Freedom Rock

Jensen Construction and Argee Help Move Freedom Rock

Landon Streit, Project Engineer for Jensen Construction, was instrumental in helping Mills County citizens haul and place a Freedom Rock in the town of Emerson to honor and recognize Iowa Veterans.

The Freedom Rock Tour, created by Freedom Rock artist Ray “Bubba” Sorensen II, aims to boost tourism and spread the message of thanking our Veterans by painting a “unique to their area” Freedom Rock for all 99 counties in the state of Iowa.

The Freedom Rock for Mills County was organized by a group of local citizens who contacted the Fraternal Order of Eagles to help purchase and organize the transporting of the rock. When Landon, an Eagle Club member in Glenwood, IA, overheard fellow members discussing the challenges associated with moving the rock, he was more than willing to help.

Landon was given permission to use one of Jensen’s cranes and a volunteer operator to lift and place the rock. Brad Kohlwes with Argee also agreed to donate the use of one of their trucks to haul the crane. Mills County received their Freedom Rock March 14th thanks to Landon, Wayne Harley (Jensen Operator), Mark Beck (Argee), and local Eagle Club members.

The rock was painted in August of this year.

Safety Messages Streamed on New Closed-Circuit TVs

On July 10th, Central Iowa Ready Mix kicked off its first safety meeting over TV. Previously, we brought all employees in at the same time to hold weekly safety meetings. This meant if the first driver’s start time was 5:30 a.m., all employees started at 5:30 a.m. This made for very long days for all. So we came up with the idea of streaming safety meetings over TV through a closed circuit network. This allows us to bring employees in only 15-20 minutes before they would normally start, and assure the same message is spread consistently at all locations. Supervisors are also right there for any questions or discussions.

Having this technology at the plants gives us the opportunity to stream something all day, every day. We can stream safety slogans, daily production, production for the next day, maps to projects, quality topics, notification of incidents for awareness, Stretch ‘n Flex sessions, etc. We now have endless opportunities to get information to our people.

I can’t believe summer is almost over already. Where does the time go? I would like to start off by thanking the great team we have here at Central Iowa Trucking. So far this season, you have endured another wet start. This is the third year in a row we have had such a rainy season; I’m starting to think this is the new normal.

Despite the weather, we are not that far off our budget. Thanks to a good April, we are slightly ahead of last year at this time and have added five new trucks to the fleet. This puts our fleet at seventy trucks strong!

Having more trucks has helped us survive this rainy year, but because of being stuck in catch-up mode, we had to hire outside help. So far, we have hired twenty new drivers in 2015, of which eighteen are still with us. Five of those eighteen are part-time. Our goal heading into this season was not only to hire more drivers than we needed, but to add reliable part-time drivers. Hopefully this will allow us to be more flexible with the time-off requests. I would like to give our driver trainers a special shout-out for being so dedicated to getting the new guys up to speed as soon as possible. We could not do it without you, so THANK YOU!

On the safety front, we implemented our new SAP program (safety-attitude-performance). It was designed to reward safe behavior and attitude on a monthly basis, which in turn should motivate everybody to keep safety their number one priority throughout the year. This seems to be having a positive effect. Until we have zero incidents, we will continue to work hard at always getting better at safety.

As I look ahead, the next four months will be extremely busy. We will not only be trying to make up for lost time, we will be starting new jobs that need to be completed before snow flies. From the airport to the landfill, from Microsoft to I-35 in Decatur County, it should round out to be another record-setting year. Thank you to everybody who makes it happen, including all of the supporting services from The Rasmussen Group.

Jeff Wangsness

The City of Woodward awarded Grimes Asphalt a 3-million dollar contract to resurface nearly the entire town, equating to approximately 25 miles of streets. The project included 20,000 tons of asphalt paving, milling, grading, and new concrete sidewalks. A project of this magnitude comes with high expectations from all sides. There are many moving parts, from notifying residents and allowing access to homes and businesses to figuring out how to pave to maximize efficiency and production. All Grimes Asphalt crews, along with JMT and CSI, have performed and delivered top-notch, quality work with impressive class. They brought this project to a close in just three months, far ahead of the original completion date specified.

In February, we were successful bidders in the IDOT Letting, acquiring over 35,000 cubic yards with Jensen Construction and DGI Menard for a project on I-29 in Council Bluffs. Brian Hensley and Brian Brake were put in charge of getting the plant ready, and on April 14th we batched our first load out of the Council Bluffs Plant. Since then, Brian Brake has batched 18,921 cubic yards without a hitch. This project gets our trucks on the roads and visible to potential customers in that area. This will help our newest addition to the Omaha area, Tate Sutton, who was hired to help Chris Rogers, and John Ingram build new relationships and a customer base. Thanks to all employees in the Omaha area for their commitment and hard work in getting Council Bluffs off to a good start.

