Mountain Ridge High School FAQ’s: Schedule Changes & Concerns

Once schedules are published in PowerSchool for student view, students will be able to complete an on-line schedule change form. The link found below will not be active until schedules are published in PowerSchool the week of July 27th.

Priority Schedule Concerns for Students:

What if my schedule has a “schedule problem” listed as a course on the schedule? If you have a “Schedule Problem,” please fill out the schedule change form at https://url.dvusd.org/3261a8a1. If this is on your schedule on the first day of school please email your counselor. The counselor list is below. What if I am a senior and I am not scheduled for a class that I need for graduation (i.e. I failed Biology 1 and it is not on my schedule for this year)? Please fill out the schedule change form at https://url.dvusd.org/3261a8a1. What if I took a summer school class and that class is still listed on my schedule? Please fill out the schedule change form at https://url.dvusd.org/3261a8a1. Email your counselor proof of completion. What if I am taking a West-Mec or CTE course and it is not listed on my schedule (i.e. Cosmetology or Nursing)? Please fill out the schedule change form at https://url.dvusd.org/3261a8a1.

Please remember that schedule changes are only made for one of the four reasons outlined below: 1) Computer error2) Missing a class that is a graduation requirement3) Medical reason (documentation required)4) Completion of an approved summer school course (documentation required)

Other Schedule Concerns for Students:

What if I do not have the lunch I hoped for? Lunch choices are not able to be accommodated due to master schedule design of all classes on campus. What if I did not get my first elective choice? Students may get their alternative elective choices due to class loads and availability. If you did not get your first choice elective you may fill out a schedule change form, and your counselor will check for availability at her earliest convenience. What if I changed my mind about a class over the summer? Student class schedules were developed by requests that students made last year during the registration process to ensure correct staffing and class sizes. Therefore, we are not able to make changes at this time. What if I am in an Honors/AP class and I did not do my summer work or I changed my mind? Students enrolled in an advanced course must remain in the class for the first 15 days of school. If, after the 15 days, a level change still seems appropriate, the student may collaborate with his or her teacher and parent to determine the best course of action. A change can be accommodated only with administrative approval. Please keep in mind this may result in multi-period and/or teacher changes.

July 16, 2020

Dear Parents: One of Mountain Ridge High School’s major goals is to encourage students to attend school on a daily basis because, as we well know, education is a key to their future. We feel strongly that it is our duty, in conjunction with parents, to teach our students responsibility. One indicator of responsibility is attendance. As we prepare our students to join the workforce, we hope to instill good attendance and punctuality. Good attendance is positively correlated with higher grades and better mastery of learning. Our attendance policy has been designed with these goals in mind.

1. Parents must call 623-376-3090 and excuse absences on the day of or by 12 noon the day

following an absence, or it will be considered unexcused. Students have one school day for each day missed to make up work/tests regardless of the number of days absent.

2. Students may not exceed 12 excused or unexcused total absences per semester per class or loss of credit may result. This complies with state statutes that require 90% attendance to fulfill minimum attendance requirements.

3. If a student has an extended absence (three or more days), please notify his/her counselor 623-376-3016 to make arrangements for homework

4. If a student must be late to school, the parent must come in with the student to excuse him/her, or the student will be sent to the tardy/sweep room. A student may also provide documentation to the attendance office from a doctor, dentist, etc. in order to receive a pass to enter class late. Phone calls from parents for late passes will not be accepted.

5. Students who are late to any class will be sent to the tardy/sweep room for that class period.

Any student who is swept and wants credit for an assignment that is due must turn the work in to the teacher the same day of the sweep. It is the responsibility of the student to get any assigned material on the same day of the sweep and have it prepared on the due date. If a student chooses not to go to sweep, the missed class is unexcused.

6. MRHS’s sweep policy is strictly enforced which sets consistent expectations for our students to be on time to each and every class period. Consequences for each sweep are listed in the online Student Rights and Responsibilities and accumulate for the entire year; they do NOT start over at the beginning of each semester.

Your student can access the 2020-2021 Student Rights and Responsibilities handbook electronically via the MRHS website. Please take time to read the attendance information.

Sincerely, MRHS Administration Attendance Clerk: 623-376-3008

*** REMINDER *** During 1st period only, students who arrive after 8:00 a.m. must provide medical documentation or they will go to the sweep room until the 2nd period bell rings. This procedure has been put in place to minimize excessive disruptions to the learning environment.

Mountain Ridge is a Technology Rich Campus! The purpose of expanding technology-based learning is to empower teachers and students to teach and learn in ways never before possible. Doing so has the potential to increase students’ marketable skills, including critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, and creativity. It is very likely that students will be asked to use technological resources in their college or chosen career; therefore, we see preparing them for these contexts as our educational obligation.

So what does this mean for you and your student? Freshmen and NEW MRHS Students: Freshmen and new MRHS students will be issued a district-owned and maintained iPad to use in class and at home to complete classwork, assessments, and projects. In addition, he/she will be issued a protective case and power cord. Distributed technology items will be collected again at the end of the year. Teachers will train students in the care and appropriate academic use of the iPad. This device will be issued during iPad Pick Up. Students must have their 2020-2021 DVUSD device user agreement signed by a parent/guardian and ready to turn in at iPad Pick Up. This form is included in this informational packet. Please read about the Device Protection Plan at the bottom of the page. Returning Sophomore, Junior, and Senior MRHS Students: All returning MRHS students still have their iPad from last year. We understand that this device is an important piece of equipment for learning. We also understand that some students have an older device that isn't working properly, it doesn't hold a charge, etc. Returning students have an opportunity to exchange their current iPad to receive one that will work properly and get a new charging brick and cord with the iPad. Visit mrhs.dvusd.org to sign up for an appointment for either July 20th or July 21st. Students will need to bring their completed 2020-2021 DVUSD Device User Agreement to iPad Exchange. After July 21st, students who need to exchange their iPad will schedule an appointment.

Mountain Ridge High School Electronic Policy Teachers will clearly delineate when and how students can use their device in their classrooms. They will teach and model digital citizenship so that students learn how to responsibly use information and content available on these devices. Misuse or unauthorized use by students will result in disciplinary consequences such as loss of device privileges, loss of credit, and/or referral to the office. Students are solely responsible for the proper use and security of any personally owned electronic device that they bring onto DVUSD property or to DVUSD sponsored activities. Students should not share or loan electronic devices, including their district-owned and maintained iPad. If they do, they may be held responsible for any misuse of that device by another, just as though it had remained in their possession.

Students should understand that they bring electronic devices on campus at their own risk.

DVUSD and Mountain Ridge assumes no liability for the loss, theft, or damage of any personally owned electronic device on campus. The use of personally owned electronic devices on campus will not be allowed to interfere with the learning process of any student or with the instructional process of a teacher while in the classroom or on campus. Any such interference will be considered a disruptive activity.

We highly recommended that your MRHS student enrolls in the Optional Device Protection Plan. The DVUSD Optional Device Protection Plan offers students the opportunity to pay a $25.00 non-

refundable fee that will dramatically decrease the costs associated with paying for a damaged school issued iPad. The fee can be paid online or at the MRHS Bookstore.

The full details of this program are included with the DVUSD Device User Agreement.
