This project “Fashion Hub” is more particularly projection of an idea to create a space for the fashion designers of all scales, to promote their work and reach the masses. Fashion needs to be displayed with care, facilities and extravagance that only architecture precisely chosen a n d d e s i g n e d f o r t h e p u r p o s e c a n d o j u s t i c e .

Fashion Industry in India is in nascent stage at the moment and has great potential to make its mark on the world stage. Indian fashion has thousands of years of tradition behind it. India has a rich and varied textile heritage. Each region of India has its own unique native costume and traditional attire. Fashion Industry in India is growing at a rapid pace with international events such as the India Fashion Week gaining popularity and annual shows by fashion designers being held in the major cities of India. Indian fashion industry got a big boost by the victories of a number of Indian beauty queens in International events such as the Miss World and Miss Universe.

Due to the of the has become an importantdecentralization Mumbai city, Bandra commercial centre along with the newly developing centre for trade-BMRDA.Hence to maintain growth rate of business activities in Mumbai regions, which is so important for the entire country. Bandra is the best place for such fashion centre.Considering the zone dadar-prabhadevi and northwards till andheri, bandra is a centrally located area.Bandra has a right balance of commercial, business and residential activities. The site at bandra would be ideal as it is connected to the western express highway and at the same time is also near to the railway lines, which is an ideal condition for the location of the fashion centre.

The site is bounded by roads and a small part adjoining an open ground.The two roads on all sides are 30m wide.The front of the site faces the diamond bourse and 440 rooms trident Oberoi hotel which is under construction.Easily accessibly by road, rail and car.Domestic as well as international airport are close to the site.Next to the site is cultural centre and entertainment centre.Surrounded by companies like Windsor at the far back. Bharat diamond bourse in front.

About site:The plot area is 70,000 sq.m which is allocated in textile block. The plot is under the land ceiling act, 1976. the land could be allotted on a lease period for 80 year. F.S.I. of 2.The minimum setback along the roads for the site is 12m.The maximum ht from the ground level of any building within IFBC has to be permitted by department of civil aviation which is currently 40m.The plot is already developed with roads, storm water drainage, water supply, and underground sewage.

Fashion as an industry has existed ever since man started dressing.. Over the years it has developed into an industry of extreme showmanship..

An industry with creativity to be displayed in multi folds, starting from display of fabric and fiber at a small level to haute couture , fashion needs to be displayed with care, facilities and extravagance that only architecture- precisely chosen and designed for the purpose can do justice..

Fashion in India though in its nascent stages, is growing exponentially, with our diverse cultures and fabrics helping the growth.. This growth needs to be supported rightly with intelligent and ample infrastructure..

The article in a magazine shows that fashion hub is not just a concept rather being a project converting into a real life dream for many, who are part of this forum.

Height of the structure is intended to keep at human eye level in most of the masses. Theses masses are divided into fragments and are placed at an angle. This formation achieve two goals1.forms pockets between each other, which facilitates natural light in the building and forms green zone 2.adds to the visual connectivity,buildings placed at an angle gives directional flow for the visitors. Strategic positions of the vital functions is one of the key factor. Also public areas are separated from the day to day activities, which maintains privacy.

The design intent is to build the structure that acts as a “ramp” to portray fashion at every place of the site, “changing” at every turn and “interacting” with the people through different structures strategically placed after each element of the edifice…

The “Ramp” is the ultimate showplace of displaying fashion…

Fashion is analogous to “change”.. of lifestyle, thinking, cultures and mind sets…

“Interaction” between the artist, the art and the people is the platform on which any art rests.. especially fashion and architecture..

Ramp, Change and Interaction are the main ideas that form the foundation of the edifice that stands as this Fashion hub..

Central auditorium is a vital function of the campus and has been positioned between the ancillary activities and outdoor fashion show. Ancillary functions form a cluster around the auditorium and overlook the courtyard carrying life, water & abundant greenery. The space attracts interaction and contemplation. Retail tower break the monotony of the ground structures & stands tall to make a landmark.

The form of the building has been generated to allow reflected diffused light into the building through courtyard. The proport ion of the b locks facilitates two distinct work areas and a passage in the center. The work areas will receive daylight during the day minimizing the requirement of the artificial lighting.

Aims at using architecture and its nuances as tools to create a plethora of experiences & enriching the day-to-day lives of the inhabitants attempts mature integration of the varied programs into a homogeneous campus with a seamless juxtaposition of the built & unbuilt.

