The operators of a charitable “Noddy Train”, which has op-erated in Nelson and Tasman without incident for 29 years, have been told they now need to operate within steel safety fencing – a restriction that will see “the end” of the popular train. The Noddy Train is a quad mo-torbike towing a trailer which is dressed up to look like a train, and reaches a top speed of 12 kilometres per hour – jogging speed. It is owned by the Nelson North Lions Club and at-tends around 15 community events each year including the Brightwater School Gala. Each ride costs $2 and the money is given back to the event organ-isers, usually netting around $200 for the schools, church galas and community groups that run the events. But the latest permit applica-tion to the Nelson City Council contained a new requirement, that the area the train operates in is fenced.Secretary of the Lions club, Peter Goodman, says he was shocked by the new rule.

“They’re saying ‘just because you haven’t had an accident it doesn’t mean one won’t hap-pen’. The conditions of opera-tion are that we have to pro-vide barriers to the satisfaction of the local body and what they’re saying now is that we need those steel fences around the area that we’re operating, which is quite crazy.”In the past the Lions have put down cones and signs to warn people of the area they are op-erating in. Brightwater School princi-pal Gerald Baldwin says the Noddy Train is always one of the highlights of their annual school gala and it “would be real a shame” it was railroaded by bureaucracy.“It’s ridiculous. It’s health and safety gone mad,” Gerald says.

Nelson City Council says the certificate of registration is is-sued by the Department of Labour and it does not have the authority to change the conditions of the certificate. “We have sympathy with this issue the Club is facing and are aware of other similar rides operating without fencing,” says Clare Barton, the group manager of strategy and envi-ronment.Peter says the club has written to the Labour Department to ask for some relief but if the fencing rule is enforced the club will sell the train.“It would be impossible; we’d sell the Noddy Train. We don’t make any money on it. It’s sim-ply a charitable thing to raise money for various groups in the community.”

New rules will kill kids ride

The careers of two Nelson trainee pilots are about to take off after they received special awards at the Nelson Aviation College graduation.Oliver Griffith and Justin Stur-rock, both 20, were among 15 students who received their Diploma in Aviation at a grad-uation ceremony held at Petite Fleur at Seifried Estate Winery in Appleby this month. Oliver and Justin were also two of the top students with Oliver receiving the Best Academic Performance Domestic and Justin being awarded the Best All-round Flying Performance Domestic. All the students had completed a diploma in either flight in-struction or airline preparation after 76 to 88 weeks of study. Oliver and Justin completed the 88-week New Zealand Di-ploma in Airline Preparation which Oliver says “was inten-sive and challenging”. “We spent the first six months in the classroom doing theory which was quite hard because we just wanted to get up in the planes,” Oliver says. “Some of the instrument theory was re-ally challenging too but it was a very good course.”Both Justin and Oliver say they want to become commercial pilots and had already got their private pilots licences before they started the diploma. Oli-ver passed his private pilot’s li-cence in his last year at Garin

College while Justin completed his just as he started his studies at the Nelson Aviation College. Now they have graduated, the next step is to clock up the hours so that they can fly onto the radar of a big commercial airline like Air New Zealand. “We want to work as commer-cial pilots for an airline and fly jets,” Justin says. “Now we have the diploma, we need to get a minimum of 500 hours of fly-ing time before we are eligible to apply for a job with a big air-line.”Oliver is already accumulat-ing flying hours working as a pilot and camera operator for Nelson-based Aerial Surveys. Justin working as a baggage handler at Air Nelson while he looks for a flying job and clocks up the hours at the Nel-son Aero Club.

Justin says the diploma has given them a good start to their flying careers because it included a four-week airline integration course at the Air New Zealand Aviation Insti-tute. “It took us through all the requirements for multi-crew operations,” Justin says. “When we fly, there’s the pilot and no-body else but on the jets there’s a co-pilot and a whole crew and you have to know how to work as part of that crew.”The other graduates were Iain Abel, Sam Arnold, Stacey Cun-ningham, Matthew Eastham, Raymond Frani, Melissa Laird, Scott Martin, Jayden Moss-man, Scott McPake, Tobias Read, Jorge Serrano, David Turney and Chanthavy Pho-mmasane. Nelson Aviation College’s next diploma course starts on February 16.

The Nelson Suburban Club’s future is looking much brighter on the back of a massive financial turnaround of $600,000. The club, based in Ta-hunanui, suffered a well-publicised $369,000 deficit in the 2013 finan-cial year, leaving serious questions

about its future and various special meetings with members to find a solution. Its latest financial results show a $221,000 profit for the 2014 financial year with the turnaround put down to cost savings, as well as donations from club members.

