Eggs Benedict (traditionally consisting of two halves of an English mu n, topped with

poached eggs, bacon or ham, and hollandaise sauce) is being enjoyed by diners at Pretoria restaurants, whether served the original way or with a modern twist. If you want salmon instead of ham, bread instead of mu ns, cheese instead of sauce, or added ingredients such as paprika, eggs Benedict has become the breakfast staple to suit many a taste.

Renette Vosloo, celebrity chef featuring on Ontbytsake, says eggs Benedict is the ultimate treat as the combination of hollandaise sauce and eggs is unbeatable and the dish is perfect for any celebratory breakfast with a good Méthode Cap Classique, of course.

She says the secret to making a great eggs Benedict is excellent hollandaise sauce with an e ectué poached egg. She says the dish is always a challenge to make but it is pure bliss to see people enjoy an authentic, well-executed classic.

There are a number of stories regarding the origin of the eggs Benedict. One of

Cheers!

the most popular is that the dish fi rst became renowned in the The New Yorker magazine in 1942 when Lemuel Benedict, a Wall Street stock broker, told the story of how he ordered buttered toast, poached eggs, bacon and hollandaise sauce at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel to ease his hangover. Oscar Tschirky, the maître d’hôtel, swapped the toast for halved English mu ns and changed the bacon to ham, and the eggs Benedict was born.

Various versions of this dish include eggs Royale which substitutes salmon for the ham, eggs Florentine which substitutes spinach for ham, or eggs Blackstone which substitutes ham for bacon and adds a tomato slice.

Another account includes Mrs LeGrand Benedict, a regular patron at Delmonico’s Restaurant, the fi rst restaurant or public dining room opened in the US in the 1860s, who found nothing to her liking on the menu and wanted something new for lunch and discussed it with Chef Charles Ranhofer. He came up with the eggs Benedict for her which is published in his cookbook The Epicurean as eggs à la Benedick.

Most schools reopened this past week and we’re already halfway into January. While part of me

would still like the holiday dreaminess to linger, it’s really time to get going. The beauty of coming back after a break is that there’s really more clarity and possibility to everything. You can literally decide what you want to value this year. I think I’m going to be more in favour of my home and perhaps dabble in some

DIY. I’ve already started a garden project, but we’ll see how that goes. As for the Neighbourhood team the focus will be on celebrating people, places, and property. May your 2016 be memorable.

Liewe HeksieMost of us remember and love the forgetful and endearing character that is Liewe Heksie. When creating these beautiful little stories,

the late Verna Vels not only contributed to Afrikaans literature but she helped build on childhood memories. Before her passing, Vels wrote one last story for Lefra Productions. In this theatre production titled Liewe Heksie en die Tuindwergie, Heksie meets Casper, the garden gnome. Treat your kids to the wonderful imagination of Verna Vels and watch along as Heksie not only meets Casper, but also Karring, Blommeland’s milk gnome, and Botterblom, the lonely cow who produces milk for the whole of Blommeland. Join in on 23 January at the Atterbury Theatre.

Staying authenticEveryone enjoys being romanced with stories of the products’ origin, the ingredients and inspirational stories of creative entrepreneurs chasing their dreams. Co ee roasters with single-origin beans, handcrafted options, and a return to old classics, is in order.

Here are the top eight drink trends to keep your eye on this year

We have a look at what is trending and what seems to be standing the test of

time in the world of drinks. Not only is the drinks world buzzing with a wide variety of fl avours and options, brands are becoming more accessible and connecting with their customers. Know your way around the drinks menu and have a look at what to expect in 2016. Tiny treasuresThere was an increase in small breweries and distilleries last year and it seems like the trend is bound to continue this year. Everyone is taking full advantage of local start-ups and small-production businesses in their area. Small-batch brewers and distillers o er unique limited-run batches and the care taken with each batch wins over numerous hearts.

True storiesWho doesn’t like a good coming-of-age story? Brands are sharing their own coming-of-age stories. Small-batch businesses are involving their consumers in crowd-funding initiatives,

as Prosecco will be on everybody’s lips. As an emerging varietal in South Africa, Italian bubbly might just be great company for your company.

Artisan allureCraft beer is not going anywhere soon – new brewers are emerging ever so often and consumers are enjoying the variety of beers available. A few more beverages have hopped onto the craft train. Numerous ciders, gin and vodka makers have joined in the fun.

Spicy botanicalsInnovative, complex fl avours in whisky, tequilas, cognac and liqueurs have most moving away from sweet tastes to more complex, nuanced fl avours, which include spicy, botanical, herbal, or even bitter fl avours.

