This month……… Which do you prefer iPhone or Samsung? iPhone- Although the iPhone 6S is the most expensive phone on the
market right now it has very cool features that will amaze you. Apple
has made some big debuts lately with the iPhone 6, iPhone 6S, and
iPhone 6 Plus. These phones have many cool new features to offer.
Like all “generations” of the iPhone you can FaceTime friends and
family. FaceTime is a built in feature that costs no money and allows
you to talk to friends and others via video chat. This phone also has
3D touch that makes it easier to get to apps quicker. The front facing
camera also has a flash which is a good feature. The camera also has
gone from an 8 megapixel camera to a 12 megapixel camera. Plus,
the iPhone 6S has a strong, durable glass screen. This helps keep the
phone from cracking too easily, and it can make it last longer. This
phone also is 90 percent faster than any previous Apple phone before.
Also, you can monitor your battery usage and put your phone on
‘Low Battery Mode” when it its losing battery. Finally, the Apple has
a new way to pay for things online, it is called Apple Pay. And
finally, Apple Pay allows you to make secure mobile transactions
right on your phone.
Samsung- The Samsung S6 edge is a great phone. First, this phone
has a superior battery life. These phones can last about 7 hours, as
compared to the iPhone 6’s four hour battery life. With power saver
on, the S6 Edge can last for two days at a stretch, and that’s
impressive. Not to mention these phones charge incredibly fast. This
is helpful when you need your phone to charge, but you don’t have a
portable charger and need to go. Plus, this phone has the best camera;
16-megapixels. The iPhone, on the other hand, only has a 12
megapixel camera. The S6 also has the ability to take a picture while
the camera is open by tapping anywhere on the screen, a cool and
useful feature. Also, this phone has a great screen. Many say the
Samsung’s S6 Edge is stunningly sharp at 577ppi (pixels per inch)
more than the iPhone 6s. And, the Samsung S6 Edge has 32 GB of
internal storage, as compared to the 16GB of internal storage the
iPhone has.
IPhone
“IPhones are a lot better and they are also smaller which makes
them easier to fit in a pocket”
“It is more original, the Samsung almost follows everything the
IPhone does. “
Samsung “The features and the ability to customize the phone is much more
advanced on the Samsung than on the iPhone.”
“This phone works well and is reliable. Apple products are definitely
less hackable than a lot of other companies like Samsung.”

Saint Patrick’s Day, is a global holiday around the
world. It is celebrated on March 17, every year. Saint
Patrick’s Day started as a religious feast for the
patron saint of Ireland. At the age of sixteen, he was
kidnapped and taken to Ireland. He eventually
escaped and converted many to people to become
Christian. By the time he died, March 17, 461, he
established monasteries, churches and schools. He
was honored by the people of Ireland for all his work
and together they came to celebrate with religious
services and feasts. Throughout the years, Saint
Patrick’s Day has become a largely secular holiday
to celebrate Saint Patrick and the Irish culture. As a
way to celebrate, many cities hold parades and
festivals. The people dance, wear green, as well as
eat Irish food, to celebrate Saint Patrick and all of his
work.

March Madness History By: Connor M. & Jake G.
March Madness first started as a high school
basketball tournament that only had 8 teams. This
happened in March of 1908. The tournament was
won by Peoria High School after they defeated Rock
Island High School. The score was 48-29. By 1920,
there were 16 teams in the tournament. The games
were played at Huff Gymnasium at the University of
Illinois. It was held here until 1962. On March 17,
1939 the NCAA tournament with 8 teams were
going for the championship. The Oregon Webfoots
and The Ohio State Buckeyes played in the
championship and the Webfoots won. The nickname
March Madness was not used for the NCAA
tournament until March 13, 1958. Last year the
Duke Blue Devils beat out the Wisconsin Badgers
by a score of 68-63.

