NetBackup 6.5 Release
Impact Information
The NetBackup Enterprise Server product provides additional functionality,
flexibility, and robustness, for large enterprise environments. The NetBackup
Server product is a high-performance solution that offers ease of use andfunctionality that is appropriate for the smaller work environments.
This document contains pre-installation information about NetBackup that will
help customers:
Understand the contents of their media kit.
Understand the system requirements (including memory requirements) that
are needed to successfully install or upgrade NetBackup.
Understand the backward compatibility capabilities of NetBackup 6.5.
Gain access to information that is aimed at improving a customers
experience with installing, configuring, and using NetBackup.
Understanding your NetBackup media kit
The following sections describe changes in how Symantec will release theNetBackup product as well as the contents of the media kit.
Media kit changesAs NetBackup evolves with new features and added functionality, its growth
may require you to mount more CDs or DVDs depending on the type of platform
that you are installing. The following list explains current changes and direction
in how Symantec delivers NetBackup.

2 NetBackup 6.5 Release Impact Information
Understanding your NetBackup media kit
Starting with this release, Symantec is delivering NetBackup in both
CD-ROM and DVD media formats. Starting with the next major release ofNetBackup, the product will only be available on DVD media.
The following list describes NetBackup 6.0 CD-ROM changes that still apply
to NetBackup 6.5.
All compressed files are compressed using gzip. The installation of
these files requires that gunzip, as well as gzip, be installed on the
machine before NetBackup is installed. For all UNIX platforms, except
HP-UX, the binaries are expected to be in /bin or /usr/bin and thatdirectory is expected to be part of the root users PATH variable. On
HP-UX the gzip and gunzip commands are expected to be in
/usr/contrib/bin. Installation scripts will add that directory to the
PATH variable. These commands must be present to have successful
UNIX installations.
All UNIX clients are no longer present on every server CD, they are on a
separate CD. Each server package now only contains the client types
that belong to that server's hardware class. To load additional UNIXclients on a server, the user must install them from the new UNIX
Clients CD.
Starting with NetBackup 6.0, permissions were changed so that a root
user may install from UNIX NetBackup CD images mounted using NFS.
In NetBackup 6.0, the duplicate definition of a Linux client is no longer
being created. The ability for a user to define a client as NTEL/Red
Hat2.4 or Linux Red Hat2.4 was removed in NetBackup 6.0 and onlyLinux Red Hat will be used.
Note: Symantec suggests you update any existing policies that contain
clients configured as "INTEL Red Hat2.4" to "Linux Red Hat2.4".
Contents of the NetBackup media kit
Starting with this release, Symantec is delivering NetBackup in both CD-ROM
and DVD media formats. Starting with the next major release of NetBackup, the
product will only be available on DVD media.
Your NetBackup media kit includes multiple CDs or DVDs. The label on each CD
and DVD provides a brief description of its contents.
NetBackup documentation is included on both CD and DVD, and accompanies
each product order. The documentation is in Portable Document Format (PDF),
for all NetBackup software products in a release. The documentation isorganized into product groups. You can use Acrobat Reader to print the files you
select.

Understanding your NetBackup media kit
Note: NetBackup 6.5 contains two new documents that accompany the PureDiskfeature. Those documents are the Veritas NetBackup PureDisk Remote Office
Edition Getting Started Guide and the Veritas NetBackup PureDisk Remote
Office Edition Administrator's Guide. You can download a copy of these
documents from the Symantec Support Web site using the following URL.
http://www.symantec.com/enterprise/support/downloads.jsp?pid=52672
NetBackup licensing options & requirementsSeveral changes in the licensing options for Veritas NetBackup will impact your
license entitlements and will likely entitle you to additional features of
NetBackup. A version upgrade letter that announces the availability of
NetBackup 6.5 was sent to all existing customers outlining these changes.
Customers must be current on maintenance to access any of the new
entitlements mentioned below.
Changes to NetBackup licensing
Several significant changes have been made to NetBackup licensing that
consolidate and simplify the offerings. The following list provides three key
examples of these changes, but is not a comprehensive list of all licensing
changes.
NetBackup Standard ClientThe NetBackup Standard Client replaces the NetBackup Protect Server
client license. In addition, PureDisk Client, Bare Metal Restore and the
Client Encryption Option are also included in the Standard Client license.
Please note that these features are still separately installed but enabled
with a single Standard Client license key.
Bare Metal Restore (BMR) is now included in the Standard Client and is
no longer available for separate purchase. If you have purchased BMR
you will now get this feature in your Standard Client license.
Client Encryption Option is now included in the Standard Client and is
no longer available for separate purchase. If you have purchased the
Client Encryption Option you will now get this feature in your Standard
Client license. Please note this does not include nor impact the Media
Server Encryption Option.
NetBackup Enterprise Client
The NetBackup Enterprise Client consolidates several optional clientfeatures of NetBackup into a single license that includes Snapshot Client,
SAN Media Server, the new SAN Client. Please note that these features are

