Basic facts about Nelson Mandela• Born in 1918 during Apartheid– White and black people could not live in the same

place, eat together, sit on the same bus or be on the same sports team

Nelson Mandela’s Childhood• Nelson Mandela group up in a very rural

village called Qunu • However, although he came from a simple

background, he eventually became a lawyer who was strongly against apartheid

Mandiba in jail

• He was first arrested in 1956 for treason• Then, in the early 1960’s at the age of 46 he

was arrested and thrown in jail for life because of a deadly demonstration as well as a plot to overthrow the government

Jail time

• While in jail he became one of the most famous prisoners in the world

• He was still seen as a leader and changes began slowly happening

• Finally, he was freed in 1990!

From prisoner to president• Just a few years later in 1994, when black

people had the right to vote for the first time, Nelson Mandela won the presidency

• People were fearful but he decided he wanted to work to free the oppressed and the oppressor