Dead wall and water bodies acts a backdrop to the outdoor photo shoot areas. Tree foliage and the systematic formation of landscape acts a breather.

Sense of scale and perception of space an be achieved by breaking up of bigger as well as open areas into smaller pockets connected by referential semi-open transitions.

Interlocking masses along with courts by their side forms a life within.

India is a significant destination for design development, raw material as well as the manufacturing for the global fashion. Fashion Hub is a vision of a space where each of these elements meet and do business together, thus support & complement each other; generating higher profits due to the exclusive infrastructure and economic support on offer. Fashion hub is an unprecedented, self sufficient, commercial township, which will provide a permanent destination for the fashion shows & events, fully equipped with facilities & infrastructure to facilitate business b e t w e e n I n d i a d e s i g n f r a t e r n i t y & f o r e i g n b u y e r s .

Facilities like amphitheatres and auditoriums, fashion shoots studios, media rooms would create a space for designers & buyers to interact. There is an integrated retail zone for designers to display their works which would also include all luxury brands. The Fashion Hub is equipped with leisure spaces such as restaurants, theatres, art galleries & museums. A crafts bazaar would make rich Indian heritage of textile available with commercial interpretation will attract foreign visitors & buyers.

Museum ramp is wrapped around the tower & climbs from ground to first floor with one side being opaque & other being glazed, overlooking the campus. For the easy accessibility restaurants & small eateries are placed along the road. The important functions such as central auditorium, allied small auditoriums, museum, administration, retail tower are bound by the metaphor ‘’walkway” or a “Ramp”, running through the campus & changing at every turn.

The main street which runs through the site is the thread between the build fabric and holds the homogeneity. Street takes turn & reveals element of surprise. Each space acts as a interaction space for the person who is part of the campus and follows the vocabulary. Combination of green spaces with the built gets in harmony in the design

PROFESSIONAL WORK

This landmark project is located in the heart of the city and is synthesis of contemporary art and luxury. One of the largest project in an over expanding metropolis of Pune, which enjoys close proximity to the airport. Hotel with 230 rooms, high end retail stores, speciality restaurants for the dining. The five star property is accompanied by tech park, which acts a business generator and will be a key factor in escalating the development in the precinct near by. The hotel tower is comprised of simple rectangular interlocking blocks to form a homogeneous flat glazed facade, which will allow the visitors to enjoy the view of the surrounding hilly areas in all seasons. The supporting facilities, multi cuisine restaurants, clubs, banquets form a plethora at the base and accentuates the experience of the flat facade. Slender supporting columns, peeping at intervals helps in framing the facade. Glazed facade is designed to have mosaic pattern to bring reminiscence of crystal space. Swimming pool, indoor and outdoor spa, gym and an exclusive lounge at the top level overlook the golf course.

VIEW OF THE COMPLEX

THE PODIUM:Podium at the top three floors parking, public areas for hotel, retail and office areas increases life within. Podium level acts l ike a grand urban space measuring 5 acres. Footprint below the podium has been designed to efficiently handle circulation of 200 cars and 4000 two wheelers per day.

The glazed masses on four sides with life carrying podium within forms a sooting environment for employees and tourist. It is a city within city experience. Contemporary landscape blending with linear water bodies and stone walkways are in sync with the design language of the glazed facades.

PROFESSIONAL WORK

This 50,000 sq.ft office is a combination meditative soothing workspace coupled with a vibrant and buzzing environment. The effect has been achieved by connecting all the spaces visually and by the inner sanctum that is designed as a garden. This building is the corporate headquarter of the Indian subsidiary of a German company. The central hillock forms the main and the more interesting horizontal and vertical access in the building, by removing elevator far away. The lift shaft is taken away from the main circulation areas. This was an architectural effort at making occupants use the hillock to reach other parts of the building and make it difficult to reach the elevator. after occupancy, study revealed that people actually prefer the landscaped hillock to circulate and they also find it more pleasurable. This is the biggest architectural triumph in this structure as it helps save enormous amount of energy, and at the same time making people interact and appreciate the greenery. also functions like the gymnasium and meeting rooms integrated in the courtyards make people use these spaces more constructively. they become more vibrant and active...

Horizontal circulation happening from the west side connector and east side bridges also connecting the lift shaft. the elevator is removed from both the blocks and placed into a beautiful water body. It has been placed in the most vibrant place in the structure, but form their respective work areas it is a long distance, also passing through the offices of higher ups. Result of this exercise is to make the occupants use the central space for vertical circulation instead of the elevator.

