The Star Spangled Banner Oh, say, can you see, by the dawn's early light, What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watch'd, were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof thro' the night that our flag was still there. O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave? O, thus be it ever when freemen shall stand, Between their lov'd homes and the war's desolation; Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the heav'n-rescued land Praise the Pow'r that hath made and preserv'd us as a nation! Then conquer we must, when our cause is just, And this be our motto: "In God is our trust" And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

God Bless America God bless America, land that I love, Stand beside her, and guide her, Through the night with a light from above. From the mountains, to the prairies, To the oceans, white with foam, God bless America, my home sweet home, God bless America, my home sweet home

6

America the Beautiful O beautiful for spacious skies For amber waves of grain, For purple mountain majesties Above the fruited plain America! America! God shed his grace on thee, And crown thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea! O beautiful for patriot dream That sees beyond the years Thine alabaster cities gleam, Undimmed by human tears! America! America! God shed His grace on thee, And crown thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea!

America My country! ‘Tis of thee, Sweet land of liberty, Of thee I sing; Land where my fathers died, Land of the pilgrims’ pride, From ev’ry mountain side Let freedom ring. My native country, thee, Land of the noble free, Thy name I love; I love thy rocks and rills, Thy woods and templed hills, My heart with rapture thrills Like that above.

Anchors Aweigh

Stand, Navy, out to sea, Fight our battle cry; We'll never change our course, So vicious foe steer shy-y-y-y. Roll out the TNT, Anchors Aweigh. Sail on to victory And sink their bones to Davy Jones, hooray! Anchors Aweigh, my boys, Anchors Aweigh. Farewell to college joys, we sail at break of day-ay-ay-ay. Through our last night on shore, drink to the foam, Until we meet once more, Here's wishing you a happy voyage home.

You’re a Grand Old Flag You're a grand old flag, You're a high flying flag, And forever in peace may you wave. You're the emblem of the land I love, The home of the free and the brave. Ev'ry heart beats true 'Neath the Red, White and Blue. Where there's never a boast or a brag. But should auld acquaintance be forgot, Keep your eyes on the grand old flag!

On My Honor On my honor, I'll do my best, To do my duty to God. On my honor, I'll do my best, To serve my country as I may. On my honor, I'll do my best, To to my Good Turn each day. To keep my body strengthened, And keep my mind awakened. To follow paths of righteousness. On my honor, I'll do my best.

Webelos Graduation Song Tune: Red River Valley

From Cub Scouting we soon will be leaving; Do not hasten to bid us adieu But remember us Webelos Cub Scouts, And the boys who have played long with you. Chorus: From Cub Scouting they say you are going; We will miss your bright eyes and your smile, For they say you are taking the sunshine That has brightened our pathway a while. We have talked, we have sung, we have shouted; We have walked, we have swum, we have run, Done our best, with goodwill, done our duty, And we never missed chances for some fun. Chorus Now we’ve grown, over time into Boy Scouts; Big adventures, excitement lie ahead. May we always remember the good times And the friends in this pack we have made.

Taps Day is done, gone the sun, From the lake, from the hills, from the sky; All is well, safely rest, God is nigh. Fading light, dims the sight, And a star gems the sky, gleaming bright. From afar, drawing nigh, falls the night. Thanks and praise, for our days, 'Neath the sun, 'neath the stars, neath the sky; As we go, this we know, God is nigh. Sun has set, shadows come, Time has fled, Scouts must go to their beds Always true to the promise that they made. While the light fades from sight, And the stars gleaming rays softly send, To thy hands we our souls, Lord, commend.

Cub Scouting

“In Cubbing lies the foundation on which we are building the very best of Scout training, if we only take it on the right lines.”

Lord Baden-Powell - 1924.

The Cub Scout Promise:

I, _________________ promise to DO MY BEST

To do my DUTY to GOD And my Country

To HELP other people, and To OBEY the LAW of the Pack.

“Remember that you have promised to be loyal to the Law of the Cub Pack. You made that Promise in front of your brother Cubs. They saw you make that Promise, and what will they think of you if they see you break it?” Quote from ‘The Wolf Cub’ – October 1919

The Cub Scout Law:

The Cub Scout follows Akela. The Cub Scout helps the pack go.

The pack helps the Cub Scout grow. The Cub Scout gives goodwill.

18

Boy Scouting “All promises are important and should never be broken, but when you promise on your honour to do a thing you would rather die than break such a promise.” The Boy Scout Oath:

On my honor, I will do my best To do my duty to God and my country and to obey

the Scout Law; To help other people at all times;

To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight.

