...

Dew is a yin qi fluid. Its qi moistens and brings luster to the side passages. Its qi and flavor are sweet and balanced - it lacks toxicity.

Usage: collect in a bowl at the flourishing of the autumn dew. Simmered with malt sugar, it promotes longevity. It absorbs dangerous killing qi and is used in medicinals that moisten the lungs to treat plaguing illnesses. It regulates worms that cause skin sores and treats leprosy. Taken from the tips of medicinal herbs during the wei hour of the day it cures the one hundred diseases. It treats xiaoke disease (type I diabetes) and lightens the body. It reverses (feelings of) starvation and causes the flesh to become plump and lustrous...

Luo mai network vessels

Are often visible

Do not cross joints

May become distended with blood when diseased

May be deficient

May be treated with bleeding or with food therapy and medicinal decoctions

Luo mai network vessels

Flow laterally across the body

Join with the ear

Join with the great luo of the pancreas

Have a yin yang relationship with jing mai rivers

Can be diagnosed by color and location

the apex beat (lat. ictus cordis), also called the point of maximum impulse (PMI), is the furthermost point outwards (laterally) and downwards (inferiorly) from the sternum at which the cardiac impulse can be felt. the cardiac impulse is the result of the heart rotating, moving forward and striking against the chest wall during systole. it is also known as the "apical impulse.

2005-2016 EDWARD NEAL, MD

lateral and/or inferior displacement of the apex beat usually indicates enlargement of the heart, called cardiomegaly.

sometimes, the apex beat may not be palpable, either due to a thick chest wall, or conditions where the stroke volume is reduced; such as during ventricular tachycardia or shock.

the character of the apex beat may provide vital diagnostic clues. a forceful impulse indicates pressure overload in the heart (as might occur in hypertension).

2005-2016 EDWARD NEAL, MD

an uncoordinated (dyskinetic) apex beat involving a larger area than normal indicates ventricular dysfunction; such as an aneurysm following myocardial infarction.

Question time

2005-2016 EDWARD NEAL, MD

Matthew Prouty December 5 at 12:57pm Ed, I have a question regarding the concept of Qi. From lectures on space time theory, I understand qi as the signature of space and time created by the dynamic breath of yin and yang - the breath of the universe. In this weeks lectures, you referenced passages describing each Jing Mai in terms of amounts of qi and blood contained within each system. When you read a passage such as this, what comes to your mind in terms of defining Qi in this context? My mind has moved away from thinking of channels carrying "qi" as we studied in TCM school, but clearly this aspect of each Jing Mai is important. Thanks.

Adriano Taricani Yesterday at 9:34am Ed, question regarding last weeks lecture. Lower yangming branches 43:26 on the video, branch 4 ends on the inner aspect of the second toe and the 5th branch ends on the outer aspect of the second toe. But at 51:15 the arrows show this on the 3rd toe, suggesting the stomach mai covers the 3rd, 2nd toes and lateral aspect of big toe? thx

2005-2016 EDWARD NEAL, MD

Lower yangming stomach mai river - 6 branches

First branch - bridge of nose, upper teeth, great welcoming (daying), jaw axle (jiache) , guests host (kezhuren), forehead

Second branch - great welcoming (daying), human welcoming (renying), open basin (quepen), stomach, pancreas

Third branch - open basin (quepen), breast, umbilicus, qi ravine (qijie)

2005-2016 EDWARD NEAL, MD

Lower yangming stomach mai river - 6 branches

Fourth branch - stomach, internal abdomen, qi ravine (qijie)

Main branch - thigh pass (biguan), crouching rabbit (futu), knee, shin, top of foot, inner aspect middle toe

Fifth branch - divides three cun down shin, lateral shin, outer aspect middle toe

Sixth branch - top of foot, space between first and second toes, tip big toe

2005-2016 EDWARD NEAL, MD

LS10. qzhzhq ywi kuxixnflxi zhqjizhng a (fourth) branch arises from weikou (stomach mouth) and descends to follow the inner abdomen and arrive at qijie (qi ravine)

LS10. r h y xi b gun d f t there it joins with (the external branch) and together they descend across biguan (thigh pass) and arrive at futu (crouching rabbit)

LS10. xixbnzhng it descends through the knee

2005-2016 EDWARD NEAL, MD

LS10. xixnjngwilinxizfrzhng zhnijin and passes lateral to the shin to arrive at the top of the foot where it enters the inner (aspect) of the middle toe

LS10. qzhzhxilinsncnrbixirzhng zhwijin a (fifth) branch divides three cun (below the knee) and passes along the (shin) to enter the lateral (aspect) of the middle toe

LS10. qzhzhbifshngrdzhjinchqdun a (six) branch divides from the top of the foot and passes between the first and second toe to exit at the tip (of the big toe)
