    SCOPE

    1. This Defence Standard 02–512 Part 12 contains details of the NATO Stock Numbers (NSN) andassociated cable specifications of all cables mentioned in DEF STAN 02–512. Reference is madeto the relevant Parts and Tables in DEF STAN 02–512 where detailed information of the cables,glands, deck tubes and terminations associated with the particular cable can be found.

    Sponsorship

    1. This Defence Standard (DEF STAN) is sponsored by the Defence Logistics Organisation (DLO),Ministry of Defence (MOD).

    2. It is to be applied as required by any MOD contract for the selection of radio frequency electrical

    cables and is applicable to HM Surface Ships and Submarines.3. The complete DEF STAN 02–512 comprises:

    4. Any user of this DEF STAN either within MOD or in industry may propose an amendment to it.Proposals for amendments that are not directly applicable to a particular contract are to be madeto the publishing authority identified on Page (1), and those directly applicable to a particularcontract are to be dealt with using contract procedures.

    5. If it is found to be unsuitable for any particular requirement, MOD is to be informed in writingof the circumstances.

    6. No alteration is to be made to this DEF STAN except by the issue of an authorized amendment.

    7. Unless otherwise stated, reference in this DEF STAN to approval, approved, authorized andsimilar terms means by the MOD in writing.

    8. Any significant amendments that may be made to this DEF STAN at a later date will be indicatedby a vertical sideline. Deletions will be indicated by 000 appearing at the end of the line interval.

    9. Extracts from British Standards within the DEF STAN have been included with the permissionof the British Standards Institution.

    10. This DEF STAN has been reissued to reflect changes in departmental nomenclature and thechanges to technical requirements.

    Conditions of Release

    General

    11. This DEF STAN has been devised solely for the use of the MOD, and its contractors in theexecution of contracts for the MOD. To the extent permitted by law, the MOD hereby excludesall liability whatsoever and howsoever arising (including but without limitation, liability resultingfrom negligence) for any loss or damage however caused when the DEF STAN is used for anyother purpose.

    MOD Tender or Contract Process

    14. This DEF STAN is the property of the Crown. Unless otherwise authorized in writing by the MODit must be returned on completion of the contract, or submission of the tender, in connection withwhich it is issued.

    15. When this DEF STAN is used in connection with a MOD tender or contract, the user is to ensurethat he is in possession of the appropriate version of each document, including related documents,relevant to each particular tender or contract. Enquiries in this connection may be made to theauthority named in the tender or contract.

    16. When DEF STAN are incorporated into MOD contracts, users are responsible for their correctapplication and for complying with contractual and any other statutory requirements. Compliancewith an DEF STAN does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations.

    3. MILITARY STANDARDS/REQUIREMENTS

    3.1 Identification of NATO Stock Numbers and Specifications for Cables

    3.1.1 General

    In accordance with MOD policy to reduce the dangers to personnel and damage toequipment from smoke, toxic fumes and corrosive gases when electrical wires andcables are subjected to fire, an extended range of Limited Fire Hazard (LFH) wires,cables and ancillary components is now available. The new range of LFHcomponents is to be used in all new construction MOD vessels and is also to beincorporated retrospectively in existing vessels when opportunities arise.

    4.1.3 Definition of Codes

    a . Letters, A-Z, have been allocated to the Cable Manufacturing Specifications listedin Annex A. These codes are used in the Tables under ‘Specific Code’ to denote therelevant specification or standard and are for the purposes of this Part of DEFSTAN 02–512 only.
