Who we are? - Background InformationThere are serious disadvantages associated with the throwing of waste at open and public places like river banks, road side, and temples; in front of educational and commercial institutions and at private premises. It causes hostile effects to the environment as well as the human health. Rapidly growing and unplanned urbanization, unprecedented population growth, rising life style and inadequate awareness among the citizens to manage waste on their own has topped as serious issue in major urban centers of the country such as Kathmandu, Biratnagar, Dharan, Birjunj and Nepalgunj. It has resulted in severe cases of environmental degradation such as pollution, depletion of natural and cultural heritages.
Realizing this concurrent fact, Nepal Pollution Control and Environment Management Centre (NEPCEMAC) was established in 1997 by a group of enthusiastic young people dedicated to bring affirmative changes in the environment of these major cities through coordination with government, NGOs, INGOs and stakeholders.
Affiliated with the Social Welfare Council, registered in District Administration Office Lalitpur district and at Central Regional Health Directorate HetaudaMakwanpur district, NEPCEMAC is a non-profit and independent non-governmental organization that has been working in the field of Solid Waste Management (SWM) with local communities since its inception. Also, it has initiated activities to work in the areas of health and education since 2007. It has been providing health services throughthe NEPCEMAC Community Health Centre in a very economical way to the poor people of the working community as well to the solid waste collectors of NEPCEMAC and their families.

What we do? - Our ActivitiesDoor to door collection and transfer of waste
We conduct daily collection of solid waste through door to door services. Such services have been expanded to about 19,000 households in Kathmandu valley that includes 75,000 families thus reaching to 300,000 people.
Waste Segregation
We promote the waste segregation program at the source of production level (households kitchen). From the past two years, 3,000 families of Ichangu Narayan and Sitapaila VDCs of Kathmandu district are segregating the household waste into two parts (degradable and non-degradable). For this purpose, two separate buckets, green for degradable and red for non-biodegradable waste, has been provided to each family. This program is supported by the Japanese Embassy in Nepal. Likewise 500 families of Ward No.3 and 4 of Kathmandu Metropolitan City are also undertaking the same activity.
Public Awareness Programs
We organize and provide advocacy on solid waste management issues through orientations, trainings, mass campaigns, exhibitions, performing street dramas, songs, poetry, shows video documentary and use of pamphlets has proved to be effective in sensitizing local people and inducing their active participation in reducing the environmental pollution works. Annually hundreds of such programs are organized.
Street Sweeping and river Cleaning Campaign
We organize street cleaning campaign (street sweeping) in all the areas where door to door waste collection services are delivered. Similarly, cleaning of river banks is also done.
Community Mobilization
The community is mobilized in various activities targetingthe improvement of the environmental pollution at the local place. Bush removing
Weconduct removal of unwanted bushes during summer season that grows on roadside area.
Dead Dog Management
We manage the dead bodies of street dogs that meet with death due to road accidents.Publication
We publish "NEPCEMAC SANDESH" every year for informing stakeholders, community, as well as minded organizations and service holders regarding environmental issues and waste management. Similarly other publication includes Solid Waste Management Training Manual, several pamphlets and bulletins and articles in different national newspapers.Training

Composting
NEPCEMAC promote composting of solid waste by installing composting plants in following sites: Central Zoo, Lalitpur Handigaon, Kathmandu Banasthali, Kathmandu Chobhar, LalitpurThe compost manure produced out of the composting plants is sold to farmers and households. It is one source of income for our organization. As a reward, every house that segregates the solid waste from kitchen is provided ten kilogram of compost manure on free basis annually.
Marketing of compost binsWe promote the vermin composting wooden box which is very appropriate for vermin keeping. So far, 515 plastic composting bins have been provided to the community people for household composting.
Greenery Development
NEPCEMAC promotes greenery in working communities in order to contribute to the aesthetic value of Kathmandu valley through plantation and afforestation program. Examples: Ring road belt of Kusunti Ekantakuna area, Banasthali Balaju area, Maharajgunj Chapal Karkhana area, Bagmati river bank of Sanepa Aphaldol area, Bishnumati River bank of Chamati area and Dhobikhola river bank of Hadigoun area.
