NCEA INFORMATION EVENING
• Levels 1-3 are of approximately the same standard as senior secondary education and basic trades training
• Levels 4-6 approximate to advanced trades, technical and business qualifications
• Levels 7 and above approximate to advanced qualifications of graduate and postgraduate standard
The National Qualification Framework (NQF) has 10 Levels
Assessment
Collecting and evaluating evidence (credits) to establish the level of a student’s performance against the national standards

External (November examinations or portfolio)
Level 1 Certificate
Students need 80 credits from Level 1 or higher.
These credits must include 10 in literacy and 10 in numeracy.
Year 11 students are studying 7 subjects, with each subject offering 19-24 credits, so approximately 140-150 credits.
It is possible to go on and study some subjects at level 2 while completing a Level 1 certificate.
Level 2 Certificate
Students need 80 credits.
20 of these can come from Level 1.
60 must be from Level 2 or higher.
Most Year 12 students therefore need to gain 60 out of approximately 120 credits.
It is possible to go on and study some subjects at Level 3 while completing a Level 2 certificate
Level 3 Certificate
Students need 80 credits.
20 of these can come from Level 2.
60 must be from Level 3 or higher.
Most Year 13 students therefore need to gain 60 out of approximately 100-120 credits.

University Entrance

14 credits in three approved subjects Level 3
Literacy requirements of 10 credits (5 reading and 5 writing) at Level 2
Numeracy requirements of 10 credits at Level 1
Preferential Entrance - Otago
have achieved NCEA Level 3 awarded with merit or excellence
have achieved the IB Diploma with at least 26 points
Rank Score - Auckland All applicants will be ranked on their best 80 credits (at Level 3) over a maximum
of five approved subjects.
(NB: all QMC subjects are approved)
Rank Score• Excellence = 4
• Merit = 3
• Achieved = 2
• Therefore maximum total will be out of 320 (80 x 4 = 320)
Guaranteed Entry Requirements - Auckland Admission criteria includes total from rank score.
Some examples for entrance in 2017:
- Engineering 260 (33 in IB)
- Health Sciences 250 (33 in IB)
- Architectural Studies 230 (31 in IB)
- Science 165-200, depending on speciality (26-29 in IB)
- Commerce 180 (27 in IB)
- Arts 150 (26 in IB)
Students must strive for Merits and Excellences.
