With the exception of the slide, this club house was built using reclaimed materials. Story on page 10.

28sandy’s hikeWinston Churchill encountered a bear.

10forts are funThis is one’s in a tree.

26dumpster diverWe think this bike graveyard’s pretty cool.

We plopped the boy down in the field for about an hour the other day because he hadn’t eaten dirt in a while. It was during this time Adam discovered a moth sitting on a lanky blade of grass that had somehow survived the bush hog. Angelo the cat saw it too, and instinctively sunk to the ground.

There’s a scene in Disney’s The Jungle Book where the little boy be-comes mesmerized by the psychedelic eyes of a snake. Out here we have moths with wings bearing patterns of your uncle’s ugly tie. Wings that flap open and shut, winking suggestively at curious little boys.

With a clumsy lunge, Adam reached for the moth only to lose it. Sorry, Angelo.

But the blade of grass didn’t go anywhere. If anything, it swayed back and forth in tandem with the breeze, slow enough for a little boy to get a hold of it. Adam tugged it and he tugged it hard.

The boy then realized the blade isn’t budging. He’ll learn about roots one day.

He will learn that the grass that he sees is only part of what’s there. If he was a bug, a tiny little bug living inside the Earth, he would see that a

single blade of grass is bound to the soil by roots that branch out. And if he were to tunnel straight through to the other side, he’d come up for air west of Australia in the great Indian Ocean. A tiny little bug floating in the water and the grasses there, they call seaweed.

On this end of the Earth, on the side with moths and cats, sits a little boy that many months ago was a bug, a tiny little bug, floating around his mother’s womb.

Tunneling through, the boy came up for air to join our world.

Happy 1st Birthday, Adam!Mom and Dad

Valley of ParadiseA group of weary wine tasters

returned to Virginia with blistered feet, yet several pounds lighter from (they later thanked me) trekking daily for hours across Paris. The pounds dropped off despite consumption of unusually large amounts of food and wine. And if I walked them into the ground, they drank me under the table. I was reprimanded only a few times, most notably for the excessive walking, but also for slipping into more chocolate shops than wine bars.

But Paris was paradise. August is a blessedly sleepy month in which the Parisians flock to the south. This year however, perhaps because of a struggling French economy, more Parisians were at home, more shops and restaurants open and, except for around the Eiffel Tower or the Louvre, Paris found far fewer tour-ists roaming her streets. We dined lakeside in the shade of gracious chestnut trees at La Chalet des Iles, and conducted wine tastings wher-ever we were. The most impressive tastings were at Lucien Legrand, Filles et Fils and Lavinia. But it was not only strolling the boulevards that

we found paradise. There was also a little wine who endeared herself to the group. I refer to a Vin de Pays (literally “country wine,” those wines which represent great value and are more expressive of place, “terroir” perhaps than any other) called Vallée du Paradis. Valley of Paradise. And the cost of this wine? 2.80 euros…pure paradis.

Yes, there does exist, in the south of France, a Vallée du Paradis, but maybe the real Valley of Paradise is that place where you find your-self (and if you’re really good you end up in that most magical of all places, Nelson County) surrounded by friends and family and good wine. That to me is what this wine symbol-ized: the beauty and warmth of Paris in late summer, our camaraderie and the quotidian wine of the locals: af-fordable and good. As the Europeans have always known, it’s not neces-sary to spend hundreds on a bottle of wine…or a great experience. Thus, while I have been unable to find in Virginia that exact little gem the group fell so hard for, I can suggest some equally well- priced wines:

St. Elias – From Chile, home to a

growing number of good affordable wines, St. Elia makes a varietally correct Cabernet Sauvignon with nice black currant aromas; a smooth and appley Chardonnay; a silken Syrah; and an outstanding and crisp Sauvi-gnon Blanc. And at $6.99 a bottle I think, with the current exchange rate, not to mention Visa transaction fees, we come out pretty close to 2.80 euros. Join the group in Italy sec-ond week of May 2010. Email Kay:[email protected]

The group poses next to the Lux-embourg Gardens before La Fon-taine des Quatre-Partie-du-Monde, otherwise known as the “Turtle fountain.”Absent are Kathy Pevey and Mary Hamilton, blogger and photographer.

