Connecting neighbours and communities After two months in the role of co-ordinator of Neighbourhood Support Nelson I’m impressed by the enthusiasm of the street contacts who keep our 400 Neighbourhood Support groups ticking along. Many of the contacts have already been in touch with me to say hi, tell me about activities they’ve got planned, or let me know about updates to their group’s contact list. I’ve really appreciated the messages of welcome, so thanks very much!

Let me tell you a bit about myself. I previously worked as the communications and team support co-ordinator for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Nelson, and before that was a public relations contractor and journalist. I’ve lived in Nelson for more than 20 years and think it’s a fantastic place to live.

I’m excited about this role and the vision to grow the Neighbourhood Support network in Nelson. I believe that encouraging neighbours to connect with each other helps build friendlier neighbourhoods and more vibrant communities. The end result is that Nelson becomes a nicer place to live in.

Ready for any emergency

A Neighbourhood Support group in The

Wood is well prepared for any natural

disasters or emergencies that might

occur.

The group in Tasman St has developed

an emergency plan which includes a list

of useful equipment such as ladders

and tools, and a map enabling them to

see where people’s power, gas and

water mains are should they need to be

turned off.

Get Ready Week 21 – 27 September

What Would You Do?

If a disaster happened right now, what would you do? Would you be ready? Get Ready Week is a time for you to start thinking. Time to talk to your family, friends, and neighbours about putting together a plan of ‘what would you do’. In your next team meeting at work, or when you have your family at home, start talking about it. There are many things to think about when planning, but taking small bites at it will help. This will make you feel more prepared within yourself for when a real event happens. Talking it through on a regular basis will also stop it being a scary topic and everyone will be less stressed in the time of need. Here are some scenarios:

A day at the beach, an earthquake just knocked me off my feet … what would you do?

A huge earthquake just hit — stay inside or get out fast? What would you do?

Volcanic ash is on the way … what would you do?

A severe storm is on the way … what would you do?

My home is going to be flooded … what would you do?

Transport disrupted after a major earthquake or flood event … what would you do if you can’t get home tonight?”

Water/power/phones down… what would you do without water/power/phones for the next three days?

For more information come and see us at the Nelson Ecofest, Founders Park, on 16 November.

Keep safe and prepared

Ready for any emergency

Continued from page 1

Group co-ordinator, Jane Bealing,

says they were prompted to develop

the plan after media coverage of

earthquakes and tsunamis got them

thinking about how they would cope

if an emergency occurred. They

called a meeting and made a list of

the kind of information that would be

useful in an emergency, such as what

equipment and skills people had, and

where services were located.

They then set about gathering the

information, and Jane obtained a map

of the street’s properties from the

Nelson City Council on which she

could pinpoint the water, gas and

power mains.

Jane says the project was well

supported, and included people who

weren’t in the Neighbourhood

Support group. They found it a useful

exercise and it has given them some

peace of mind to know they’re well

prepared.

``I think it would be a useful exercise

for other Neighbourhood Support

groups to do as well,’’ she says.

Jane’s husband John says the

information gathered has already

come in handy, as he was able to ask

a neighbour with a nursing

background to bandage his finger

when it was crushed between two

rocks.

Beware on guard against scammers

With the rapid acceleration in technology, opportunities have arisen

for criminals throughout the world to devise schemes and scams to

fraudulently access accounts and savings of vulnerable victims. More

often than not, these victims are the ones least able to afford the loss

of their financial assets.

Recently, a friend was contacted by a person who introduced himself

as a computer software repair person, saying he had detected a

problem in his personal computer. The caller was described as

convincing and as the call went on, he became more demanding of

personal information.

When he was asked for some form of identification or for his

supervisor, he hung up. There is no doubt that this was an attempt to

gain information such as passwords or account details. If you get a

telephone call or letter requesting any personal information, you

should automatically become suspicious. Under no circumstances

should P.I.N numbers be given out to anyone.

I have decided to highlight this problem as I have recently had contact

with a superannuitant who was conned out of their retirement savings

involving many thousands of dollars by an international scam. This has

seriously affected that person's quality of life. Because the crime was

committed offshore in a country with no agreements with New

Zealand, the chances of recovering lost savings is virtually nil.

If you wish to find out more about scams, or want to report an attempt

at a scam, visit the Ministry of Consumer Affairs website,

www.scamwatch.govt.nz

Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
