Yo Love on quest for best Savor chuck wagon flavors at ‘Cook-off’by K. M. LANG

Gleaming berries and brilliant kiwifruit adorn the walls of Southern Chandler’s Yo Love Frozen Yogurt, and its future looks every bit as bright as its decor. The yogurt shop, located in The Shops at Pecos Ranch, was recently purchased by local restaurateurs Mark and Watchuree Gerding, who hope to turn their already delightful self-serve treatery into a one-of-a-kind destination for parties, fundraisers and even business meetings.

“It’s a beautiful place,” says Mark, who

previously owned a Scottsdale eatery with Watchuree for 10 years. “There’s no reason why we shouldn’t expand the concept out to make it uniquely different from everyone else. We’re excited to take this place to the highest level we can possibly take it.”

Yo Love, explains Mark, is larger than most neighborhood frozen yogurt shops. Its cheerful interior is refreshingly clean, and the red-and-green theme is intended to promote healing and dispel inertia.

A portion of the dining room closes to form a private party room for up to 15 guests, and the entire dining room, which holds up to 40, can be reserved any day of the week from 10 a.m. until noon. A “glass doodle wall” gives young artists a place to express themselves, and guests can also take advantage of Yo Love’s free Wi-Fi and four large-screen televisions.

“Private parties can customize their options,” says Mark, explaining that guests can choose from face painting, movies, fresh pizza, yogurt cup decorating and, of course, “Yo Love frozen yogurt with all the endless toppings.”

Yo Love’s 12 flavors include nonfat, no-sugar-added and nondairy offerings, and toppings range from fresh fruit to decadent sweets. New flavors are added weekly, and customer favorites, including vanilla bean, gourmet chocolate and cake batter, are always “on tap.”

Mark, a long-time chef, is in the process of adding frappuccinos, smoothies, yogurt shakes and hot and iced coffee to the menu, and the dining room will soon see the addition of a frozen yogurt cake case.

Experience the sounds, smells and tastes of the Old West at the third annual Chandler Chuck Wagon Cook-off from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Fri., Nov. 9 and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sat., Nov. 10 at

Tumbleweed Ranch in Tumbleweed Park, 2250 S. McQueen Rd., Chandler.

Help kids take ‘fantasy flight’

Provide a memory of a lifetime for 120 underprivileged elementary children by buying a $5 raffle ticket, and get a chance to win $787 and gift certificates.

United Airlines Fantasy Flight, a nonprofit in operation for 17 years, is selling the raffle tickets to benefit Children First Academy and Concordia Elementary School. The drawing is held Jan. 7, 2013.

Discover your “Oola” in a new book, “Oola: Find Balance in an Unbalanced World,” co-authored by

Chandler resident Troy Amdahl and Dave Braun, with a foreword written by former NFL star Kurt Warner. The book is set for release on Nov. 15.

Braun and Amdahl admit that the word “Oola” is something of a new addition to the dictionary, but “its four simple letters contain the power to help anyone achieve what life often lacks – balance, growth and a healthy dose of awesomeness.” Readers can learn to achieve balance and growth in seven key areas of life: fitness, financial, family, field, faith, friends and fun.

“By opening up and sharing our true stories, knowledge and experiences, we hope to inspire readers to pursue a life that is balanced and growing. Anyone can get there and the feeling is truly mind-blowing. It’s like finding $20 in the couch or getting a Christmas bonus in July.” says Amdahl.

According to Braun, “Oola is that perfect state of awesomeness. It’s when you are in the zone. Your life is balanced and growing in the seven

key areas of life.” Braun uses the book to share his experiences of losing his own “Oola” and how he is diligently working to get it back.

The book is endorsed by Mark Victor Hansen, co-author of “Chicken Soup for the Soul.”

“We’ve had Olympians, bestselling authors, dominant industry leaders and public figures approach us to provide their full endorsement. It appears that the “OolaLife” is proving attractive even to those who are already at the top of their game,” Amdahl adds.

All proceeds from the event go directly to ASAS, a nonprofit organization dedicated to enabling disabled veterans to live a more productive life through the use of service animals. Due to the influx of disabled veterans, ASAS is in dire need of a comprehensive training center.

According to the organizations founders, President Gerad Claseman and Executive Director Debbie Claseman from Sun Lakes, they have managed thus far without a center of their own, but are now faced with the huge project of funding a center to better serve veterans who have become disabled while serving and protecting our country.
