Flow Assurance Management

OVERVIEW OF THE COURSEFlow assurance has been recognized by many operators as a critical technical activity, present in all the phases of planning, project execution, operation, and production surveillance of deep water developments.

Competency in flow assurance is critical to companies that get involved in oil and gas development in deep water. Current and future developments in deep water challenge the industry to progress flow assurance technologies to enable successful and profitable development of an ever increasing portfolio of oil and gas accumulations in both deepwater and ultra-deep water around the world.

As industry gains increased awareness for the complexity of flow assurance, particularly in the deepwater arena, industry experts are calling for more research and development while also pursuing standardization in applications based on lessons learned to help lower development & operating costs.

Flow assurance impacts every phase of field development, affecting a production system’s concept selection, design and operating strategy. Many experts also see a need for more conceptual engineering to identify flow assurance problems, such as hydrate formation, wax deposition and potential corrosion that can impact on production flow from a well to a host facilities,(platform or FPSO). The new challenges includes cold-water environment. High water cuts, increased hydrate risks due to the Hydrostatic pressure in the ultra-deep water Flow line and risers. Management of solid deposition in long offset subsea developments, coupled with the ever increasing demand for highly reliable and cost effective solutions require innovative progression of flow assurance strategies.

Prominent amongst production considerations is the thermal management strategy. With active heating systems, the operator can mitigate the deposition of solids, such as hydrates, waxes and asphaltenes, a capability which was not available with traditional passive insulation systems. Two distinct types of active heating have been successfully incorporated into a subsea production system; hot fluid circulation and electrical heating systems.
