From The PrincipalWelcome to the April edition of inTouch the newsletter for Gilmore College. Our year is well and truly underway now and I have enjoyed watching our students settle down to their learning.

As Kwinana’s only inclusive public school Gilmore College carries a special responsibility in educating the city’s young people. This is work that I and my staff take very seriously. Frequently I have mentioned my desire to convey a bright future to all Kwinana students and use optimism as a weapon against pessimistic views. This is just one of the many important planks that make up our College “culture”.

“Culture” in terms of the feel of our College, the way it functions and the behaviours that staff, students and parents/carers demonstrate to one another means everything to me. The people who own that culture are the only ones who can make positive changes to it. The key initiative that we are embarking upon to look at the Gilmore College Culture and make improvements where they are required is the Positive Behaviour Schools (PBS) program.

Many of you would have encountered PBS in your son or daughter’s primary school. The part that you probably remember most would be the development of a three word catch-phrase that sets the tone for the whole school to follow. Often these are aligned to values such as “Respect” or “Personal organisation” etc., but this three word motto is just the surface of the PBS program.

The feedback that students, staff and parents/carers give me resoundingly every time I ask is that they want their school to be known for its many positives. They will tell you stories of amazing learning experiences, programs that they are involved in that they are proud of, students in the school with a determination and self-motivation to achieve regardless of any barriers or hurdles in front of them. Surely with this attitude among the majority of our students, parents/carers and staff (what I call the “Gilmore College Community”) we can build, develop and grow a college culture that is positive and the envy of other schools? I look forward to working with you all to achieve this.

Finally, I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to such a great, (busy and often hectic) start to our College year. We have engaged resources in the Department of Education to assist our ATAR (University entrance) students to improve their results. We have welcomed new cohorts of students in our KIC Engineering and ACEPT Process Plant programs.

On Wednesday 5 April we recognised the contribution of the ANZACs in our College ceremony. The Senior School Gilmore College Ball was held on the last day of Term at the Tompkins on Swan Function Centre, PAT testing has been undertaken with all Year 7-10 students to set the direction of our teaching programs for the year and our Year 10, 11 and 12 students have sat their Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessments as they attempt to achieve their WA Certificate of Education.

With Externally Set Tasks for Year 12 General students, Examinations (7-12), Reports, Lightning Carnivals, Work Placement Blocks, Semester Reward Excursions and parent information evenings (Years 6 and 10) to be undertaken in Term 2 we are, naturally, expecting another busy period.

I urge everyone to keep smiling as we seek to improve everyday.

Gilmore College’s Head Students, Keenan Parish and Tanya Onley, proudly represented the College at the Kwinana Industry Council Arts Awards, on Wednesday 15 March.

The event was held at the Gary Holland Centre, in Rockingham. Art pieces by South Metro high school students, from a range of disciplines, were exhibited over two floors.

They included furniture, paintings, drawings, sculptures and musical interludes, performed by students from Warnbro Community High School and Baldivis Secondary College.

While KIC Director, Chris Oughton, opened and closed the ceremony, Tanya and Keenan hosted the evening and presented awards to winners alongside KIC Vice President, Albert Romano. KIC Education Officer, Debbie Hoey, said “They are the most amazing students and an absolute credit to your school.” Lesley BrownTeacherHumanities and Social Sciences

On Tuesday 28 February, a group of our young Aboriginal Women, attended the Women’s Health Day at Moorditj Koort.

They heard from special visitors from the Health Foundation and Breast Screen WA and experienced Therapeutic Massage.

They were also provided with information on Light Exercise, as well as accessing the Activity Tables and more. It was a wonderful day and the girls had a great time and learnt much from the experience.

A Note from the Music ClassroomsGuitar, voice and drumkit lessons are still rocking out. There have been some slight changes to the timetables and Guitar is now running on Thursdays. See the timetables around school if you aren’t sure when lessons are.

Congratulations to Nicole, Ceda and Alloisha for their performance at the assembly, overcoming several technical difficulties to sing their lovely cover of Bubbly. Also a warm welcome to the Senior School band who performed the Australian National Anthem. Special thanks going to Ms Leslie for running the new ensemble.

Our new Voice teacher, Kaylene Harris has been an amazing breath of fresh air to the College and she is hard at work training our new vocal talent as they stretch their voices for the first time in the Year 7 class. They will be performing an assembly item as soon as Term 2.

Career Portfolio’sThe Process Plant Operator students were presented with their Careers Portfolio’s at ACEPT by the Director, Greg Guppy, Mike Totten from Honeywell and Rohan Smith, Gilmore College.

The Careers Portfolio’s will enable students to start collecting certificates, statements of results and all things they are proud of for interview purposes when they complete the program.

This will give them a head start in their pursuit of apprenticeships.

Zone Swimming CarnivalOn Friday the 3 March more than 35 Gilmore College students, teachers and parents arrived at South Fremantle Senior High School for the Interschool Zone Swimming Carnival.

