NDPL, besides establishing itself as a frontrunner in the power

distribution reforms in the country, has also steadfastly worked in

the area of community relations and has taken great strides in

developing and nurturing a sustainable relationship with its

consumers and the community at large in its area of operation.

We strongly believe that CS initiatives play a vital role towards

organizational success and our continued commitment in this area

will contribute actively in our long term sustainable growth. NDPL

has a three pronged CS strategy wherein the community initiatives

have been broadly segmented into three categories:

(a) Philanthropic

(b) Compensatory

(c) Business Oriented in nature.

Our CS activities are in sync with the Tata Group ethos and are also

aligned with The Tata Council for Community Initiatives (TCCI),

which has over the years successfully institutionalized the work

that individual Tata companies have been doing in the area of

community welfare and helps them to focus their efforts to

optimally influence the development of society.

NDPL has undertaken TATA CS Protocol assessment in 2007 & 2009

and the findings further led to strengthening of our existing

programs and new CS interventions were introduced. Our CS

initiatives are spearheaded by the senior management and actively

driven by team NDPL. We also encourage our employees to

voluntarily undertake community relations activities and play a

pivotal role in welfare activities.

We look forward to many more social welfare initiatives under the

umbrella of Corporate Sustainability for value creation in our

business through the natural and social capital.

North Delhi Power Limited (NDPL) is a joint venture of Tata Power and the Government of NCT of Delhi with the majority stake being held by the Tata Power. It distributes electricity in North & North West parts of Delhi and serves a populace of 50 lakh. The company started its operations on July 1, 2002 post the unbundling of erstwhile Delhi Vidyut Board. With a registered customer base of around 10 lakh and a peak load of around 1150 MW, the company's operations span across an area of 510 sq kms.

NDPL has been the frontrunner in implementing power distribution reforms in the capital city and is acknowledged for its consumer friendly practices. Since privatization, the Aggregate Technical & Commercial (AT&C) losses in NDPL areas have shown a record decline. Today we stand at 15% which is an unprecedented reduction of over 65% from an opening loss level of 53%.

On the power supply front too, NDPL areas have shown remarkable improvement. The company has embarked upon an ambitious plan to implement high-tech automated systems for its entire distribution network. Systems such as SCADA, GIS and OTS are the cornerstone of the company's distribution automation project. To fight the menace of power theft, modern techniques like High Voltage Distribution (HVDS) System and LT Arial Bunch Conductor have been adopted.

NDPL was also conferred the 'Asian Utility of the Year 2008' award by Asian Power and is also the winner of Palladium Balanced Scorecard Hall of Fame Award.

NDPL has the distinction of being the youngest company and the first power utility in India to receive the prestigious CII EXIM Award for 'Strong Commitment to Excel'. It is also the only distribution utility to receive the ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 certification. NDPL has also been conferred the 'National Award for Meritorious Performance in Power Distribution Sector' by the Ministry of Power, Government of India in the years 2004-05, 2005-06 & 2007-08.

Being a TATA group member NDPL believes that the primary purpose of a business is to improve quality of life of people. NDPL's VISION MISSION and Corporate Sustainability Policy set the overall direction for community initiatives.

Tata Commitment

Working towards the betterment of the society in which we operate has always been central to our operating principles and is aptly highlighted in our CSR Policy. In fact, the parent group, i.e. the house of TATA's has been the pioneer in designing, developing and implementing various Social interventions and initiatives, not since the time CSR became popular and in vogue, but since when

nobody knew or thought of it!!! Our CSR policy provides corroborate to this claim and aims at imbibing social alignment as a key component of all our business

processes and strategy.

A few of the quotes on CSR by legendary figures of TATA, our parent group

Mr. Jamsetji N. Tata

(Founder, Tata Group

In a free enterprise, the community is not just another stakeholder in business but is in fact the very purpose of its Existence.

To my father the acquisition of wealth was only a secondary object in life; it was always subordinate to the constant desire in his heart to improve the industrial and intellectual condition of the people of this country; and the various enterprises which he from time to time undertook in his lifetime had for their principal object the advancement of India in these important respects.