Fresh Choice Richmond was named win-ner of the Best Off Licences at the 2014 So-ciety of Beer Advocates Awards last week. The national awards are voted by members of the Society of Beer Advocates (SOBA) and designed to recognise and encourage those who are providing outstanding prod-ucts and services to the beer community and industry. Gary Watson, owner and operator of Fresh Choice Richmond, says he was ecstatic to hear they had won the popular award.“Craft beer has been a passion of ours for quite some time. Raymond Nicholson, who

runs our craft beer section, hosted craft beer evenings last year which worked very well,” he says. “As we are a little guy in terms of super-markets, we are big supporters of boutique beers and small locally-owned breweries. People from around New Zealand com-ment on what a good range of craft beer we have in our store and we have even had an enquiry from a man in Australia who had heard of our selection to say he was com-ing over and wanted to know what times we were open”, says Gary.SOBA is a consumer-based organisation involved in educating, promoting and ap-preciating a diverse range of quality beer.

Two children and two teenagers had a lucky es-cape on Monday night when they were rescued from the sea off Rocks Rd after their small in-flatable boat flipped around 8pm. Search and Rescue coordinator, Constable Dave Cogger, says the children were trying to push the semi-submerged boat against the wind and the tide when they were rescued by the Coastguard and Surf Rescue. No one was wearing a life jacket. All four were taken to hospital by ambulance suffering the effects of hypothermia and taking on sea water. “It’s pretty shocking that children this young would be taken across the harbour in any boat without a life jacket, but in this in-flatable boat it was incredibly risky,” Dave says.

Richmond’s longest serving chief fire officer, Roger Williams, has passed away marking the end of a dynasty that served the Richmond Vol-unteer Fire Brigade for 67 years.Roger served 36 years at the Richmond brigade, starting in 1951 and retiring in 1988. He became chief fire officer in 1967 when he followed in the footsteps of his father, Fred, who served from 1930 and was chief fire officer at Richmond from 1946 until his sudden death in 1961.“Roger was chief fire officer when I joined in 1985 and he was a very good fire fighter and very fair chief,” Rich-mond’s current chief, Ralph Lonsdale told the Waimea Weekly. “The brigade was his life and it was also his father’s life - they both dedicated a lot of time to the community.”Ralph says Roger showed excellent management, guiding the Richmond brigade through some challenging times includ-ing the restructuring of the fire service and re-locating the town’s fire station from Queen St to

Oxford St in 1982. Roger was also a Nelson-Marlborough provin-cial association president and led the brigade through some of the region’s biggest fires includ-ing the Rabbit Island fire of February 1967.

Another one of Roger’s for-mer fire fighters, Eddie Lam-mas who served the Rich-mond brigade from 1960 to 1999, says Roger was “an excellent fire fighter and ran a really tight ship”. “He grew up with the fire brigade so it was only natural that he followed his father,” Eddie says. “It was a very good brigade under Roger.” Roger, who was chief elec-trician at the Stoke freezing works, was also a passion-ate horseman, breeding and training a number of pacers including winning mare Spe-cial Miss. Although Roger’s children, Wendy, Vicki, Jan and his late son Murray, didn’t be-come involved in the fire bri-

gade, Jan and grandson Dylan Stratford shared his love for horses, both becoming professional horse trainers. Roger is survived by his wife Pat. He was 79.

A group of mountainbiking enthusiasts are holding a pub-lic meeting next Tuesday to seek support for plans for a new mountainbike park in the Tunnicliff Forest in Wai-iti, near Wakefield. The Tasman District Council-owned Tunnicliff Forest is a valuable recreational resource with walkers, horse riders and mountainbikers already us-ing the area. Now a group of mountainbikers from around the Wakefield district are hop-ing to develop the forest into a “more organised, formal and family friendly mountainbike trail system”.Spokesperson Jude Rawcliffe says the group has already held discussions with Tasman Dis-trict Council, Nelson Moun-tain Bike Club and Moun-tainbike Trails Trust about the proposal. She says the 101 hectare Tunnicliff Forest is an ideal location for a mountain-bike park because it already has well-graded access roads and is not too steep.Jude says the next step is to hold the public meeting to present the plans to the com-munity and get an indication of the amount of support for the plan.“It will have to get the support of the community to go ahead,”

Jude says. “Obviously the com-munity will be the ones using it and they will also have to help maintain it.”Jude says it will also be impor-tant to work with existing us-ers of Tunnicliff Forest includ-ing horse riders and walkers. The trails would not be built near popular horse riding trails around the periphery of the forest, she says. The plan already has the sup-port of the Mountainbike Trails Trust which will be involved in the construction of the trails and trustee Chris Mildon says they are excited about the pro-

posal. “It’s an ideal location for a mountainbike park be-cause it’s nice and flat and it has a great area of old native forest,” Chris says. “We also want to get a good spread of mountainbike facilities around the district and there’s nothing out here for the Wakefield and Brightwater communities.”Chris says the group plans to build around six trails includ-ing “family friendly trails” suit-able for inexperienced riders. The public meeting is being held at 25 Totara View Road in Wakefield at 6.30pm on Janu-ary 27.

