TIME FOR COMMUNITY SERVICE TO SHINE
TUESDAY, JULY 17, 2018, 7:00P.M.
Please be sure to attend our Community Service Night at the next Guild
meeting (July 17). We always have a good time. We will have quilts ready
to tie. Needles and yarn will be provided, you might want to bring a thimble
and maybe your small scissors (some scissors will be available too). It is
fun to sit with a group of your friends and tie a quilt. There will also be kits
to assemble. We have finished quilts that need to have bindings and labels
attached. Hopefully, if you bring your own sewing machine, you can assem-
ble a quilt from a pre-cut kit. And to top off the evening we will have ice
cream sundaes and sodas.
WORKSHOP: JULY 18TH, LAUREL ANDERSON
Silk Painting - We will play with silk scarves and learn to use frames, gutta, silk paint and salts. This class is a great head start on your Christmas list. Class fee $35

On June 7th, the RCQG Board met and discussed
the pros and cons regarding a change in the venue
and date for the 2019 RCQG Quilt Show. Everyone
at the meeting gave their concerns and/or their en-
thusiasm for the change. The President, Paulette
Trafecanty, then called out each position on the
Board, including the Executive Board, all the Commit-
tee chairs as well as all the Quilt Show Committees.
The total vote was 35 for the change and one
against. Therefore. . . .
We will be having our 2019 RCQG Quilt Show at
the McClellan Conference Center 5411 Luce Ave.,
McClellan, CA 95658, on the fourth weekend in
September (September 27-29).
Even though this may take a lot of work and plan-
ning, our volunteers are used to it and have consist-
ently put on a great show for the last 40 years.
In the meantime, we are planning an awesome show
for 2018 at the Scottish Rite Center. Please contact
Korey Chase, show chairperson, if you would like to
volunteer.
The Board truly feels that this is the best decision for
the future and welfare of the Guild.
Thank you,
Paulette Trafecanty, President, 2018

Chair Elect 2019
Hi all,
I want to thank all the members of the Board and Quilting
Committee for the June Board Meeting. Everyone that at-
tended expressed their thoughts and concerns about moving
our 2019 Quilt Show to McClellan Conference Center. It was
then voted on and passed. Thank you all for your support for
our wonderful Guild. It will be an exciting time for all of us.
And a nostalgic time for the 2018 Quilt Show as we say fare-
well to the Scottish Rite Temple.
And congratulations to all the winners at the California State
Fair. We are so proud of you. Call Chris Shores-Hague (916-
481-2032) to sign up to demonstrate at the Fair and get a
free ticket. What a fun and easy way to support your Guild!

Beginning cash $51,506.94
Incoming cash $5,611.05
Outgoing cash $10,501.34
Ending cash $46,616.65
Thank you for putting together the blocks for the
Community Service block-of-the month. Every little
(or big) contribution you make is appreciated and we
are able to deliver many quilts to the children in the
local hospitals. You do not need to make a whole
quilt in order to contribute; we realize your time is lim-
ited.
See you at the July meeting...we are looking forward
to it.

mendations who should receive this honor. Please take some
time to nominate someone who meets the following criteria:
Must be a current member in good standing, and active
at least 6 months prior to nomination
Must not previously have been the Featured Artist at an
RCQG show (as an individual contributor; if part of a
group exhibit, exceptions could be made)
Should show artistry and/or service to the guild that will
positively demonstrate the craft of quilting to the broader
community
Although Featured Artist is typically an individual, nomi-
nations can be made for groups (i.e. a family of quilters, a
collaborative group, etc.)
Please provide the member’s full name and describe why you
believe they should be the Featured Artist. (This will help the
committee make a selection in the event we are less familiar
with the nominee’s work.) Please email chris-
[email protected] with your recom-
mendations. I will also be collecting writ-
ten nominations at the July meeting.
The final deadline for nominations is Fri-
day July 20th.
Once recommendations are collected, a committee made up
of the 2019 Quilt Show Chair (Korey Chase), the Previous
Featured Artist (Kim Brownell), the current president ( Pau-
lette Trafecanty ) and myself as the committee chair will se-
lect the featured artist, with the goal of announcing the selec-
tion by the August meeting.
Thanks!