Poultry Day By: Taylor P.
Poultry day is a holiday made to celebrate the birds that
we eat and get our eggs from. It is celebrated every year
on March 19. What a lot of people don’t know is that
poultry not only includes chickens, it includes a wide
variety of birds that people can raise and farm. Any bird
that you can raise for meat or eggs is categorized as
poultry. Some examples of poultry are, chickens, geese,
ducks, rheas, emus, ostriches, pigeons, guinea fowl,
pheasants, quail, turkey, and peafowl are some examples.
Pet birds are not considered poultry.
Raising poultry is about as difficult as keeping a cat or
dog. To care for smaller poultry, such as chickens,
waterfowl, guineafowl, pheasants, or peafowl, you need
a shelter, preferably raised off the ground to provide
warmth and shade, and filled with bedding like straw.
Waterfowl obviously need water, but that can be
provided with something as small as a plastic baby pool.
Each particular species of bird eats their own specific
diet, and you should research the type of bird you are
getting to make sure you are feeding them the proper diet.
Straw and most foods for poultry can be bought at farm
stores. Larger birds, such as ostriches, rheas, and emus,
the ratite family, need lots of shrubs to feed off of and
hide in and also a large enough shelter that provides some
warmth in the winter and shade in the summer. Most
poultry will help keep the grass in your lawn short, and
will also eat the bugs, ticks, spiders, and snails in your
yard, basically devouring anything they can fit in their
mouths.
A benefit to raising poultry is that you can make some
money. Many people raise poultry for the eggs and the
meat, but others raise them for the feathers, or so that they
can breed them and sell the fertile hatching eggs. Pigeons
are a different story, people breed them for racing, like
dogs or horses, and sell them so that other people can
make money off of them when they win races. Overall,
owning poultry is a great experience and takes a lot of
responsibility and hard work. You should only consider
owning poultry or any other animals if you have done the
proper amount of research beforehand.

Easter By: Katie H
Sunday March 27, 2016 is Easter Sunday. Easter
is a day to celebrate Jesus’ resurrection from the
dead. Some people call Easter a moveable feast, this
is because it doesn’t fall on a certain date every year.
Easter is usually observed March 22 - April 25,
every year. The exact origins of Easter are unknown,
but some say that Easter is derived from Eostre.
Eostre was a Teutonic goddess of spring and
fertility.
Easter has a religious side and a commercial side.
The commercial side, well that’s the marshmallows,
chocolate, and jelly beans that you get in a basket
from the “Easter bunny” every year. The “Easter
bunny” was supposedly introduced by German
immigrants, who brought over stories of an egg-
laying hare. The bible makes no mention at all of a
bunny that brings candy. The “Easter bunny’s”
premier in America actually came from Germany,
could you imagine that.
Just think next time you go egg hunting in
someone's backyard, or find that a magical bunny
broke into your house and gave you candy, that it
was the Germans who brought along the egg-laying
rabbit.
The Oscars By: Jessica S.
The 88th Academy Awards was aired on February 28th,
2016. This year, the host had been Chris Rock, who had
also previously hosted the Oscars in 2005. Chris Rock
brought the topic of diversity to the Oscars this year.
There had been a lot of controversy because there had
been a lack of black nominees. He had also been
sponsoring Girl Scout Cookies. The award for best
picture had been given to “The Spotlight,” Brie Larson
for best actress, and Leonardo DiCaprio finally got his
Oscar for best actor after 6 previous nominations in
different categories. Lady GaGa had an outstanding
performance with her song “Til It Happens to You.” This
performance was probably the most emotional of the
night. David Grohl gave a performance of The Beatles’
song “Blackbird” in tribute to many people including
Wes Craven, Robert Loggia, Maureen O'Hara, Omar
Sharif, Alan Rickman, David Bowie and Leonard Nimoy.
The 88th Academy Awards had definitely been a night
remember.