Enthusiastic students trained twice a week at Kwinana Recquatic Centre in the lead up to the Carnival resulting in a confident team. On the day, many students took away 2nd, 3rd and 4th place ribbons, putting Gilmore College in 4th place overall.

A fantastic effort by all year groups in the freestyle relays was the highlight of the day. Without the help of the Year 11 Sports Coaching students, the day would not have been such a success.

Chillin with the GovHarmony Day is an annual celebration of peace; a day to acknowledge and value the contributions that all people bring to our lives.

For the first time Gilmore College students, together with Mr Smith and Miss Brown, attended the Commonwealth Harmony Day Celebration, held at Government House.

There were many important people in attendance; people with lots of letters after their names. Taison Cassidy and Negin Nawabi were audience to the

wonderful talents of Brianne Yarrin, an Aboriginal contemporary dancer, Scotch College’s Pipe Band, Nedlands Primary School’s Choir, the Penrhos College Orchestra and Bollywood dancing, performed by Hampton Senior High School.

The highlight of the afternoon, however, was meeting her Excellency Kerry Sanderson, Governor of Western Australia. It was an eye opening experience; one which makes me think

that Gilmore College should definitely have a place in the line-up for next year’s event. We left with the understanding that as a

community we must do our best to improve the health and education of all young people and that our behaviour during adversity is what sets us apart from the pack.

2017 information for parents and carers

What is NAPLAN?The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual national assessment for all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. All students in these year levels are expected to participate in tests in reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. All government and non-government education authorities have contributed to the development of NAPLAN materials.

Why do students do NAPLAN tests?NAPLAN is the measure through which governments, education authorities, schools, teachers and parents can determine whether or not young Australians are meeting important educational outcomes in literacy and numeracy. The tests provide parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the tests. They also provide schools, states and territories with information about how education programs are working and what areas need to be improved.

NAPLAN tests are one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process; they do not replace the extensive ongoing assessments made by teachers about each student’s performance.

What will be tested and how?NAPLAN tests the sorts of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life, such as reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy. NAPLAN content is aligned with the Australian Curriculum. For more information on this, please see the NAP website: www.nap.edu.au

Questions are multiple-choice or require a short written response. The writing task requires students to write a text in response to a prompt.

To give you an idea of what the tests look like, sample questions and a sample writing task are available on the NAP website.

Who will run the tests?NAPLAN tests are conducted at schools and administered by classroom teachers, school deputies or principals. Each state and territory is responsible for marking the tests in accordance with strict guidelines and processes.

How can I help my child prepare for the tests?NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy skills that students have already been learning through the school curriculum. Teachers will ensure students are familiar with the test formats and will provide appropriate support and guidance.

Help your child prepare for NAPLAN by reassuring them that NAPLAN tests are just one part of their school program, and reminding them on the day to simply try their best. The use of services by coaching providers is not recommended.

If you have any questions about your child’s preparation for NAPLAN, you should make a time to speak with their teacher.

What additional support can schools provide for students with special needs? All students are encouraged to participate in NAPLAN tests. Students with disability may qualify for adjustments that reflect the support normally provided in the classroom. Students who have a temporary injury may also be reasonably accommodated.

A formal exemption may be granted for a student with significant intellectual disability and/or significant coexisting conditions, or for a student who has recently arrived in Australia and has a non-English speaking background.

Your school principal and your state testing authority can give you more information on special provisions or the process required to gain a formal exemption.

Page 13: Negin Nawabi and Taison Cassidy meeting Her Excellency ... · Lesley Brown Teacher Humanities and Social Sciences KIC Art Awards On Tuesday 28 February, a group of our young ... their

How is NAPLAN performance measured?NAPLAN is not a pass-or-fail type test. Individual student performance is shown on a national achievement scale for each test. Each test scale has 10 bands and all year levels are reported on the same scale. Six bands are reported for each year level for each test. One of these bands represents the national minimum standard for students at each year level. A result at the national minimum standard indicates that the student demonstrated the basic literacy and numeracy skills needed to participate fully in that year level. The performance of individual students can be compared to the average performance of all students in Australia.

What happens if my child is absent from school on test days?Where possible, schools will organise for individual students who are absent at the time of testing to complete missed tests at another time during the testing week. Individual students are not permitted to sit tests after Friday 12 May 2017.

Will I receive a report on my child’s performance?A NAPLAN report will be issued by your school later in the year. The same report format is used for every student in Australia. The school will notify you when the reports are being sent to you. If you do not receive a report, you should contact the school. Individual student results are strictly confidential.

How are NAPLAN test results used?• Schools use results to identify strengths and

weaknesses in teaching programs and to set goals in literacy and numeracy.

• School systems use results to review programs and support offered to schools.

• Students and parents may use individual results to discuss progress with teachers.

• Teachers use results to help them better identify students who require greater challenges or additional support.

• The community can see average school NAPLAN results on the My School website: www.myschool.edu.au

Where can I get more information? For more information about NAPLAN:

• visit the NAP website www.nap.edu.au

• contact your child’s school

• contact your state or territory’s education authority (details available on the NAP website).