Cross ventilation through office blocks also facilitated by the ventury south face shaded from the high summer sun effect and moisture created by softscapes substantially decrease temperatures in the enclosed spaces, thus reducing the load on the HVAC systems.

The central hillock is seperated from the two blocks to get light till the ground floor and also to facilitate ventury effect.

A rectangular block stretched in the east west direction, with large exposure to the north and south sides to derive diffused light into the work areas with central circulations spaces

Large overhangs on south side and slightly smaller on the north sides shades the glass faces to avoid direct sunlight form entering the spaces.

Addition of skewed block on the east side, indicating the entrance this block on the first and second floor areas is occupied by managing director and CFO on one side looking into the factory premises and on the other into the water expanse. this is one of the most important spaces in the structure. the toilet blocks are consciously screened by concrete walls indicating private areas

CIRCULATION

This 50,000 sq.ft office is a combination meditative soothing workspace coupled with a vibrant and buzzing environment. The facade of the building sets it apart, as it is created with traditional materials, such as concrete and wood, the exterior is designed such that these elements take on a minimal and contemporary sleekness. The facade of the building is a simple grid, as it can be seen in the box-like design of the windows as well as the straight line grooves carved into the flat concrete exterior.

The central space becomes the most important space in the entire complex. Inspired from a valley created between two rocky dwellings, carrying life, water, and abundant greenery... hillock.. breathes life i n to the o the rw i se mundane work environment. The space inspires and attracts interaction and contemplation.

Water: the reflecting pool on the east side collects rain water from all levels and terraces, finally emptying into recharge wells. the water body also has a calming influence on the occupants in a very competitive office set up. all the levels on the central hillock look down into the water body giving repose to the work environment.

Concrete: form finished concrete has been used as the primary material. on the east and the west face load bearing walls are formed using this material, with very small openings to avoid low sun entering the spaces. the walls are folded intermittently to increase their strength without increasing the thickness. The inside of these folds are filled with aereated concrete walls forming a ventilated cavity, drasitcally reducing heat transmission inside.

Wood: wooden screens cut the direct sunlight on the south face. these screens have 5 adjustable angles and can be opened or closed, depending on the available light.

The long south exposed to the high summer sun need to be protected from glare and radiation entering the building. A deep overhang has been created on the southern face for the same. Also smaller overhangs on lower floors further break the sun rays from directly falling on the building.A cube projecting from the building also helps in shading entrance area. The cube, visually also indicates the entrance in a heavy subtle way also acting as a porch. Meeting rooms in upper floors occupy this cube only looking sideways o avoid the harsh summer afternoon sun.

The westerly and south westerly prevelant breeze has been incorporated in the building to be enjoyed during winters and rainy season and cut down on precious electricity being spent on air conditioning. The narrow opening on the west side into the atrium creates venturi effect thereby increasing the wind velocity and cooling.

INTERIOR WORK SPACES

The inner landscape is divided into smaller niches to give each space a more personal feel. At the same time, the visual connectivity over all the levels of the building gives the space the illusion of volume and drama. Hardy plants such as bamboo, creepers and artica palms have been used to create dense foliage. The design of roof ensures that the plants receive ample sunlight and air.

The atrium formed between the two wings have been used to open out the building to the reflecting pool and the coconut plantation beyond. Also the wings embrace each other all floors through terraced levels which also act as recreation spaces for the employees. Sometimes only for reflection siting under a tree. But always maintaining a vibrant and lively work environment. Employees are encouraged to manually make vertical moments by use of these lush landscaped terraced, rather than the elevator.

The initial architectural proposal for 4G control center is located in Reliance Teck Park (RCITPL). The proposal was comprised of NOC and allied corporate office to support the facility. The brief suggested that NOC could be a stand alone structure without any connection to other facilities. Definite mechanism needed to take visitor's directly to visitor's area and back, hence resolution on the entry and exit routes is a primary aim. Space matrix is provided for each department with size. The displays/ video walls need not be cubes but could be composed in a manner to suit the intended design.

The concept is a fundament use of climatology. Complex has four independant towers which are binded by the plaza on the first floor. On tilting the blocks at 45 degree, pockets between the buildings open up to the south westerly winds which will keep plaza significantly vibrant. Building cluster keeps the plaza in shade for most of the time in a day for employees to take a stroll at any leisure time. Soft corneres allows wind to come in smoothly and unobstructed. The central administration tower with adjustant to the corporate office form a fluid juxtaposition of built, carrying horizontal lines on the facade to make it look homogenous.

