INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE CONDUCT OF ORAL EXAMINATIONS

ADMINISTRATION OF THE ORAL EXAMINATIONS
1. English teachers will administer the oral examination.
2. Where possible, English teachers should not interview their own students.
3. The oral examination should take place within the two-week period scheduled for the practical examinations.
4. The Division of Educational Research and Evaluation has provided topics and questions for conversations, along with scoring guides.
5. Materials relevant to the examination must at all times be treated with the strictest confidentiality.
6. Administrators should ensure that all candidates are made aware of the form that the examination will take and the date and time they will be examined. Each student will be examined for 5 10 minutes.
7. Schools should ensure that the arrangements for the conduct of the examinations are satisfactory. The examination room should be as quiet as possible and should contain adequate accommodation for teacher (a table and chair) and student (chair).
8. All copies of the final mark sheets should be submitted to the Division of Educational Research and Evaluation through the Examination Section, Ministry of Education immediately on completion of the examination of all students.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR EXAMINERS
Examiners should:
Provide candidates with the topics 10 - 15 minutes before the examination, in the presence of an examiner. Collect these following the interview.
Ensure that students are comfortable.
Use the questions provided on the selected topics as these are meant to guide the interview.
Ask additional follow up questions for clarification.
Remember to speak audibly, in a slow and deliberate manner to ensure that students hear and understand the questions.
Use the scoring guide and mark sheets provided to record students scores.

Introduction
1. Good Morning / Afternoon How are you?
2. Tell me something about yourself. (Elicit here, the students name, age, address, number of members in family etc.)
Questions on Youth and Crime
3. How do you feel about youths committing crime?
4. What are some of the crimes committed by youths?
5. What are some reasons youths become involved in crime?
6. Tell me how a youths life can change if he or she becomes involved in crime.
7. How can schools help youths turn away from becoming involved in criminal activity?
8. How is crime affecting our country?
9. What do you think are some solutions to the crime problem?
10. What can you do to reduce crime in our country?

TOPIC TWO: VALUES - RESPECT
Introduction
1. Good Morning/Afternoon How are you?
2. Tell me something about yourself. (Elicit here the students name, age, address, number of members in family etc.)
Questions on Values: Respect
3. What do you understand by the word respect?
4. Can you describe some ways in which you practise respect to others? (Please elicit here how respect is shown to parents, elders, authority figures etc.)
5. Is it important to respect yourself? (If yes, say why and how. If no, say why).
6. Have you ever disrespected anyone or has anyone ever disrespected you? Tell me about this, how you felt or how you think that person felt.
7. If the same situation arose again, what would you do?
8. Is respect for the environment important? (If yes, state why and how. If no, state why and why not).
9. Tell me ways you can show more respect for your country.

The movie industry is a huge part of todays entertainment business.

6. Do you prefer to see movies at home or at the cinema? Why?
7. Who is your favourite movie star?
8. What do you like best about the star? (Elicit here a quality/characteristic that young people can aspire to.)
9. Tell me about something in a movie that greatly affected you? How? Why?
10. Do you think young people should be allowed to see any movie they choose? Why do you think so?

Introduction

2. Tell me something about yourself. (Elicit here students name, age, address, number of family members etc.)

4. Tell me some reasons that a healthy lifestyle is important.

6. A healthy lifestyle includes recreation. What do you do for recreation?
7. What are some healthy foods that we should eat regularly? Why?
8. Is breakfast an important meal for a student? Why?/Why not?