still separately installed but enabled with a single Enterprise Client license
key. Snapshot Client is now included in the Enterprise Client and is no
longer available as a separate purchase. If you have previously
purchased Snapshot Client (previously called Advanced Client) and are
current on maintenance, you are entitled to the Enterprise Client.
SAN Media Server is now included in the Enterprise Client and is no
longer available for separate purchase. If you have previously
purchased SAN Media Server and are current on maintenance you are
entitled to the Enterprise Client.
SAN Client is a new NetBackup 6.5 feature that is included in the
Enterprise Client.
Application and Database Pack
The Application and Database Pack consolidates several application agents
into a single license. It is possible to protect multiple instances of the same
type of application or database on the same system (such as multiple MS
SQL databases) with one Application and Database Pack. If multiple types of
applications or databases are to be protected (such as MS Exchange and MS
SQL) then multiple licenses are required. Additionally, if the same type of
database is used with multiple operating systems (such as on a virtualized
system running Oracle on Linux and Oracle Windows) then additional
licenses are required for each operating system. If you have previously
purchased any of these listed agents and are current on maintenance you
are entitled to the Application and Database Pack. Please note that the SAP
agent is not included and these features are still separately installed.

8 NetBackup 6.5 Release Impact Information
Understanding your NetBackup media kit
NetBackup license key requirements
When you install a NetBackup master or media server, you must enter a
NetBackup base product license key. Check your release package to make sure
that you have license keys for all the NetBackup servers, options, and agents
that you requested.
Enter all product license keys on the master server when you are prompted
during the installation. For detailed information on how to administer
NetBackup license keys, refer to the NetBackup Administrators Guide.
NetBackup Release UpdatesBeginning with NetBackup 6.5, Symantec will provide Release Updates instead
of maintenance packs for each of its major product releases. (This new release
model does not effect earlier versions of NetBackup.)
Maintenance packs were a very useful and will continue to be a useful method of
providing product fixes to our customers, but they can be restrictive. By
changing to our new Release Update model, Symantec is able to continue toprovide the same level of fixes as before; provide new timely features, complete
with documentation, training, and a full release test verification with each
Release Update.
When making this decision Symantec took into consideration, the content and
size of a Release Update as well as the frequency in which a new update would
occur. Symantec has decided it is in our customers best interest to provide them
with new features in a shorter range of time, rather than wait as long as two
years for the next major release for new features to become available. Byincluding new features with each Release Update, NetBackup customers will be
able to take advantage of those features much sooner, enabling them to do their
job more efficiently. Features in release updates will be smaller non-invasive
type features, that will be available to those who want them and harmless to
those who do not.
With a new release model comes a new labeling scheme. Release Updates will be
numbered according to the major NetBackup release that it corresponds with.
For example, the first release update after NetBackup 6.5 GA releases will be
labeled, NetBackup 6.5.1, the second will be 6.5.2, and so on.
How often will Release Updates become available? Our intent is to deliver our
first Release Update (6.5.1) about 3 months after a major release has officially
shipped. After that, users can expect to see the next three Release Updates to be
released every four months in succession (6.5.2 - 6.5.4). After that, Release
Updates will be released every six months.

