We are requesting that these changes be effective autumn semester 2019. Following is a summary of the changes to the two programs: Animal Sciences (AS) – Horse Specialization A horse handling requirement for students completing this major program was added – a new course (ANMLTEC 2800T) was developed to provide a handling experience for novice students; this course, or the more advanced equitation course (ANMLTEC 2801T) are required (rather than an elective option), and the number of technical elective credits was reduced accordingly to accommodate the additional requirement. The ability to work safely with horses meets a critical learning goal for this program. A course in marketing and management (ANMLTEC 3101) was split into two courses (ANMLTEC 3101.01 and 3101.02) to take advantage of seasonality of learning experiences. There was no net change in credit hours as a result, but this realignment of courses will provide a more realistic learning opportunity for students. Horse Production and Management (AAS) In addition to the two changes outlined for the Animal Sciences (AS) – Horse Specialization above, additional options to meet the business course requirement in the Applied General Education component of the degree were added to provide students a choice between courses that will most closely align with their career plans. The corresponding course sequences for the major programs were realigned to distribute the course load and provide students a sequence of courses that build upon knowledge and skill in a logical progression. These changes are proposed to better meet the needs and interests of the students, and develop skills that are in increasing demand in industry. These proposals were reviewed and approved by the College Academic Affairs Committee. Please let me know if any additional information is needed in support of this request. Steve

Randy, The College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences is requesting Council on AcademicAffairs approval for revision of the undergraduate Animal Sciences (AS) – Horse Specialization majorand the Horse Production and Management (AAS) major offered at the Agricultural TechnicalInstitute (see attached proposals).  We are requesting that these changes be effective autumnsemester 2019.  Following is a summary of the changes to the two programs: Animal Sciences (AS) – Horse Specialization

A horse handling requirement for students completing this major program was added – a newcourse (ANMLTEC 2800T) was developed to provide a handling experience for novicestudents; this course, or the more advanced equitation course (ANMLTEC 2801T) are required(rather than an elective option), and the number of technical elective credits was reducedaccordingly to accommodate the additional requirement. The ability to work safely withhorses meets a critical learning goal for this program.A course in marketing and management (ANMLTEC 3101) was split into two courses(ANMLTEC 3101.01 and 3101.02) to take advantage of seasonality of learning experiences. There was no net change in credit hours as a result, but this realignment of courses willprovide a more realistic learning opportunity for students.

     Horse Production and Management (AAS)

In addition to the two changes outlined for the Animal Sciences (AS) – Horse Specializationabove, additional options to meet the business course requirement in the Applied GeneralEducation component of the degree were added to provide students a choice betweencourses that will most closely align with their career plans.

The corresponding course sequences for the major programs were realigned to distribute the courseload and provide students a sequence of courses that build upon knowledge and skill in a logicalprogression.  These changes are proposed to better meet the needs and interests of the students,and develop skills that are in increasing demand in industry. These proposals were reviewed and approved by the College Academic Affairs Committee.  Pleaselet me know if any additional information is needed in support of this request. Steve

November 30, 2018 Dr. Steve Neal Associate Dean for Academic Programs 100J Agricultural Administration Building 2120 Fyffe Rd Columbus, OH 43210 Dear Dr. Neal, Enclosed please find the proposed revision to the curriculum plan and course sequence for the Associate of Science Animal Sciences Horse (HRS) specialization submitted for consideration by the FAES Academic Affairs Committee. The proposed revisions to the current program were developed by the equine faculty at Ohio State ATI and in consult with equine faculty in the Department of Animal Sciences. The addition of a new course and change in another course to a two-course sequence will improve the educational experience of students in the Animal Sciences AS, Horse program. The proposed revisions for the specialization are:

    • ANMLTEC 2801T, Horsemanship and Equitation moved from a technical elective option to a required course as a choice between this course and ANMLTEC 2800T, Basic Horsemanship (new course that has been developed and submitted for university approval). With the current curriculum plan, a student could graduate in the major without completing a course in horse handling. To be eligible for ANMLTEC 2801T, students are required to pass a skills assessment; and the equine faculty observed an increasing number of students enrolling in the program without the skill level necessary to pass the skills test. The addition of the new course, which will provide ground handling experience for novice students, and the movement of the two-course option to required will ensure all students graduating from this major have horse handling experience as part of their curriculum (plus 2-3 credits)

    • ANMLTEC 3101T, Equine Marketing and Facility Management split into two courses (ANMLTEC 3101.01T, Equine Marketing – new course that has been developed and submitted for university approval – and 3101.02T, Equine Facility Management – course change that has been submitted for university approval). This results in courses that can be offered during times of the year that will capitalize on opportunities within the industry and the university facilities to provide authentic student learning activities and experiences (no net change in credits).