The Veterans’ Quilts Group meets the second Wednesday of
each month at Pat Weissensee's studio from 10:00a.m. -
3:00p.m.. Please bring your own lunch. I have heard recently
that there needs to be a change of date, but nobody has
come forward to me to suggest another time or day. I am
open to suggestions - day, evening, or?? What will help you

The RARE Bears Group meets the second Friday of each month at Meissner's Sewing and Vacuum from 10:00 -3:00. We always have a fun time and it's really fun to see the amazing bears people make. The bears go to children with rare diseases all over the world. I have received one letter with a picture of the child who received my very first bear and every time I look at it, I get the best feeling. Just register with Meissner's online or by phone so they can arrange where to seat us each month. Bring your lunch and sewing machine with regular supplies - we supply the fabrics or you can donate your own. Contact Pat Weissensee if you have any questions. Patricia Weissensee

2018 Quilt Show News Hard to believe that there are only five months till our 2018 Quilt Show. Everyone on all the different committees have
been working hard to ensure that everything goes on without issue. I would like to thank Kris Kerr for taking on the task
of coordinating the signage in the Scottish Rite Center so that our visitors know where all our quilts, vendors and demon-
strations are going to be. Rita Lauchli is going to be heading up our volunteer coordination so that everyone knows
where they are needed, and everything runs smoothly. Finally, Sue Kooiman has taken on the task of letting the press
know that our Quilt Show is going on and getting us the coverage needed to get the word out to the community to come
see the many beautiful quilts and the variety of vendors to shop with.
We are currently still in need of persons the take on the responsibility of making sure that our outdoor sign is up for eve-
ryone to see. Someone is needed to get the truck and coordinate with David Carter to transport all our equipment from
the storage unit and then back again. Lastly, we are still asking for someone to work with Chrissie Reiswig on the bou-
tique committee. If you are interested in helping with any of these positions, please contact Korey Chase at
[email protected] or call him at 916.508.6173. All help is greatly appreciated.
Just a reminder, we still have challenge fabric kits available for $5. If you would like to get your kit, please contact Linda
Bergman to get yours. If you need more of the challenge fabric, you can get additional yardage at Fabric Garden at the
corner of Fulton and Marconi, right behind the McDonalds.
I am so excited about this upcoming show and can’t wait to see everyone’s new name tag on the Name Tag Challenge
display. Check out the requirements on our web page or contact Diana Muenzler or Kelly Willie for more information.
Let us all see through your “Window of Imagination” this year!

Quilt Show Program Advertising Do you or your family own their business? Would you like cheap advertising? I know how you can do that.
You may do so by advertising your business in this year’s Quilt Show program. Contact Lori Wisheropp by email or
phone (consult your directory.) She will give you all the details. You must do so by the end of August or beginning of
September so she has time to fit it into the program layout. The fees vary according to the ad size and are very reasona-
ble. My husband and I own our business and plan on submitting an ad. It would be great to know who does have their
own business and we could support each other.

Quilt Show Silent Auction Returns! Once again, our Quilt Show will include a Silent Auction! For those of you who don’t remember this category, the Silent Auction allows our members to sell completed items, giving a minimum allowed bid, separate from the Country Store. Usual items displayed for sale would be quilts of all sizes, wearable art, purses and bags. Each item is given a number and a bidding sheet is prepared, with your minimum bid shown. It’s a lot of fun to watch the competition on those items throughout the three days of the show! Personally, I’ve won some of those auctions, and I love and use those quilts throughout my home. Some of them have gone as gifts to friends, and they love them even knowing I didn’t make them myself. Entry forms are being prepared for you now. The requirements are simple:
1. Entry forms must be turned in before October 1;
2. Quilted items must be turned in to the show at the same time as all other exhibited quilts.
3. You must work at least one 2-hour shift at the Auction;
4. The Guild receives 10% of your sale. Won’t you join me at the Silent Auction this year? Dee Irwin, Silent Auction Committee Chair
Spotlight on Kim Brownell, 2018 Featured Artist! For our 2018 Quilt Show, Window of Imagination, RCQG member Kim Brownell was selected as the Featured Artist. She
has been a member of our guild since 2000, and has consistently shown her creativity, commitment to the Guild, and
willingness to mentor others to learn to sew or to learn new techniques.
If you've seen Kim's work over the years, you know that she usually enters several small quilts into the annual show. Kim
prefers to work on anything that finishes smaller than 36", and often shrinks down designs/patterns to work on something
in miniature! She's highly influenced by nature and animals. In fact, right now she's designing her own applique patterns
inspired by some of her favorite animals.
Kim has said before that her quilts are deceptively easy. Many look intricate, but the techniques she uses are targeted to
finishing projects quickly in order to provide that feeling of creativity and accomplishment. She's always willing to share
ideas and teach workshops.
In selecting the items she'll be displaying at the show, Kim wants to showcase the five aspects of quilting that she feels

