I hope this finds you well and enjoying the fresh Spring blossoms! Thank you to all of the artists who contributed to our recent 50/50 art auction. Thank you also to all the supporters of this event. Combined, it was a success with over $13,000 raised – split equally between the Suter Art Gallery and the Nelson Suter Art Society. The NSAS are currently sourcing quotes for our promised partitions, ensuring earthquake strengthening is included. Watch this space for updates. July saw new members exhibit stunning new works. Recently, with another membership selection, we were inundated with an unprecedented 14 prospective artist members applying. Six were accepted and another three joined as art graduates. A warm welcome to you all. For those who unfortunately missed out this time round – please do apply again. Georgina (mentioned below) was also turned away her first time, as were a few others who are now very strong and active members. August was a busy month. Following the 50/50 auction we opened our annual Spring Exhibition. Guest artist,Cathy Carter, spoke at the opening, giving those attending an in depth peek into her practice and process. Wild Tomato attended – you can find images of this event in the October issue. A successful exhibition, with over $12,000 in sales recorded. Another popular initiative is the favoured bus trip to Picton. Visiting both the highly coveted Mark Stevenson Collection and The Diversion Gallery, the third bus trip took place on 5 October, again receiving rave reviews from all in attendance. Please check out the Wild Tomato article for more detail regarding this. (Note: should read organized by the NSAS) I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate Georgina Hoby Scutt on her almost sell out exhibition, ‘Queens Greens’. Only 1 work of 16 remained unsold. A well-conceived and beautifully hung exhibition that showcased new works exquisitely. Strong and bold brushwork and colour culminated in a triumph of landscape painting that is a stunning progression in Georgie’s signature style. PLEIN AIR CREATING DAY.

Cable Bay. Saturday 23 November.Meet Cable Bay at the Pepin Island end of the causeway at 10.00 am.Be aware that the road is narrow and winding, and has been lowered at stream crossings necessitating reduced speeds.

Marg Fairs, an experienced plein air painter, and Cathy Jones invite members to join them in a day of outdoor creativity at Cable Bay where there is a good choice of subjects to inspire you (as well as plenty of parking and two toilets). Bring your own materials (pencil, charcoal, pastel, pen and ink, watercolours, acrylics, oils, threads or fibre etc), a medium that you think you can work quite quickly with. Also an easel or drawing board (or your knee), something to sit on, something you can put materials on/in that you can access easily when in position, water/turps etc in containers, rags, something to take your, maybe still wet, work home in. Remember to bring lunch and drink, warm jacket, hat, sunscreen and insect repellant. Any changes and a reminder will be sent by email nearer the time. NEW MEMBERS

We have recently welcomed the following artists as new members to our Art Society-

Alina Adamczyk, Lauren Kitts, Dharma Penketh, Kiitish Penketh, Nicola Reif, Matthew Thornicroft, Juliana Trolove, Jill Seeney, Jonathan Tomlinson.

NEW MEMBERS’ ARTIST PROFILES

Alina Adamczyk I was born in Cracow in Poland. Strongly influenced by its rich history, medieval landmarks, abundance of museums and art galleries, I studied conservation of art, focusing on architecture. At that time, however, painting was more of a hobby, and I decided to change my career to social work.I moved to New Zealand in 2012 where I lived in Taranaki, Gisborne and now Nelson. Overwhelmed by the beauty of New Zealand I initially started capturing all the amazing views on photographs and, after joining a local art class, also on paintings. I quickly developed a highly realistic style of painting and within a relatively short time I started exhibiting my work. Approximately one year ago I was invited to become one of the Wall to Wall Art (then Art @203) Gallery members. My paintings feature New Zealand landscapes, seascapes, wildlife and flowers. I mainly use oils and often paint on panels for a smooth realistic finish.

Lauren Kitts In 1985 I gained a Bachelor of Arts with a major in sculpture from the University of California in Santa Cruz. Since that time I have become a New Zealand citizen and lived and worked in the Auckland area as a sculptor. I have attended over 30 stone and wood carving symposia nationally and internationally, have had work in many shows, exhibited in galleries widely, and have consistently remained optimistic and prolific about making art to this day. In 2017 I moved to the Tasman area, and am now opening my first owner operator outdoor sculpture gallery. It features over 25 large to medium outdoor stone sculptures and some guest works from metal artist Chris Moore. Hawks Valley Sculpture Gallery opened on the 25th of October this year. A prevalent theme in my current work concerns the climate change crisis that faces the world, and the big skies and wide open vistas of my new environment are also providing new inspirational forms. www.laurenkitts.co.nz

Juliana Trolove Thank you very much for accepting me into the Nelson Suter Art Society. It is a great privilege to be amongst such a fantastic group of artists in our region. I am a practicing graphic designer, illustrator and maker of things!Oils are my new passion. With fabulous colours, textures and techniques it is both challenging and rewarding. At present I am focussing on floral work which for me is important for two reasons; firstly the variety possible within still life gives me opportunities to develop my skill as a painter; secondly it limits my subject to a confined space and environment which is what I need as I am working towards my first solo exhibition at Red Gallery in November 2019. I find it is often a tumultuous process, wrangling the painting into a form which is representative of the subject matter.

Report on Critique Session

Sunday 1 September 2019 David Ryan ran a productive critique session in the McKee Gallery attended by 4 artists and 5 observers. Each painting submitted was discussed by the group in a positive manner covering composition, colour and tonal values. Artists identified problems they were experiencing with their painting and the group, with David’s guidance, discussed ways that the paintings could be taken to another level. Subjects covered in the general discussion were: Media, covering oil, acrylic and watercolour Merits of painting on quality canvas, MDF, plywood, hardboard or hessian Importance of preparing your chosen substrate using the correct primer. The session went for 2 hours and those attending indicated that it was appreciated and an afternoon productively spent. Peter Copp

Presentation Guidelines for artists submitting 2D art work for NSAS exhibitions (See Photo).

Written on the back of the painting: Artist’s name, Title of work, Medium, Selling price

Attached firmly to the back of the painting, a string long enough to hang about halfway down the front of the painting with a tag detailing Artist’s name, Title of work, Medium, Selling price

Mark exactly halfway down each side of the painting to determine position of screws (supplied by NSAS) for hanging work on picture rail.

Optional: 2 flush D-rings and cord attached one third of the way down the back of the painting, or fixed firmly in a small envelope, making it easier for buyers to hang work when they get it home.

Maggy Johnston – Pataua Bay Art Residency

I flew to Whangarei with a suitcase of art supplies for a 4 week art residency at Pataua Bay South, full of trepidation and anticipation. The weeks raced past, and in the blink of an eye I was on my way back to Nelson!I decided to do this self-directed residency as I had two important exhibitions on the horizon and wanted to step away from my comfort zone and give my art practice a shot of adrenalin!!! The accommodation, a 1980’s bach, was settled on the edge of a gorgeous bay about 20kms from Whangarei – no chance of losing my focus in a stimulating and rather isolated environment. The time allowed me to complete some work that I took with me, and to experiment with, and develop (or curtail), some new ideas. Fitting in sea swims and beach walks, I worked long hours on my art, and formed relationships with some of the inquisitive locals!!This short, sharp residency allowed me to develop ideas and concepts with regular input and critique from the owner of the residency, Sally, who is herself, an artist and curator. Such residencies are an invaluable tool for artists living in smaller communities who are looking to gain traction in the NZ world of art.

TRAVELLING ARTIST