For Stacey, the house hanging from thick chains among a cluster of four oaks is a work in progress that started in early 2007 as her father, Al, started claiming and reclaiming leftovers from the years of construction jobs he’s worked.

1 NELSON COUNTY LIFE OCTOBER 009

continued from page 10

Page 13: Nelson County Life, Issue #55

“It’s kind of like the thing these days, everybody wants a tree house,” Annelise said. Although, she had to lean on her dad in the last year to finish the job.

“She’s going to be out of the house soon and I don’t even have her tree house built,” Al Stacey, owner of Gaia Homes in Nellysford, remembers thinking.

On a recent tour of the house, the younger Sta-cey talked about the peace sign cut into the front door, her German Shepherd - the robust barking security system and frequent visitor - Murphy and converting the house into her personal library.

“I keep on stealing things from [my parents’] house,” Annelise said of furnishing the 7x7 space that is wrapped on three sides by porch. Although she’s had to return some house plants.

Throughout the tour, her brother Derek, 2, laid nearby, conched out on a sleeping bag.

In Massies Mill, there’ another similar story, where Larry Cabaniss has also done some mate-rial scavenging of his own and put together a tree house for his four kids, Skylar, Piper, Rylie and Montana: ages 3, 9, 10 and 13, respectively.

But in a way, the Cabanisses’ tree house is treeless because - outside of the recycled job site materials that were used to build it - it is freestand-ing up on a hill above their house.

But in the Cabanisses’ case, it’s all about loca-tion, location, location. Not to mention, it looks like a miniature version of a Southern summer cottage ... albeit one with a zip line that jumps off from the front porch into roughly a 200-foot run.

With it’s energy efficient windows and an exten-sion cord bringing power from the main house, the only thing Larry Cabaniss said he paid for was a slide that drops off the front porch.

“It’s a history of stuff,” Cabaniss, who owns Cabaniss Construction, said. “I hope when we’re done that it’s heated.” He’s also like to hook it up to solar panels.

“He had told me [the tree house] was really for him,” wife Nikki joked.

And maybe the best thing for any tree house is it never gets done, in a sense, said Annelise Stacey.

“When it’s built you kind of like building it more,” she said. NCL

The first phase of the Skate Nelson skate park at the Rockfish Valley Community Center has opened. The half pipe is to be followed up with “a multi-use plaza-style skate area, suitable for skating, plus other recreation that requires a hard, smooth surface like basketball, street hockey, biking, etc,” said Tim Gorman, the man behind Skate Nelson. To help raise money for Phase , Skate Nelson raffled off a pair of U concert tickets. Magnificent.

Raise your hand if you want to save money in this day and time. Would you prefer that you not have to sacri-fice anything for the savings? While it sounds too good to be true, modular home construction offers prospective home owners a non-traditional means of saving without sacrificing quality. Confusion between modular and man-ufactured homes has, in the past, kept some people from building modular. In many instances, prospective home purchasers simply don’t understand modular construction and how it rates to traditional building. If you are in the market for a new home, and have cost constraints, you may want to find out how modular construction stacks up to its traditional “stick-built” or “site built” counterpart. Here are a few modular facts for consideration:

Definition; modular homes are built in sections, called modules, in a factory assembly line. Once con-structed the sections are transported to the building site on truck beds and

then joined together on a foundation by local contractors. Once assembled, the modular typically cannot be dis-tinguished from a stick-built/site-built home. (A modular home should not be confused with a manufactured or mobile home, also known as a trailer, which is built on a steel frame and transported to the building site on its own wheels where it may or may not be placed on a permanent foundation.)

