INTRODUCTION
GeographyandTimePeriodDatacollectiononcitiesandneighbourhoodsbeganin2005witha5-yearSSHRCCommunityUniversityResearchAlliance(CURA)grantfocusedonTorontowithWestNeighbourhoodHouse(formerlySt.ChristopherHouse)astheleadcommunitypartner.ThepartnershipwasbasedattheCentreforUrbanandCommunityStudies,UniversityofToronto(laterrenamedtheCitiesCentre).In2012,anew7-yearSSHRCPartnershipGrantwasawardedtocontinuetheneighbourhoodchangeanalysisnationallyandinternationally.WithanexpandedresearchagendatheNeighbourhoodChangeResearchPartnership(NCRP),nowhousedattheUniversityofToronto’sFactor-InwentashFacultyofSocialWork,expandeditsdatacollection.DatacollectionandorganizationfromtheCanadianCensus(1971,1981,1991,1996,2001,and2006)ismainlyfocusedatthecensustractlevel(aproxyforneighbourhoods),usingvariousformatsthatfacilitatemappingandanalysisinaGeographicInformationSystems(GIS).TheCensusMetropolitanAreastheNCRPhasfocuseditsdatacollectiononare:Halifax,Montréal,Ottawa,Toronto,Oshawa,Hamilton,Winnipeg,Calgary,Edmonton,andVancouver.SomedataisavailableforotherCanadianCMAs.Inaddition,astheinternationalcomparativeneighbourhoodtrendanalysisoftheNCRPdevelops,dataonanumberofmajornon-Canadianmetropolitanareaswillbecollectedwithpartnersinthoselocations.WecurrentlyhaveincomedatafortheChicagoMetropolitanArea(1970–2010)thankstoourpartnershipwiththeNathalieP.VoorheesCenterforNeighborhoodandCommunityImprovementattheUniversityofIllinoisatChicago.Asignificantportionoftheprimarydatahasbeenacquiredfromthe1971to2006CensusProfileseriesviatheUofTDataandMapLibraryServiceandtheChassCensusAnalyzer.SomecustomcensustabulationshavebeenpurchasedbytheNCRP.Thisissupplementedbyvariousothersecondarynon-censusdatasets.DuetothelimitedscopeoftheCensusin1976andtheabsenceofspatialdatafilesformappingpurposes,thereisnodatastoredforthatyear.DatafromCensus1986issparseandseldomusedasthereisaverylimitedvariableselectionandsomevariabledefinitionsareincompatiblewithdatainotheryears(recentimmigranttimeperiodsforexampleareinconsistent).Some1986censusboundaryfiles(e.g.,Calgarycensustracts)arenotuseablewithoutsignificantrepairs.SomeCMAshaveboundaryandwateralignmentissuesasthelevelofdetailvariesovertime.StatisticsCanadahasnotconsistentlyclippedtheboundariestoshorelinesforeveryyear1971–2011andinsomeyearsleftlakeholepolygonsintheboundaryfiles.Therehasbeensomegeometriceditingworkdone,particularlyinHalifax,toimprovetheboundariesforcartographicpresentationpurposesovertime.

MuchofthecensusdatacanalsobestudiedatotherscalessuchasDisseminationAreas,CensusSubdivisions(municipalities),ForwardSortationAreasandindividualhouseholds(microdata)butcomparisonsacrosstimemaybedifficultornotpossibleduetochangingboundaries,variabledefinitionsandotherfactors.
The2011NationalHouseholdSurveyTheNCRPdoesincludeNationalHouseholdSurvey2011datatablesinitsinventory.However,itisgenerallynotbeingusedduetoconcernsoverthereliabilityoftheestimatesproducedfromnon-randomsmallsamples(highnon-responserates)andthelackofcomparabilitytopreviousCensuses.MostresearchbytheNCRPthatreliesonthecensusis,therefore,limitedto1971to2006.WehavecarriedoutanalysesofhowNHSincomedatadiffersfromthatprovidedbytheCanadaRevenueAgency(taxfilerdata).Our2010andbeyondincomeanalysisusesCRAdata,nottheNHS.See:http://neighbourhoodchange.ca/2014/11/07/nhs/
