Gwen Gutwein grew up on a farm in Northwest Indiana and understands the beauty, heritage, and nostalgia wrapped up in barns. When she began to notice the disappearance of these structures from her landscape, she made a conscious decision to capture them forever on canvas. Thus, she set a goal to paint two barns from each of the 92 counties in Indiana. Be- cause of her energy and ambition, along with some funding from the Indiana Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts, she has already completed paintings of barns in 32 counties. In order to complete this extensive project, Gutwein has developed a distinct process. She begins with detailed research on each county, through which she selects specific historical barns. After making contact with each barn owner, she paints en plein air (or outdoors) for sev- eral days to capture the correct lighting, color, mood, and character of each barn. Measure- ments, statistics, and stories are also gathered while on site. Gutwein says; "the Barn Project, with all its facets, is focusing attention on the perilous situations and demise facing most of our rapidly dwindling treasures... our barns." Gwen Gutwein holds a Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts from Indiana University and has studied painting in several locations throughout the United States, as well as in Greece and Italy. She has received various awards for her paintings and a number of her works can be seen in private and public collections across the country. Gwen Gutwein: Barns of Indiana

Homage to a Disappearing Aspect of the Indiana Landscape

On Display April 19-May 29 at NCPL Central

This spring, Noble County will be hosting an art

exhibit of 50 original oil paintings of historical barns throughout the state of Indiana painted by renowned

Fort Wayne artist, Gwen Gutwein. The Noble County Community Foundation has partnered with the Fort

Wayne Museum of Art to bring the "Barns of Indiana" exhibit to the county. The paintings will appear at the Community Foundation, the Noble County

Public Library, the Kendallville Public Library, and the Ligonier Public Library from April 19th to

May 29th. The works can be seen during regular business hours of each location. Gutwein will discuss her project in detail at a public reception to be held at the Community Foundation on

May 6th from 4-7pm. Gwen Gutwein grew up on a farm in Northwest Indiana and understands the beauty,

heritage, and nostalgia wrapped up in barns. When she began to notice the disappearance of

these structures from her landscape, she made a conscious decision to capture them forever on canvas. Thus, she set a goal to paint two barns from each of the 92 counties in Indiana. Be-

cause of her energy and ambition, along with some funding from the Indiana Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts, she has already completed paintings of barns in 32

counties. In order to complete this extensive project, Gutwein has developed a distinct process.

She begins with detailed research on each county, through which she selects specific historical

barns. After making contact with each barn owner, she paints en plein air (or outdoors) for sev-eral days to capture the correct lighting, color, mood, and character of each barn. Measure-

ments, statistics, and stories are also gathered while on site. Gutwein says; "the Barn Project, with all its facets, is focusing attention on the perilous situations and demise facing most of our

rapidly dwindling treasures... our barns."

Gwen Gutwein holds a Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts from Indiana University and has studied painting in several locations throughout the United States, as well as in Greece and Italy.

Tales to Share Family Huddle

By Payton, Eli, & Archie Manning Illustrated by Jim Madsen

Family Huddle looks into the childhood antics of the famous football family, the Mannings. In this story

Payton, Eli, Cooper, and Archie Manning play football like you’ve never seen it before, family-style. Fol-low along as one afternoon they all pile into the car for a trip to visit their grandparents. The boys joke around and play foot-

ball every chance they get; in the yard, in the car, and even at the firehouse. Read this book and be impressed by their childhood plays; the buttonhook, quarterback sneak, and hook and ladder! ~Staff pick and review by Mindy Patterson~

Once upon a time, there was a quiet little village in the French countryside, whose people believed in Tranquilité - Tranquility. If you lived in this village, you understood what was expected of you. You

knew your place in the scheme of things. And if you happened to forget, someone would help remind you. In this village, if you saw something you weren't supposed to see, you learned to look the other way. If perchance your hopes had been disappointed, you learned never to ask for more. So through good times and bad, famine and feast, the villagers held fast to their traditions. Until, one winter day,

a sly wind blew in from the North...