As per initial proposal, the oval mass twisted on each floor. But after the client’s brief and considering the functionality of the space, the floor plate was kept oval with the central atrium. Four service cores are placed along the glazing with double height floor plates and central atrium adding to the visual connectivity. The ramp is a visitor’s loop at the central atrium, changing it’s location as per the control room and carrying life at the central space. The structural grid is placed along the internal and external glazing. Buildings and spaces impacts human’s behaviour, psychology and day to day lifestyle. The design interacted with both internally and externally, forming life within.

The ramp is a visitor’s path connecting at every four floors and changing the location as per the control room. Staircases and other human carrying elements are places near the central atrium to enrich the visual experience. Floor plate profile at the edges was made to be slicker to make the structure more elegant. The visitor’s path was made to independent of the conrol room functioning with it’s entry and exits not hindering the day to day activity.

The 4G facility is designed to cater to three primary requirements, control tower being stand alone facility, separate route for the visitor’s and employees and to make a landmark structure. The dynamic masses carry strong horizontal glazing lines and connects the independent towers at intermediate levels. The control tower was proposed to be an oval structure, twisting at each floor to form a strong geometry and enriching the visual experience. Windows on each facade interestingly given a fluid geometry which helps in reducing the glare and direct sunlight. Terrace gardens on intermediate plaza levels forms break out spaces. Connecting bridges from the supporting facility and control center overlook the entire site creating a vantage point.

Building evolved from facing the internal road to nodal vocabulary after tilting the masses at 45 degree and allows the wind to penetrate forming shading at the plaza.

Along the main road, site forms peninsula and hence, control room is placed at the tip acting as a site landmark.

Important location in the corporate park and being the elite facility, 4G towers needed to be designed uniquely.

After tilting the masses at 45 degree, south facade changes the position for sun rays to not hit at 90 degree.

The project site is located in Lab-3 & Lab-4 of RTG cluster which was originally planned as Laboratory complex in RCITPL. The core and shell works of the structure was 90% complete when both the structures was handed over to project team to adapt the space for new function of setting up a network operations centre for the 4G utilitiesand services.At the time of briefing the project programme was in nascent stage and the business group requirement was still under validation. The base-line brief by Owner was to create a facility conducive for efficient operations, future expansion and flexibility without compromising on its preventability as a business tool.The site is essentially two structures adjacent to each other, arranged as part of series of four near identical structures arrayed along the convex side of a curvilinear double height atrium. The concave side of Atrium is predominantly facing South and is the entrance to the complex. Each structure is a three storied RCC framed structure with typical floor height of 6m. The floor plate is 38m x 70m and was essentially laid out and serviced to function as a lab. Post juxtaposition of client brief & programme it was observed that an independent entry for Visitors needs to provided & independent link was to be established between the two structures. The fan shaped open space between two structure was the obvious choice for both additions. The Glazed side of the wall was reserved for cluster back office function & control rooms which require more controlled light was clustered along the solid/Opaque enclosures. The tie beam which was a potential eyesore in the double height space was at once adopted to be accommodated as part of the design concept which materialized as visitor gallery. Since the building function and occupancy density has changed, appropriate fire exists were planned one of this was used as architectural feature also.

The double height space of 12mtr height was envisioned as a main state of the art control room with visitor experience facility. The main challenge was to transform this huge space in to a human relative space without losing the grandeur. This transformation was predominantly driven by the console layout, visitor's bridge, acoustics, lighting/ceiling and air conditioning.

The structure had a double height space which became the core of the spatial concept. The visitors are ushered to a vantage point at an elevated level and offered a panoramic multilayered view of activities in the facility. The envelope of this space is made of soft fluidic surface in the ceiling to emulate movement of fabric in open air. The walls are lined with acoustic material in a pattern vaguely reminiscent of modern built environment. The flooring creates a neutral background with subtle detail in shades and surface for sweeping arcs of console desks. The ambient lighting is achieved by LED down-lighters. Different lighting scene can be created with help of wall washers & up-lighters. The elevated visitor gallery has a backlit canopy with colour changers to play the 'Jio' colours.

There is a deliberate attempt to derive the circulation of visitors is in clockwise direction as per the design brief from client. To avoid overlap of visitors and operators route, accompaniment of operators bridge and visitors lift were added. Formatting the circulation for operators and visitors also involved different levels of accesses control, which have been considered and designed for.

