Bits & Pieces

Volunteers needed!! The city of La Palma has once again asked for our club's participation providing "Dignitary Vehicles" for their Annual La Palma Days Parade, which combines with the Orange County Veterans Parade, on November 10, 2007. This is a very nice parade, well organized by Mr. Ken Blake, a car enthusiast, who has been coordinating this parade for many years. He has sent us a detailed invitation letter. If you have any questions please e-mail or call Ken Blake directly (ph. # and address on letter) or Rick Miller or Lynn Miller Rick suggests that, as in past years, we can start our fun filled half day of civic giving with a hearty breakfast together before heading to the parade's staging area.

Also in La Palma -- on October 20 -- their ever-popular Casino Night; thanks, Rick, for sending this information.

Save your "no-longer-wants" stuff for a Club Garage Sale that Donna Stewart plans to organize in late September or early October. Let Donna know how you can help. The proceeds will benefit Club activities and charities.

I would like to personally thank every single person who was involved in the success of our car show. Everyone should be very proud of a job well done. I would like to name every person individually, but I certainly would not want to miss anyone. When I first volunteered to chair this event, I was afraid of what I was getting into since I had never chaired a car show before. Those of you that have been involved in this show before were very understanding and steered me along the way. For that, I thank you. I have been involved in several organizations and I have to say that this club blows away any organization that I have ever been involved with. The participation of each and every one of you is incredible and the club should be honored to have members like this. Usually there are only a couple of people who usually step up, but when the day of the event was here, I could not believe everyone who volunteered their time to make this event a success. I wish I could do more than just say Thank You as words just don’t seem to be enough for what everyone did. Just know that your hard work has allowed us to net approximately $5,400.00 . GREAT JOB!!!!! I am definitely proud to say that I am a member of Corvette Super Sports and each and everyone of you should be proud as well. This is a tremendous organization. Respectfully submitted, Tom Noonan Cruisers Corner Vegas Vettes Ed and I went out to Las Vegas over the Labor Day weekend to participate in the event Vegas Vettes put on and had a really great time. The members of Vegas Vettes were so nice and friendly they made us feel welcome. There was some kind of mix up in the judging at the car show and we were the last car to be

judged it didn’t help that the battery was dead on the car and we couldn’t open the truck for judging. Needless to say we didn’t place in the show. The day of the races everything was going along pretty good when the time clock stopped working so they had to find three stop watches to time the races the old fashion way. Ed took first place in his class. Then to top the weekend off they gave us the hardship award because of our dead battery and the judging snafu. Ed and I will definitely go back next year and we hope some of our club members will be able to go with us, it is well worth the trip. Next year they are planning on having it in April, it should be cooler ☺ Ed and Linda Norris Day of Wine and Roses - Temecula Attending Corvettes of Temecula Valley's "4th Annual Day of Wine and Roses" proved to be another good time for CSS members in attendance. Gary, Ron, Karen, Art, Marjorie, Jill, Scott, Renita, Geoff, Ginger, Cindy, Joe, (+ designated drivers for Cindy's car) Lynn and Rick met at Keno's and headed south promptly at 7 a.m. The ride there was easy, traffic mild, Cal Trans cooperative (no SR-91 closures) and we arrived at the South Coast Winery eager to take on what turned out to be their toughest gimmick rally to date. Is a horse on a gate a sign? The drivers' meeting took place on schedule at 9:45 and the first car left at 10 a.m. With cars spaced about a minute apart all were on there way by 11. As usual the country side was beautiful, the rally directions led us up and down hills, thru twists and turns, in and out of valleys, along side vineyards and past horse farms, all the while we were hunting down clues and answering trivia questions. By the way, when was the 1st engine block heater offered in a Corvette? Uh Uh no cheating!! The route never repeated itself, yet we passed the same cars numerous times in both directions, go figure. Having returned within the given timeframe, all headed for the buffet. What a spread, chicken, hot dogs, deserts, cheeseburgers, salads, potatoes, deserts, more potatoes, breads, deserts, wine and yes desert. Well done, now roll me out to the parking lot, I gotta see if I won any raffle prizes, but wait, they're announcing the 50/50 winner, Congratulations .................................. Geoff Girvin from CSS, nearly $400. Yahoo! Okay, it's time for the Raffle. Scott and Renita win a '94 ZR1 (more on this later), Geoff and Ginger are toting a very nice Wine basket, Lynn's happy with her new C6 travel mug and there's more but I can only remember Joe winning the silent auction for the fuel injectors. Joe, I still want to buy them if you can't use them. Raffles over, it's time to hear the Rallye results. Congrats to Scott and Renita for their 6th place finish in the Gimmick Rallye with only a minus of 8 pts! Ron and Karen scored well finishing within a couple minutes of the Hidden time for a 4th place trophy in this category and Joe and Cindy capitalized on one of the two Poker contests for yet another proud CSS moment. To top it all off Corvette Super Sports won Club Participation Award. Wow! While it was great to receive a trophy all who attended felt they were winners, what a terrific day. Nice rose in your hat gimpy! We left the winery and headed home, scratch that, we headed to another Winery. Wine tasting, 6 glasses for $8 or was it 8 glasses for...........anyway pretty much the whole day was wine, wine, wine, but nobody complained. Okay, now we head for home...... but first how about the Hungry Hunter for Dinner and Drinks. Awe why not, Geoff's buying, or at least he tried to. Oh yeah, about that ZR1 that Scott and Renita won, ........................................ it's a promo model. Check the website for pictures.

