At a recent general meeting, a showof hands indicated no less than 7people':,'llOuldbe interested in editing an issue; this leaves the door open for small-but-frequent issues, totally diffe%'ent editorial viewpoints, and the injection of newbloodinto the EdmontonSFfan publishing scene. ing with a charmingand beautiful compan';:ion whentheir pleasures are disrupted bythe untimely murder of a stranger whoin'"truded upon their evening. At first it ispique, vulgar curiosity if you will, .thatmovesCampbelland GwenNovakto pursuethe question of whyand by whosehand thevictim met his fate. All too soon it be-

comesobvious that there are morecomplexplots involved than anyone expected. Pur-suers becomethe pursued as C&Nare forcedto flee fromtheir orbital Cooperative tothe libertarian republic of Luna, and fromthence to even stranger societies.

Heinlein takes the opportunity in thisbook to pay a return visit to the LunaofTHEMOONIS AHARSHMISTRESS.Thosewhohave assumedthat Heinlein had a whole-hearted approval of Libertarian politicalideas will get a shocle, as will those whobelieve that unrestrained free-enterpriseCapitalism is the answer. Both societies, seen from the point of view of a pair of

fugitives, demonstrate that any .societysufficiently organized, no matter how, torequire cops and IDcards, is by its verynature. going to be more-or-less corruptand oppressive.

CAT'ssubtitle, ACOMEDYOFMANNERS,isparticularly relevant to the characters'experience with the powerstructure ofvarious communities, planets and societies.Manners, courtesy and civilized relationsbetweenmembersof a communityare the realfocus of this boole. The characters are in-

terested in surviving, but they're evenmoreinterested in. surviving with style anmutual enjoyment of the experience, an at-titude the world could use moreof.Recommended*l*!*!*!*!

    * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * ** PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE ** * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *-by Cathy Jackel

In a household of anarchists, who

washes the dishes? At an ESFACAS

    meeting, who collates Neology for

more than five m~nutes? If y ou put a

fan in a room alone, will slhe tryto start an argument anyway? The

third question is left as an

exercise for the reader, but I do

have some comments inspired by the

    first two.

The first is a result of simple

mathematics. If it takes 5 people 4

hours to finish a boring job that

leaves them no time to talk to their

friends, then it will take 25

people about 3/4 of an hour, andthey can talk to each other while

they're doing it. THIS IS A HINT!

Secondly,if more people stood up and

said, not,"I think we should do X",

    but, "I volunteer to organize X ",

no one would ever again complain

that not enough happens around here.

    THIS IS ALSO A HINT!

There are, 1 a m happy to say,

already a decent number of people in

ESFACAS who do not need to read the

above paragraph. 1 would like totake the opportunity to thank them

in print for all they have done for

    the club.

Much to my relief, this is.the

last one of these messages I'll have

to write. In a few weeks, some other

    p~~~ dedicated soul will have

taken over, and 1 shall be free to

    indulge in ESFOS's philosophy of

Fandom Without Guilt. Not that it

hasn't been an interesting year, forme anyway, There are a number of

things I'd do differently next time,

    especially in terms of delegating

    chores and recording things which

needed to be done. But there are

also some things which I a m veryproud of. .

The big one is, of course, is that

the reports of ESFACAS's demise were

    greatly exaggerated. Not that I'm

    claiming responsibility for the fact

that we're still here, but 1 like to

think I've done something to help.

    Meetings are still going strong,

there are lots of new members who

    weren't here a year ago.

I'm also glad to have rebegun t

    discount setup with various Edmont

    stores. It's a fine example of a

    beneficial symbiotic relationship,

not to mention a good reason tojoin the club. The next step, of

course, is to print up some small

cards with an ESFACAS blurb on th

front and a list of discounters o

the back, and spread them around

    town.

Finally, there was Micron. If y

all should be interested in anothe

one, I'dbe willing to organize i

    I k now, 1 k now, I'm a masochist a

    heart.

    Speaking of hearts, there will

a Valentine's Day party at my hou

    that.s 8715-120 st, on Saturday

    February 15 a t 8 pm. This event i

open to all ESFACAS members and

their friends. The themes are frui

    and veggies for the calOrie

    conscious, and chocolate for the

    calorie unconscious. Bring your o

    beverages.

On Brockman, Runte, and the Editor

by Tony Higgins. theoretical Old Guardian

and maybe a member of Them

I was interested by the various comments made

by these three people in the last issue, and decided

to break my long-standing tradition of not writing

letters. To begin, the history recounted by Allan was

surprisingly accurate, certainly from his viewpoint.

I appreciated the chance to hear from 'the other

side', although I would much prefer to keep sides

out of it. (Personal feuds may be unpleasant. but I

like them better than being accused because I am

supposedly one of THem or THEM, howeY", you

spell it.lI was not present for those events which made

up the central theme of Allan's letter, so I can't

comment on the events themselves. However, i

would like to point out that I, too, have .uffered

violence at the' hands (more precisely, the knee) of

Geotges; that has not prevented either of us from" finding a way to be more friendly in later days.

