On Thursday 27th February, Rotherham United
CST hosted the Spring NCS Graduation
Ceremony at the New York Stadium. To kick off
the evening Jamie Noble and Lynsey Lockley
introduced special guest Deputy Mayoress
Councillor Maggi Clark and her husband Peter
Clark. Stephen Norman - FLT NCS Regional
Manager, Matthew Hanley - FLT NCS and Javed
Ahmed NCS National Provider Manager also
attended the night, with BBC’s The Voice Jessica
Steele headlining the evening’s entertainment.
During the ceremony participants were
honoured for their hard work, dedication and
overall achievements throughout the course of
the programme. NCS participants also received
fun and personalised awards, the categories of
which were decided for and voted by the young
people themselves. These included NCS Queen,
NCS King, NCS Future Leader Award, NCS smiler,
NCS helping hand, NCS comic and many more.
The ceremony provided outstanding coverage
of the spring programme itself through films and
pictures. Representatives from the organisations
that the young people had chosen to do their
Social Action Project’s for also attended the
evening and spoke about the impact the
projects had on their local community. Headway
Rotherham representative Annette Brown spoke
of the fantastic support they received from the
young people involved in NCS by helping to raise
awareness through producing a film and
promoting Headway Rotherham on social
media. Libby Hicken of Rotherham Borough
Council also spoke of the fabulous regeneration
work done by NCS participants on Greasbrough
Library’s Garden. The participants worked
together to revamp the library’s neglected
exterior into a World War One memorial garden.
The night also recognised the efforts of our NCS
Graduates. Hassan Bhatti and Jordan Mangnall
who took part in NCS last year as participants
returned to the programme this year as Assistant
Team Leaders. They provided continued
enthusiasm, motivation and support to both
participants and the team leaders as they were
able to return on the programme and develop
themselves in both a personal and professional
capacity.
Javed Ahmed, NCS National Provider Manager,
added “Overall I was incredibly impressed with
the evening and it was certainly worth the drive
from Peterborough! This has to be one of the best
NCS Graduations I have seen and I have
visited many graduation events across the
country”.
For the second year running RUCST ran an Interschool
Futsal Tournament for Y11’s in order to raise awareness
for our education programme. Our BTEC Futsal
scholarship invites both boys and girls to combine a
BTEC qualification while playing futsal against fellow
Premiership and Football league clubs. The
Interschool Futsal Tournament took place at Wingfield
School last week and was attended by 6 secondary
schools with over 60 students taking part. Wingfield,
Wickersley, Wath, Clifton, Oakwood and Thrybergh all
played their part in an enjoyable afternoon of futsal.
“The skill levels on show were of a high standard and
played with great sportsmanship” – Andy Warrington,
Futsal Coordinator.
Thrybergh were clear winners by winning 4 and
drawing the other with Wingfield coming second in
the league.
Special thanks to Wingfield School for allowing us to
host the tournament and our level 3 futsal students for
refereeing and score keeping.

The Y12’s are getting some really good game time as
they are playing on a weekly basis and improving.
Recently the B team showed great togetherness in
difficult circumstances due to injuries and not having
any subs against a good Sheffield United team that
have been together for almost 2 years.
The lads found themselves 3-0 at half time. Our keeper
Jordan Robinson started the comeback early in the
second half with a strike from distance that rocketed
into the top corner and to prove it wasn’t a fluke he
repeated the same effort 5 minutes later. The lads
equalised with 5 minutes to go from Tommy Stringer
but conceded a 4th soon after. Most teams would
have then given up but the lads added an equaliser
from Tom Daly for the second time in the last minute
to finish 4-4 in one of the best games seen in a while.

The students from Wath Primary School had a blast
running around the New York Stadium solving maths
clues using their acumen to pip the opposing teams
to the post. During the afternoon the children then
analysed newspaper reports and sky sport internet
documents enabling them to put together and
present their verdict to the rest of the teams. Carole
Foster, Alternative Curriculum Tutor for RUCST said “It
has been a wonderful day, the children have
thoroughly enjoyed themselves and it never ceases to
amaze me the talents that you see in such young
children. Today they have put into practice so many
positive skills that will enable them to progress in life
such as speaking, listening and presentation skills
whilst, also developing their numeracy and literacy
skills”.

This spring saw 30 young people from Rotherham
embark on their own NCS adventure which started
with a three night, four day Residential at Ravenstor in
the Peak District. Participants took part in a range
activities including mountain walking, canoeing,
abseiling, caving, capture the flag and fire building.
These activities challenged participants and
encouraged them to ‘step outside of their comfort
zone’ in order to develop as a team and shine as
individuals.
Participants were also
able to experience
the freedom
and excitement of
living away from
home, some of them
for the first time! Beth,
16, described NCS as a “fantastic experience” which
gave her the chance to “try new things, meet new
people and make new friends for life” that she
wouldn’t have otherwise had the chance to do.
On the back of their buzz from
Residential, participants
embarked on the home
phase of the programme.
Participants undertook a one
day training course with the
Yorkshire Ambulance Service
at My Place, Rotherham and
obtained a three year
qualification in Emergency
First Aid. They also attended
interactive workshops
provided by RUCST which
consisted of project management, equality and
diversity training, CSE training and introduction to
coaching. These were geared towards developing
our young people in both a personal and professional
capacity, equipping them with the skills and
experiences needed bolster their CV’s and UCAS
applications!
During the home phase of the programme,
participants also attended a Dragon’s Den style
presentation whereby senior representatives from
local charities and organisations in Rotherham came
to talk to the young people about what they do for
local the community as well as identified where they
needed support from willing volunteers! Those in
attendance included Libby Hicken from Rotherham
Borough Council and Annette Brown from Headway
Rotherham. Participants listened to what they had to
say and then between them decided on which
organisation they wanted to assist and how they
wanted to help them, making up their very own Social
Action Project for the NCS!
Team 1 decided to work with Rotherham Borough
Council working on the memorial garden at
Greensborough Community Library. Participants
brought together their shared skills and experiences to
plan and deliver a regeneration project, turning the
library’s neglected exterior into a World War One
memorial garden. They would like to say a big thank
you to Eastside Hydroponics for sponsoring this project
as well as to Home Flair for their kind donation!
Team 2 wanted to help Headway Rotherham raise
awareness in the community of the work they do and
the services they offer to those directly and indirectly
affected by brain injury. They attended several
Headway Rotherham activities and utilised their time
by asking questions to headway users. They then used
the knowledge they had gained to create an
awareness video which is available to view on
YouTube at the following address:

As part of our Children In Need health work, we
have been working with our young adults to
develop the awareness about eating disorders.
The week commencing February 23rd was
‘Eating Disorder awareness week’. B-eat is the
UK’s leading charity that supports anyone who is
experiencing an eating disorder. The charity aims
to change the way everyone perceives eating
disorders, improve the way services and
treatment are provided and to help anyone who
thinks they cannot beat their eating disorder.
The charity plans to do this by recognising and
challenging the stigma and stereotypes that
people who have eating disorders face. B-eat
also plans to campaign for better services and
treatment. Not only does the general public
needs to be inform but the people with eating
disorders do too! B-eat often support you through
the process of treatment and recovery. They
believe that no one should have to deal with
eating disorders alone.
We decided that this was a great initiative and
got involved with the ‘Sock-it to eating disorder
initiative’ sock it came about in a peculiar way;
a grieving mother wiping away her tears
regarding the loss of her daughter through
anorexia by using a clean sock. A charity was
then born under the name ‘sock-it’, the focus
particularly on raising awareness regarding
eating disorders and the severity of the condition
it entails. They intend to promote awareness by
teaming up with B-eat. Celebrities including,
Stephen Fry, Victoria Wood and Jake Humphrey
will be posing on social media wearing ‘silly
socks’ to advertise the awareness week.
In light of this, Rotherham United Community
Sports Trust decided to do the same, at
Blackburn Youth Club and The Place Youth Club
in Eastwood, we decided to make a ‘sock
bunting’ and design our own socks that said
something good about ourselves.
For example Kaine one of the boys who attends
regularly on a Monday night at Blackburn youth
club wrote “I am confident” on his socks. It is all
about changing our opinions on body image, we
focused on the positive factors about our bodies
and personalities rather than the negatives. We
also spoke about recognising the symptoms of
eating disorders and how we could help people
with eating disorders and where we would
signpost them to if they needed help.
Everyone got involved which was brilliant to see,
even the youth workers got involved, and we
raised awareness using social media platforms
such as twitter and Facebook.

Rotherham United Community Sports Trust saw
an amazing February Half-term Millers’
Masterclass with approximately 150 participants
at Wickersley School and Sports College and
Eastwood Indoor Centre. The kids enjoyed every
minute of the soccer camp and were fully
engaged in the activities.
Rotherham United FC players Paul Green and Kirk
Broadfoot surprised the kids at Eastwood Indoor
Centre and Adam Hammill, Matt Derbyshire and
Craig Morgan at Wickersley School and Sports
College. The kids were excited to get their
autographs and photos taken, while having the
opportunity to ask as much questions as they
could during the questions and answers session.
On the last day, the kids received Rotherham
United FC prizes.
James Rawlinson, Sport Development Officer
commented, “It was a great half-term soccer
camp, although short on staff Millers’ Masterclass
was a success! I would like to thank all the
parents and volunteers for their great support.
Keep an eye out for the upcoming Masterclass.”

Thorpe Hesley 1 – 0 St. Bede’s School
The G4S quarter final began at a slow start as
both teams got their head into the game. Thorpe
Hesley soon kept a keen hold after having a
couple good attacks repel by the defence.
Thorpe Hesley broke the dead lock with a
scuff long shape shot that caught St Bede’s
by a surprise. St Bede’s tried their best to rally
back into the game but Thorpe Hesley
defence stood strong and ended the match
with a score of 1 – nil.
We would like to thank both schools for
participating. Up next is the G4S Trophy semi-
final where St. Mary’s Herringthorpe
and Thornhill Primary go head-to- head
during the half-time at the Rotherham United
V Millwall match 0n Saturday 28th February,
2015.

THORPE HESLEY
ST BEDE’S
Thornhill V St. Marys
The G4S Trophy Semi Final kicked off half-time during
the Rotherham United V Millwall match on February
28th. It was clear that both teams were very nervous as
a place in the final was at stake. The game started
very slowly as neither team seemed confident
enough to attack for the fear of being exposed.
It was clear that it would take something special to
break the deadlock and St Marys provided this on the
5 minute mark when the striker rolled a defender and
fired a shot low and hard into the bottom corner. St
Marys confidence then grew and they attacked and
hit the bar twice in quick succession.
Thornhill came up with their own piece of individual
brilliance against the strike of play when the striker
picked up the ball almost on the throw in line and fired
the ball pass the St Marys goalkeeper from an
impossible angle. This did not phase St Marys too
much as they continued to press on and hit the bar
with a spectacular overhead effort.Neither team
could find the winning goal and the match went to
sudden death penalties. When Thornhill missed the first
shot and kicked it to the left to Declan Mullane who
tuck the ball home and send St Marys into the final.
