Was the seventh and last State President of apartheid-era South Africa, serving from September 1989 to May 1994. De Klerk was also leader of the National Party (which later became the New National Party) from February 1989 to September 1997.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu

• In 1984 Archbishop Desmond Tutu was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his nonviolent work to end apartheid as well as to bring equality for the people in South Africa. In 1986 he became the first black person to be Archbishop in the Anglican Church of South Africa.

• Archbishop Tutu continues his role as a world leader in the struggle for human rights. He believes that all people are God’s children, and members of the same family
