

Steps

l To show the message area, do one of the following:l ClickWindow > Message Area on the menu bar to select Message Area.l Double-click the message area on the status bar, as shown in Figure 3-7.

4.1 Locking the ScreenAbstract

You can lock the screen operation when you want to leave for a short time without exitingthe client window. After the screen is locked, only you (that is, the current login user) orthe system administrator can unlock the screen.

l If the screen is unlocked by the current user, the client window appears with the sameview displayed before the screen locking operation.

l If the screen is unlocked by the administrator, the client window appears with theTopology Management window displayed by default.

Steps

1. Click on the toolbar, or click System > Lock Screen on the menu bar. The Selectlock type dialog box opens, as shown in Figure 4-1.

2. Select the lock type, Lock Screen or Lock Operation, and then click OK.

3. In the pop-up Confirm dialog box, click OK.

Result

l If Lock Screen is selected, the client window with all application views disappearsand a Unlock dialog box pops up.

To unlock the screen, type the user name and password in the dialog box and clickOK. Note that the Server Address is unmodifiable.

l If Lock Operation is selected, the client window does not disappear but no operationcan be done on it.

To unlock the client window, press <CTRL+U> to open the Unlock dialog box, typethe user name and password in the dialog box and click OK.

Note:

During the lockup of the screen, if an idle session times out or a session is cancelled, youwill be prompted to log in to the server again. In this case, you can not return to the clientwindow with the state before the screen locking operation.

4.2 Logging Out of the SystemAbstractThis section describes how to log out of the server and exit the client.

Steps1. Click on the toolbar, or click System > Logout on the menu bar.

2. In the pop-up Confirm dialog box, click OK.

ResultAfter successful logout, the Login dialog box appears.

4.3 Setting the Password of the Current Login UserAbstractThis function allows you to modify the password of the current login user.

Steps1. On the menu bar of the client window, click System > User Password Setting, and

the User Password Setting dialog box opens.

2. Type the old password of the login user in the Old Password text box. Next, type anew password in both the New Password text box and the Confirm Password textbox.

Note:l The new password must be different from the previous five passwords.l The length of a valid password must meet the user account rule, which specifies

the maximum and minimum length of passwords. You can set the user accountrule by clicking Security > Customize User Account Rule on the menu bar ofthe client window.

3. Click OK.

4.4 Viewing the System TimeAbstract

The time of the client and the server may be different. You can check the current time ofthe server on the client window.

Steps

1. On the menu bar, click System > Query System Time, and the Query System Timemessage box opens, as shown in Figure 4-2.