DOUBLE HEIGHT SPACE- REFLECTED CEILING PLAN D E S I G N P O R T F O L I O

The ceiling of the central control room was envisioned as a very light fabric ceiling. The idea was to create maximum drama with minimum inventory and customization. To achieve this we worked with 4 modules of length 8m and 4m with four varying widths. Each module is a three dimensional and compilations of these modules create a dynamic, wavy ceiling. The fabric has an acoustical property which helps in balancing the overall acoustics. The ceiling makes a way for the hanger supports of the visitor's bridge by means of continuous 200mm gap in the linear direction between modules. This gap also houses lights which lit up the entire control room. This functional lighting gives a uniform distribution of light achieving 300 lux.

FABRIC CEILING CONCEPT

The vertical surfaces are treated with fabric paneling of four colors. The play of colors brings warm ambiance. The fabric paneling pattern was designed to complement the fabric ceiling. It also brings in order and randomness like the ceiling. This fabric paneling is a major component of acoustical treatment. Visitor Bridge is the continuation of the visitor experience and designed as a viewing gallery for control room. The visitor bridge cuts through the double height space at 6mtr level. It props itself to the existing concrete beams and columns. The bridge cantilevers out on both side of the beam at strategic locations and wraps around the existing columns to create views on both the sides of the bridge without gathering operator's attention. The skin of the bridge is designed with strategically placed solid walls and glazing to create an orchestrated element of surprise. LED powered translucent fabric ceiling adds an ambient feel to the walk. The design intent was to enhance elements like Video walls, bright colours and console, where in floor plane is a backdrop. It had to be neutral in terms of colour, texture and pattern so that all other elements get absorbed in it with harmony. Grey colour adds depth to the space and the contest in finishes of the consoles thus becomes a highlight in the control room.

The space configuration allows complete exhibition space to function as one seamless entity and also has the potential to be used by multiple leaser simultaneously or operate only a part of the exhibition space. Business Centre facility can be conveniently leased for the convention use during non-exhibition days. Executive Café for exhibitors has potential to operate as fine dine restaurant for the rest of the year along to augment public friendly activities in the Package-I activities

TRIPURA HAAT:Tripura Haat is meant to be a permanent fair showcasing the crafts, food and culture of Tripura and the surrounding region. The diversity of handicrafts and artefacts and cultural events from Tripura and surrounding region would add a local context and richness to the experience of the campus. The facility in the campus acts as a venue to exhibit to exhibit their skills for crafts persons, artists and performers. With a blend of art shopping, local cuisines for the foodies and entertainment becomes a place to relax ad enjoy for the visitors.

FOOD COURT:The food court is an usually indoor plaza or a common area within a facility that is contiguous with the counters of multiple food vendors and providers a common area for self-serving dining. In exhibition and convention scenario food court has to cater to very large number of people, sometimes in a relatively in a shorter span.

Exhibition center acts a catalyst to the rapid growth of Tripura and north-east region. While we cater to 35,000 sq.ft., the demand for exhibition already exceeds 70,000 sq.ft.

The building is oriented to respond context, topography and climate. The habitable spaces are arranged on the north side for better visual connection with the fair ground as well as to absorb natural north light.The service facilities are arranged on the south side which acts a buffer from south sun heat, resulting in lowering down the temperature in the exhibition hall.

The building is flexible enough to run by the single user entirely or can be used by used by different users simultaneously or half open and half shut scenarios which increases the salability factor and lower down the operation cost.

Business center facility is for exhibitors in exhibition days and can be made open to public for the convention use.

Executive cafes for exhibitors and has potential to run as an high end restaurant for the rest of the year along with other food facilities of Package-I, Phase-I.

Exhibition center was initially located at the end of the site and was designed differently as per previous site locations. After positioning the structure strategically near the fair ground and overlooking the pond it acts a landmark, defining Tripura as a growing cultural and industrial hub. The site has heavy counters near the pond. The structure is divided in two parts. Exhibition center and business center. Business center takes the strategic location next to the pond and overlooks the public zone. Along with business center, restaurants, podium and auditorium are a part of the business center. Exhibition center and business center have glazing on the north and east side respectively to receive maximum sunlight and visual interaction at the same time. Exhibition center is currently designed to be a non airconditioned facility with clear-story light in the roof and mechanical fans to keep the hot air circulating. Business center along with auditorium is a fully airconditioned facility. Both the structures are designed with a light weight metal roof with supporting structure in steel. Also both the structures are designed to be independent structures with level drop of 2.5m between both the structures. The 7m passage between the structures acts a dividing passage which will eventually get connected to the jute mill structure, which will be converted into an exhibition hall.

