Step Up To The Plate: A Culinary ExperienceJoin us for a
food & wine fundraising voyage hosted at the
stunning Thompson Chicago in Chicago, Illinois
on Saturday, September 9th 2017. Guests will be
taken on a culinary journey showcasing the tastes of Nico
Osteria’s Italian-seafood menu, which incorporates divine
house-made pastas, impeccable seafood, delectable meats and
exceptional Italian wines. This will be an evening
overflowing with award-winning food, wine and philanthropy at its
finest.
We are honored to have as our Emcee Chet Coppock, a
legendary Chicago-based sports talk personality, American radio
broadcaster and television broadcaster. Coppock was inducted
into the Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame in 2013 and honored with
the Jack Brickhouse Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016.
Coppock is set to publish his fourth book in Fall 2017 and
currently hosts the Chicago Blackhawks Heritage Series.

Facilitator Conference 2017The Joe Niekro Foundation was
incredibly excited to host the 2017 Facilitator Workshop at the
Penumbra Headquarters in Alameda, CA from June 8th-11th. A total of
18 primary facilitators and co-facilitators, along with JNF staff,
were flown in from across the nation (including two from our
Canadian group) for an in-depth, intensive training workshop.
We presented on topics such as how to build relationships with
your local community, the importance of social media in outreach,
how to line up guest speakers and more. We also had group
discussions on past experiences running support groups, best
communication methods, how to publicize support groups, etc.
Facilitators left the conference with a strong understanding of
how to build a successful, effective group! We look forward to
expanding our support groups throughout the rest of 2017.
2nd Annual Joe LaScola Memorial 5K Walk!Sunday, September 24th,
2017
The Joe Niekro Foundation is honored to support the 2nd Annual
Joe LaScola Memorial 5K Walk! The 5K Walk will take place on
Sunday, September 24th at Eldorado Park in Scottsdale, Arizona.
We anticipate walkers and spectators both locally and nationally
to help us honor those we have lost to brain aneurysms as well as
celebrate the survivors who fight tirelessly every day in their
recovery.
Joseph Harold LaScola (“Josh/Joe”) lost his life from a sudden
cerebral brain aneurysm on his 50th birthday, September 23, 2015.
The 1st Annual Joe LaScola Memorial 5K Walk was held on September
25, 2016 to honor those we have lost to this devastating condition,
as well as celebrated the survivors fighting everyday to
recover.
Funds raised from participant sales will be used to benefit The
Joe Niekro Foundation, whose commitment is to support patients and
families, research, treatment and awareness for brain aneurysms,
AVMs and hemorrhagic strokes.

Pitch In For a Purpose
The Joe Niekro Foundation was excited to bring to Colorado
Springs for the first time, our event Pitch in For a Purpose on
Saturday, May 20th! It was an evening filled with laughter,
delicious cuisine and philanthropy!
We were honored to pay tribute to those who have lost their
lives to brain aneurysms, AVMs and hemorrhagic strokes and honor
the survivors who fight every day to recover. We were
especially honored to have Survivor Speaker, Connie Sanders whose
speech deeply moved attendees.
We were grateful to the beautiful Garden of the Gods
Club for their incredible generosity and beautiful venue,
Goose Gossage for emceeing the event, Lindsay Mintenko for her
participation, XTRA Sports radio 1300 for their live radio
broadcast and support, JNF Chairman of the Board Gary Simms
and event chair Lisa Simms for their hard work.
The Gala: An Evening Benefitting Brain Aneurysm & AVM
Research
The Joe Niekro Foundation was incredibly honored to collaborate
with The Aneurysm & AVM Foundation and Mission:BRAIN for our
first 3-way cooperative event, The Gala: An Evening Benefiting
Brain Aneurysm & AVM Research, emceed by Actor/Director Zach
Braff. Proceeds from the event will brain aneurysm, AVM and
hemorrhagic stroke research and awareness, as well as neurosurgical
care in third world countries.
JNF’s Facilitators, who were in town for the Facilitator
Conference, had the wonderful opportunity to mix, mingle and enjoy
this beautiful evening.
We are deeply grateful to our William L. Young Achievement Award
recipient, Dr. Michael Lawton, The Aneurysm and AVM Foundation and
Mission:Brain for helping us make this event an incredible and
beautiful evening!

the founder’s father, Joe Niekro, who lost his life from a sudden
ruptured brain aneurysm on October 27, 2006. The astonishing lack
of pubic awareness and under-support of research of such a
widespread and often fatal condition led to the launch of a crusade
to educate and encourage awareness about cerebral disorders. The

factors, causes and treatments of these conditions while funding
the advancement of neurological research.