Quality; modular homes are often built with 20-30% more materials than a stick built home so that they can withstand transportation from the fac-tory to the building site. The modular factory system combines engineering know-how and factory production methods to design and build more efficiently with greater quality control which can result in a better product. Quality factors include: construction in a climate controlled facility with materials protected from the elements; standards that meet or exceed local and state building codes; rigorous

workforce and quality control sys-tems; and more…

Flexible Design Options; modular homes have been considered a one-size fits all approach allowing you to build only what is offered within a catalog; times have changed, as today’s modular homes can be cus-tomized and built to any specification, style, and size.

Speed of Construction; The aver-age completion time from the initial order to move-in is about 3 months, compared to an average completion time of about 6-12 months for a site-built home.

Cost of Construction; the estimat-ed savings is 5-25% over traditional site-built homes due to: Bulk Material Purchases - modular manufacturers purchase lumber and building materi-als in large quantities and thus receive volume discounts; Controlled Envi-ronment – building indoors, avoiding inclement weather results in greater labor efficiencies; Less Material Waste

– warehouses are easier to secure than job sites and result in less vandalism and theft; Manufacturing Technology and Quality Control – precision equip-ment, efficient material handling, and a closely supervised workforce, result in more accurate construction with fewer mistakes; Financing Costs – a quicker construction time results in fewer finance charges to the borrower.

Financing; lenders and banking institutions do NOT differentiate a modular home from a traditional stick-built or site-built home.

Anyone concerned with quality, time, and/or costs should explore modular home building. Contact your agent for a list of modular build-ers in your area.

SEPTEMBER 009 NELSON COUNTY LIFE 7

Years ago, when the Tour de Trump bicycle race passed through Nelson County, Dan Webster stood next to some Dumpsters along Virginia 6 and watched the action whoosh by.

“They were knuckle to knuckle,” Webster, 62, said of the cyclists. “They weren’t an inch apart.”

It was around the time that “Lance Armstrong started his dynasty,” Webster said, and it got the sculptor in him thinking about the grace of the riders as they flowed up, down and around the highway’s hills and curves.

But time passed and the former school teacher would often stop to drop off trash at the same Dumpsters. Until the day he spotted a landfill-bound bike that he threw it in the back of his truck.

From there, one bike led to another and then another, until roughly three years had passed and he basically had a compost pile of bikes mounded near a shed at his Nellysford home.

“It was just a huge eyesore,” he said of the pile.

And with neighbors whose son was getting mar-ried in the summer of 2007 on a nearby property, the bikes had to go.

It took a week, but eighty bikes and four scoot-ers brought the pile to life as a fence that rides several hundred feet alongside the road leading to Webster’s driveway. Slatted with men’s, women’s and children’s bikes, the fence rises and falls be-tween posts of varying heights like the wave of the de Trump riders that inspired it.

Not needing all the bikes for the fence, Webster has incorporated some of the leftovers into railings for a set of steps leading to his house, and has fused others into a rose trellis he built for his wife, Katie Dixon.

“He sees art in about everything,” said Dixon, who teaches 7th-grade math at Jackson P. Burley

Middle School in Charlottesville. “[The fence] puts a smile on my face.”

And it shines best at night, neighbors said.“I was never prepared for what it was going

to look like in the dark,” Jim “Fuzzy” Monnes, a neighbor who worked on the fence with Webster, said.

Echoing that is Steve Ambruzs - the neighbor whose son’s marriage lit the fence fire. At night, Ambruzs likes panning the bikes’ reflectors with the headlights of his car.

“It looks like an amusement park,” Ambruzs said. The fence reminds Monnes of a roller coaster.Regardless, the fence is responsible for its share

of rubbernecking.“When I moved here the only traffic I would

see was the mail carrier,” Webster said. But today, “[People] will pass it, and they’ll stop and back up.” NCL

OCTOBER 009 NELSON COUNTY LIFE 9

One day in late August, a long-time Trail Angel was waiting for a hiker alongside the Appalachian Trail as he often does. He reached for his cell phone to give her a call but – as is often the case near the trail – his phone wouldn’t work. A couple from Maryland had just exited the trail, though, and their phone seemed to be working just fine so they offered it to Bill. So he called the hiker he was waiting for but, alas, her phone wouldn’t work either. So he asked the couple if they, perhaps, had seen anybody on the trail.