9NetBackup 6.5 Release Impact Information
NetBackup system requirements
NetBackup system requirementsBefore you install NetBackup, Symantec recommends that you read through this
document and the NetBackup Release Notes for UNIX, Windows, and Linux.
The following subsections describe the basic system requirements needed to
download and install the product. For additional installation requirements, refer
to the NetBackup Installation Guides (Windows or UNIX). For official binary
sizes per platform, refer to the NetBackup Release Notes for UNIX, Windows, and
Linux.
Remove any other vendors backup software currently configured on your
system before installing NetBackup. The backup software of another vendor
can negatively affect how NetBackup installs and functions.
The minimum screen resolution configuration is 1024x768, 256 colors.
NetBackup 6.5 contains features that are dependent on Veritas Private
Branch Exchange (PBX). PBX helps limit the number of TCP/IP ports used by
many new features in NetBackup. Because PBX is required for all NetBackupuses, it has been added to the installation procedure as something you may
need to install if PBX does not exist on your system. For more information
about how PBX may affect your NetBackup installation, refer to the
NetBackup Installation Guidefor the platform that you are about to install.
Windows-specific system requirements:
Make certain that you have adequate disk space before starting a NetBackup
installation. The following list provides some general memory requirements fora basic Windows system.
System configuration necessary to install NetBackup on a Windows-based
server:
An Intel Pentium system running a compatible Windows platform with
a minimum of 1 Gigabyte of memory.
Requires a minimum browser level of Internet Explorer 5.0 for
NetBackup. Adequate disk space: Symantec recommends that master and media servers
in a production environment with several database agents enabled have a
minimum of 2 Gigabyte of disk space each to accommodate the NetBackup
server software and NetBackup catalogs. Any client in this sort of
environment should have a minimum of 512 MB of disk space. The following
items provide a basic itemization of the disk space requirements.
Intel server software requires approximately 512 MB.
NetBackup catalogs contain information about your backups and will
increase in size as you use the product. The amount of disk space the

catalogs require depends primarily on the number of files backed up,
the frequency of your backups, and the amount of time you chose toretain your backup data. Symantec suggests that you allow a minimum
of 512 MB.
An additional 500 MB of disk space is necessary on the drive where
Windows is installed during the upgrade process. After the upgrade is
complete, this additional space is no longer needed.
Symantec recommends that you have a minimum available space of 5%
in any Disk Storage Unit volume or file system.
UNIX-specific system requirements:
The following list provides some general memory requirements for a basic UNIX
system.
Symantec recommends that master and media servers in a production
environment with several database agents enabled have a minimum of 2GB
of memory each to accommodate the NetBackup server software and
NetBackup catalogs. Any client in this sort of environment should have aminimum of 512 MB of memory.
System configuration requirements necessary to install NetBackup on a
UNIX Server with Java are: 1 gigabyte of physical memory, and 256
megabytes of memory available to the application.
Robust File Logging enables you to set a maximum size of each of the debug
log files and also set the maximum number of log files in each NetBackup
debug log directory. This way, if the maximum size is exceeded a new debuglog file is created. And if the Maximum number of debug log files is
exceeded, the oldest log file will be deleted.
Shared memory: The default shared memory requirements are greater for
NetBackup 6.5 than for previous releases. For additional information
regarding shared memory requirements, refer to the NetBackup Installation
Guide for UNIX and Linux, and the NetBackup Troubleshooting Guide for
UNIX, Windows, and Linux.
NetBackup compatibilityThe following subsections explain how to find the latest platform compatibility
information and information describing NetBackups backwards compatibility
requirements.