Spinning Out Power!

The next time you’re driving past Stuart, IA, look to the south at the Stuart/I-80 exit and you’ll see a GE 1.85 Megawatt wind turbine standing lonely in a corn field spinning out power. This single turbine is capable of producing enough electricity to power 332 average homes in Iowa. JCS erected this turbine the first week of June for a private investment group. The turbine’s power will be sold to a local utility for Midwest distribution.

Hallett

2015 has been a busy year at Hallett Materials in Houston. So far this year, we have had many unusual circumstances and events, some good and some not so good, and we’re only halfway through! Starting in February, the rains came, and it kept raining and raining and raining, all the way through early June. We experienced two substantial flood events, which brought the swollen San Jacinto River into the lakes where we dredge. At one point, the high water got uncomfortably close to our electrical boxes, but in the end we were fortunate and had no damage to equipment. Other than shutting the plant down for a few days and having to clean up the mess that the flood waters left behind, we were no worse for the wear. Whenever something like this happens, we ask our men to put themselves into unfamiliar situations which can be dangerous, but, as usual, our men stepped up to the challenge of operating in unusually high water without a single injury or accident. For that, I am extremely proud of them! In spite of the rain, our Houston economy continues to boom. In fact, April was one of our wettest periods, yet we had the best month in the history of the company!

At our Porter plant we produce both fine sand and concrete sand. Historically, we have concentrated on our concrete sand production, for many reasons, but mostly because concrete sand has always had much higher margins than fine sand. Since fine sand is a byproduct of concrete sand production, we have always looked for ways to move fine sand so we wouldn’t drown in it. In the early 90’s we set up a pug mill to mix cement with our fine sand to make stabilized sand for underground utilities projects. At that time, it was a great way to add value to an otherwise cheap product, and more importantly, it was a great way to move large volumes of fine sand! Fast forward to 2015. In and around Houston there are many highways, houses, and buildings being built all at once, and with the increased demand, we are able to get more money for all of our materials than ever before. Fine sand is still less expensive than concrete sand, but the margins are closer than they’ve ever been in the past, and it just didn’t make sense to keep adding it to stabilized sand. In June we made the decision to sell our pug mill and stabilized sand operation to one of our customers, Great Southern Stabilized Materials, and the deal was finalized July 1st. It was bittersweet to sell that aspect of our business, not only because of the many customer and vendor relationships that would be going with the business, but it had also become part of our identity. We kept the pug mill at our Hockley plant where we use unwashed bank sand in our stabilized sand, which continues to be extremely productive and profitable, so we didn’t entirely lose all of our relationships associated with pug mills and underground utilities contractors.

They say that change is part of life, and how well we adapt to it determines how successful we will be. In 2015 there have been many changes and many adaptations that have had to be made at Hallett Materials in Texas. Only time will tell, but with the great people and support we have, I’m sure we adapted well! We look forward to the remainder of 2015 being just as good as the beginning!

Circle V

Hauling a transformer from one state to another is not as simple as it may sound. Russell Hopkins of Circle V Specialized, Inc. was assigned to that task. He was hauling a transformer that blew from Bloomington, Illinois to Jordan, Minnesota for repairs. In a typical commuter vehicle, that trip would take just over seven hours. More than a week after leaving Bloomington, Hopkins’ load sat at Rognes Brothers Excavating in Lake Mills on Friday. “You’ve got to deal with cities, you’ve got to deal with counties, you’ve got to get permission to travel anywhere,” Hopkins said. “You’ve got to find places like this to park it.”

The transformer measures in at 18 feet wide, more than 17 feet tall, and 227 feet long. That is more than four times as long as a standard 53-foot semi-trailer. It also weighs 501,000 pounds. A standard driving lane is 12 feet wide. “With a load this big it takes the entire highway,” Hopkins said. “Everybody has to exit the road for us to come through. It’s just a safety factor.” Because of the large load, Hopkins not only needed spotter vehicles traveling through Iowa, but he was also required to have an escort from Iowa Motor Vehicle Enforcement.

The truck and trailer hauling the transformer is much bigger than a typical oversize load tractor and trailer. The transformer load is extremely oversized and is not something you will likely encounter very often. You will, however, see trucks with oversize loads. Those drivers ask that you are extremely cautious around them too. “When people are right behind me, if they can’t see my mirrors, I definitely can’t see them, especially with an oversize load,” said Rognes Brothers oversize truck driver Jason Dunlop. Dunlop and Hopkins said hauling an oversize load can be challenging to begin with, but it can be even harder when other drivers are not cooperating. “A lot of it is because I don’t think they understand what it takes to take the turns,” Dunlop said. “They don’t know why we’re driving down the center of the road when we’re approaching a bridge. It’s not because we don’t know how to drive. It’s because of the weight; we have to be down the center of the bridge to distribute that weight evenly.” “Just be patient with us,” Hopkins said, “We try to get out of the way as fast as we can.” Hopkins said the truck will sit in Lake Mills for a couple of days while they coordinate with Minnesota authorities for an escort. He expects to be able to leave Sunday. He said as drivers carrying loads that big they do not get to pick what roads they travel. Instead, they are at the discretion of the state they are traveling through.

