Global Cancer Burden

• Cancer is a global epidemic and a leading cause of death worldwide, accounting for 7.6 million deaths or around 13% of all deaths in 2008.

• Worldwide, cancer now causes more deaths than HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria combined.

• More than 70% of all cancer deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries.

Center for Global Health At-a-Glance• The NCI Center for Global Health (CGH) was established in 2011 to:

Cancer Control Plan

• Awareness– Cancer is a critical health issue– Majority of cancer deaths in women occur in low-middle income

countries, not among the rich

• Prevention– Common risk factors-tobacco use, unhealthy diet, excessive alcohol consumption and

lack of physical activity

• Diagnosis: – Priority for early detection and diagnosis when cancer is at a treatable

and potentially curable stage

• Treatment– access to affordable, effective drugs and vaccines, and to palliative care