According to Aids to Scoutmastership, World Brotherhood Edition in 1944,“The Scout Law is the foundation on which the whole of Scout training rests.” May we be reminded that as Scouters, we, too, must live our lives by the Scout Law:

A Scout is: Trustworthy

Loyal Helpful Friendly

Courteous Kind

Obedient Cheerful Thrifty Brave Clean

and Reverent

19

Venturing

“Venturing's purpose is to provide positive experiences to help young people mature and to prepare them to become responsible and caring adults.”

The Venturing Oath:

As a Venturer, I promise to do my duty to God and help strengthen America,

to help others, and to seek truth, fairness,

and adventure in our world.

The Venturing Code:

As a Venturer, I believe that America's strength lies in our trust in God and in the courage, strength, and traditions of our people. I will, therefore, be faithful in my religious duties and will maintain a personal sense of honor in my own life. I will treasure my American heritage and will do all I can to preserve and enrich it. I will recognize the dignity and worth of all humanity and will use fair play and goodwill in my daily life. I will acquire the Venturing attitude that seeks truth in all things and adventure on the frontiers of our changing world.

20

The Outdoor Code

In his last message to Guides, Lord Baden-Powell said, “God has given us a world to live in that is full of beauties and wonders and He has given us not only eyes to see them but minds to understand them, if we only have the sense to look at them in that light.”

The Outdoor Code:

As an American, I will do my best to:

Be clean in my outdoor manners, Be careful with fire,

Be considerate in the outdoors, and Be conservation minded.

The Pledge of Allegiance “It is still a neglected item in education that the boy should be taught that his rights as a citizen should in the first place be earned by serious performance of his civic duties and responsibilities.” This was first printed in the Headquarters Gazette in July 1914 and unfortunately still holds true today. May we remember that as leaders today we, too, have an obligation to educate Scouts about their duty to our country

The Pledge of Allegiance:

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America.

And to the republic for which it stands, One nation, under God, indivisible,

with liberty and justice for all.

Scout Vespers Tune: "Tannenbaum"

Softly falls the light of day, While our campfire fades away. Silently each scout should ask: "Have I done my daily task? Have I kept my honor bright? Can I guiltless sleep tonight? Have I done and have I dared Everything to be prepared.?" Listen Lord, oh listen Lord, As I whisper soft and low. Bless my mom and Bless my dad, These are things that they should know. I will keep my honor Bright, The oath and law will be my guide. And mom and dad this you should know, Deep in my heart I love you so.

Cub Scout Vespers As the night falls to this land On my promise I will stand I will help the pack to go As the Pack helps me to grow Yes I’ll allways give goodwill And follow my Akela still And before I stop to rest I will do my very best.

Scout Wetspers Softly falls the rain today, As our campsite floats away. Silently, each Scout should ask "Did I bring my SCUBA mask? Have I tied my tent flaps down? Learned to swim, so I won't drown? Have I done, and will I try, Everything to keep me dry?"

Ghost Riders in the Sky An old cowpoke went ridin' out one dark and windy day. Upon a ridge, he rested as he went along his way. When all at once a mighty herd of red-eyed cows he saw, A-plowing through the ragged sky and up a cloudy draw. Yipppie aye-aaa, Yippie aye-ooh, Ghost riders in the sky. Their brands were still on fire and their hooves were made of steel. Their horns were black and shining and their hot breath he could feel. A bolt of fear went through him as they thundered through the sky. For he saw the riders coming hard and he heard their mournful cry. Yippie-aye-aaa, Yippie-aye-ooh, Ghost riders in the sky. Their faces gaunt, their eyes were blurred, their shirts all soaked with sweat. They're riding hard to catch that herd, but they ain't caught 'em yet. 'Cause they've got to ride forever on that range up in the sky, On horses snorting fire as they ride hard hear them cry. Yippie-aye-aaa, Yippie-aye-ooh, Ghost riders in the sky. As the riders loped on by him, he heard one call his name. 'If you want to save your soul from hell a-riding on our range, Then, cowboy, change your ways today or with us you will ride. A-trying to catch the devil's herd across these endless skies.' Yippie-aye-aaa, Yippie-aye-ooh, Ghost riders in the sky.