Sir Dorab Ji Tata on Mr. J. N. Tata's ideals

The wealth gathered by Jamsetji Tata and his sons in half a century of industrial pioneering formed but a minute fraction of the amount by which they enriched the nation. The whole of that wealth is held in trust for the people and used exclusively for their benefit. The cycle is thus complete; what came from the people has gone back to the people many times over. Every company has a special continuing

responsibility towards the people of the area in which it is located and in which its employees and their families live. In every city, town or village, large or small, there is always a need for improvement, for help, for relief, for leadership and for guidance. I suggest that the most significant contribution organised industry can make is by identifying itself with the life and problems of the people of the community to which it belongs and by applying its resources, skills and talents, to the extent that it can reasonably spare them to serve and help them.

Mr. J. R. D. Tata

No success or achievement in material terms is worthwhile unless it serves the needs or interests of the country and its people.

Ratan N. Tata, (Chairman)

NDPL Corporate Sustainability Group Activities (FY 2008-09)

NDPL has a three pronged CS strategy and broadly segmenting the

community initiatives into

?Philanthropic CS

?Compensatory CS

?Business Oriented CS

Being a TATA group member NDPL believes that the primary purpose of a business is to improve

quality of life of people. NDPL's VISION, MISSION and Corporate Sustainability policy set the

overall direction for community initiatives. The identification of the key communities is done on the

basis of geographical spread of business, i.e. consumers of NDPL residing in North, North – West

Delhi.

which is neither compensatory nor business oriented but NDPL believes

that even such initiatives have a long term business case. These activities are Support to Child

Home & SOS Bawana and MSSI etc.

in nature e.g. JJ clusters who are being forced to pay for electricity are

supported through medical camps, drug de-addiction, life insurance, Vocational Training

,Adult Literacy program and such other interventions. The environment protection initiatives

to offset the environmental impact caused by our business.

which besides serving societal needs also helps building a brand image

of business, e.g. Energy Conservation through Energy Club program, SA-8000 and UNGC.

NDPL Energy Club

Project 'CONSERVE'

Project 'NEST

One often thinks what the future is going to look like with continuous exhaustion of natural resources

on earth. In the times of ongoing power crisis and unavailability of even basic electricity supply to

some of the inhabitants of Delhi, the future looks anything but 'Bright'. To make a difference to the

rampant power crisis and the general lack of concern and awareness, four years back a small lamp

was lit to spread the light of awareness on Energy Conservation techniques. The unique initiative, a

first of its kind, is based on the maxim of 'Collaborating to Conserve'.

Children are one third of our population and all of our future. With the increased awareness levels of

today's children, they play a formidable role in day to day decision making and simple choices - be it

in choosing the color of the car or what brand of Television the family should buy. Understanding

their evolving importance NDPL wanted to collaborate with them to create change, to foster

conservation.

With this need of the hour as its forte, for bringing social and behavioural change, NDPL Energy Club

is an endeavour in this direction by North Delhi Power Limited. The young turks of our nation, kids

from classes VI-IX were made the change agent for this much needed social change. The Club seeks to

sensitize school children of an impressionable age (Classes VI – IX) in schools, on such issues relating

to Energy Conservation.

The energy conservation drive in schools is rolled out first with

(CONServation of Energy Resources through Verification and Experimentation) and secondly with

', (Neighbourhood Energy Sensitisation Task).

The club also conducts feedback workshops that provide an interactive session where children clarify

their doubts & apprehensions and share their learning. At the same time, events and contests like

poster making, quiz, debate, nukkad natak and science model display is organized under the banner

of Urja Mela once in a year to encourage students to demonstrate their understanding on energy

conservation.

NDPL - Corporate Sustainability Group Report – 2008-09

The conclusion of Phase III in November 2007 saw 92,988 neighbors and 97,141 friends sensitized

through DPEC(Domestic Pattern of Energy Consumption) forms. A core group of over 13, 000

catalysts, and change makers who have championed the movement in these 50 schools have brought

about this incredible achievement.