Soft serveDo you enjoy swirling your beautifully crafted cocktail, but don’t like the idea of hard liquor? An interesting new shift in mixology excludes hard liquors and opts for a fl urry of wine and cider-based cocktails.

Desiree JeareyFOUNDER OF DESRAY LABEL

H aving started out on Greenmarket Square in 1991, Desiree Jearey has built up the

Desray label from an entrepreneurial, single-stall clothing business at Greenmarket Square into a fast-expanding retail chain. After a 10-year tenure as one of the Young Designers Emporium’s leading designers, Desiree chose to branch out on her own and today has eleven dedicated Desray stores around the country. Desray creates ready-to-wear clothes designed to flatter the female body, with a great range of sizes (30-42). A new branch recently opened in Brooklyn Mall.

Q: How did your business start?A: My mother has been in fashion

her whole life, so it was natural for me to go the same route. I did this by starting with a single store at Greenmarket Square in 1991.

Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop?

A: As a Cape Town-based business, we always knew that our brand and product would do well in the Gauteng area. After opening in Parkhurst in 2014, we quickly saw the potential of this region. Of all the centres we visited in Pretoria, Brooklyn Mall had the best fit for our look and feel, as well as our brand.

Q: How did you find your premises?A: We first approached Brooklyn Mall

in the early part of 2014 and knew it was only a matter of time before the ideal store location came about.

Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business?

A: We feel Brooklyn Mall is a trendy hub in Pretoria and our specific store location faces the popular

Design Square in Brooklyn, with all its trendy restaurants.

Q: Who are your neighbours?A: Our store is easily found opposite

Tribeca and Exclusive Books.

Q: What are the shop rental prices like in this area?

A: The rental in Brooklyn Mall is higher than any of our nine other stores. However, the trading density and monthly foot traffic make up for this increased rental.

Q: What is your shop footprint?A: Desray Brooklyn Mall will see

between 50 and 70 people a day.

Q: Do you have any expansion plans?A: After recently adding three new

stores to the group, we are not likely to be expanding in the near future. That said, if a great location comes about, we would consider it.

Q: Do you operate online as well?A: We had a small online operation

a few years ago, but with rapid expansion we had to focus our attention on that. We are excited about rolling out online by March this year.

Q: What’s your most popular item? A: Our easy-to-wear day dresses are

probably our bestsellers, but it varies from season to season. We like to keep abreast of international trends and incorporate that into our classic styles.

Why January is a bad time for landlords

Bridge City takes shape

How the market has changed… according to Monopoly

In a recent analysis conducted by TPN Credit Bureau, data shows that rental payment collections

in South Africa usually decline by about 12,5% in January each year.

This decline only takes into account the behaviour analytics of tenants who pay late, not even those who partially pay or default on their payment entirely.

According to Michelle Dickens, managing director, TPN, it could be argued that the public holiday on 1 January contributes to the average day that rent is paid being stretched to 8 or 9 January when, for the remainder of the year, rent is

D evelopment at Bridge City, north of Durban, is gathering momentum

with the precinct emerging as a key investment location and a strategic regional precinct and transport hub.

Brian Ive, development executive, Tongaat Hulett Developments, says that a number of sales have been concluded recently and that construction of two of these developments is beginning during the first quarter of this year.

So far, half of the sites within the Bridge City Town Centre have been sold and there are now four sites available in the 17ha Bridge City Business Estate.Bridge City is being developed as the second leg of the Effingham

T he original South African Monopoly board (released in 1963) focused on four

of South Africa’s biggest cities: Johannesburg (which saw the highest property values on the board), Cape Town, Bloemfontein and Durban.

The most expensive real estate was Eloff Street at R400. Cape Town properties were in second place, with Long, Plein and Parliament streets as the prime pickings. An investment in Musgrave Road would have been an excellent one as it is by far the most expensive street in Durban from the original board, and is now nearly four times as valuable as Gillespie Street. The 2002 edition underwent a

Interestingly enough, there is no such increase over the Easter holidays or any other month with significant public holidays. This phenomenon is unique only to January.”

Dickens continues, “Tenants who display the classic festive season syndrome are not malicious in nature, but are simply caught in a continuation of their holiday payment behaviour before reality sets in and they return to their better selves and better payment behaviour.”