are the keys to her quilt journey:
1. Dream
2. Learn
3. Create
4. Fun
5. Inspire
You'll be able to see examples of her work in each of these categories at the Quilt Show in November. Make sure to tell
all your friends to come to the show and check out her full collection! In the meantime, you can read Kim's full bio and
see several samples of her work on the guild's website: http://www.rivercityquilters.org/featured-artist.html

Boutique Donations Thank you all for the great donations you've been sharing! We have plenty of baskets, so no need to go out and look for more, though I will still take straggler containers if you have earmarked them for the boutique. Items to fill the baskets are still needed, especially items that are non-quilt related that would make our men, children, and random show at-tendees drool (food, sports, animals, kid stuff, guy stuff, wine, movies, etc.). Please keep the great donations coming! And of course, if you'd like to donate a fully completed basket ready to raffle (value ~$20) or work with your mini-group to donate a "featured" basket to stay on display all weekend, those are always welcome. Deadlines: * Individual items and empty containers can be donated through the September meeting. * Finished complete baskets are due at the October meeting. Finally, I've scheduled a few events that I'll be looking for volunteers to sign up to help, so check your calendars before the next guild meeting: Saturday October 6: Basket-making party at my house in Orangevale, 10am-until finished Come help pick through the stash to design, inventory, and decorate baskets that will be raffled off during the Quilt Show. Sit-down and stand-up jobs available. Saturday October 27: Ticket prep party at my house in Orangevale, 10am -2pm (ish) To make the winner's process more efficient, we'll be numbering tickets ahead of time. These are all sit-down jobs, but you must be able to handle the smell of a sharpie. (woohoo!) Drop off your items at the Boutique table at each meeting, and let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks!

Boutique Chair Needed For 2019
I've decided to step down as Boutique Chair for the 2019 show. I've got all the info for how to coordinate this important
part of the quilt show documented and ready, but if you're a hands-on learner the best time to get involved is starting in
August. That is then that I'll be pulling the committee together to create baskets and prepare for the show week-
end. This job is fun and really easy if you get enough helpers involved. Please contact me if you're interested in taking it
on next year.
Thanks,

Quilt Show Extra: Name Tag Challenge The purpose of the Name Tag Challenge is to encourage the members to make a name tag that is worn at monthly
Guild meetings. The Name Tag Challenge entries will be displayed at the 2018 Quilt Show “Windows of Imagination”.
The Quilt Show Entry Form has been revised and a Name Tag Challenge category was added. A judging fee is not re-
quired, nor will the name tag entry be counted as one of an entrant’s six entries. It will be necessary for you to complete
a 2018 Quilt Show Entry Form for the Name Tag Challenge and submit it on September 18, 2018 with your other Quilt
Show Entry Forms. Your finished Name Tag must be delivered on November 14, 2018 to the Scottish Rite Masonic Cen-
ter with your other Quilt Show entries. Please remember to attach the Entry Label to the back of the Name Tag.
The Name Tag Challenge instructions are as follows:
size must be 4” x 6”;
note the maker’s first name only,
made with fabric;
surface additions such as embellishments and/or mixed media are okay;
consist of three layers;
quilted (by hand or machine or both);
closed along the edges; and
includes a fastener such a pin, neck strap or magnet.
The Quilt Show Judges will be tasked with selecting their favorite four Name Tags. The four winners will receive a rib-
bon.