Phase- IV of Energy Club brought 40 new member schools on board making the total number of

members to 90 schools. An Energy Conservation Team comprising of CS group members & volunteer

employees went to these schools in their morning assemblies & zero period sensitizing students about

energy conservation. 31, 000 students from these 40 new schools are expected to sensitize approx.

3,00,000 neighbors and friends at the conclusion of Phase IV in August' 2009.

Urja Mela is based on the theme of Competing to Conserve where the participant students compete in

various events like debate competition, banner making, science model display, and nukkad naatak.

Urja Mela held in the month of Aprli this year was attended by over 700 school children and 68

member schools. This massive participation highlights the growing concern about climate change

and urges everyone to pledge for adopting energy efficient measures for conservation of energy.

Modern Public School, Shalimar Bagh won the URJA CUP 2009 for overall performance in the various

events held during the day. The URJA MELA not only provided a wide canvas to these budding

talents to express their creativity and all the hard work they have put-in the entire year but also served

as a platform of congregation for each one to share, interact and learn from one another.

It was evident from the enthusiasm on the faces of the children, teachers, judges, and volunteers that

the spirit and the message of Energy Conservation went out loud all around.

A panel of 32 Judges, Facilitators and 27 volunteers made events judgments & its conduction possible.

This is besides dedicated services provided by 10 Judges to assess the Essay Entries from 40 member

schools previously.

Health Camps:-

Our area of operation has a sizeable industrial population and in some areas the density is remarkably

at the higher side. These industrial workers have abject working and living conditions which do not

cater for even their basic needs of daily life, medical attention being a distant dream. During FY 2008-

2009 CS group organized 4 free Health Check up camps at different locations of NDPL distribution

area. Residents of JJ cluster and industry workers are main beneficiaries Medicines were distributed

free of cost to needy ones. The residents of these areas have reaped the benefits of the health camp.

5563 residents from different JJ clusters had been benefited through these camps. During the camp,

specialist doctors like Gynecologist, ophthalmologist, Eye specialist and General Physician from our

panel hospitals including NDPL Doctors examined the patients and free medicines were distributed

to the patients. Blood Sugar testing & Blood Pressure check up was also done by the NDPL medical

team.

Disability program

United Nation's Global Compact Program

To reemphasize the image of an equal opportunity employer, NDPL has adopted the dis-ability

policy. The policy aims to make NDPL a disabled friendly company. This initiative of NDPL will

open the windows of opportunity for PwDs who otherwise hardly get a chance to exhibit their

competency. It will also facilitate & provide easy accessibility to our consumers who are physically

challenged.

To start with our disabled friendly mission, we conducted an access audit of NDPL Corporate office

with help of a NGO. This helped us to assess the compatibility of available infrastructure for PwDs

and modifications that need to be done to make it completely disabled friendly. Access Audit was

replicated in 10 other major locations. To start with NDPL has recruited 5 PwDs in FY 2008-09.

Employee Volunteering:-

We, at NDPL, believe that voluntary participation by employee in CS initiatives would provide then

immense satisfaction of having contributed to the betterment of community. With that belief in heart

& mind, NDPL management's efforts has always been directed towards employee's engagement in

community development works.

NDPL Volunteering Matrix, which basically mentions the various capacities in which the employees

can contribute to the social process initiated by NDPL, was launched through the organizational

intranet for every employee to go through and enroll. A general circular is also issued providing a

detail of CS activities & inviting volunteering requests. Based on the interest areas of volunteers they

opt for various CS activities.

NDPL Energy Club and Vocational Training centers have been two programs which have been

purely volunteer driven program. Volunteers are also playing an important role in the

implementation of SA 8000 certification apart from participating in other CS activities.

More than 494 NDPL employees have registered to volunteer in the community development

programs in FY 2008-09. Also 726 volunteering days have been devoted by NDPL employees in CS