For Tyrell Archibald, life was good, he had a loving wife Nyssa and beautiful twin daughters and was about to start building their dream home. Sadly, those dreams were shattered in 2012, when the 35 year old builder was di-agnosed with ColorectalCancer.Tyrell had always loved his family’s fourth generation farm in Mahana and plans for a house had begun, but these were put on hold while he concentrated on fighting his illness. In 2013, he hoped the cancer had been beaten and started

building plans again, when in November he suffered anoth-er setback, a perforated bowel. This resulted in him having to be fed through a tube for a year and building plans were again put aside. At the end of November 2014, he was dealt the strongest of blows when he was told the cancer had returned and this time had spread to his lungs and prostate. The doctors advised it was ter-minal and he had six to nine

months to live.During this time, in a cruel twist of fate, tragedy struck the young family again, when his mother passed away suddenly and Nyssa’s mother passed away just after Christmas. However, despite all of this, he had never given up on his dream of building his family a home, and his friends and family rallied around to make his dream become a reality. “I always wanted to give the kids what I had growing up, if they have anything like I had they will enjoy it”, says Tyrell.Friends Tony Riordan, Gary Blair, Louise Fry and Rebecca

Anderson have been the driving force behind the scenes, fund-raising and gathering support. They’ve organised various activi-ties and started Project Archibald on the Givealittle website, which has raised over $35,000 for the cause.“So many people have helped with this project on all levels, and people have been turning up to the site offering things such as materials, their time and baking”, says Tyrell. All builders on site are donating their time and Tyrell’s best friend, Ben Robson, quit his job in Aus-tralia to work on the build for as long as it takes to complete. “It has been a very humbling expe-rience, I have had a connection with most of the people helping in some way or another but didn’t really know them too well. I flat-ted with the scaffolder and there is another guy I went to school with, and they’ve all come togeth-er to help out. Two of the builders used to be my apprentices and it is quite funny that they now think they are the bosses.’He says the last thing he wants is for people to think that they have to work on the house. “I hope they are enjoying it. I don’t want them to feel they have to do it”, says Tyrell.Tyrell is still in control of the building project and the builders run everything by him first, but

realise that he may have to take a step back if his next bout of chem-otherapy, which starts this week, has the same ill side-effects as his first bout.“It has been my dream to build here for so long. I want to be hands-on and don’t want to sit down and watch it go up before my eyes. If I am sick and the chemo doesn’t give me a better quality of what life I have left, then there is no point in me doing it if it prolongs my life by one or two more months that would be nice,” says Tyrell.Even though he is not well and times are tough, Tyrell and his wife Nyssa still manage to tease each other and joke. He says that he wants the building process to ultimately be a happy and fun ex-perience.They hope the new house will be finished by the time winter kicks in and before the twins start at Mahana School in August. The four year old girls are very excited about their new house and have been helping their dad on site, wearing their own builder aprons and hammering in nails. When asked what they love about their dad they both say “he is the best dad in the world because he takes us to the new house and buys us ice cream”.If you would like to donate to Pro-ject Archibald visit www.givealit tle.co.nz/cause/projectarchibald

Over the past 12 years the Visual Arts Society of Tapawera’s membership has grown and so has the group’s artistic reputation, which will be on view for all to see at their annual exhi-bition.The display, featuring artists from the area and its surrounding valleys, attracts several hundred visitors each year and is renowned for its high quality. It includes paintings and creations using a wide range of different me-dia and all artworks are for sale to the public. This year’s guest artist is Gwen Nicolson from Brightwater, who specialises in sculpture us-

ing fabric-hardening Paverpol products. She has created numerous pieces from fabric ranging in size from small to larger than life size. Some of these will be on display, along with a new range of contemporary pieces hand sculpted in a mixture of mediums. Some of the works include human and animal figurines, driftwood pieces, plus a number of others in progress. The opening of the 12th annual Visual Arts Society of Tapawera (V.A.S.T) exhibition will be held at 7pm on Friday January 23, at Shed-wood Hall, Main Road Tapawera. The free en-try exhibition will run at the hall from Janu-ary 24 through to February 2, 10am to 5pm.

