Dail candidate for the local area, Joe O’Brien (GP) told the County Leader; “It would be devastating news for Swords and for the workers and the families of the workers. It’s very much counter to what we’re hearing from Government parties at the moment about economic recovery and more jobs and better jobs. So this is a piece of reality running counter to all the empty election promises that we are currently hearing. I would also say that it underlines the fact that this Government has also not addressed the economic vulnerabilities that were there five years ago, namely our dependence on multi nationals and the lack of supports for indigenous business.” He went on to say; “Government support is very high in terms of multinational corporations. It needs to be reoriented towards local businesses and supporting them, and getting credit flowing again for local business, so that we can create local jobs that are more sustainable and stronger and less vulnerable to being pulled.” Continued on page 4 Joe O’Brien Minister Reilly’s Constituency Office Unit 3, First Floor, Chamber Buildings, Swords, Co. Swords StudentsSwitched On ToEnergy SavingsStudents at Loreto College, River Valley in Swords are workingvery hard towards winning a Green Flag for Energy. Their mottois ‘A Little Effort can save a lot of Energy.’Teacher, Mary Gorman told the County Leader, “There is quitea lot involved in going for a Green Flag, as you are required toprove that you are working on a project for two years, beforeapplying for one. We already have our first flag, which is for

Waste and Litter and we must make sure to keep this flag inorder to apply for a second one. We have been recycling andwe went on to examine our energy consumption in the school,”said Ms.Gorman.The students had a look at how they were using electricity andheat and they formed a committee. They had to go throughseven different steps in order to apply for the Green Flag. There was no election for girls to join the committee.Ms.Gorman went on to say, “We seemed to be consuming a lotof energy and following our environmental review, we formu-lated an action plan, which must have achievable targets. Ourmain target was to reduce our energy consumption by 10 percent. We would spend up to 500 units of electricity per day, costing €100.”In order to reduce this figure, the school had a ‘Switch Off’campaign where students were encouraged to turn off lightsand a colour coded system was introduced, pointing out

switches that could beturned off, or left on.“We noticed that muchof our electronic equip-ment is on standby, with no real power offswitch. Systems left onstandby can use up to30 per cent electricitywhile lying idle. Weraised awareness of thisamong teachers and weintroduced a DeadSwitch campaign at theend of the day, meaningthat items are switchedoff. It really makes agreat difference and thestudents are lookingforward to getting muchneeded school equip-ment with the savings.

ALL WORKGUARANTEED

As the sun shinesmore often and theflowers begin tobloom, people spendmore time outside, forinstance in theirgardens or picking upsome hobbies l ikegoing for a walk withtheir dogs along thecoast or for a picnic toone of the many parksin the area. But springis also the time to

clean your house frombottom to top – fromthe basement to thekitchen and thegarden up to the attic– and make it ready forthe good weather tocome.

MAKE IT A GAME

Everyone knows whatthe beginning ofspring means: House

cleaning! Many peoplemoan at the thought ofthe big clean up, but ifyou know the rightway of doing it, it isn’tthat annoying as itseems first. The solu-tion is: Try to create itwith fun! Listen toyour favourite musicwhile cleaning andinvolve the wholefamily! And if you do itas a kind of game,

nobody would say itwas boring! Who findsthe funniest things ormemories in somehidden corners of thehouse? Who is the onewho finishes first?Who managed it tostay the least dirty ofall? Or who looks likea duster aftercleaning? There willalways be somethingto laugh about, if youarrange it like a littlecompetition, Have alot of fun at your‘spring cleaning’!Throw away old thingsyou don’t needanymore – or givethem to a charity! Soyou would hit twobirds with one stone. One hint: Don’tforget to cleanyour windows!

IT’S THE LITTLETHINGS

As soon as youhave finishedcleaning yourhouse, thrownaway things youdon’t need anymore or giventhem to charityand maybe discov-ered forgottentreasures in thelast corner of yourattic, think of whatyou would like tochange. It doesn’talways have to behuge changes, ofcourse you canchange floors andbuild new walls butit’s the little thingsthat will make you feelmore at home. If youfound some oldphotographs, whydon’t you buy someframes and hang themup in the living roomor in the hall?Drawings from niecesand grandsons can beput on the fridgewhere they look niceand remind you of thegreat family you haveeven when you arecooking.Flowers are another

great way to spreadsome colour. Whetheryou buy some to put ina vase or a whole newpot, the house is sureto look fresher. If you

don’t really havegreen fingers, let thelocal florist help you

with some plants thatdon’t need muchattention.

GARDEN

Apart from yourhouse, think aboutyour garden. Plantsome colourfulf lowers and seedsthat wil l grow tobecome vegetables(they don’t only lookgood, they are alsohealthy). If the winter weatherdestroyed yourgarden table andchairs, i t is t ime tobuy new ones. However somedamage isn’t too bad
