The paintwork in the classrooms was tired and worn, many of the black boards were broken, there was a lack of chairs for children to sit on and the access to class 7 was considered hazardous. With the help of GVI Charitable Trust donations and some volunteer elbow grease, the school has undergone a revamp as part of GVI’s longterm objectives to improve the school environment and facilities. In December 2013 GVI repainted classes 3&4, teachers and students said it was remarkable how a fresh coat of paint lifted the atmosphere of the learning environment. When GVI returned to Navunisea in January it was clear that the school had suffered further damage due to severe weather. GVI set out to provide the needed renovations in time for the new academic year. Classrooms 5 & 8 were first on the list. These classrooms also act as the school hall and had seen the most wear and tear. Over a week GVI volunteers transformed the dark and dull classrooms and into bright, fun spaces for the pupils to learn in.

The paintwork in the classrooms was tired and worn, many of the
black boards were broken, there was a lack of chairs for children
to sit on and the access to class 7 was considered hazardous. With
the help of GVI Charitable Trust donations and some volunteer elbow

objectives to improve the school environment and facilities.

Next GVI began work on class 7 which was in severe disrepair,
heavily neglected and vandalised.

Firstly, and most importantly, GVI set out to provide safe
access to class 7. Its rotted, ill-fitting stairs and floor boards
and lack of handrail made access to the classroom hazardous. Over a
week GVI volunteers worked hard to repair the staircase, provide a
handrail, and replace the missing floor boards. Next, the team set
to work replacing and repainting the worn blackboards and clearing
out the neglected and cluttered classroom. Class 7 is now
transformed from a space which would not have stimulated or engaged
any child to a safe, bright functioning classroom.

Finally, with the help of GVI Charitable Trust donations, GVI
provided 30 brand chairs to Navunisea District School and
distributed them throughout the classrooms. In 2013 the children
often shared single seats, or packed onto benches but GVI can now
ensure that every child has their own seat for the beginning of the
new academic year.