Volunteers for cricket, Wednesday, Janu-ary 14: More than 50 people came forward to volunteer for the Black Caps game at Saxton Oval yesterday, after a story was published in Waimea Weekly last week. Hayden Bryant of Sport Tasman says more than 30 of those came forward within 24 hours of the Nelson Weekly coming out and the rest the day after, when the Waimea Weekly was delivered.

Veca Restored, Wednesday, 17, December: After the story of the re-launched boat Veca, Waimea Weekly received an email from Nel-son’s Colin Harrison. After Roy Harvey built the boat in 1929 and sold it in 1941 due to the rise in petrol during WWII, Colin’s grandfa-ther, Bob Gibbons purchased it in the 1950s, berthing it at Port Nic in Wellington. He then sold it in the early 1960s. The boat was then bought back in 1968 by Roy Harvey’s son Bruce Harvey, returning it to the family that have now owned it for nearly five generations. The boat has recently undertaken a refit and is out on the water again under the ownership of Roy Harvey’s granddaughter Judith Glue and her husband Pete Glue.

Temperatures off the mark:Something seriously needs to be done about our temperatures!!

On the news tonight it said we got to 25! Yet at 7.10pm I took this photo and it showed 26! You would think it got cooler but obviously not!! I know they take the temperature out at the airport but I think something needs to be done about this as it is not a true, fair reading! I mean to say WHO lives at the airport!! If true readings were done then maybe more people would want to come see our stunning city!! Sarah-Hope Bailey.

Fantastic art:The exhibition by Marilyn An-drews at Taylor’s in Nelson is

fantastic! This is some of the best art I have ever seen. Her use of colour is so talented and unusual. Dan McGuire.

Tomahawk attack in Stoke:Must be lacking things to do in Stoke. Tuesday evening was ex-

citing too. Bring us a community centre with skate park. Please. Andrea Grocott.

I agree. The youth need a com-munity centre, etc. That’s what

happens when the council don’t invest in them. Casey Anderson.

Guys... guys... time to bury the hatchet.

Benjamin North.

Bomb threat at Nelson WINZ office:Of all the regions, the Nelson and Blenheim staff have had the

most of this life-threatening crap to deal with. They deal with upset and angry people as part of their jobs, but death threats and burning down work places on Christmas morning.... seriously, such A-holes! I’m so sick of this crap. Take away their help give them a shovel and a paddock where they can either dig for water and plant veges or dig a hole and jump in! Plenty of people struggle to make ends meet and pay bills. Those who fall on hard times deserve respect and help and a community who are there for them. But death threats, mur-ders and the rest, that is just disgusting! Amanda Cuff.

Wasting people’s time. Honestly, the sooner these losers realise

that the country doesn’t owe them a liv-ing the better. Brenda Kenny.

Sounds like one ‘loser’. And what should we do with people

who can’t find work? Let them starve or freeze to death? Next time you want to drive on a road or go to the hospital let me know, so I can decide if I’m happy to spend my taxes on that. Rachel Boyack.

If you can’t get a job, you aren’t trying hard enough.

Jake Bertram.

There are also people who want nothing more than to work, but

have medical reasons or they live in a town that doesn’t have jobs. Look at Motueka at this time of year, it’s full of Pacific Islanders and European’s and the orchard owners employ more of them than they do locals. Andrew Boyce.

Dog saved at beach:I’d like to say a huge thanks to those at the back beach this af-

ternoon (Christmas Eve) who tried to save our wee dog. I didn’t get any names, sorry, but you were all great. Cathy Leov.

Monster slide gets go-ahead:There shouldn’t have been any question on it at all really, Nel-

son needs to pull finger as Richmond is growing faster than Nelson. We seem to be at a standstill with growth. Pauline Van Der Plas.

Great, this kind of activity is great for the kids and something

different. Nelson needs to approve this kind of activity in the future. Brenda Kenny.

You asked about the monster slide on Facebook. I say it’s awe-

some. (Via text).