Legends of Leprechauns By: Anna M.
Leprechauns (or little people) are Irish fairies. They are about 2 feet tall and a fully dressed in green and usually has an orange bread, they are known to be shoemakers as well. People say that Leprechauns can be found by following the sound of their hammering. People say, that if you catch a Leprechaun, they have to lead you to their hidden pot of gold. But watch out, if you take your eyes off of them, then they will likely run away. Leprechauns try to trick you to look in another direction so that the leprechaun has a chance to escape and keep its pot of gold hidden from you. Leprechauns are rarely seen in groups, you barely see two leprechauns together. Leprechauns even have their own day named after them, Leprechaun Day. Leprechauns Day is dedicated to the little elves of Ireland, Leprechauns. On Leprechaun Day, you take a few minutes to admire and increase your own “pot of gold”. On Leprechaun Day, you’re encouraged to try and catch your own leprechaun. To catch a leprechaun you can create your own trap inside or outside your house. One thing you can add to your trap is a trail of Gold coins, the coins could be fake or real, but hopefully, the leprechaun will follow the coins and get inside your trap. People usually have a rainbow on top of their trap, because leprechauns are known to have their pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. Leprechaun traps are made out of shoe boxes, cages of small animals, or anything else that you can think of. Be creative, create your own Leprechaun trap and who knows, you might catch a leprechaun!
International Women’s
Day By: Lauren B.
The 8th of March was International Women's Day
(IWD). This day is celebrated worldwide and aims to
create a world that treats all genders equal. Especially
women to be treated the same as men would be in
political, social, and economic grounds.
The 2016 campaign theme for IWD is
#PledgeForParity. Parity is “the state or condition of
being equal, especially regarding status or pay”.
Women’s day is about not only women, but everyone to
be treated and to treat each other equally. The idea of
parity is the exact same thing as the feminist movement
which also promotes gender equality.
But many people ask why there’s not an International
Men’s Day if there’s an International Women’s Day. In
fact, there is an International Men’s Day, which falls on
the 19th of November. But the point of IWD isn’t to show
that women are the only people struggling with problems
due to misogyny (which is the hatred or dislike of girls or
women). Some men struggle with misandry (which is the
hatred or dislike of boys or men) which shows that
women aren’t the only gender that’s discriminated
against, denigrated, abused, or sexually objectified. IWD
is about equality. Not about making women appear above
or better than men.
IWD is about overall equally but women are rarely ever
told that they can complete a task that is primarily done
by men. Women are discouraged to be in positions of
power whereas men are encouraged to be in those same
position. But why do people think women are unfit for
certain jobs?
Gender roles are the main reason for why a woman is
told she can’t or shouldn’t do the same job as a man.
Gender roles are, by definition, “societal norms dictating
what types of behaviors are generally considered
acceptable, appropriate or desirable for a person based on
their actual or perceived sex.” These gender stereotypes
are generally stupid. A person should be allowed to do
whatever they want to, regardless of their gender identity,
gender expression, or biological sex.
The entire point of IWD is empowering women to do
what they want and eliminate oppression. It’s an
important day that shows both how far we’ve come and
how far we’ve yet to come.

Spring Décor! By: Molly W.
First D.I. Y. is St. Patrick’s Day themed! Take a garden
pot and paint it green. Than take a black piece of ribbon
and hot glue it to the pot. Finally glue a gold button or
an old belt clasp and hot glue it on the ribbon.
The next D.I.Y. is Easter themed! Then with a pencil
trace out an egg shape. Take the most colorful bot you
have and hot glue them on the traced lines. Fill the egg
with the rest of the buttons. Lastly put the finish work in
a picture frame.
The next D.I.Y. is Spring Themed! Take a mason jar and
spray paint them any bright color you desire. Then take
some marbles and the fill the jar up with the marbles. Finally
take some real or fake flowers and put them in the mason
jars.
The Final D.I.Y. is also Spring themed. Take a garden pot
and paint them white. Once they dry take gold paint and
draw some designs on the pot. Finally take some real or fake
flowers and put them in the finished product.