24

Yankee Doodle Yankee Doodle went to town, a-riding on a pony; Stuck a feather in his cap and called it macaroni. Chorus: Yankee Doodle keep it up, Yankee Doodle dandy, Mind the music and the step and with the girls be handy. Father and I went down to camp along with Captain Gooding And there we saw the men and boys, as thick as hasty pudding. Chorus There was Colonel Washington, upon a strapping stallion, A-giving orders to his men, I guess there was a million. Chorus And there I saw a cannon barrel as big as mother's basin, And every time they touched it off they scampered like the nation. Chorus

25

This Land is Your Land This land is your land, This land is my land, From California To the New York Island, From the redwood forest, To the Gulf stream waters, This land was made for you and me. As I was walking, That ribbon of highway, I saw above me That endless skyway, I saw below me That golden valley. This land was made for you and me I've roamed and rambled And I've followed my footsteps To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts And all around me a voice was sounding This land was made for you and me The sun comes shining As I was strolling The wheat fields waving And the dust clouds rolling The fog was lifting a voice come chanting This land was made for you and me As I was walkin' I saw a sign there And that sign said no trespassin' But on the other side, It didn't say nothin! Now that side was made for you and me!

26

I’ve Been Working on the Railroad I've been working on the railroad All the livelong day I've been working on the railroad Just to pass the time away Can't you hear the whistle blowing Rise up so early in the morn Can't you hear the captain shouting Dinah, blow your horn Dinah, won't you blow, Dinah, won't you blow Dinah, won't you blow your horn Dinah, won't you blow, Dinah, won't you blow Dinah, won't you blow your horn Someone's in the kitchen with Dinah Someone's in the kitchen I know Someone's in the kitchen with Dinah Strumming on the old banjo, and singing Fie, fi, fiddly i o, Fie, fi, fiddly i o Fie, fi, fiddly i o, Strumming on the old banjo

Oh, Susanna Oh, I came from Alabama With a banjo on my knee, I'm goin’ to Louisiana, My true love for to see. It rained all night the day I left, The weather it was dry, The sun so hot I froze to death, Susanna, don't you cry.

27

Refrain Oh, Susanna, oh don't you cry for me, I've come from Alabama with my banjo on my knee. I had a dream the other night When everything was still; I thought I saw Susanna A-coming down the hill. The buckwheat cake was in her mouth, A tear was in her eye; Says I, "I'm comin’ from the South, Susanna, don't you cry." Refrain

Red River Valley From this valley they say you are going We will miss your bright eyes and sweet smile For they say you are taking the sunshine That has brightened our path for a while Come and sit by my side if you love me Do not hasten to bid me adieu But remember the Red River Valley And the cowboy who loved you so true Won't you think of the valley you're leaving Oh how lonely, how sad it will be? Oh think of the fond heart you're breaking And the grief you are causing to me As you go to your home by the ocean May you never forget those sweet hours That we spent in the Red River Valley And the love we exchanged mid the flowers

28

Waltzing Matilda Once a jolly swagman camped by a billabong, Under the shade of a coolabah tree, And he sang as he watched and waited till his billy boiled You'll come a waltzing Matilda with me. Chorus:

Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda, You'll come a waltzing Matilda with me, And he sang as he watched and waited till his billy boiled, You'll come a waltzing Matilda with me.

Down came a jumbuck to drink at that billabong, Up jumped the swagman and grabbed him with glee, And he sang as he shoved that jumbuck in his tuckerbag You'll come a waltzing Matilda with me. Chorus Up rode the squatter mounted on his thoroughbred, Down came the troopers - one, two, three, Whose that jolly jumbuck you've got in your tuckerbag? You'll come a waltzing Matilda with me. On My Honor Chorus : On my honor, I will try. There's a duty to be done and I say aye. There's a reason to be here for a reason above. My honor is to try and my duty is to love. People don't need to know my name. If I've done any harm, then I'm to blame. If I've helped someone, then I've helped me. And I've opened up my eyes to see. Chorus I've tucked away a song or two. If you're feeling low, there's one for you. If you need a friend, then I will come. And there's many more where I come from. Chorus Friendship is the strangest thing if you keep it to yourself, no reward will bring but you gave it away, you gave it to me and from now on great friends we'll be Chorus Come with me where the fire burns bright, We can even see better by the candle's light. And we'll find more meaning in a campfire's glow, Than we've ever found in a year or so. Chorus We've a promise to always keep. And to pray "Softley Falls" before we sleep. We are Boy Scouts together and when we're gone, We'll still be trying and singing this song. Chorus

On Top of Spaghetti

On top of spaghetti, All covered with cheese, I lost my poor meatball, When somebody sneezed.

It rolled off the table, And on to the floor, And then my poor meatball, Rolled out of the door.

It rolled in the garden, And under a bush, And then my poor meatball, Was nothing but mush.

The mush was as tasty As tasty could be, And then the next summer, It grew into a tree.

The tree was all covered, All covered with moss, And on it grew meatballs, And tomato sauce.

So if you eat spaghetti, All covered with cheese, Hold on to your meatball, Whenever you sneeze.