With the stress of Christmas at an end, now is the time to make a trip into Super Liquor and stock up for these beautiful 2015 summer weekends. With long nights inviting you outside, and a bar-beque on the go, there’s nothing better than sip-

ping away on your favourite drink. Whether you’re a gin and tonic kind of person, you prefer a glass of our local wines, or perhaps a cold beer is your favourite way to celebrate sum-mer, Super Liquor is here for your convenience, stocking the brands you know and love. If you haven’t

been to R i c h -mond Su-per Liq-uor lately,

head in and check out their new and improved store. An Open Day on Saturday 24 is the perfect chance to meet the team and see the big chang-es that have been made, including new signage that has swept through Super Liquor stores across the coun-try with a bright, light blue takeover from the navy alongside their tra-ditional red and white colouring. Super Liquor has also incorporated a new mascot to represent the busi-nesses. Stores were presented with

a choice of icons but it was the Super Liquor Chameleon that won out over the rest and can now be seen sitting high and proud, overlook-ing Salisbury Rd. At their Open Day this Saturday, Richmond Super Liquor will be celebrating with in-house specials, competitions, spot prizes and a sau-sage sizzle. Richmond Super Liquor are staunch supporters of Nelson Speedway and also the Nelson Tigers stockcar team. They will have a Nelson Tigers stockcar on display so that you can get up close and see how they look when they aren’t racing around the track. Super Liquor in Tahunanui is also receiving new branding which will begin this year. As well as a new look nationwide, Richmond and Tahu-nanui Super Liquor are making a few changes of their own. The inside and outside of the Rich-mond store have been painted, new flooring has been laid down and a new RTD chiller has been installed. “I think it just brightens the shop up, you feel a bit more positive about it and proud

about the shop. Hopefully customers are finding the changes good. We had a whole lot of chillers around the walls and they’ve all gone, we’ve just got one big walk in chiller now,” says Richmond Super Liquor manager, Maree Pascoe. With over 140 shops across the country, your local Super Liquor store is backed up by a well known and reputable company with the resources to of-fer you the best price and the best product. Super Liquor Richmond and Tahuna stock everything in the way of wine, beer, and spirits and “if someone wants something that we haven’t got in stock, we will endeavour to find it for them,” says Maree.

Best & West (2004) LTD are proud to have built and installed a Coolstore for Richmond Super Liquornumbers to cater for. Along with ice, the team

also has a supply of glassware that is free of charge to hire when you purchase alcohol for a function; they’ll even lend you a bar to set up at no cost. These additional services give Su-per Liquor that friendly, personal touch that their customers love and are what makes Su-per Liquor a trusted name in the community. Super Liquor Richmond is heavily involved in the community through their support of sev-eral sporting teams. “They support us, so we support them,” says Maree, and this includes the Nelson Speedway association, Nelson Ti-gers, Waimea Old Boys, Wanderers Rugby Club, Brent Nicholls Racing and The Stables Richmond Rabbits league team. Supporting locals is an important aspect of the business and it isn’t just the community’s sports teams who benefit. Maree understands how hard it can be to fundraise successfully which is why, on more than one occasion, they’ve set up the barbeque outside to raise money for kids working towards trips like World Challenge, and customers love their dedication to the community too says Maree. Super Liquor Richmond and Tahuna pride themselves on great customer service, which is another reason why they’re such a popu-lar choice for those after their favourite drop. “The staff that are here have been here for quite a considerable length of time,” says Ma-ree, and their years of knowledge, as well as training from Super Liquor Holdings, has meant they are, more often than not, able to help customers with any questions or deci-sions. Whether you’re after a bottle of wine to complement you cooking or you’re trying to suss out the perfect gift for someone special, the Super Liquor team will come to your aid and make sure you walk out the door with what you need. Don’t hesitate to take advan-tage of their knowledge or advice; they’re al-ways happy to help. With so much variety to choose from, it might not be possible to decide which gift to get someone, in which case a Super Liquor gift voucher will be much appreciated for that

special occasion. You can buy vouchers on-line or in store and if you want to check out the latest Super Liquor specials, sign up and have them emailed to you so you’re the first to know when there’s a great deal on your fa-vourite brands, or you could pop into either one of the stores and say hello to the team. No matter what you plan on getting up to this summer, do it with the help of Super Liquor, they’re open every day and they’re looking forward to filling your glass.

