E xplore along Albert Road opposite the Old Biscuit Mill in Woodstock and you’ll discover

a growing cluster of fascinating businesses and co-operatives. One of these is Cinta Food Market, a converted cottage that now houses five artisan food stalls, cheerful yellow umbrellas in the front courtyard and a welcoming vibe inside.

Zak Harris came up with the idea a year ago. His mother is Cape Malay cookery expert Zainie Misbach, and his grandparents founded Biesmielllah and Noon Gun restaurants, so food runs in the family. “Woodstock has become a real melting pot. All sorts of diverse people live and work here,” he says. “There was a need for a social space to bring people together and connect them in a neutral place where everyone is comfortable.” For local residents it’s a friendly and affordable halaal eatery where families can enjoy a good meal. For creatives working in Woodstock, it’s a regular spot for a breakfast of freshly cooked flavours (the coffee bar is in full flow from 7.30am), and the free Wi-Fi is useful for working lunches.

First to welcome new visitors is Anni, cooking up an appetising selection of Cape Malay dishes at The Little

Bo-Kaap Kitchen, with the best potato and fennel samoosas I’ve ever tasted. The next stall is Sim’s Concept, where Mexican fusion is just the start of Sim’s creativity as he dreams up new twists on burritos, quesadillas and more. Vimbai cooks authentic Thai street food – all the sauces are made from scratch each morning and the stir fries and curries are freshly cooked on the spot. There’s no alcohol served. Instead, there’s an excellent coffee bar with beans sourced from Truth Coffee, and the cheerful team at Souper Juice offering a dynamic range of juices and smoothies – my ginger zing was perfect for a winter boost – and soups will be added to the menu shortly.

Cinta (pronounced chinta) means love in Malay, and the market is all about people. In selecting the businesses that share the space, Zak has found inspired chefs with a passion for their food and genuine smiles for the customers. Relationships with suppliers are just as important, and local means Woodstock itself – the excellent halaal butchery is on the corner, the dairy is across the road, and the green-grocer is close by. Small, but warm and friendly, the market looks set to grow into a thriving community hub.

Neethlingshof: long history, short stories

Most visitors to Stellenbosch wine estate Neethlingshof, are familiar with its landmark

fountain and the row of stately pines lining the road to the cellar. But have you ever noticed the flowers? For this most memorable symbol of the estate is hidden in plain sight, high above the doorway to the historic manor house. There, six flowers in the plaster are a permanent reminder of the woman who laid the foundations for modern-day Neethlingshof.

That woman was Maria Magdalena Marais. The young widow – her husband had died the previous year – had the cement flowers embedded in the gable in 1814: one for herself, and one for each of her five children.

It’s but one of the stories on the farm now celebrated in the estate’s portfolio of reserve wines dubbed the Short Story Collection. Maria and her children are celebrated in Six Flowers, the flagship white wine produced on the 470ha estate. The wine is built around Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, with splashes of Viognier, Gewürztraminer and Weisser Riesling for aromatics and complexity.

“The Short Story Collection was born with The Owl Post Pinotage,” says Neethlingshof’s affable cellar master, De Wet Viljoen. Conservation is a key focus on the estate, and dozens of owl posts have been erected to encourage natural predators into the vineyards. The Owl Post Pinotage is made from a single vineyard block,

and balances upfront red and black fruits with a spicy nose and firm acidity – perfect for a special occasion.

The same goes for The Caracal Red Blend, a classic Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Merlot. A nod to the elusive cats that have been spotted on the estate’s wilderness corridors, it’s a wine of elegance and strength – not unlike its namesake.

Speaking of namesakes, rounding out the Short Story Collection is, fittingly, a wine named in honour of the woman who started it all.

The Maria is a Noble Late Harvest crafted from Weisser Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc, using vines on the high slopes of the farm where moist sea breezes create perfect conditions for the “noble rot” to occur late into the harvest period.

Marrying a fragrant bouquet of dried apricots and peaches with a balanced palate of fruitcake, honey and marmalade, it’s a fine tribute to the woman who first shaped this Stellenbosch estate.

I t was a truly perfect day when we visited Idiom: unseasonably hot for autumn. We were greeted with

bubbly before boarding the shuttle that would take us to our mysterious venue.

After visiting Idiom’s gorgeous mountain vineyard, sampling the delicious wine and savouring food from the new menu, I felt compelled to hear the stories of the close-knit family behind the wines. Alberto and Roberto Bottega, father and son team and owners of Idiom, indulged me a little.

After 30 years of working in Joburg, Alberto decided it was time to retire. His heart was set on the Cape, where he grew up after emigrating from Italy as a boy. In his mind he pictured himself relaxing with a glass of wine, strolling through vineyards and enjoying the majestic backdrop of mountains and ocean. Alberto says that his so-called retirement has been anything but relaxing, but immensely satisfying.

Idiom’s location is unique. On our way there we mounted winding dusty roads that seemed never to end. The view, however, was out of this world.

Alberto says that he came across Idiom’s location in 1997 by chance at an auction. He took a chance and made his bid before seeing the full site because his wife had grown up in Somerset West, and, quite simply, it felt right. “Sometimes you cannot put a price on a gut feeling,” Alberto says.

The design of the new Idiom Tasting Centre (Alberto’s son, Roberto, developed the concept, and daughter Silvana added her own creative input) draws strongly on the family’s Italian heritage. “The building mirrors South Africa’s unique positioning in the world of wine – a mixture of new-world opulence and old-world elegance,” Roberto says. The design features classic Roman arches and hand-cut stone porticos. “The combination of these elements also reflects our Italian and South African roots,” he says.