Both the Iowa and Minnesota Departments of Transportation ask that you pay attention if you are around oversize loads and to slow down, be patient, give them space, and practice good driving habits.

Safety

90% of all trucking incidents and crashes happen during backing maneuvers, and that 10% of all liability incidents happen while backing?

Most of these incidents result in property damage only, but severe consequences can also occur such as: • Backing into • Backing over, or • Pinning a person

According to the National Safety Council, one out of four vehicle accidents can be blamed on poor backing techniques. Even worse…Backing accidents cause 500 deaths and 15,000 injuries per year!

AVOID BACKING WHEN POSSIBLE

Skill is required to be a safe driver. Professional drivers know well the daily challenge of avoiding collisions with fixed objects while backing. Although a driver’s ability to see toward the rear is limited, this handicap can be overcome through the use of extra care and caution.

ASK YOURSELF THESE KEY QUESTIONS:

• Do I need to back? • Have I checked for overhead power lines, poles, ladders, awnings, etc.? • Are there pot-holes or soft pavement obstacles? • Can other traffic encroach on my lane of travel? • Can anyone potentially walk into my path? • Do I need someone to control or block other traffic? • Will ice, snow, fog, or glare restrict my vision? • How close do I need to get? • Have I secured the trailer doors? • Have I put out cones? • Should this approach and delivery be abandoned?

GET OUT AND LOOK! (GOAL)

Nothing can replace the information gained by using your eyes on potential hazards.

• Walk around your vehicle to get a complete picture of what you are backing into. • Walk the pavement surface looking for depressions and fixed objects, and be certain pedestrians are a

safe distance from your vehicle. • Look Up! Hazards may come in the form of power lines, awnings, or even building overhangs. • Check side clearances and adjust your mirrors. • Signal your intentions by giving your horn a light tap and rev your engine slightly as an additional

warning. Use your four-way flashers. • Get to it! After checking, start backing before the picture changes.

Did you know that...

Page 13: nder Construction - The Rasmussen Group · nder Construction The Corporate ... To a Safe and Healthful 2015, Kurt Rasmussen ... can stream safety slogans, daily production, production

October 2015 | Volume 27 13

TIPS FOR SAFE BACKING

• Minimize the distance you need to back by getting as close as possible to your destination prior to moving in reverse. The less ground you cover in reverse, the less chance you will have of striking a fixed object.

• Don’t Rush- Take a deep breath and commit yourself to perfect backing with no compromises. No one ever

made up time by backing quickly. - Slow movement helps you maintain full control of your vehicle and to correctly judge distances. - If you are unsure of anything during your backing, revert to your “GOAL” - Get Out & Look!

• Check all sides as you back- Keep your eyes moving to ensure that conditions have not changed. - Mirrors deliver a key portion of the total picture, but only a small portion of the total picture. - To be certain, stop 3/4 of the way, set the brake, and once again, get out and look.

• Use all your resources and guides- A reliable and qualified guide can keep pedestrians out of the blind zone. - Agree on hand signals you both understand. - Turn off your radio and open your window. - Keep your guide in sight at all times. If your guide disappears from sight - stop immediately! - The final responsibility for safe backing remains with the driver, not the guide.

BACKING COLLISIONS

The National Safety Council states, “In most fleets, one out of every four collisions involves backing.” Therefore, we need to apply all the safe backing techniques we have learned to minimize risk.

The above information about backing applies not only to the operation of company vehicles, but is relevant to the operation of your personal vehicles as well. Keep these safety tips in mind, both on and off the job—no matter where you are, make safe backing your G.O.A.L.!!

The 2015/2016 company biometric screenings have been scheduled! They will take place at a variety of Rasmussen Group locations and are free to full-time employees and their spouses.A biometric screening is a short health exam that provides information about your risk for certain diseases and medical conditions. Knowing and understanding the results of your biometric screening is important and can help you know how to take action to improve your overall health. The screening includes body measurements and a simple finger stick to obtain a blood sample. The following measurements are collected:

• Cholesterol • Fasting glucose• Triglycerides • Blood pressure • Waist size/circumference (abdominal fat is a predictor of risk for obesity-related diseases)

These biometric measurements have been chosen because they are the leading indicators for diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. If an employee and/or a spouse also participates in the Work Well employee wellness program, an additional $25 incentive is offered for completing the screenings.