“Yea, we saw a blond woman with a blue back-pack, maybe in her late thirties, coming through,” said the woman.

Bill thought, “Nah, that’s not Sandy, doesn’t sound like her.”

But just a little while later, Sandy Gallagher, Bill’s silver-haired 70-year-old wife walked off of the trail with her blue backpack.

Right before her 70th birthday, Sandy decided that as a gift to herself, she would walk through all of Shenandoah National Park. Once she told Bill and he was in full support of her decision, she real-ized there was no backing out so she began training right away. She went to the YMCA and worked treadmills, did a few practice hikes and then it was time to leave.

Her husband couldn’t join her on the hike, but he dropped her off in Front Royal August 18, met up with her several times along the trail and met her at the end of her journey 10 days later right here at Rockfish Gap.

Bill, along with Sandy’s brother and sister-in-law, waiting with Winston Churchill, the family dog as Sandy turned that last corner, nearly in tears.

“The last couple miles were some of the hardest, surprisingly so,” she said. “I think it was a real effort in both mental and physical stamina and so it feels good to finish, really finish.”

Sandy hiked most of the trail alone, but she and Bill decided it would be fun for Winston Churchill, lovingly called Winnie, to come along for one stretch. It just happened to be that night that a bear appeared on the trail.

“I was at a shelter and there were several guys there and they had jumped on the fireplace and said, “Woah, check out this bear!” Sandy recalled. “And it was one of the biggest bears any of us had ever seen.”

The bear eventually left the shelter area and Sandy and Winnie, who had set up their tent nearby, settled in for some rest.

“He slept on my mat and in my sleeping bag,”

said Sandy of her 30-pound pug. “I was just barely in the sleeping bag because he took over the whole darn thing.”

So after a little rest for Sandy and much more for Winnie, they woke up and Sandy started break-ing down the tent while Winnie played nearby.

“All the sudden I heard him bark and I saw him shoot for the woods and there comes this enor-mous bear and Winnie’s after it,” she said. “Well I screamed bloody murder, ‘WINNIE! GET BACK HERE!’”

“But Winnie’s still going and that bear saw me and maybe it was me with my loud mouth or maybe it was Winnie but he [the bear] high-tailed it back down the mountain.”

Sandy said her knees were shaking for fear of something happening to her poor little dog, but he thought he was a hero.

“That darn little dog thought he was going to save me from this big thing,” she said.

Between Winnie attacking a bear and Sandy suf-fering through four hours of torrential rain plus a lot of up and down hiking, it definitely wasn’t easy, but Sandy got through it and she knows exactly what’s next:

“A hot tub. And I gotta think of something good for my 80th.” NCL

There’s no shortage of fundraisers this time of year, but the Rockfish Valley Community Center is making strides to make its stand way out from the crowd.

After several years of pairing the eclectic silent auction with dinner and an evening of jazz, this year attendees of the annual event will be treated to a concert by nationally-known singer, songwriter and folk musician Jesse Winchester.

Winchester, who is best known for hits including “Yankee Lady” and “The Brand New Tennessee Waltz,” will be performing after a dinner catered by Claudia Gibson in a concert-setting at the November 7 event.

After a 3-course dinner and silent auction featuring items from The Treasure Chest, local businesses and individuals, Winchester will take the stage in support of the commu-

nity center’s increasing expenses. In addition to several renovation projects and keeping the building up to code, the RVCC is always working on new projects. Just this year, the organization has added a playground and the first stage of a community skate park to its facili-ties.

The RVCC is a vital part of the Nelson County community, said the nonprofit’s board of directors sec-retary Pat Gooch, and Winchester’s concert will definitely help to bring a little worthy attention to the com-munity center.