While the second is primarily industrial with a single hospital, Bridge City, however, is a mixed-use development that will provide for light industrial use as well as accommodate medical, commercial, retail and residential elements.

makeover – streets in Durban, Bloemfontein, Cape Town, and Joburg were replaced with cities, neighbourhoods and landmarks. Property in Clifton, the prime property suburb on the board, would set you back R40,000.

Fast forward to 2015 and Clifton is still the suburb with the highest property values. The median price for a property in Nettleton Road is R41m. That’s over 1,000 times the price of a Clifton property on the 2002 Monopoly board. The top Durban street to own property in is Hickory Road, in the Hawaan Forest suburb, where property will set you back about R9m.

Pretoria properties in suburbs neighbouring commercial developments and older houses on large properties are set to be in demand

T he Pretoria property market is expected to experience stock shortages, increased demand

due to new developments, and growth in line with inflation of around 5% this year. Gerhard van der Linde, managing director, Seeff Pretoria East, says home prices increased between 5% and 7% last year and there’s an increasing demand by an emerging middle-class market for properties between R800,000 and R 1,2m.

“Development highlights include Menlyn Maine, progress on the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, and redevelopment of established suburbs such as Menlo Park and Hatfield due to the Gautrain and BRT system. In Pretoria North, prices increased by about 2% and are expected to grow, with many developments planned in a 15km radius from the city centre in 2016. In Centurion, selling prices increased by about 5% and should increase by about 6% to 8% each year over the next two years,” says Van der Linde.

Bertie Lombard, franchisee, Rawson Properties Waterkloof and Faerie Glen, says there’s a great deal of movement in the market and correctly priced properties will continue to sell this year. He says estates and boomed-off areas will become more popular with families and investors, while new residential units, offices

and restaurants built in Hatfield Square will be popular with investors and parents buying for children.

“More small developments for students and young working executives will happen in Brooklyn, Menlo Park and Lynnwood. Faerie Glen and Boardwalk Villa will face a stock shortage due to demand of sectional title units up to R800,000. In Faerie Glen, development of Olympus Village shopping centre with Burger King and Checkers, will be completed, while in Olympus several sectional title and estate developments will occur in 2016,” Lombard says.

Deon van Zyl, franchise development manager, Leapfrog Property Group Centurion, says the market is expected to grow in volume but not price this year, with any growth no higher than 5% to 6%. He says there will be pressure on selling prices, particularly in the upper market where an increase in stock and a decrease in buyers are expected this year. “There has been an increase in high-density developments with units in the R500,000 to R1,5m price range built, and there is a demand for older houses on big properties close to the university to be redeveloped into cluster houses. Developers are scaling down on office parks as office blocks stand empty for longer periods and return on investment is not as good as it used to be,” says Van Zyl.

There’s no trick to investing

M any people are intimidated by the idea of investing their hard-earned money. In many

ways the financial services industry has perpetuated this by making it seem like investing is a mysterious art that can only be successfully performed by the most astute professionals.

Thankfully this idea is beginning to erode. The truth is that while successful investing certainly isn’t easy, it can be simple. Investors just need to keep a few basic principles in mind:

The sooner you start the betterThe greatest gift any investor can give themselves is time. The longer your money is able to work for you, the greater the benefit.

This is very simply illustrated by an example of someone who invests R500 every month. If they are able to earn a 10% return on that money, in 10 years it will grow into just over R100,000, in 20 years R380,000, in 30 years R1,14m and in 40 years R3,19m.

The wonder of compounding means that the longer the money remains untouched, the faster it will grow because you will start earning interest on top of interest.

DiversifyMany investors make the mistake of chasing the “next big thing”. They are always trying to anticipate where their money will grow fastest and keep moving it into different funds or assets.

However, this is a strategy that is almost always destined to fail. Not only because it is impossible to predict the markets, but also because it is based on always having all your money in one place.

The best investment strategy involves putting your money into a selection of different funds and asset classes so that you have many different sources of return. If one underperforms for a while, you don’t need to worry because you will be getting outperformance from somewhere else.

Stick to your planBecause investing is always about your long-term future, it’s easy to be distracted by short-term issues. People see markets dropping or hear about economic problems and think that they need to do something to protect their money.

However, if you started off with the right investment plan, you should have very little need to change it. What happens over one day or a week or even a few years is not that important. What matters is the full life of your investment over 30 or 40 years.

If you get your decisions right from the start, the small bumps on the way should smooth themselves out. Knowing what your plan is and being willing to stick with it therefore makes investing a lot less stressful and ultimately more rewarding.

The greatest

gift any investor can give themselves is time. The longer your money is able to work for you, the greater the benefit
