A Family of
Believers called to proclaim the good
news of God’s reconciling love.
NOVEMBER 2013 Dear People of St. Olaf, Thank you so much for all the kind gestures and the support that you sent my way over the last three months. I deeply appreciated your prayers, the many cards, and the visits. They were critical in helping me to relax and to heal! I was also grateful for the love and the support that you showed to pastor Thea in my absence. She reported that she very much enjoyed her time here and that the members of the church and staff were very helpful to her. For my part, I was so happy that she was there to cover all the bases and that the rest of the staff was able to continue on in their own jobs with-out missing a beat. Recovery from this surgery was very dif-ferent than I anticipated it would be. I had no idea that it would be nearly as lengthy or that I would find myself so in-capacitated. I ended up with a lot of time to just think. At times that was not so wonderful, but at other times it was very productive. I spent some of it thinking about who I am, what I do, and what I want to do. Normally I am not one to remember my dreams, but during my last month of recu-
peration I actually began to dream about leading worship! I found myself missing all of you and these things led to a deeper ap-preciation for the ministry we do at St. Olaf. What it comes down to is that we all need reminders of the blessings we have. I needed to be reminded that I am the pastor at a church of wonderful folks. I needed to learn that I am mortal and, at times, very fragile and in need of sabbath time. Hopefully these reflections will help me to be a better pastor. I am grateful to God that I am once again back at work. Please understand that I am still unable to do lifting and am supposed to limit my bending and twisting, and will continue to be for some time to come. But I am back, and many thanks for the warm welcome you have extended to me.
Peace, Pr.Jeff

WELCA Report
Thank you so much to all those who helped with the fall rummage sale. It takes a lot of work behind the scenes to accomplish the event. It appeared to be a fun day for all who attended. WELCA will meet at 1:30 p.m. Thurs-day, Nov. 8th for Bible study and the program will be given by Russ Pear-son on the Lutheran Book of Worship (Anna Circle). Hostess for November is Deborah Circle. The yearly thank offering will be taken at the November meeting. This goes to the many ministries of the Women of the ELCA. Lefse making is scheduled for Mon-days: Oct. 28, Nov. 4 & 18, at 9:00 a.m. Please come if you are interested in learning to roll or fry lefse. Our qual-ity control group also has a good time and an important job of cooking and packaging the lefse. The Christmas Bazaar is set for Sat-urday, Dec. 7, 2013, from 8:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. There will be morning coffee with goodies and a mid-day meal starting at 11:00 a.m. Please read the insert for important information about the shops. Thank you to everyone who will help with this in any way. We encourage families with children to come Friday, Dec. 6th at 5:00 p.m. to help package the bake shop items.
Quilting continues each Tuesday morning at 9:00 a.m. Anyone inter-ested is invited to come and see the results of cutting and sewing all kinds of material. These quilts are shared with local organizations and with our church missions. Our on-going food bank shelf in the Centennial Room has been a suc-cess. We will continue this along with the Thanksgiving special food drive.

In the future Lay Ministry will continue to meet the Sun-day before the church council meeting. In the past we have thought about ways we could reach out to our home- bound church members. Stella pre-sented a card that she had made up that could be sent out to home bound members. Pastor Thea suggested that

in addition to the card a follow up phone call be made if there was no response to the letter. We spent some time think-ing of members that we could contact. I had asked Pastor Thea to sit in on the Lay Ministry meeting and to do a little brain storming. One of the observa-tions that Thea made was that the job description for the committee was writ-ten up in 2004 and that it had not been reviewed since. She felt these job de-scriptions should be reviewed to see what ideas are working and what is not
working and what needs to be changed. This type of review could be done an-nually with the pastor. The church council may also need to be involved with changes. Ron Miller was elected to be vice chair of the Lay Ministry Com-mittee. This appointment had been an oversight in past. Florene did 1 home communion and made 2 visits at the nursing home. Delores and Stella made 3 home visits. Ray had made 3 nursing home visits. WELCA report was submitted by Florene. Men’s Club will be having their Lutefisk and meatball supper on Oct 20th. Submitted by Ray Sletteland. WELCA: Sept & Oct report: The Bible study was led by Jamie Travers at the Sept 5th meeting. Judy Ovre from the Miriam Circle presented the History of Cookies and their circle served a vari-ety of them for lunch. Pastor Thea Monson led the Bible study at the Octo-ber 4th meeting and Prisca Circle was in charge of the program and lunch. Jane Liska told of the many services pro-vided by Lutheran Social Services Healthy Families. Doughnuts were made Sept. 19th for the rummage sale to be held October 12th. On Sept 23rd and 25th lefse was made for the lutefisk and meatball supper. The Eastern ND WELCA Convention was Sept 21st at Sharon Lutheran Church in Grand Forks. Stewardship met Oct 7th, 2013. Pre-sent: Mary Jane Stubbe, Carol Rohr, Sheldon Severtson, Tom Wade. Devo-tions were a prayer of thanks. Fall stewardship program has begun with 2 Sundays remaining. The theme “Found Faithful” was introduced by letters sent to every household. Also used themed bulletin covers and 4 weekly bulletin inserts and temple talks. We encour-age everyone to fill out the commitment card and return to the church office. Next meeting is Sunday Nov. 10th at 9:30. Mary Jane Stubbe. Worship and Music: no report. Old Business: Council members who attended the insurance meeting pre-sented by Bishop Rindy and a rep from Portico gave their recommendation of going with the synod’s recommendation which was the Gold plan for uniformity within the synod and portability for the pastors. It is the closest to the plan we have had in the past. In the past premi-ums were based on locality and salary. Age has now also been added as a factor in determining premium. This covers Pastor Jeff and Jamie. New Business: United Blood services have contact Loretta about the Novem-ber Blood Drive on Nov 11th & 12th. MaryJo, Ray and Loretta will do the calling.
