THANK YOUAs you will read in the pages of this report, fiscal year 2013 (July 1, 2012

– June 30, 2013) was a busy one for New England Public Radio. In addition to officially breaking ground at our new facility in downtown Springfield, launching 89.5FM in Great Barrington, and re-imagining the NEPR News Network with exciting new programming… hundreds of news stories were covered by our reporters including the 2012 election season and the Boston Marathon Bombings; over 2,000 hours of locally produced classical, jazz and word music were broadcast through home stereos, car speakers, computers and smartphones (thanks to our brand new app); and partnerships with community organizations like Soldier On provided listeners the opportunity to make their contribution to NEPR go a step farther.

Because of your support, and the support of thousands of other listeners like you, New England Public Radio is thriving. We hear from you time and again that we are your source for news, that classical music provides you a much needed escape, jazz sets the mood for your evenings, and that innovative new programs like AudioFiles are helping you to explore our community beyond the radio dial. We look forward to continuing to innovate and to grow in the next year, and welcome you to stay tuned as we take one of the biggest steps in our 50+ year history this summer - moving in to 1525 Main Street in Springfield and the start of rehabilitation of our Five Colleges Studios at UMass Amherst!

On behalf of the NEPR Foundation Board, and our staff, thank you for your generous support.

Martin MillerCEO & General Manager

“Because of your support, and the support of thousands of other listeners like you, New England Public Radio is thriving.”

NEWS

Page 7: NEPR Annual Report 2013

SAM HUDZIK JOINS THE NEWS TEAMIn July, NEPR welcomed News Director Sam Hudzik to the station. Sam is a former political reporter for Chicago’s public radio station, WBEZ. Sam has jumped in feet first, and is already working to create more opportunities in the news magazines for local content and making frequent use of partnerships with

other New England public radio stations, including WBUR in Boston and WSHU in Connecticut. This means more stories from around the region on our air, and our stories airing around the region.

FAREWELL TO JOHN MONTANARIAfter 35 years on the air, Music Director and classical host, John Montanari hung up his headphones for the last time on December 20th, 2013. John came to WFCR fresh out of college in 1978, and has been sharing his love of music with listeners ever since. Those of us who worked alongside him for many years

are finding it strange to walk by Master Control in the morning, and not see John in there. “I’ll no doubt still be involved in music presentation locally,” says John. “But look forward to more time to travel, reading, writing, cooking and other pursuits.”

Filling John’s shoes is a difficult task, and one that we take very seriously. Over the next several months, you will hear a variety of voices during morning classical music, some familiar, like Jon Solins, and some new, like Cheryl Willoughby, former music director at Classical New England (a service of WGBH Radio) in Boston and former director of programming at VPR Classical (a service of Vermont Public Radio), who we’ve tapped to help fill in as we continue our search for a new music host.

In FY’13, we improved several aspects of NEPR.net including:

• A sound quality and ease-of-use streaming upgrade

• On Demand listening options for Jazz a la Mode, Jazz Safari and Tertulia

• Growing “AudioFiles” by partnering with organizations like the Springfield Public Forum and the Center for Public Policy and Administration.

NEW SIGNALS IN BERKSHIRE COUNTYThe NEPR News Network is now heard loud and clear in Berkshire County!

98.9 FM WNNI, covering the northern part of Berkshire County, will join the network in 2014.

The NEPR News Network can also be heard at AM 640 across western New England, and 91.7FM in Franklin County, as well as online at NEPR.net.

UPGRADES

With his trademark wit and spontaneity, host Jian Ghomeshi covers pop culture and high arts alike with forays into the most provocative and compelling cultural trends.

VALLEY GIVES

On 12.12.12, NEPR participated in Valley Gives Day, a one-of-a-kind celebration of generosity for western Massachusetts, where in one

24-hour period, thousands of people from Franklin, Hampshire and Hampden counties made gifts to their favorite charities. Our supporters came out in droves to help the station raise funds for a new generator at our transmitter site on Mount Lincoln.

We’re pretty sure that a totally unplanned power outage that knocked us off the air the weekend before

helped to encourage giving! 279 listeners donated $23,226, putting NEPR in the #3 spot for most donors, and qualifying us for a $5,000 grant. We also won a $1,000 “golden ticket” putting the grand total at $29,226 in 24 hours!

BUILDING SUPPORT: A SOLDIER ON PARTNERSHIPIn what has become an annual tradition, NEPR was pleased to work with a community organization in a special fundraising partnership during our winter drive. This year, we partnered with the veterans service organization, Soldier On and Berkshire Bank on a special campaign called Building Support: Sustain our Station, Support Our Soldiers, which

helped Soldier On with its plans to build a new transitional housing facility for female veterans in Leeds, MA. For every pledge made in support of NEPR, Berkshire Bank contributed a 2x4 to help construct sixteen

housing units for women veterans and their children. Over $246,600 was contributed to support NEPR and 2,126 2x4s were donated to the Soldier On project. The building is currently under construction.

BILL COSBY LIVE FOR NEPRSurely the biggest profile event for the station in 2013 (and let’s be honest, in its history!) was longtime listener Bill Cosby’s performance at Springfield’s Symphony Hall in March. Resplendent in his custom NEPR sweatshirt, Dr. Cosby had the audience rolling for his entire set, with jokes about his family, show

business, and getting a little older. The evening raised over $146,000 in support of the capital campaign, and put NEPR on the map in Springfield, just a few doors down from our new home.

WE HOPE WE SAW YOU AT SOME OF OUR OTHER EVENTS IN FY’13 TOO!

• A pub night at McCaffrey’s in downtown Springfield before the Springfield Public Forum’s event with Will Shortz

• Four films in the Jazz a la Mode Film Series at Amherst Cinema

• A new partnership with The Berkshire Bach Society brought “Bach at New Year’s” to Northampton

• A special event with the Affiliated Chambers of Greater Springfield welcomed UMass Chancellor Kumble Subbaswamy to Springfield

• A Groundbreaking Ceremony at 1525 Main Street (the future home of NEPR) featured special guests like Congressman Richard Neal, Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno and others

• The NEPR Foundation’s 5th annual Arts & Humanities Awards Gala honored June Millington, musician and Co-Founder of the Institute for the Musical Arts in Goshen, MA; Michael Mucci, Chairman and Director of Instrumental Music for the Longmeadow High School Music Department; Enchanted Circle Theater of Holyoke MA; and The Pioneer Valley Symphony & Chorus of Greenfield, MA.

CAPITAL CAMPAIGN

It’s been another busy year on the Campaign trail for New England Public Radio, with over $5

million now pledged in support of our comprehensive 50th Anniversary Campaign. NEPR has received an additional $1,767,580 for the project from the Massachusetts Housing Investment Corporation (MHIC) in New Market Tax Credits.

Construction is now underway at our new headquarters in downtown Springfield and the next year will be a sprint toward the finish line as we work hard to raise the final $1.4 million needed to fund and equip our new facilities. To date over 300 gifts and pledges have been made in support of the Campaign. Solicitation efforts are still actively underway in Hampden, Hampshire, and Franklin Counties, as well as Connecticut.

Amherst, MA. The plan shows the street level area (right) and the basement level (left).

Leadership gifts for the Campaign have come in this year from the Dennis Group in Springfield, the Massachusetts Cultural Facilities Fund, PeoplesBank, The Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts, the Beveridge Family Foundation and the United Bank Foundation.

In the year ahead, NEPR will continue calling on banks throughout our listening area for Campaign support. We will also continue calling on some of the many long-time donors who have not yet had a chance to hear about our new facilities in Springfield and our bold plans for expanded local programming.
