Nedsky AlburquerqueDo you know what is like for a parent to see their baby critically ill and the hope to save him lessens with each passing day? I want to share an amazing story with you. At only three months old doctors in the Dominican Republic diagnosed Nedksy with Atresia & Shortgut Syndrome; a condition in which his body was not able to absorb enough nutrients because part of his small intestines were missing. Running out of options and in fear of losing their baby, his parents reached out to International Kids Fund for help. With the assistance from the Administrative Ministry of the President of the Dominican Republic, Nedsky was transferred to Miami via air ambulance and immediately taken to Holtz Children’s Hospital where he was admitted to the PICU. On May 2, 2014 he underwent a successful surgery to correct a malrotation of the intestines. This little miracle as we call him surprised everyone with his remarkable progress going from 4 lbs. upon arrival to 21lbs today; however, his journey is not over. Little Nedsky has undergone several procedures for his condition and will still need further care. You have made it possible for him to come this far, please continue to give this baby the chance for a healthy and happy future.

Doctor HighlightPatrick Owens, M.D.

Dr. Patrick Owens knows that children can be intimidated by going to the doctor or hospital, so he came up with a solution: a kid-friendly bowtie. For 8-year-old Krishawn Greaves’ recent visit, Owens wore a gold bowtie dotted with red, green and black dinosaurs.Owens, chief of the Division of Hand Surgery at the UM/Jackson Memorial Medical Center, recently performed surgery on Krishawn, who lives in Bridgetown, Barbados. He was brought to Holtz Children’s Hospital by the International Kids Fund Wonderfund to correct congenital deformities in his hands. The right hand had four fingers and no thumb, and the left hand had four digits and a floppy appendage in place of the thumb. During reconstructive surgery, Owens moved the index finger into the position of the thumb on both hands. Ten days after surgery, Owens said Krishawn could wiggle his thumb and bring the tips of his finger and thumb together. “Instead of grabbing over things (to pick them up,)” Owens explained, “he can grab around them.” Krishawn, a polite little boy, is also able to draw pictures, write at a speed comparable to other children and play games – things that he couldn’t do before the surgery. Seeing Krishawn’s progress so soon after surgery reinforces Owens’ reason for returning to Jackson Memorial

Hospital in 2001. A graduate of the University of South Alabama College of Medicine, he completed his internship and residency programs at the hospital. “I wanted to come back here to take care of the people,” he said. “One of the things I enjoy most in surgery is trauma. It’s taking the thing that is broken and putting it back together again to make it whole and functional.”In pediatric patients, Owens said the most common surgeries are for web fingers and trigger fingers. For adults, he has treated arthritis, carpel tunnel syndrome, fractures, infections and tumors. He has also re-attached severed hands and digits. A year ago, a neighbor accidentally cut off his thumb through the first joint while working with an electric saw in the garage. He called Owens over and showed him the injury. Owens wrapped his hand, found the thumb on the saw and called 911. The operator instructed Owens to preserve the severed thumb by wrapping it in moist gauze; placing it in a Ziploc bag; and putting the bag on ice. Owens spent more than six hours reattaching his neighbor’s thumb. After surgery, he used medicinal leeches because circulation in the thumb was poor. The leeches serve as an artificial vein by sucking away congested blood until the patient can grow back small venous capillaries. “The pressure was on,” he said. “I had to make it work.” Today, Owens is proud to report that there is barely a trace of the injury. “Where I am now is a product of trying and working to get better at all kinds

of things,” Owens said. “I am certainly better now than I was 10 years ago and hope to be better 10 years from now.”Owens developed an interest in hand surgery after a lecture by a famous hand surgeon. “He had a passion for what he did and talked about the anatomy of how things are put together. He made it the most interesting part of the anatomy class,” Owens said.A native of Tallahassee, Owens can trace his family’s roots in North Florida to the 1820s. He grew up attending college football games and remains a fan. Owens is married and has two young children. He enjoys biking, running and gardening (tomatoes and the first crop of bananas.) Although he uses an electric saw to build things for his house, Owens said he is overly cautious and uses devices that clamp the wood in place. The professor who inspired Owens instilled a passion in him that is event when he supervises residents and fellows. “This is the coolest job ever,” he said. “Hands are with us for the rest of our life. Anything that goes wrong, affects our ability to do our job.”

STORY BY CHERYL BERRY

Page 11: Nedsky Alburquerque - Jackson Health Foundation · Over 300 guests and philanthropists came together at this year’s Circle of Heroes Luncheon as we celebrated the many lives saved,

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a painful condition of the hand and fingers that occurs when the median nerve, which runs from the forearm into the palm of the hand, becomes pressed or squeezed at the wrist. The condition causes numbness, tingling, burning and weakness in the hand.

Factors that contribute to carpal tunnel syndrome:• Heredity • Gender - women with small wrists • Repetitive motions, such as typing or playing a

musical instrument • Age - mostly older people• Medical conditions, such as diabetes, thyroid gland

imbalance and rheumatoid arthritis• Hormonal changes during pregnancy

To reduce the risk of getting carpal tunnel syndrome and tendonitis, Dr. Patrick Owens recommends:• Placing the keyboard in a comfortable position with

the mouse at the same level for easy reach.• Taking a 5- to 10-minute break every hour from

repetitive tasks. During the break, move around and stretch. First, extend arms backward and turn the head side to side. Next, extend one arm forward, palm down and pull back the hand. Repeat with the other hand.

• Getting outdoors for some form of physical exercise to stimulate brain health and heart health.

“Listen to your body,” said Owens. “If it’s complaining, you should listen to it and take some steps to avoid that pain or break it up.”

Did You Know