“I’m hoping it’ll be a draw for some new folks who will discover the community center for the first time because they’re Jesse Win-chester fans,” she said. “They’ll come down to our valley and dis-cover what a nice litter community center we have.” NCL

The Blue Ridge Interfaith Min-istry, a nonprofit organization that started at Mt. Woodland Baptist Church right here in Nelson, is here giving people second chances when they need it most. In the last seven years, BRIM has helped more than 2,000 people.

“Our goal is to help people who are really falling in the wayside,” said Kathy Harmon, the organiza-tion’s president.

Karen James, another member of BRIM, explained that the organiza-tion is basically an emergency stop-gap that was created to help people who need one-time, short-term, immediate assistance.

Over the years, BRIM has strug-

gled with raising enough money to help all the people who ask for help. They’ve held bake sales and worked in the concessions stands at UVa football games – neither of which proved very fruitful. But one event that’s been consistently successful is the fall pancake breakfast held an-nually at the Rockfish Presbyterian Church in Nellysford (this year’s is October 17 from 8 to 11 a.m.).

Then, three years ago, BRIM decided to hold a golf tournament. As a whole, the group didn’t know much about golfing so that’s how they met Michael Mische, who is now BRIM’s director of development. When he found out the nonprofit was looking for creative new ways to raise money

The S Curve

For paths and eventual landscape plantings, few elementary designs work as well as the S-Curve. The reasons are as simple as the shape – a large S that has been pulled on both ends of the letter to expose a larger transition area between each curve allows for unique groupings of plants and hints of hidden elements whereas the visitor that traces this shape can only see one portion, at best, of the design at a time when landscaped properly. The resulting walk or path creates anticipation and a relaxing aurora as you move into, through and out of the path.

One way that the S-curve path works is if you imagine two ‘cul-de-sacs’ or circles of grass that terminate with 15 feet of each other and are separated by a landscape bed. To connect these two ‘cul-de-sacs’ take a garden hose and lay it straight from where you are to where you want to go. Once the hose is laid where you want it, note where the halfway point is on the hose and move backward (or forward) to the ¼ point. At this ¼ point on the hose now bend the hose in a nice flowing arc either toward you or away from you and then do the opposite on the other side at the ¾ point on the hose. When you are done you will have to improve the arc so that your S-Curve has a nice flow to it – no hard turns, no straight lines.

So that you can easily follow this layout, let’s say that the S-Curve is laid out north to south in a backward S. Landscaping the S-Curve involves 3 focal points - at the beginning, the end and on one of the curves. This is to allow those that walk the curve have something to grab their atten-tion before they get on, just before they get off and on one of the curves.

For this design, let’s say it is a birdbath and will go at the beginning of the S-Curve at the ¼ point on the right side of the backward S (inside of the curve) and two stone pine-apples at the beginning and end – one in front of the evergreens (see below) and the other on the opposite side at the very end. On the right side, from start to finish, choose a short ever-green to give the entire curve a strong line (kind of like eyeliner) – let’s use a Justin Brouwer’s Boxwood (2 feet by 2 feet). On the opposite curve, again inside, at the ¾ point get a short tree like a Crape Myrtle. Three of the evergreens should seat nicely around the trunk of the tree and flow with the curve.

On the same side as the birdbath, add 3 flowering shrubs (no more than 4-5 feet in mature size) in a V-pattern that mock the curve – for this design lets use Rhododendron PJM. These 3 plants will go on the outside of the ¾ point curve, opposite the tree with plenty of real estate between them and the walk so that you can add color in front. Everywhere you landscape, try to keep a layered ap-proach to the design (short in front with taller plants behind).

Add color, both annuals, perenni-als and bulbs sprinkled in around the birdbath and evergreens for contrast and color. Try not to skimp on color – use 5 to 7 (or more) of each and place them in zig-zag patterns amongst the evergreens and around the base of the birdbath. Keep in mind the height of the birdbath and plant taller perennials at its base to give your design a more 3D look to it. Try not to install a kaleidoscope of color but instead concentrate on 3 colors and use them generously around the area.

Until our next article,Happy Gardening!