Cutest Easter Cupcakes By Elizabeth C.
Ingredients 1 vanilla cupcake, recipe follows About 1/3 cup White Fluff Frosting, recipe follows Green coconut grass, recipe follows 6 small candied malt balls (2 yellow, 2 pink, 2 white) 1 yellow chick peep White Airhead candy
Vanilla Cupcake 2 2/3 cups sugar 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, cut into 1-inch pieces 2 large eggs 2 large egg yolks 2/3 cup milk 2/3 cup water 2 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract 2 2/3 cups all-purpose flour 1 1/3 cups cake flour 4 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon fine salt
Fluff Frosting 1/4 cup whole milk 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract 10 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened 5 cups confectioners' sugar 1/2 cup marshmallow fluff Pinch fine salt
Vanilla Cupcakes: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line
two 12-cup cupcake tins with paper liners. Put tins on
baking sheet. Set aside. Process sugar and butter in a
food processor until very creamy, scraping sides as
needed, 1 to 2 minutes. Add the eggs and yolks, one at
a time, pulsing after each addition. Add the milk,
water, and vanilla and process to blend. Wisk both
flours, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl.
Add the dry ingredients, in 3 batches to the wet,
pulsing, and then scraping batter off the sides of the
processor as needed after each addition. Process until
the batter is very smooth and pourable like pancake
batter, about 2 minutes. Evenly pour the batter into
the prepared cups, filling them 3/4 of the way full.
Bake until the cakes are just firm and spring back
when gently pressed, and the tops are golden, 18 to 25
minutes. Cool slightly in tin, and turn out of tin when
cool enough to handle. Cool cupcakes completely on a
rack before frosting.
Cupcake Recipe continued…
Fluff Frosting: Slowly beat the butter and sugar, in
another medium bowl, with an electric mixer until
incorporated. Raise the speed to high and mix until
light and fluffy, about 5 to 7 minutes. (Occasionally
turn the mixer off, and scrape the sides of the bowl
down with a rubber spatula.) Add the fluff and salt
and reduce the speed to low. Add the milk and vanilla
mixture, scrape the bowl down, and mix until fully
incorporated. Raise the mixer to high and beat briefly
until fluffy, about 1 to 2 minutes. Frost cupcake
immediately.
Coconut Easter Grass for Cupcakes: Preheat oven
to 250 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment
paper. Place a mesh rack on top, if available. Put
coconut in a shallow bowl. While tossing with a large
spoon, add food coloring drop by drop until the
desired color is reached. A little more green than
yellow makes a pretty grass color. Add a few
tablespoons water to moisten the mixture and help
disperse the color evenly. If the color is too dark, add
additional water, as needed, to dilute to the desired
color. Drain the coconut in a sieve or strainer.Spread
the coconut in an even layer on the rack, or directly
on the lined baking sheet. Place in the oven until dry,
about 10 to 15 minutes. Use immediately, or store in
covered container for up to 3 days http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/food-network-

Travel Journal: Ireland By: Zoe Q.
What’s one the first things you think of when you think of St. Patrick’s Day? Leprechauns, gold, rainbows, green. Ireland? Yes? No? Yes. Again going on this journey into finding out more about Ireland with you guys, since I have absolutely no background knowledge on this topic. So, into the fabulous country that is Ireland.
One of the only pieces of background knowledge is that there is a Northern Ireland, but is separate from the mainland, and is a part of the United Kingdom. The reason for this being the fact that the British Parliament was being too hard on them (hmm sound familiar). And after WWI, they staged a rebellion. When they had attacked, the Parliament had several executed. This was a problem. I’m not going to bore you with a history lesson, I try to make it entertaining so; long story short, they divided the country into Northern Ireland (which were unionists) and Ireland. They were still both under the Crown, but “independent.” I’m not exactly sure how that works. But, the South was not having it. They altered their constitution and made themselves a Republic, in 1937.
Enough history! That’s Mrs. Roberts’ job. Onto culture! So, apparently, according to the website Living in Ireland |Culture & Society, the national symbol for Ireland is the harp. It appears on all Irish coins, in the government seal, and President Flag(?).
Popular culture in Ireland is like any other Western countries in terms of TV, cinema, popular music, and literature. But one thing that sticks out from the rest is pub culture. They serve as meeting places, where you can converse with neighbors and friends in relaxed atmosphere.
There is a few more things about the people of Ireland that I haven't mentioned so, HEY! don’t scroll past yet, I’m still talking! Now if I was from Ireland, I probably would have been friendlier, since Irish people are generally friendly people. And hey if you want to meet me about it, I’ll see you 12:00. Which, in “Ireland time” means 12:15 or later. It’s not that they have different ways of keeping time, it’s just that they are more relaxed about. This custom and the next clash so much, it’s*cough* not *cough* hilarious. But they have manners. They will wait in line, they will always thank the bus driver, and always say please.
Hey, dad, you sure my last name is Irish?
Whelp that is all I can tell you for now, without boring you. Féach tú! (It means “see you!”)