When asked what makes Idiom stand out, Roberto says, “Two words: ‘wow’ and ‘delicious’”. These are two words he often hears when guests taste his wines. “The challenge is to offer a sensory food and wine experience worthy of similar comments,” he says.

When asked about his hopes for the future of Idiom, Alberto says, “We hope the new facility will allow more people to experience Idiom and that future generations of the family will show an interest in taking forward what we started.”

Hide and seekTracking furniture trends

for the past few seasons, there’s an interesting

shift in the use of leather in international shows and markets.

While there will always be a place for the old-school leather couch as a status piece in interiors, more cutting-edge designers are using the material in different ways to give it an updated appeal.

One of the main things we’re seeing in more conceptual product design in terms of leather is treating the material in single, flat planes or sheets. Traditional Chesterfield designs and even the more contemporary slouchy leather treatments are more mainstream in their pitch at the moment, and structural leather is the order of the day for directional pieces.

Internationally, Nendo leads the way in this almost geometrically pared-down approach to leather design, but we’re seeing local applications of the trend too.

Cape Town-based leather goods and furniture studio, Dark Horse, is known for its interesting treatments of the material, and

its new Metropolitan chair is a great local interpretation of this trend. It also features the leather-plus-metal combo that we’re seeing a lot of internationally, contrasting structure with tactility.

This trend is tied up in the shifting perceptions around materials more generally. We’re seeing a marked focus on leather alternatives in international trade shows – whether it’s with designers using fish leather or synthetic options – and while that doesn’t mean traditional leather will be superseded, it does mean people are reconsidering it in their material palette.

These new kinds of treatments revere and elevate the material rather than taking it for granted. It’s a conscious, intentional use of leather, and something we should be seeing more and more of in the future.

When Omeros Demetriou became fascinated with olive products, he was

inspired to open a deli stocking some of the country’s finest olive oils. The Olive Branch Deli also serves as a “community grocer”, providing local artisans and vendors, who traditionally sell at weekend markets, with a platform to market their products on a daily basis in the heart of the Cape Town CBD.

Q: Howdidyourbusinessstart?A: The Olive Branch Deli has its origins

in the family watch shop where my father, in typical Cypriot style, was selling his home-made olives under the counter. He asked me to type out some of the recipes to share with friends and family. I happened across an article highlighting the many health benefits associated with olives and olive oil. Further research revealed that South Africa was producing some amazing olive products, but that the industry was struggling to compete against much cheaper imports. My interest led me into contributing to an

Work starting on Tshwane Regional MallConstruction of the Tshwane

Regional Mall begins this month, according to the

Public Investment Corporation (PIC) and Isibonelo Property Services. Building costs of the mall are estimated at R996m, with part of the funding provided by the PIC.

The mall was called a catalytic project at the Tshwane International Trade and Infrastructure Investment Conference in May. It is expected to change the

A Bantry Bay home sold for R290m in May, the priciest residential property in

South Africa, according to sellers Denise Dogon, CEO, Dogon Group Properties, and partners Adrien Epstein and Vicky Atlas.

The modern house by design and architecture company Saota, has state-of-the-art finishes throughout and luxurious accommodation. The property takes up three erven

hotels to be rolled out in Africa: in Nigeria, Zimbabwe and Mauritius.

Africa is considered the biggest growth market for the hotel group, with Carlson Rezidor signing a new hotel deal in Africa every 37 days and opening a new hotel in Africa every 60 days. “Africa is by far our biggest growth market,” says Wolfgang M Neumann, president and CEO, The Rezidor Hotel Group.

Carlson Rezidor also announced the signing of its first Quorvus Collection in Africa: the five-star, 244-room luxury Emerald Grand Hotel & Spa in Lagos, Nigeria.

The group also signed a new Radisson Blu Hotel Harare in Zimbabwe (245 rooms) and a Park Inn by Radisson in Quatre Bornes, the new commercial hub of Mauritius.

Every year, Sanlam conducts a survey that looks at the state of pension saving in South Africa.

Called BENCHMARK, it asks ordinary South Africans about their savings habits and how financially prepared they believe they are for retirement.

The survey also includes a sample of people already on pension. It asks them about how they built up their retirement capital, whether the income it is now generating for them is sufficient and how they are spending that money.

What makes the second part of this research particularly interesting is that it shows some clear differences between those who have retired comfortably, and those who don’t have enough. The pensioners in the group who are now better off, are simply more likely to have done a few things that may have seemed small many years ago, but are now making a very big difference:

1 They started saving earlier.This may seem obvious, but unfor-

tunately it is often only obvious in hindsight. The longer your money is invested, the more it will compound and grow. Even small contributions can become meaningful over 40 years.

2 They didn’t only rely on their pension or provident fund.

The majority of pensioners who

retired well, had made additional contributions to a personal retirement annuity. These savings were made over and above their compulsory savings in an employer’s pension scheme. They were also more likely to have multiple sources of income in retirement, including rental from property and dividends from shares. This shows that they had invested in a diversified portfolio of assets and not only in one retirement product.

3 They understood the importance of not withdrawing from

their retirement savings.Not preserving your retirement savings when changing jobs is perhaps the biggest mistake that you can make when it comes to building towards your financial future. Not only are the tax implications severe, but if you take this money out, you are robbing yourself of one of the most important things when it comes to growing your money, which is time.

4 They were more likely to get financial advice.

A significantly higher number of pensioners who had retired well had met with a professional adviser in the years before they stopped working. They had also done so much earlier than members of the other group. This clearly shows the value of having someone guiding your financial planning and supporting you in reaching your goals.