NetBackup compatibility
Compatible platformsThe compatible platform information for this release of NetBackup located in
Chapter 2, Supported platforms and peripherals, in the NetBackup Release Notes
for UNIX, Windows, and Linuxand on the Symantec Support Web site. The
information on the Support Web site is updated periodically and can be viewed
by using the following procedure.
To locate platform compatibility information on the Symantec Support Web
site
1 Go to http://www.symantec.com/enterprise/support.
2 Type NetBackup Enterprise Server in the Product Lookup field.
3 Click > search icon.
4 Click on the NetBackup Enterprise Server link in the bulleted list below the
title, Support for Top Products. The NetBackup Enterprise Server Web page
appears.
5 In the list on the right side of this Web page, click on Compatibility List.
A Compatibility and Reference Web page appears that contains a list of
compatibility documents. From this Web page, you are able to refine your
search to find a link to the appropriate document. (The compatibility list
documents are in PDF format. You must have Adobe Acrobat Reader to view
these documents.)
Binary size requirementsThe approximate binary size of the NetBackup master and media server
software, and the NetBackup client software requirements for each platform
and operating system that is compatible with NetBackup can be found in
Chapter 2 of the NetBackup Release Notes for UNIX, Windows, and Linuxbook.
Backward compatibilityNetBackup is compatible with mixed versions (including mixed patch-level
versions) for many releases. This back-level compatibility enables NetBackup
servers to run a mixture of NetBackup major releases and patches in the same
environment. However, Symantec validates only certain combinations of
servers and clients, as identified in the following table.

NetBackup compatibility
For example, with this release of NetBackup a customer can have the
following in their environment and have all managed by one master server: A master server running NetBackup 6.5. (If the EMM server is a
separate server, it must also run NetBackup 6.5.)
All remaining master servers must also run NetBackup 6.5.
A media server running NetBackup 6.5.
Any other media server running either NetBackup 6.0 MP3 or greater,
5.1 GA, 5.1 MPx, or 5.0 MP4 or greater.
Note: A NetBackup 6.5 master server is not compatible with a
NetBackup 6.0, 6.0 MP1, or 6.0 MP2 media server that has tape media
configured. A change to correct this issue was made in the NetBackup
6.0 MP3 release and was carried forward to NetBackup 6.5. Therefore,
6.5 master servers are compatible with 6.0 MP3 media servers or later.
Any number of clients running NetBackup 5.xor 6.x.
Note: NetBackup 4.5 clients are not compatible with NetBackup 6.x
master and media servers because of changes in the way NetBackup
transfers data between client and media servers. A change was made in
NetBackup 5.x to allow for the more efficient transfer of large files (2
GB and larger in size) between client and media servers. This was done
to improve how large files were backed up.
Because this change will not be incorporated into NetBackup 4.5, and
since NetBackup 6.x relies on this change, NetBackup 4.5 clients are not
compatible with NetBackup 6.x servers.
For more information about upgrading NetBackup from 5.xto 6.5, go to the
Symantec Support web site, http://entsupport.symantec.com and click on the
NetBackup Enterprise Server link. The next page that appears includes a Hot
Topics section that provides a link to a NetBackup Upgrade Portal. Click on the
upgrade portal link and following the procedures described in the linkeddocuments at that Web site to ensure a successful upgrade.

13NetBackup 6.5 Release Impact Information
NetBackup compatibility
For more information about upgrading NetBackup 6.0 to 6.5, refer to the
NetBackup Installation Guidefor your operating system. The upgrade sectioncontain various mixed-version scenarios and how they must be upgraded to this
version of NetBackup. However, the general rules for a mixed-server
environment are as follows:
Before you upgrade the NetBackup server software, you must back up your
NetBackup catalogs and verify that the catalog backup was successful.
In a mixed-server environment, the master server must run the highest
version of NetBackup in use in that configuration. A master server can inter-operate with a media server that is running a level
of NetBackup that is one major release lower.
Back-level servers (those servers that are running NetBackup 5.x) cannot be
used as a Volume Database Host, global device database host, or vmd/DA
host. These capabilities are all on the EMM database host as part of the
EMM server. Always upgrade NetBackup 5.xservers performing these roles
first. Only then can media servers be upgraded and finally client machines.Again, refer to the NetBackup Installation Guides for detailed upgrade
information.
Note: Symantec recommends that you upgrade all servers to the latest level
as quickly as possible. Running a mixed-server environment that includes
NetBackup 5.x media servers may effect performance; thus, Symantec
recommends you take this into consideration when you upgrade.
A media server cannot have a numerically higher version than the master
server. (Each media server must run equal or lower levels of NetBackup.)
For media server and client backwards compatibility, refer again to Table 1-1
on page 11. This includes database clients.
Starting with NetBackup 6.5, Symantec will ship Release Updates instead of
maintenance packs. A release update will contain the same information as a
maintenance pack did with one addition. A release update will also containproduct features and/or enhancements, along with supporting
documentation.
In addition, the labeling scheme will also change. Release updates will be
numbered according to the major NetBackup release that it relates to. For
example, the first release update candidate after NetBackup 6.5 releases
will be labeled, NetBackup 6.5.1, and so on.
For pre-NetBackup 6.5 versions, applying a NetBackup maintenance pack
(MP) does not alter the version of that release. For example, NetBackup 5.1

