School Holidays have come and gone again. For some the time flew by but for others with under 10 year olds at home and with nothing to do school starting back couldn't have come faster enough.

I had a children's ministry commitment at CYC Waihola just south of Dunedin in the second week of the holidays which took me away from the Cathedral and meant in practical terms that I needed to be packed up to leave Nelson on Thursday of the first week of the break to be ready to go by Sunday at Waihola.

I'm grateful to the Lord for the very capable assistant leaders that He has provided, (Joy Shackelton & Marion Malcolm, both faithful Cathedral girls from their youth) for our Children's Church who took over for me in my absence and took the children that didn't take the holidays off from church through activity sheets, Bible stories on DVD and other cool stuff. Thanks again ladies.

I picked up the reins again on Sunday the 26th of July and had the pleasure of hosting our CFM worker Sue Fallow at our first programme back from the holidays. We are continuing on with the Life in the Spirit theme and are trying to shadow the characters that Dean Mike is speaking from each week.

My hope is as we view these champions of the faith we pull out from their life stories their "successful spirit lead decisions” and their "law of sin and death choices" so that we may learn and seek and allow God's enabling to do His will, and not default to immaturity. Blessings

Hello Cathedralites,

Are we half way through Winter? I hope so. I also hope you are keeping active

and connected. The Cathedral Walkers have been setting of from the Cathedral

every Tuesday at 9am. Bring a friend and join us. The Craft group are meeting

every Wednesday afternoon at 2pm to recycle cards into Memory Tree decorations

for the Christmas Tree Festival. We are making good progress as well as lots of

chat and afternoon tea.

We had a lovely Devonshire Tea at Cameo on 3 July

and we were royally entertained by Ruth Williams on

the electric piano. Her instrument of choice is the

Grand but the air was a little chilly in the nave.

Thank you to Sally, Judith G, Ruby and Joc for

champion scones. Join us for the next Cameo on

7 August at 2.30pm in the Quiet Room.

If it’s too cold outside for you maybe this is a good

time to sit in a warm spot and think about preparing an Advance Care Plan. It’s

never too early to start one but it could be too late. Have you thought about what

matters most for your future care?

Advance Care Plans are encouraged and supported by The Royal NZ College of Gen-eral Practitioners. They can be filled out by anyone at any stage of your life. E.g. New house, new baby, new job, or a shift in career. They are especially valuable when fac-ing a time in your life when you are not able to speak for yourself, to let those that are dearest to you, know your wishes for your care. Step 1 is Think about it. What gives your life meaning? What is important to you? Are there types of treatment or care you would or would not want? Who would make decisions on your behalf? Do you have an enduring power of attorney? Step 2 is Talk about it. Who would it be good to share your thoughts with? Your family/whanau/friends? Your GP, practice nurse, specialist, health care team? Your spiritual advisor? Your enduring power of attorney? Step 3 is Write it down. This is where I can help with Plans, information and advice so that you can take a Plan to your Doctor and have it registered with the Hospital. Pick up an information leaflet from the Parish Nurse Notice board (next to the Quiet Room) or contact me directly on 0273 198 511 or [email protected]

of the Alcoholics Anonymous Board encouraging the freer availability of alcohol! And I cannot understand how come, that while billions of dollars are spent on planting pine trees, keeping greyhound racing going, a slide costing half a million dollars in Parliament grounds and spending $300.00 a night at a hotel for those who are isolating, at the same time we have peo-ple with mental health issues not being able to access Nikau House in the future if it is going to be closed down. Here at the Cathedral Steps we have gathered together to encourage those who have enjoyed and need the Nikau House facili-ties to speak up for its survival. I reckon there are more people walking around with fractured minds and fractured spirits than with fractured legs and arms, yet the services at our hospitals are guaranteed to address the physical brokenness. However I am not so sure about the psychological brokenness that needs to be addressed through such services as Nikau House.

During all of this time when it is natural for any of us to call on God that option is minimised. My eldest daughter Elizabeth teaches Bible in Schools but is not allowed to do it in school time. It must be after school, when the school itself is closed. God is being side-lined in New Zealand.

Proverbs 1 v 7: To have knowledge, you must first have reverence for the Lord but fools despise wisdom and instruction. Again from scripture: Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord (Psalm 33:12). C.S. Lewis said, and I quote: “You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon or you can fall at his feet and call him my Lord and my God”.* James A. Francis is another author who wrote: “God is the centrepiece of the human race and the leader of the column of progress. I am far within the mark when I say that all the armies that ever marched or the navies that ever sailed and all the parliaments that ever sat and all the kings that ever reigned together have not affected the life on earth as powerfully as that one solitary life.“

Getting back to God would be a great start to sorting out our muddle.

All eyes on Ruth as she entertains at the July

Cameo gathering.

Ruth Williams a faithful attender at the Cathedral and Cameo, entertains at our first Cameo session since Lockdown. She will celebrate her 90th birthday in several months.

Hi tea with scones, jam n’ cream. Yum. We shared memories on WINTER; at school, at home, at church and on holiday Sue said that at high school lunchtime would see the girls toasting their sandwiches on the wall

Happy 100th Birthday!

This month sees us celebrate our Cathedral beginnings. The Nelson Narrative , an historical record of

our Diocese records the first structure was a tent opened in August 1842. Clearly no earthquake

strengthening issues there.

A temporary building was opened on Church Hill in January 1843. A second church December 1851

was enlarged in 1859.

An early publication records that New Years Day 1842 had been

celebrated by the first game of cricket played in Nelson. The arti-

cle refers to there being “boat and canoe races, fencing, cutlass

practice, musket drill , foot races and dancing to the music of

fife, fiddle and drum. The NZ Company’s officers, surveyors

seamen and Maori all joined with kindly good will and hearty

good humour in the amusements of the day.”

The first “Cathedral “ was opened by the Primate, Bishop

Harper ,in February 1887. The Narrative records this opening

was” amidst great rejoicing” and goes on to record a fair in March 1887 which had its “poultry show ,

its maypole dance, its fireworks ,its doll show ,its flower show and a tent full of the most delicate sci-

entific models and machinery”

Needless to say the church services in the early settler years were well attended.

Times have changed but those early settlers celebrated and gave thanks in play and prayer for the good

things they saw in their new settlement despite all their difficulties.

The Wardens hope that same spirit of acknowledging our Creator for all for which we should be grate-

ful will be alive in our community as we face the commitment to fund the earthquake strengthening

now required for our

Cathedral .