Proud to supportthe Richmond Rodeo

It’s rough, it’s tough, it’s the Richmond Rodeo, and it’s coming to you again from the Richmond show grounds this weekend. The annual rodeo will once again entertain its audience with the thrills, spills and action that have made it a favourite on the community calendar, so come on down for a day of rodeo fuelled fun. The Richmond Rodeo is part of a national circuit where cowboys and cowgirls compete around the country in a bid for prize money. The more money won, the more points earned, with the main goal being a spot in the top eight for the National ti-tle. There’s a lot of commitment required to travel, with horse in tow, to rodeos around the country, but to get the most points it’s in every serious cow-boy and cowgirl’s interest to participate in as many as possible. This year’s rodeo will include riders from Kaitaia to Invercargill and, with national ti-tle holders competing in every event, there’s sure to be some impressive sights for spectators. Some of the South Island’s top bronco stock, purpose-bred for rodeos, will be taking to the arena, along with a truck load of 8 Second Bulls ready for a chance to toss some cowboys. Richmond Rodeo secretary, Tina Angus-Phyn, says the event will

also showcase an impressive number of Barrel Racers. “We have a record number of barrel rac-ers competing, which is fantastic. Often we might have 13, 15 or 18; if we had 20 it would be big, but this year we will have over 30, including top New Zealand barrel racers, so that’s amazing, and that’s an event requiring total balance, total speed and total control. The training for those girls to get to that level is amazing.” There are over 200 entries into this year’s rodeo, which kicks off at 11:30am with bucking broncos and barrel racing. The local barrel racing lets chil-dren from local pony clubs enter on the day for $5. It’s a great chance to get into the spirit of the rodeo for any young, aspiring cowboy or cowgirl and “to ride their horses amongst thousands of people is pretty cool,” says Tina. There will be calf rides for kids under 40kg - chil-dren can bring a long-sleeved shirt and a pair of long trousers and ride their own bucking bronco before the second division events finish around 1pm and the grand entry begins. Canadian an-nouncer David Adams will lead the day’s pro-ceedings, bringing an authentic Canadian twang to the rodeo. The flags of Canada, USA, Australia

and New Zealand will be carried on horseback into the arena where the Cowboys Prayer will be said, asking for safety over the arena and show-ing respect for those cowboys and horses that have passed on. Then it’s time for the rodeo we all know and love. The Richmond Rodeo Club have pulled out all the stops to bring you a show to remem-ber with the countries rodeo experts taking on the magnificent 8 Second Bulls from Rangiora, the Broncos from Waimate, Team Roping, Steer

Wrestling and Barrel Racing, as you sit safe in your seats. While the adrenalin-fuelled action isn’t to be missed, there are plenty of sideshows to keep everyone in the family entertained, with Flos-sie the Balloon Lady and a bouncy castle, not to mention plenty of food stalls. Dave Walker will also be there on the day with his Clydesdale horses, offering lolly scrambles to the audience between events. Discounted pre-sale tickets to the rodeo can be purchased from the Richmond Mall informa-

Bu-nga and Nuttavut Krataitong, owners of Chai Yo Restaurant and Takeaways in Rich-mond and also Chai Yo Takeaways in Nelson, would like to wish all of their loyal customers a Happy New Year.2014 was a busy year for Bu-nga and Nuttavut who have established two new restaurants in Blenheim while their dedicated team con-tinued to operate the Nelson and Richmond businesses. Although they have missed hav-ing regular contact with their loyal local custom-ers, Bu-nga says she is delighted that the team have continued to operate the restaurants so well, ensuring the continued support of the local community. “We’d particularly like to thank our faithful customers and wish them a happy year in 2015,” says Bu-nga. “I have really missed having regular contact with everyone, but it is great to catch up with them when I get a chance to come home to Nelson.”As soon as you step into Chai Yo you’ll notice the welcoming environment that owner Bu-nga Krataitong has created as well as the finest Thai cuisine. Authentic in taste and prepared

with passion and precision, the food will take your taste buds on a trip to Thailand. Chai Yo is hugely popular with locals for being the only local eatery to serve unique dishes like crunchy

chicken with creamy co-conut sauce and crunchy chicken with sweet soya sauce. “We are thinking about updating our menu soon, and we’d love to have some feedback from customers about what they would like to see on our menu. If you have any ideas, please make sure you let the team know,” invites Bu-nga.

It is important to Bu-nga and the Chai Yo team to support the local community and they like to give back to the people who support them. Their loyalty cards are one way of doing this and in the past they have regularly supported local teams, individuals and charities in their fundraising efforts by offering vouchers for raffles and quizzes. If you are planning a fun-draiser in 2015, talk to the team at your local Chai Yo to see how they can help. Bu-nga’s cell phone number is 021 142 6492 or you can email: [email protected]