NetBackup compatibility
GA and NetBackup 5.1 Maintenance Pack 1 (MP1) are both treated as
NetBackup 5.1 for compatibility purposes and have no co-existence issues. However, for NetBackup 6.0 and NetBackup 5.0 versions, there are the
following compatibility restraints:
A NetBackup 6.5 master server is not compatible with a NetBackup 6.0,
6.0 MP1, or 6.0 MP2 media server that has tape media configured. A
change to correct this issue was made in the NetBackup 6.0 MP3 release
and was carried forward to NetBackup 6.5. Therefore, 6.5 master
servers are compatible with 6.0 MP3 media servers or later.
NetBackup 5.0 media servers, this does not apply. In NetBackup
versions 5.0 GA, MP1, MP2, and MP3, if the media server and the client
were the same machine, you would not be able to restore on the client.
A fix was introduced for this issue in NetBackup version 5.0 MP4.
Therefore, any media server that you want to coexist in a NetBackup
6.5 configuration must be at a version level of 5.0 MP4 or greater. (For
more information about this fix, please refer to TechNote 278153, on
the Symantec Support Web site. The following is a link to this
document, http://entsupport.symantec.com/docs/278153 .)
For customers who are currently at 5.0GA and do not want to upgrade to 5.0
MP4, you can perform the following work-around on your machine.
Create the file /usr/openv/netbackup/NOSHM on a UNIX machine
or install_path\NetBackup\NOSHM on a Windows machine.
By creating this touch file, you will likely see a performance degradation for
backups and restores.
Symantec recommends that you remove this file after you have upgraded to5.0 MP4 or greater or upgraded to NetBackup 6.5.
All components (master server, media server, client, console, and agent) on
an individualsystem must be at the same version.
Backup images created under an older version of NetBackup are recoverable
with a newer version of NetBackup.
Servers are able to pull and push their version information between master
and media servers. Your servers NetBackup version determines whether the
version information can be pushed.
After startup, an upgraded media server uses the vmd service to push
its version information to all servers in its master server list. An
automatic update occurs every 24 hours when servers push their
version information again.
Servers must be at NetBackup release version 6.5 or later. If a query
times out for a particular server, it is classified as a pre-6.x version ofNetBackup.