“I’ve fallen and I can’t get up!”

Most of us have seen the old TV commercial with the elderly lady on the floor, who says, “I’ve fallen and I can’t get up!” From it came many funny T shirts and jokes. Getting up from the floor is a functional task that incorporates many things such as upper and lower body strength, motor planning, lower body flexibil-ity and coordination. In fitness and physical therapy, this activity has become a regular test of function for our clients due to the high incidence of falls in our country. It can be a good home test of your function regardless of your age.

When we are toddlers and kids, we did a lot of crawling on the floor and spent a lot of time playing on our hands and knees. We did these activities without thinking. Well into our adulthood and senior years, individuals forget how to crawl and get on all fours – as it is not a com-mon activity.

One of the fears of individuals

who have balance deficits and a fear of falling, is the inability to get back up from a fall. How do we move from lying face down to standing? It may be easy for some but as a test- go ahead and try it at home. If you have difficulty moving into a hands and knees position, then to a half kneeling position and then to stand-ing, you may have areas to work on. There may be hip and knee flexibil-ity restrictions and leg weakness. If you have arthritis in your hips and knees, it is even more challenging.

Other functional tests that you can try at home are: 1) Start in sitting and rise to a standing position with-out using your arms and 2) Perform a pushup. If you can’t do these tests, it indicates weakness and it is time to seek consultation to begin a fit-ness program.

Unfortunately, there is a not a magic pill to take that just gives you the strength of a 20 year old! It takes 2-3 days a week for 30 minutes and a certain dedication. Consider the benefits- you are worth it!

Dear Dr. Steve,I think I have an ingrown toenail.

What can I do about it?

Oh that is no fun. You never know how much you appreciate walking on normal toes until one starts to hurt! An ingrown toenail is simply a nail that has grown into the skin that is supposed to be be-side it. Often times that skin then gets swollen, red, painful, and even infected. It usually happens when a toenail is cut too short, or cut rounded off at the corners, if shoes are too tight around the toes, or if there has been a trauma to the toe.

If you see this starting to happen, you can begin soaking the affected toe several times per day, and try to manually peal the skin back off of the nail after the soaks. If you can gently expose the corner of the nail, placing a few strands from a cotton ball under that corner can help it stay out from under the skin. I would advise you not to use any tools to try to “dig out the nail” as often I see more harm than good done when people try this.

If your skin starts to get red, painful, swollen, and begins to drain pus and blood, then you probably should see your doctor. Sometimes antibiotics are needed. Often, a minor surgery that can be done in the office can help a lot. The doctor can numb the toe and remove part of or the entire nail.

While we do have ways of help-ing this problem, as with most medical things avoiding it in the first place is really your best bet. Don’t wear shoes that are tight around your toes. Don’t cut your toe nails too short and be sure to cut them straight across the top. If a problem starts, address it quickly. And, if you have read this far, and don’t have ingrown nails, be thank-ful for your healthy feet!

for local people in need, he had lots of ideas to share.

Since he’s joined, BRIM has held several gospel concerts, including a very successful concert featuring the Howard Family, sold a coupon book full of local deals and even hosted a TigerLily fundraising concert using a performance by the band that he and his wife won and this year’s Animal House Ball.

And now, with his help, funds raised at the golf tournament rep-resent about 30 percent of BRIM’s income each year.

In addition to all the fundrais-ing they do, Michael is helping the group get grants. BRIM has already been awarded a $2,000 grant from the Nelson County Community

Foundation to start the BRIM Fuel Fund that will help people make it through another winter of high fuel costs.

“And when we say the fuel fund, anything that facilitates pro-viding electricity or energy to the household counts,” said Michael. “We reserve the right to buy wood if have to or … spend $200 to fi x the fl ue.”

“I really enjoy working with the people that I have in the organiza-tion,” said Kathy about her fellow fundraisers. But she says BRIM is really around for the community. “I enjoy helping people.”

As Karen put it, “We just all get together and say, ‘Yes, we want to help.” NCL