As far as the reference to the years of the Old

Guard walking in and taking over business meet-

ings at ESFCAS,there is some truth to it - more

than a little, In recent years, many of us have stayed

away in droves, however. To get on to the concerns raised by Robert, I

would like to point out that in NonCon, as in any

other political situation, the issues people believe

exist are the ones that exist for them! I won't bother

.to argue with some of Robert's points, but I would

like to comment on the matter of the Calgary con-

ventions.Yes indeed, Calgary's Onocon and ConVersion

may be better conventions than NonCon has been

recently. If so, great. I hope the example they've

given will help the people here in Edmonton bring

renewed interest and energy to NonConNine. If

these southern cousins developed better cons by

being forced to break away from the rigid control

and formula of the organizers of Edmonton's Non-Cons, then they certainly learned (and profited)

from their experience, The more power, and credit,

to them.Like Georges, I am prepared to accept many of

the criticisms made by Robert and Allan. Often, the fans who have been involved in the club, and

the con, for a long time are reluctant to give up

control of something they started. II's not an un-

usual phenomenon - ever hear of 'apron strings' 1

To describe it as 'a paranoid monopoly of control',

.however, is more than a bit extreme.I'd like to point out that I (and to my knowledge,

most other 'Old Guard' members) am more than

willing to recognize the 3W, the LoL, and anyone

else who demonstrates interest and involvement,

as a 'legitimate member of Fandom' (Robert's

phrase). I think that many of them have contributed

to the club, and the con, in ways that reflect their

views and degrees of interest. I'm more than happy

to turn the club over to them entirely; the can, I

want some further involvement in myself - let's

see if we can share it, instead,

Bouom line is I'm in fandom because I enjoy it.

I work hard putting on cons because I enlov the

work, and the opportunity to get involved with

other people who enjoy the event. I attend other

people's cons because I enjoy them, I'll willingly

listen to anyone, if thev'lI have the courtesy to

listen to me, and I'll take any suggestions on impro-

ving the club, or the con,This may not sound like the Tonv Higgins you

came to know (and sometimes, to endurel in past

vears; irs not. But I know what I said then was

how I felt then; what I believe now is what vou

have (if you've gotten this far) fusttaken the trouble

to read. Finally, I believe George, has shown one of two

rational reaction, to thl ' current situation in

ESfCAS.. First, like Georges, you can work within

the situalion,. and work for those changes you see

as important. Second, you can decide that it's no

longer enjoyable, and withdraw (from the club, if

not trom tandom). I won't criticize anyone for eitherchoice, but I encourage everyone to do one or the

other, Blaming people for problems, and accusing

people of actions and attitudes, does nothing about

    the difficulties themselves,

As I have chosen the course of becoming less

    involved in ESFCAS(and I won't organize a busi-

nessmeeting putsch), may 1offer one or two parting

shots: _ Allan, if ESFCASgoes down the drain, it will be

because people don't care enough about it to do

something. I hope it doesn't, but it may.

_ Robert, thanks for your work, your opinions, and

your involvement over the years. I haven't always

agreed (Hell, how often have I agreed with any-one?), but I have always appreciated the viewpoint.

However, you'd better be a little more careful in

the aUitudes you ascribe - they may not always

hold true,_ Georges, I may have turned Yuppie (I may always

have been a Yuppie at heart!), I may be married

(actually, that happened about NonCon,l, to the

chairman of NonConNine), but I don't like to think

of myself as complacent; I've just become involved

in 'fandoms' outside SF,such as politics. However,

I do take exception to being

Just before the Revolution THEREDS'I'ARandrNGENEERMANNYby Bogdanovrang the bellwhh the SF-mindedpeople. Their impact on

.the social life continued even after the

Revolution and Lenin vas obliged to say afew words about the author's outlook, crit-

.icizing him for his erroneous view of soc-

ialupheavals.. The first years. after the

Revolution saw a flourishing of SF. At that

time, Belyaev madethe SF scene, devotingall his talent to this genre. Bedriddenwith spinal tuberculosis for several years,he lIIl:'OteTHEHEADOFPROFESSORDOWEL,clearly understanding howa head feels andwhat it tlUnks when the body is gqne. Varshavslcy.the brothers StI'Ugatslcy, andmanyothers. Bythe mid-60s the upswingwasclearly manifested. TheStrogatslcyIstalesHARDTOBEAGOD.MONDAYBEGINSONSATURDAY,and THEBIRDSOFPREYOFTHECENTURY.C8JIleto stay in Soviet SF. Excellent humourousstories by Varshavslcywere published. andthe first works of KyrBulychevappeared.Towardthe end of the '60s the level of SF

published deteriorated, I feel due to theattitude of the publishers toward SF. rath-eI' than by a crisis in the SFcommunity.