15NetBackup 6.5 Release Impact Information
Before installing NetBackup
Before installing NetBackupWhether performing a clean installation or an upgrade of NetBackup software
(on any platform), Symantec recommends that you refer to the appropriate
installation guide for a comprehensive set of installation instructions to guide
you through the process. For a Windows installation or upgrade, refer to
NetBackup Installation Guide for Windows. For instructions on how to perform a
UNIX installation or upgrade, refer to NetBackup Installation Guide for UNIX
and Linux.
Before you install NetBackup, you should make sure that your environment isproperly configured. The following subsections describe the basic server,
system, and memory requirements that are needed to install the product
successfully. (For official binary sizes per platform, refer to the NetBackup
Release Notes for UNIX, Windows, and Linux.)
Remove any other vendors backup software currently configured on your
system before installing NetBackup. The backup software of another vendor
can negatively affect how NetBackup installs and functions. The minimum screen resolution configuration is 1024x768, with 256 colors.
NetBackup Services and Port Numbers
Symantec suggests that you use the default port settings for NetBackup
services and Internet service ports. If you modify the port numbers,
they must be the same for all NetBackup systems that communicate
with each other (that is, all master servers, media servers, and clients).
The port entries are in the following file:%SYSTEMROOT%\system32\drivers\etc\services - (Windows)
/etc/services - (UNIX)
To change the default settings, you must perform a Custom Installation
of NetBackup or manually edit this file.
For users who are upgrading from 5.x directly to NetBackup 6.5
NetBackup 6.5 contains features that are dependent on Symantec
Private Branch Exchange (PBX). PBX helps limit the number of TCP/IPports used by many new features in NetBackup. Because PBX is
required for all NetBackup uses, it has been added to the installation
procedure as something you may need to install if PBX does not exist on
your system. For more information about how PBX may affect your
NetBackup installation, refer to the NetBackup Installation Guidefor
the platform that you are about to install.
After you install the NetBackup server software as a part of an upgrade
installation, you must run the commandnbpushdata. This commandmoves data from your current database files (a subset of the NetBackup

Installation Guidefor additional information that pertains to how toupgrade NetBackup.
Installation requirementsThe following subsections describe some of the known NetBackup requirements
that must be satisfied before you attempt to install the product on your server.
Installation and upgrade requirements NetBackup 6.5 allows upgrades from previous versions to NetBackup 6.5.
NetBackup 6.5 does not allow an upgrade from a previous NetBackup 6.5
beta version to a NetBackup GA version.
Mixed master and media server configurations may be compatible; see
Backward compatibility on page 11 for detailed information.
For a complete list of compatible platforms, refer to Chapter 2, Supportedplatforms and peripherals, in the NetBackup Release Notes for UNIX,
Windows, and Linux.
Windows-specific installation requirements
The following list describe contains basic requirements necessary for a
successful installation of NetBackup. The NetBackup Installation Guide for
Windows provides a thorough list of requirements that are platform- or
feature-specific.
An administrator account and password for the server.
Peripherals, such as robotic devices and stand-alone tape drives, installed
according to the manufacturers instructions and recognized by the
Windows software.
The network is configured so the computers recognize and communicate
with one another. Generally, if you can reach the clients from the server byusing the ping command, the setup will work with NetBackup.
Client Software
Installing NetBackup server software also installs client software on
the server system. However, installing NetBackup on client systems is
done separately. Refer to Installing NetBackup Client Software.

If you install NetBackup Remote Administration Consoles, the master
server must have the system names of the NetBackup AdministrationConsoles in its server list to allow them access.
UNIX-specific installation requirements
The following list describes contains basic requirements necessary for a
successful installation of NetBackup. The NetBackup Installation Guide for UNIX
and Linuxprovides a thorough list of requirements that are platform- or
feature-specific.
Make certain that you have a server of a compatible hardware type running
a compatible version of its operating system (with applicable patches),
adequate disk space, and compatible peripherals. For details on these
requirements, refer to the NetBackup Release Notes for UNIX, Windows, and
Linux.
Please refer to the NetBackup Release Notes for UNIX, Windows, and Linux
for information on known product dependencies such as operating system
patches. It is important that users have the latest patches installed on their
systems before installing NetBackup.
When uninstalling NetBackup, PBX will not be uninstalled. If you would like
to permanently clean your system, refer to the PBX documentation stored
on your platform-specific ICS CD-ROM.
Windows system requirements
Make certain that you have adequate disk space before starting a NetBackup
installation. The following list provides some general memory requirements for
a basic Windows system. The following list has been updated with more current
information than that supplied in the NetBackup 6.0 Release Notes for UNIX and
Windows document.
System configuration necessary to install NetBackup on a Windows-based
server:
An Intel Pentium system running Windows 2000 (service pack 4) with a
minimum of 1 Gigabyte of memory, or Windows 2003 server (service
pack)1.
Requires a minimum browser level of Internet Explorer 5.0 for
NetBackup.
Adequate disk space: Symantec recommends that master and media servers
in a production environment with several database agents enabled have a
minimum of 2GB of disk space each to accommodate the NetBackup serversoftware and NetBackup catalogs. Any client in this sort of environment