If we want to sell raffle tickets for our Opportunity Quilt at Quilting in the Garden, Livermore, we need to provide names of 4 volunteers for Sat., Sept 22 and 4 for Sun., Sept 23 IN ORDER TO HOLD OUR PLACE. Submission of this list is required for our entry.
If you've never been, check out the You Tube video and the Alden Lane Nursery website. It looks wonderful.
Last year we sold over $360 worth of tickets at this event so please let me know ASAP if you plan on attending.
These four volunteers per day will be setting up and taking down the exhibit quilts so we will also need help setting up our own booth and filling it with smiling salespeople. If anyone is interested in staying in a nearby hotel on Saturday night, please let me know.

A GOOD TIME WAS HAD BY ALL! In May we had a terrific presentation by Katie Pasquini Masopust. KPM then had a two day workshop, From “Watercolor to Quilt”. It was well attended and I solicited comments from various attendees as it was a popular class.
Diana Muenzler said the following: “Katie Pasquini's Guild presentation of her and other textile artists quilts was really inspiring! Katie's 2-day workshop was really great! The first day was really intense because she wanted the participants to learn and experience a variety of abstract art techniques, and then pick one that we wanted to use as our template to create a unique art quilt. At the end of the first day of class, Katie (with the assistance of Sandra Torguson) took all of the class participants "mini" (3"x5") quilt templates to a printer/copier to enlarge them to approximately 2'x3'. Every partici-pant received 2 copies on the second day: 1 to use as a whole-copy template and the other to cut up. The second day was more relaxing as all the participants were busy creating their own unique fabric art. It was amazing to see the variety of art quilts being created in the class. I'm about 1/3 finished with my piece. Katie was a great teacher and I would most certainly take another class from her in the future”. Nancy Causey added that “Katie’s class was fabulous! It was a great two days well spent. I think everyone had a great time. She is a joy to be around and for those of you who did not take the class you missed a great time”. Marion Emerson also attended and said “Katie Pasquini Masopust’s "From Watercolor to Quilt" workshop taught me fun & simple ways to play with watercolors.. She took the fear out of painting and made it fun by using bubbles, gravity, stamps, rubber cement and ink. I picked a portion of one of the “masterpieces” which she enlarged; and that is now on my design wall. By using her quilting techniques, I can make an abstract art quilt with organic shapes that flow like water. Also, a more spacious venue was rented as quilters came from far and wide for her class. It was an inspirational location with an enclosed patio for our lunch breaks. Well worth the extra cost to rent”. Tracey List swung by the workshop and snapped a few pics:

else attending. (It was great – just like a quilt show, but with no quilts and lots more men.) The first day of the conference, Tracey sat down at a lecture called “RootsMagic; Publishing and Sharing,” and who should be sitting next to her – Joanna Schwilk from Guild! There is definitely overlap between genealogy and quilting. Just ask Mary Jane Motter, Jane Magaw, or Pat Miljarak, among others.
Big thanks to Diana, Nancy, Marion, and Tracey for writing my column this month. I couldn’t make it to the June meeting but watch out, I will be back next month with my clipboards. And July is the community service meeting…ice cream…yummy...I hope to see you there. Submitted by Kathy Mitchell [email protected]

Artist’s Statement
Denise Oyama Miller, working on a project “I have always
found joy in making things with my hands and I am constant-
ly inspired by just the existence of materials to work with and
what I see around me. I am interested in the patterns of
shapes, colors, textures, and the interplay of lights and
darks. I love the challenge of taking an idea from one of my
inspirations and interpreting it in fabric and/or water media.
As I travel, I always keep journals for recording what I see
and ideas for future artwork in fabric and paint. The chal-
lenge of taking an idea from inspiration to artwork is thrilling.”
Workshop: Oct. 17th, Broken Glass, class fee $35

alchemist, and purveyor of inspiration, helping others chan-
nel creativity on a daily basis. I’m an International award-
winning mixed-media textile artist and author, who travels
globally to teach painting and mixed-media techniques and
lecture about my creative process and sources of inspira-
tion. I received my BFA in graphic design from The Otis Art
Institute of Parsons School of Design, but found my true
passion when I began working with textiles. One part gypsy
and two parts visual alchemist, I travel to new places, open-
ing up new realms of possibilities for my students by reveal-
ing endless ways to combine paint, paper and metal with
fabric and the sources of inspiration we all too often over-
look in our immediate worlds.