    • Technical Electives reduced from 5 credits to 2-3 credits. The technical elective credit requirement depends on whether the student takes ANMLTEC 2800T (2 credits, requiring 3 credits of Technical Electives) or ANMLTEC 2801T (3 credits, requiring 2 credits of Technical Electives). (minus 2-3 credits)

    • No net change in credit hours for the degree

The proposed changes to the current curriculum plan and course sequence for the Associate of Science Animal Sciences Horse (HRS) specialization were approved by the Agricultural and Engineering Technologies Division at Ohio State ATI and the Ohio State ATI Academic Affairs committee. Ohio State ATI is committed to protecting the academic progress of students. This program change will not disrupt progress toward degree for students enrolled in this degree program. Course substitutions and manual management of the degree audits will occur as

  • needed for students enrolled in this degree program during the transition. When appropriate, coursework completed by students under the current degree program will be utilized for completion of the proposed degree program. Enclosed please find the following documents:

    • Current curriculum plans and course sequence for the Associate of Science Animal Sciences Horse (HRS) specialization

    • Proposed curriculum plans and course sequences for the Associate of Science Animal Sciences Horse (HRS) specialization

Please let me know if there are questions, or if additional information or documentation is required to accompany this submission. We look forward to hearing from the FAES Academic Affairs Committee regarding next steps in the approval process. Sincerely, Jeanne M. Osborne Assistant Director, Academic Affairs

The proposed revisions for the specialization are:

    • The Business course requirement in the Applied General Education was changed to include a choice of three courses (from a 1 course option) to provide additional flexibility to students and give them the opportunity to select a business course that aligns with their intended career plans. Proposed options include:

o BUSTEC 2232T, Personal Selling o BUSTEC 2241T, Small Business Management o BUSTEC 2244T, Human Resource Management and Leadership

Students will not be permitted to double count BUSTEC 2232T as both a Business Elective and Technical Elective. (no net change in credits)

    • ANMLTEC 2801T, Horsemanship and Equitation added as part of a two-course option (ANMLTEC 2800T, Basic Horsemanship - new course that has been developed and submitted for university approval – or 2801T, Horsemanship and Equitation) to the required Technical Studies courses. The addition of the new course, which will provide ground handling experience for novice students, and the movement of the two-course option to required will ensure all students graduating from this major have horse handling experience as part of their curriculum. ANMLTEC 2801T continues as a Technical Elective option, but students will not be permitted to double count this course to meet the Technical Studies requirement and fulfill the Technical Electives requirement (plus 2-3 credits)

  • • Technical Electives reduced from 5 credits to 2-3 credits. The technical elective credit requirement depends on whether the student takes ANMLTEC 2800T (2 credits, requiring 3 credits of Technical Electives) or ANMLTEC 2801T (3 credits, requiring 2 credits of Technical Electives). (minus 2-3 credits)

    • No net change in credit hours for the degree The proposed changes to the current curriculum plan and course sequence for the Associate of Applied Science Horse Production and Management were approved by the Agricultural and Engineering Technologies Division at Ohio State ATI and the Ohio State ATI Academic Affairs committee. Ohio State ATI is committed to protecting the academic progress of students. This program change will not disrupt progress toward degree for students enrolled in this degree program. Course substitutions and manual management of the degree audits will occur as needed for students enrolled in this degree program during the transition. When appropriate, coursework completed by students under the current degree program will be utilized for completion of the proposed degree program. Enclosed please find the following documents:

    • Proposed curriculum plans and course sequences for the Associate of Applied Science Horse Production and Management

Please let me know if there are questions, or if additional information or documentation is required to accompany this submission. We look forward to hearing from the FAES Academic Affairs Committee regarding next steps in the approval process. Sincerely, Jeanne M. Osborne Assistant Director, Academic Affairs

November 30, 2018 Dr. Steve Neal Associate Dean for Academic Programs 100J Agricultural Administration Building 2120 Fyffe Rd Columbus, OH 43210 Dear Dr. Neal, Enclosed please find the proposed revision to the curriculum plan and course sequence for the Associate of Applied Science Horse Production and Management submitted for consideration by the FAES Academic Affairs Committee. The proposed revisions to the current program were developed by the equine faculty at Ohio State ATI and in consult with equine faculty in the Department of Animal Sciences. The addition of a new course and change in another course to a two-course sequence will improve the educational experience of students in the Horse Production and Management AAS program.