Tech Corner - Changing from Run Flats to Standard Tires Over the years, the Run Flat tires have been a compromise for the Corvette Owners who do not have spare tires. The Advantages: You can drive the car for limited number of miles with a flat tire. The Disadvantages: You can’t drive the car with a flat tire. The run flats are much more expensive than standard radial tires. Due to the stiffness of the sidewall, the ride is rougher. Traction and handling are not as good as a standard radial due to the same sidewall stiffness. It should be noted that when the Z06 came out in 2001 and ever since, they have had Goodyear F1 Supercar tires that were not run flats. So in lieu of the run flats, you got a battery powered air compressor and a can of flat fix. So when it came time to replace the tires on Cindy’s 2002 Coupe, I decided to replace the run flats with Kumho MX radial tires (the same street tires I was running on the Z06). When I compared the cost of the Kumho MX vs. Goodyear run flats, it was $825 vs. $1,500, so from a price standpoint it was a no brainer. I went to Pep Boys and purchased a flat tire kit that had a 12 volt compressor and flat fix for around $30, which compared to what the Z06 comes with. I also recommend that you also carry a flat tire “Plug Kit” that has strings of rubber, insertion tools, and some rubber cement to fix a nail or screw hole in the tire. The only caveat is rumor has it that if you use the liquid flat fix in a tire with air pressure sensors it ruins the sensor (the Z06 does not have pressure sensors, the C5 & C6 Coupes & Convertibles do). So you want to try the plug kit before the liquid flat fix. The bottom line is, if it’s more than a nail or screw you are going to need a new tire and won’t be able to drive on it with any kind of tire. Now for the driving impressions, WOW, the tires are much quieter, the ride is softer and the car handles better. The car is much better in transitions from left to right due to the more flexible side walls. It drives like a whole new car! I highly recommend this change if you can justify living without the run flat feature. Go see Ron’s Wholesale Tire in Stanton, he has an ad in the Corvette Super Sports Newsletter for the Kumho Tires or any other brand you prefer.

Racers Corner

Jake, the C6.R COVETTE RACING TEAM MASCOTT, Behind the Corvette Race Car C6.R Skull Logo

The Corvette Racing factory team cars and uniforms sport a skull logo named “Jake.” A GM trademark, Jake was born at Le Mans in 2004. The C6.R Racing Mascot was inspired by a flaming skull drawing and a "take no prisoners" message scrawled on the Corvette pit wall at Le Mans in 2004. Jake has been on the winning Vettes ever since - both at Le Mans and in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS). This year, at the 2007 race, "Jake" celebrated his third 24 Hours of Le Mans. Today, Jake is everywhere–including on crew members’ shirts and on the ground for the team’s pit stalls. The demonic skull-and-C6 logo appears on the ALMS/Le Mans Corvettes’ nose and tail plus on the B-pillars. Besides appearing on larger areas of Corvette Racing’s C6.Rs, the skull is seen on T-shirts, signs, stickers, tattoos, jewelry, and its own Corvette-funded Web site: badboyvettes.com. The acceptance at GM-Corvette has been so good, that a commemorative poster of Jake appears in Corvette’s two-story Le Mans hospitality estate in France. NCCC and NCM Happenings

This is a reminder to all members that the 2008 club dues are due starting September 4th. Deadline date for dues before being delinquent is October 2nd. After that it’s an additional $10.00. Paid Teresa Cruz by mail at 11808 Newgate Ave., Whittier, CA 90650 or during the next meeting.