Richmond Athletics Isabel Neal became the first member of the club to receive a Nick Willis Scholarship after she won three gold medals at the South Island Col-gate Games at the Caledonian Ground in Dunedin last weekend.Isabel, 13, won the 100m, 200m and 400m to complete a sprints triple in the girls 13 age group at the games for seven to 14 year olds. And that performance was enough for her to be awarded one of the four Nick Willis Scholarships that give aspiring young athletes $500 to help further their sporting goals and dreams. It is the sec-ond scholarship that Isabel was been awarded after receiving Motueka High School’s Emerging Talent scholarship. Is-abel, who lives in Mapua, will be attend-ing Motueka High School this year when

she will join Tony Aitkenhead’s athletics academy.Isabel has been coached by her mother, Sue, who was a sprinter and hurdler in Hong Kong. Although Sue represented Hong Kong at a junior level she says her daughter “is a much better runner than I was”. “She’s running times now at 13 that I was running when I was 17,” Sue says. Isabel won the 100m in 13.54sec, 200m in 27.65sec and 400m in 61.43sec all run in windy conditions. Although Isabel en-joys running all three sprint distances she says she is likely to focus on the 400m this

year when she will be coached by Tony. Richmond’s Adam Stack also won gold in the 11 boys shot put while Gregor Wilson won silver in the 14 boys 100m. It was a good result for the club which only took 20 athletes to the meeting that featured 950 competitors from 39 clubs.Athletics Nelson won two bronze medals, with Jordan Stirling-Rowling, 12, earning his in the 400m and Joseph Ford, 13, fin-ishing third in the discus.“It was one of our most successful Col-gate Games especially with Isabel win-ning the scholarship,” Richmond club president Jason Stack says. “Most of our athletes made their finals and just about all of them got personal bests.’Richmond’s young athletes will be in ac-tion again in the Russell Cup in Takaka on February 15.

Well, the weather has been reasonably kind to all over the New Year, with quite a few low wind mornings and the usual sea breezes in the afternoon.Word is the snapper have schooled up for spawn-ing time so expect to have less success on the rod and reels and even setlines for the next few weeks while they are busy. At this time of year we still hear of a few big snaps getting caught but it’s normally the same few stories told to most of the Nelson fishing folk. However in saying that, during spawning time, snapper can decide to eat at any time and also any part of the tide as a quick snack to keep them going. Some even get caught at dead low tide when there is no current so they have a little bite. The good news is that after a few weeks spawning they have a small rest up then go on the feed big time to recover condi-tion and enjoy the warm water and plentiful baitfish in the bay. Some good reports are coming in from around the region, of kingfish everywhere here in the Bay, down the Sounds and D’Urville Island. Great news for our fishery in the next few years. Kenepuru has had some good snaps showing up and now with most of the holiday traffic gone it may be a good place to visit.D’Urville Island always fishes well and is a magical place to even just boat to or around. Both sides of Tas-man Bay have been fishing well and of course the “spat lines” off from Riwaka are always creating they own F.A.D (fish attracting device) chain of species. The local spear fishers are having some success when the water

is clear enough to see what their tar-get is with many hitting the favourite spots at the Glen and also over the spat lines. While on the spear fish-ing topic, boaties need to be aware of keeping an eye out for these guys’ safety floats, they are normally a red oblong float and sometimes have a little safety flag up off the top of them, so if you see one make sure to slow down and take a wide berth as quite often they are in twos and threes. The water temperature has warmed up enough for some early albacore tuna to have been caught. However, these require quite a lot of effort to get onto but are an exciting fish to catch with high speed runs under the boat and cool colours in the clear wa-ter they frequent. Remember to take plenty of ice and bleed immediately and ice down if you wish to keep these in prime eating condition. Please remember safe boating and water sport principals as there have been far too many water-associated fatalities this holiday season around the country.

Nelson road cyclist George Bennett’s big goal this season is to break through for his first win as a professional rider.George headed across the Tas-man last week to join his new World Tour team, TeamLot-toNL, for the season-opening Santos Tour Down Under. Al-though he has performed cred-itably in a number of big tours since turning professional in 2012, the 24-year-old has yet to win a stage or one-day race - something he is determined to change.“I really want to win a race - that’s my big goal. I won a few when I first went overseas but haven’t got a win since I turned pro.“I need to get a win and get that unreal buzz when you cross the line first. I’m in pretty good shape physically and mentally and I’m joining a really good team so hopefully I can do it.”George will have his first op-portunity to chase a stage win in the Tour Down Under which started on Tuesday. “I won’t be in top shape for the race but I love racing in the heat so who knows. I’ll also be better off than a lot of the Eu-ropean-based guys who will be jet-lagged and coming out of their winter.”As well as chasing his first win, George also wants to try and deliver more consistent results. Although George experienced some exhilarating highs with

