Mrs. Bonnie Turner - Roswell, Georgia
Our first Elkhound came to us more by default than an actively sought pet for our family in 1973.
Assuming we could never afford one from a breeder, we checked a pet shop for a puppy. I found one I
loved running around on the floor of the shop. Within a few minutes the puppy was scooped up and out
the door with its new owners. I noticed another I thought was “cute” and our first Elkhound came home
with us. Growing up with Albert Payson Terhune books (Lad, A Dog just one of many), I had spent my
childhood dreaming of showing dogs. It took me but a few matches to realize our dog was not going to
make it as a show dog no matter how much we loved him.
Our first show dog came from Paul and Nina Ross (Misty Tara) of Memphis, TN. This dog’s pedigree was
very much Crafdal which I then blended with Norwegian import stock (Mari Misbeek, Camalot) and in
later years blended my line in a limited way with several of the well-known lines. I did a number of co-
breedings with dear friend, Jane Morris (Nord-Vann) and together we produced the number 1 Norwegian
Elkhound dog for 1993 and 1994, owner handled by me. Roundel breedings have produced multiple
Specialty Best-In-Show winners, Group winners, National Specialty BOB, BOS and AOM winners.
Roundel littermates have also won WD, WB at one of NEAA’s Nationals. Dogs that I have bred/shown
have always gotten their awards from the Bred-By Exhibitor class. I feel this class is THE most important
class and where judges should find the deepest quality.
In dog related areas I have served in a local kennel club in every office save one. Show Chairman was a
challenge that I enjoyed immensely and I even spent a few years cooking for 100 people at our shows.
For 10 years I was the lobbyist at the Georgia state capitol in an effort to prevent the Animal Rights people
from dominating our dog ownership laws. The Georgia Canine Coalition has also been held up as a model
around the country for its success with both forging a bond with the ARers and the state’s legislators. I was
one of the authors of Georgia’s Felony Animal Cruelty bills which charges those guilty of intentional
torture, maiming or killing of an animal with a felony and this bill has been used as a model in legislatures
around the United States. In the time after September 11, 2001 when SAR dogs had no food, water or place
for them and their handlers to stay, the AKC stepped in and provided for these heroes. To raise money for
a new fund AKC established for these dogs, bronze statues were commissioned and sold. I succeeded in
getting a resolution passed to place one of these statues in front of Georgia’s Department of Agriculture
where it stands to this day as a gift to the state in honor of our valiant dogs and their owners.
I was very proud to serve on the board of the Norwegian Elkhound Association of America. I filled the
offices of Board, Corresponding Secretary, Vice-President and President. I am currently the writer of the
Norwegian Elkhound column for the AKC Gazette. I was a feature writer for Showsite magazine and
recently wrote an article on judging the Elkhound for Canine Chronicle.
I have been an AKC approved judge of Norwegian Elkhounds and Junior Showmanship since 2003. I am
currently working on approval for Afghan Hounds, Eskimo Dogs and Samoyeds.
I often think of that day in the pet shop and wonder at my good fortune to have chosen the breed I adore. I
cannot imagine my life without an Elkhound in it. Jane Morris and I have often joked about “what you love
about this breed is what you hate about them”. Stubborn, spiteful, too independent, are all on the list, but
so is absolute loving companion that not only sees into but well knows how to get into your heart.

Mr. Jean Tremblay, Stony Point ON
I have been in the sport of dogs since my teens in the mid ‘70s. My family bred black and harlequin
Great Danes and Toy Manchester Terriers. I was bitten with the show and breeding bug soon after
our first big win with a black bitch handled by pro handler, Dora Ann Collins. It was through Dora
Ann and her husband that I met my first elkhound, as they showed for Maude Bicknell.
In the mid ‘80s I was blessed to meet and eventually become partner with L Garrett Lambert.
Garrett had many elkhound friends including Liz Sykes and Paul Woito. These passionate
competitors and committed breeders were more than willing to share their vision of the breed and to
discuss it at length. There are no better teachers then those who can see, dissect, critique and plan
with eyes wide open. I was lucky to be able to glean from that knowledge.
Through the years I have been blessed as a handler to have some quality elkhounds that have done
very well at specialties and all breed shows entrusted in my care to show and train. As a breeder I
have bred and owned 76 Canadian and 19 American champion Cavaliers.
The learning continues and I look forward to applying that as your Sweepstakes judge.
If you are coming to show your Great Gray Elkhound, in the Sault in May, this is for you!!
If you are coming, it is because you rather like your elkie, and you rather like showing your elkie. That is
a good thing.
In order to keep being able to show your elkies at a Canadian National, or Booster, we need your help.
Just like everything else it all boils down to money. Your club needs money to put on a good show.
Unfortunately there are not a lot of us left showing these wonderful dogs. So, just the entry fee doesn’t
support the show.
We have an easy way for you to help support your club and have fun doing it. Just bring some little, or
big item or items, to raffle off during our dinner. Items do not have to be elkhound related, but those
are nice too.
We will put all items on the raffle table; each item will have a sheet of paper next to it. It you like the
item you can simply put your name down with the amount you are willing to spend on the item. Others
may want the same item and they can add their name with a new bigger total. We will set a time to end
the auction. The last name on each sheet will be that items winner. We will then collect the money and
hopefully have enough to help hold more boosters and nationals to show off our wonderful Norwegian
Elkhounds.
So, please support our club and bring something wonderful!! See you in May. Hope the snow is melted
by then!!!!
