    SCOPE

    1. Defence Standard 02512 Part 5 contains details for the selection of Radio Frequency (RF)electrical cables for services in HM Surface Ships and Submarines. It also provides reference datafor the glands, deck tubes and cable terminations associated with the particular cables.

    3. Any user of this DEF STAN either within MOD or in industry may propose an amendment to it.Proposals for amendments that are not directly applicable to a particular contract are to be madeto the publishing authority identified on Page (1), and those directly applicable to a particularcontract are to be dealt with using contract procedures.

    4. If it is found to be unsuitable for any particular requirement, MOD is to be informed in writingof the circumstances.

    5. No alteration is to be made to this DEF STAN except by the issue of an authorized amendment.

    6. Unless otherwise stated, reference in this DEF STAN to approval, approved, authorized andsimilar terms means by the MOD in writing.

    7. Any significant amendments that may be made to this DEF STAN at a later date will be indicatedby a vertical sideline. Deletions will be indicated by 000 appearing at the end of the line interval.

    8. This DEF STAN has been reissued to reflect changes in departmental nomenclature and thechanges to technical requirements.

    Conditions of Release

    General

    9. This DEF STAN has been devised solely for the use of the MOD, and its contractors in theexecution of contracts for the MOD. To the extent permitted by law, the MOD hereby excludesall liability whatsoever and howsoever arising (including but without limitation, liability resultingfrom negligence) for any loss or damage however caused when the DEF STAN is used for anyother purpose.

    10. This document is Crown Copyright and the information herein may be subject to Crown or thirdparty rights. It is not to be released, reproduced or published without written permission of theMOD.

    11. The Crown reserves the right to amend or modify the contents of this DEF STAN withoutconsulting or informing any holder.

    MOD Tender or Contract Process

    12. This DEF STAN is the property of the Crown. Unless otherwise authorized in writing by the MODit must be returned on completion of the contract, or submission of the tender, in connection withwhich it is issued.

    13. When this DEF STAN is used in connection with a MOD tender or contract, the user is to ensurethat he is in possession of the appropriate version of each document, including related documents,relevant to each particular tender or contract. Enquiries in this connection may be made to theauthority named in the tender or contract.

    14. When DEF STAN are incorporated into MOD contracts, users are responsible for their correctapplication and for complying with contractual and any other statutory requirements. Compliancewith an DEF STAN does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations.

    Categories of DEF STAN

    15. The Category of this DEF STAN has been determined using the following criteria:

    a. Category 1. If not applied may have a Critical affect on the following:

    Safety of the vessel, its complement or third parties.

    Operational performance of the vessel, its systems or equipment.

    b. Category 2. If not applied may have a Significant affect on the following:

    Safety of the vessel, its complement or third parties.

    Operational performance of the vessel, its systems or equipment.

    Through life costs and support.

    c. Category 3. If not applied may have a Minor affect on the following:

    MOD best practice and fleet commonality.

    Corporate Experience and Knowledge.

    Current support practice.

    3.1 General

    a. In accordance with MOD policy to reduce the dangers to personnel and damage toequipment from smoke, toxic fumes and corrosive gases when electrical wires andcables are subjected to fire, an extended range of Limited Fire Hazard (LFH) wires,cables and ancillary components is now available.     4.1 Data for Radio Frequency Electrical Cables and Associated Glands andTerminations

    4.1.1 Cable Construction

    a. The LFH sheathed cables shown in this DEF STAN comply with DEF STAN 61-12Part 9.

    b. Most Radio Frequency (RF) cables shown in DEF STAN 517 Part 3 have beenincluded.

    c. DEF STAN 512 Part 12 denotes the other cables of DEF STAN 512 Part 5 whichcomply with commercial and other MOD specifications.

    4.1.2 Arrangement of Tables

    a. Data tables of glands, terminations, electrical characteristics and dimensions etc,of each cable have been arranged with one cable only on each page.

    b. To facilitate reference to data, uniformity of presentation has been preservedthroughout. Columns read in the same general order from left to right.

    c. Cables having the same dielectric have been arranged together in ascending orderof rated impedance.

    4.1.3 Service of Cables

    a. The service use of these cables will, generally, be the determining factor for theselection of the cable to be used and they are not, therefore, included in the lists ofequivalent cables in DEF STAN 512 Part 13.

    b. When a cable has been introduced as a replacement for a specific imperial cable,or where a sheathed LFH cable has a comparable electrical performance to a PVCSheathed cable, this has been indicated on the data page.

    c. The Table Headings have been annotated to include the NATO Stock Number.

    d. The Descriptive Code shown in the Tables for RF LFH cables is fully defined inTable C of DEF STAN 61-12 Part 9.

    e. All cables are NON-FLEXIBLE unless shown otherwise.

    4.1.4 Dimensions and Weight

    a. Dimensions and weight values are nominal unless otherwise stated, e.g. the overalldiameter (OD) of cable is given as maximum.

    b. Diameter under screens of collectively screened cables are maxima deduced fromthe maximum OD of the cable.

    4.1.5 Resistance

    a. Resistance values given are maxima per conductor at 20C.

    4.1.6 Voltage Rating

    a. Voltage rating, where given, is nominal root mean square (rms) value.

    4.1.7 Core Identity and Layering

    a. In multicore cables demarcation between one layer and the next is indicated by acolon (:) and entries are shown with cable centre to outer layer read from left toright. Cores are shown in the order in which they are laid up.

    4.1.8 Glands, Grommets and Deck Tubes

    a. The types and sizes of metric and imperial cable glands have been tabulated foreach cable. The sizes given are the smallest in which a cable of maximum overalldiameter can be accommodated.

    b. Data for multiple type glands and pressure type glands is not included in the tables.

    c. For further details of glands, grommets and deck tubes refer to DEF STAN 02512Part 11.

    4.1.9 Terminations and Connectors

    a. The appropriate sizes of all Metric terminations to suit the conductor sizes of thecables have been included, where applicable.

    b. When the outer conductor of a co-axial cable or the screen of a collectively screenedcable is required to be permanently connected electrically to the enclosure it is tobe terminated and secured by means of an equipment ferrule and clip (DEF STAN02512 Part 10). Only in those instances where it is necessary to meet EMCrequirements is the equipment gland (DEF STAN 02512 Part 10) to be used.

    c. For further details of terminations and connectors refer to DEF STAN 02512 Part10.

    4.1.10 Abbreviations

    a. Definitions of the abbreviations used in the data tables are given in Annex A.
