OCCUPY POLITICS WITH

CITIZENSHIP AND BOLDNESS!GABINETONA (a big feminist cabinet, in portuguese) is an experience of citizen occupancy in institutional politics. This project, unprecedented in Brazilian politics, brings together four parliamentary mandates of different levels in a collective mandate with shared actions, strategies and teams. With them, more than 90 activists, experts and researchers work in cooperation with citizens and social movements.

Activists of social movements, organizations and independents from Belo Horizonte created Muitas (“Many”). The goal was to occupy the political elections with citizenship and boldness.

Muitas presented 12 council candidates for municipal elections in Belo Horizonte. Based on coherence and political affinity, the candidacies were structured in the Brazilian political party PSOL. There was a collective campaign under the slogan “vote for one, vote for all”. With a very low election finance and a lot of volunteer work, Muitas movement received an expressive number of votes in all corners of Belo Horizonte, electing two councilwoman, including the most voted woman in the city’s history.

With the two mandates of Áurea Carolina and Cida Falabella, the joint political experience gained the name Gabinetona (big feminist cabinet). At the end of this year, the first edition of Ocupa Política (Occupy Politics) was held in Belo Horizonte, which is now configured as a confluence of organizations, social movements and mandates that come together to strengthen many activist candidates.

In another collective campaign, Muitas presented seven candidacies to the State Council of Minas Gerais and five candidacies to the House of Representatives. Áurea Carolina is elected federal congresswoman and Andréia de Jesus regional councilwoman. As a result, Gabinetona’s experience was extended to the three spheres of the Brazilian political system.

We are committed to the real and urgent needs of the population. Our team has experience working in tune with the struggles faced by the population and is organized in what we call the mapa de lutas (a “map of struggles”). There are different “mapas de lutas” which establish the dialogue with social movements and activists, but also with civil servants, contributing to strengthen the community by facilitating access to instruments of institutional policy.

POPULAR LAW LAB (LabPops)Our bills are built collectively, in chat wheels and dialogue with communities. The LabPops are also instruments to guide our actions on proposals presented by other parliamentarians or the head of executive and its liasons.

STRENGTHENING GROUPS (GFortes)We have groups formed by activists, researchers, workers and people interested in contributing to the political orientation of the mandate.

>> REPRESENTATIVENESS in the fight against political privileges. Gabinetona’s team is formed by more than 90 activists, with majorities of women, black and LGBTIQ people, indigenous people, people with disabilities, quilombolas (inhabitants of quilombos, Brazilian hinterland settlement founded by escaped slaves with African origin) and urban dwellers.

>> DONATION OF GRANTS in the fight against economic privileges. We do not agree with the high grants that separate parliamentarians from the majority of the population wages in Brazil. Our parliamentarians donate part of their monthly grant for the support mechanisms for social and cultural actions.

>> We are committed to ACCOUNTABILITY. We periodically carry out balance sheets of the mandates in public spaces. We also publish our political positions in the parliamentarians social media, as well as our government oversight, the main votes in the Houses and the most relevant facts of our political agenda.

PARLIAMENTARY ACTION

CÊ FRAGAPublic call in which the community is invited to nominate social and cultural initiatives to be mapped and recognized. Through this instrument, part of the parliamentary grants are donated.

ZONA DE CONFLUÊNCIA (Confluence Zone)Open and formative meetings with various themes. “Resistance, territories and well-living”, “Black feminist resistance”, “Art, politics and madness”, “Struggle to retire” are some of the themes that have already been covered.

TEATRO NO LEGISLATIVO (Legislative theatre)AzDiferentonas is our theater and popular education group that, inspired by the work of Augusto Boal, acts as our poetic and artistic link with the city. The group created an experimental group of Theatre of the Oppressed which aims to multiply this experience.

CAFÉ COM A CIDAMeetings and workshops with women from Serrano neighborhood, located on the outskirts of Belo Horizonte (Minas Gerais).

FRENTE DE DIREITOS HUMANOS (Human Rights Front)Gabinetona receives reports of rights violations and gives them treatment in social cooperation, activating a network of supporters, lawyers, refering them to adequate civil services, or carrying on parliamentary actions.

DIGNIDADE AMBULANTE (Dignity for street workers)Project that seeks to dialogue with low income street vendors, facing criminalization attempts and helping to influence public opinion.

INDIANIZA BHEthnic-racial literacy program that visits schools, universities, cultural centers and other spaces seeking to build new understandings of indigenous cultures.

CULTURAS JUVENIS (Youth cultures)Project built in articulation with several autonomous social groups. The goal is to create a field of maximum confluence between the groups, to defend cultural rights and to strengthen and simplify access to public space.