Towardthe beginning of the '80s and uptill now, neif interesting WI'iters have comeon the !teene. These are primaz>llythose whogrewup in the '60s; their fiI'st Slllllplesofwriting found their wayinto periodicalsalready in that decade. Nowthese WI'itershave acquired a style of their own, andlearned to wite IDOreneatly and profess-ionally. Amongthese writers one would

mentionSiletslcy, Basenlco,Polcrovslcy.Gev-orlcyan, Genkinand Kapura, all living inMoscow;in Leningrad Dymov,Loginov,.:J:z.-mallov and Ryhakovcameto the fore. InKrasnoyarslcthere vas Korabelnilcov;inAbalcan,Bushkov;in Novosibirsk Kubatiev;in PermPirozhnikov. Filenlco. & Shalamov.

Jne thing that distinguishes the SFautnorsof the '80s is their scattering OV"t'a widearea; in the past the SFscene was confinedalmost exclusively to the two capitals,Moscowand Leningrad. Nowindividualschools of SFhave been created in theTranscaucasus and Baltic countries. theUkraine. Siberia. etc. In fact Soviet SFbecamemultinational in the 'BOs.

YoungSF.critics appeared on the scene:Gopman,Galcov,Kusatiev and someothers.During the last decade a numberof theseson SFhad baen successful maintained withone appli:cant baing awardedthe title ofDoctor of Philology. To increase the'.ll:t:-erary skills of youngSFwriters, a yearlywriter's WOI>kshop/seminarhas been organ-,ized. Thesepositive facts, however. hideanother tale.

Publishing houses and editorial boardsare nowprinting deplorably small quantit-ies of SF. as before. The decisions on thefurther advancementof SFadopted by theState Publishing Committeetwoyears agowere supposedly designed to improvematters

\.A>ut so far nothing of the sort happened.Moreover. the prospective plans of thepublishing houses assign very little spacefor OF. Approximately180 titles had baen

    published in 1 98 3 - one wouldconclude the

situation is not that bad. It turns outthe lion's share of that quantity is takeup by numerousrcprintings. Aportion isallotted to the so-called "concealed SF"(a term used to describe SFappearingwithout the SFlabel under the samecoveas non-SF). while the share of authenticnewSFis maddeninglysmall. This is maythe reason whysometalented SFauthors o

this decade cannot have theiI' books pub-lished. TheiI' stuff appears mostly in periodical publications or anthologies. Recently THELITERARYGAZETTEhas starteddiscUssion' on various aspects of SF. Hala dozen issues of this paper have carriedarticles of polemic nature. It's quite rewardingto follow various arguments andopinions of the readers, hut frankly onlytwomen-of-letters touched the sore spotsin today's SF. These are B.StI'ugatslcyandKyr Bulychev. The trouble with today's SFis that it is not published enough.anddefinitely not that it ignores the laws ophysics and has becomefrivolous. Bulychin his article CONCERNINGTHEPROBLEMOFTHESUMATRANRHINOCEROS1a'ote: "Whlleallthe scientists are debating the questionas to whether one can refer to the creatuas a rhinoceros. that endangeredanimal ipoised over the hrink of extinction. Stillthe pundits continue theiI' academicarguiwithout taking drastic measures to help."The simile is quite correct.

SFfan clubs appeared in this countryin the sixtie8~ it seems; I could not finan earlier mention of any. Little is knowof these early clubs, nowcalled the "FirWave":they sprang up simultaneously in omajor cities (Kiev. Bakan, Moscow,KharkLeningrad. etc). It's a matter of recordthat Kharkovfans threw a party in honouof Polish author Stanislaw Lam.Clubact-ivities were primarily confined to thediscussion of the SFnovelties and meetinwith SFwriters. Thoseclubs were separaten~ities shut off fromthe outside world.

though someof themhad theiI' SF stuffprinted in ~oca~newspapersand'tried topublish somehandwritten zines. In thelate '60s and early '70s, the "SecondWave"of fan clubs cameinto being, andwere far moreactive. Not content to justget together and chewthe SFr~ betweenthemselves.' they started looking aroundfor fellow fans and soon established contact with each other. Relations grewbeyoncorrespondence and soon one club was haviguests fromanother one. Themost importa

thing about all this was that the fan clu

chuckedtheir aloofness and started propo-gating SFamongthe general public: forinstance, they organized lectures in moviehouses prior to SF films, as well as inschools and at the institutes.

    Themoreinteresting SFworks by fanll

were being recommendedfor.publication, asfor instance, the RITE!clubs in Perm' hadmembers'stories printed in 17 regionalnewspapers. This all paved the wayfor the"Third Wave":in the '80s hundreds of fanclubs rushed onto the SFscene over merelytwo years. The "SecondWave"also wasres-ponsible for .instituting the inter..clubmeetings whichbecamethe events of consid-erable significance in the '80s. Thus inOctober 1S81, under the auspices of theRITEY:an club, the first seminar of SFfanclubs wasattended by fans and authors from

Moscow,Leningrad, Rostov, Sverdlovsk, Vil-nius, Nefteyugansketc. etc. This was fol-lowedby other such meetings in Rostov,Sverdlovsk and l