The strong geometry of the simple arc and rectangular interlocking masses changes the definition of the architectural vocabulary of Tripura. The 7m counter is used as a design feature and auditorium is placed at this strategic location. Due to poor soil conditions, steel cross bracing is proposed at the end of the auditorium to manage the forces. Also pile foundation is proposed for the business center due to poor soil condition and proximity to the pond.

Design IntentThe design concept adopts an architectural approach that creates an outdoor spatial quality conducive to interactive place making.

Successfully implementing this approach of an outdoor responsive architecture relies as much on the created spaces as on the attributes of the organization, scale and texture.

This pursuit of the social, the ‘’publicness’’ and interactive quality also define architecture of our buildings.

Corridors become ‘’streets of comfort’’ with induced airflow and rooftops draw from cultural traditions to become meeting spaces or spaces for quiet reflection.

Buildings, building elements, components and treatments are climate responsive and yet orchestrate the creation of public spaces as outdoor rooms.

Pergolas to cover terraces such that they shade the exposed surfaces reducing heat gain. Using plants and other vegetation for shading, especially on the east, west and south facades.

Corner Jaalis allow for light penetration.Jaalis in the roof parapet allows air movement over the hot roof surface comparatively cooling it down in day-time and increase speed of heat loss in night time

Using Jharokas to self shade the exposed exterior surfaces thus reducing the direct thermal gain in the living spaces.

The lower ventilator serves dual purpose: by cooling the space without blocking the light and view.

Wind catchers guide outside air over underground tank, inducing evaporation and bringing about a s ignif icant drop in temperature before the air enters the interiors. The hot air rises and escapes through a chimney stack.

Jaalis, pergolas and balconies are an inherent building feature in Jodhpur. We are planning on incorporating jaalis throughout the project for shading spaces from the harsh summer sun and to facilitate cross ventilation

The earth being at a higher temperature than ambient air warms the water in the underground tank which transfers this heat to the rooms above. Windows are kept closed to preserve heat. Lower sun altitude ensures solar penetration into the rooms warming them. Thick insulated walls help in retaining heat in the envelope.

The roof surface is shaded by the solar panels which reduces solar gain considerably. Both shutters of the windows are opened out to increase air changes per hour.Warm air can also be let out through the vents opening into the corridor.

The wind catcher on the roof sucks in air which is let down through a duct in the basement. A mist spray introduces moisture into the air cooling it down to a more comfortable temp. The ground water tank acts as a heat sink and cools the ground level room. Shading prevents solar exposure of the facade. Only the jaali shutter is opened.

Considering a typical day in a season for each - hot & dry , hot & humid and cool type, we can determine appropriate strategies for the same. Through calculation and simulation the change in outdoor and indoor temp can be estimated to gauge comfort span for the occupants.As per CMP guidelines the building is occupied 24/7 and a comfort temperature of 28c must be achieved.

The courts within the building cluster are envisaged as series of outdoor rooms articulating along an organic path thus creating and containing space for appreciation and identity. This interesting and shaded walk starts from academic zone and culminates at the students' mess which is designed as a local landmark to infuse character in the effort of 'place making' and a wind down zone.

The directly exposed walls on South façade are composed of wall system with materials of good thermal capacity and well insulated and protected fenestrations.

The intent has been to create and encourage permeability through the development with a clear hierarchy between semi-public and private space. Spontaneous circulation has been created at elevated level at second floor.These elevated links have the potential to connect to common amenities related to student housing.

The planning grid and size of the rooms has been established to simplify construction. Flexibility is inherent at least till the construction drawing stage. The layout of the rooms provides adequate privacy even with doors left open. The location and design of the wall openings are derived to achieve comfortable ventilation and temperature in the room throughout the year. The need for further flexibility should be accommodated in un-built plots as 'provisional' arrangement on built structure can be potential nuisance for the scholars during the expansion stage.

The rooms are cooled by supply of air collected by wind scoops and channeling them through earth or water reservoir. If required the air can be further be cooled by mist which provides opportunity to humidify air for comfort. Air movement in the corridor is generated by solar chimneys as extractor. The corridor air can be replaced with exhaust air from rooms and cooled air from shaded court. Depending on the modeling a dedicated extractor may be provided or the southern toilet shaft can be treated as solar extractor. This strategy will also keep the washrooms well ventilated.