should have a minimum of 512 MB of disk space. The following items
provide a basic itemization of the disk space requirements. Intel server software requires approximately 512 MB.
NetBackup catalogs contain information about your backups and will
increase in size as you use the product. The amount of disk space the
catalogs require depends primarily on the number of files backed up,
the frequency of your backups, and the amount of time you chose to
retain your backup data.
UNIX system requirements
Make certain that you have adequate disk space before starting a NetBackup
installation. The following list provides some general memory requirements for
a basic UNIX system. For product-specific memory and binary size
requirements, refer to the NetBackup Release Notes for UNIX, Windows, and
Linux.
Symantec recommends that master and media servers in a production
environment with several database agents enabled have a minimum of 2GB
of memory each to accommodate the NetBackup server software andNetBackup catalogs. Any client in this sort of environment should have a
minimum of 512 MB of memory.
System configuration requirements necessary to install NetBackup on a
UNIX Server with Java are: 1 gigabyte of physical memory, and 256
megabytes of memory available to the application.
Robust File Logging enables you to set a maximum size of each of the debug
log files and also set the maximum number of log files in each NetBackupdebug log directory. This way, if the maximum size is exceeded a new debug
log file is created. And if the maximum number of debug log files is
exceeded, the oldest log file will be deleted.

NetBackup LiveUpdate
NetBackup 6.5 contains a new LiveUpdate feature that enables you to downloadand install patches for NetBackup, NetBackup add-on products, and PBX.
If you want to take advantage of the new NetBackup LiveUpdate feature on
Windows systems, you need to first designate a server that will contain the
NetBackup release updates (previously referred to as maintenance packs).
During the NetBackup installation on Windows, if you want to configure the
NetBackup LiveUpdate agent, you will need to specify the location of the
NetBackup LiveUpdate server. For more information on how to configure your
NetBackup LiveUpdate server, refer to the Setting up your NetBackup
LiveUpdate server section in the NetBackup Installation Guide for Windows.
Note: There is no additional software that you need to install to configure your
NetBackup LiveUpdate server.
Installation and upgrade Installing or upgrading PBX
NetBackup versions 6.0 and later require Private Branch Exchange (PBX) to
operate. NetBackup versions earlier than 6.0 did not require PBX. However,
you may have other Veritas or Symantec products installed in your current
NetBackup 5.x environment that require this software.
Windows systems
Regardless of whether PBX already exists in your current NetBackup
5.x environment, the upgrade to NetBackup 6.5 installs or upgrades
PBX automatically.
UNIX systems
If PBX is not installed in your current NetBackup 5.x environment, the
upgrade to NetBackup 6.5 automatically prompts you to install PBX
during the upgrade.
If PBX already exists in your current NetBackup 5.x environment, youmay need to upgrade it before you upgrade to NetBackup 6.5.
Check the installed PBX version by entering the following:
cat /opt/VRTSpbx/build_version
Take the appropriate action as follows:
For versions 1.2.x, upgrade PBX when prompted by the upgrade
script during the NetBackup 6.5 upgrade.
For versions 1.3 - 1.3.24.x, you must first upgrade PBX from theNetBackup 6.5 ICS CD or DVD before you upgrade to NetBackup
6.5.

For versions 1.3.25.x or later, no PBX upgrade is required.
During installation, the NetBackup Infrastructure Core Services (ICS)installer will create the /opt directory if it does not already exist. However, if
the ICS installer has to create the directory, it may create it with improper
permissions set, enabling only a root user to have access to the directory. If
this occurs, you must manually change the permissions on that directory.
Changes were added to NetBackup access control (NBAC) in this release. To
ensure that you have the latest upgrades installed, you should upgrade
Symantec Product Authentication and Authorization with the latest ICS,
and have Symantec Product Authorization running while you perform this
upgrade.