Cannondale last season, in-cluding a top 10 start to the Vuelta Espana, he also plum-meted to some soul-destroying lows.“I need to be more consist-ent and a big part of that will be being managed a lot better at my new team. They are very big on sports science and nu-trition and that’s going to help me take the next step up.“I haven’t met them yet but I’ve been in contact and I really like what I’ve seen. I’ve also had a really good off-season in Nel-son and feel good mentally and physically.”George says the Tour Down

Under will be followed by a team training camp in Spain before racing in a series of one-day and stages races including Paris-Nice and Ciclista a Cata-lunya in March. If he shows good form in those races, it will increase his chances of be-ing selected for the bigger tours later in the season. “I’m really excited about my new team and getting back to the pro-tour. I will be riding for Wilco (team-mate Wilco Kelderman) in the early races but after that it will depend on how I go.”The 863km Tour Down Under finishes on Sunday.

Although he is still a cricket fan, planning a trip to South Africa this year for the World Golden Oldies Cricket Festival in Cape Town, Craig’s sport-ing passion for the last 30 years has been run-ning. “I gave up rugby when I was 18 and was look-ing for something different,” Craig says. “I was living in Appleby at the time and someone I worked with said ‘why don’t I try running’ so I did.“I really enjoyed the freedom of running and being able to go anywhere. I was also doing a bit of road cycling at the time too but was getting frustrated because it was limited to the roads - it was more fun going running and get-ting off the beaten track.”Craig joined Waimea Harriers in 1985 and started competing in club races around Nel-son. He especially enjoyed the Queen Char-lotte Relay and club cross-country races finish-ing third in the annual Parker Shield when it was held around the old Ngawhatu farm in the late 1980s. “Club running was a lot more competitive back then. Waimea Harriers had 10 senior men’s teams in the Queen Charlotte Relay one year which is pretty amazing.“I did a few marathons but mainly enjoyed cross-country races and training around places like Rabbit Island and along the banks of the Waimea River. I could run 10 kilometres in around 37 minutes in those days but really I

never more than just a good club runner.”It was only a matter of time before Craig start-ed helping run the club, serving on the com-mittee and spending six years as vice-president or president and seven as club captain. He also spent countless hours helping set up courses and is presently planning the half marathon course for the South Island Masters Games in Nelson in October.“It’s what happens when you join a club. Some-one tapped me on the shoulder and said it’s your turn, so I joined the committee.”Waimea Harriers’ Alan West says Craig has “particular expertise at organising events and, as well as Saturday runs, has organised relay teams, club trips and created, measured and set-up running courses”. “He has also been the liaison person with the South Island Masters Games and has been a main organiser of their running events over many years.”Alan says it is fitting that Craig received his life membership this year when Waimea Harriers is celebrating its 50th Jubilee. For information about club’s events go to the website waimeaharriers.nelson.org.nz

Do you have a great community arts project that needs some money to make it happen?Tasman District Council’s Creative Communities Scheme has money to help groups and individuals running arts projects in the Tasman District.Creative Communities provides funding to support community involvement in the arts, whether that’s music, theatre, festivals, mural painting, outdoor sculptures, art in public spaces, kapa haka, singing, art workshops or something else.Funded by Creative New Zealand, the Council’s Creative Communities Scheme is designed to support opportunities for communities, urban or rural, to have a go at art whether it’s for hobby or to develop a career, said fund co-ordinator Mike Tasman Jones. “We’re looking for art projects with broad community involvement, involve young people or projects that support the diverse arts and cultural traditions of local communities.”The Tasman Creative Communities Scheme funding in 2014 enabled theatre groups like “Body and Space” to workshop “The Map” with local Golden Bay performers aged 13 to adults before the community performance. The Embroiders Guild were able to host a weekend of workshops for beginners to “old hands”, budding authors were able to attend a “Breaking into Print” workshop, 50 members of the Mapua community were able to roll up their sleeves, mix up the grout and mosaic one wall of the public toilets and 500 Richmond residents watched a large cast of locals at the outdoor summer theatre in Washbourn Gardens. The Creative Communities Scheme funding, alongside a huge amount of energy and enthusiasm from the applicants, is what enabled these opportunities and many others to take place. If you have a great community arts project needing some dollars to make it happen the Tasman Creative Communities Scheme maybe just what you’re looking for. There are three rounds of applications per year. The next round closes on 10 March 2015, for projects starting after 1 April, the next rounds later in 2015 close 10 July and 10 November. There is $39,007.80 allocated per annum with allocations averaging $1,000. For application forms go to www.tasman.govt.nz and search ‘creative communities’ or contact Mike Tasman-Jones on Ph. 03 543 8400 for further information.
