    This course has been designed in close consultation withindustry to provide a sound working knowledge of a wide varietyof skills that will prepare the apprentices to work competently onsite.Sprayed concrete is an essential component of the moderntunnel construction process. Sprayed concrete is, as its namesuggests, applied by high pressure spraying equipment andforms the lining of the tunnel. This Apprenticeship will providethe necessary skills to become a sprayed concrete operative inthe tunnelling and underground construction industry.

    Course programme• Functional skills• Mathematics• English• Communication.

    An induction programme• Employment responsibilities and rights• CSCS training and the CITB Health, safety and environment

    (HS&E) test

    • Drug and alcohol awareness• Mobile towers• Fire ghting• Safe use of ladders• Manual handling (certi ed)• Safe use of plant and tools.

    Practical training• Interpreting diagrams and technical drawings• Mixing and batching concrete• Operating and maintaining sprayed concrete equipment • Spraying concrete in a tunnel• Slinger/signaller

    • Concrete (mixes, volumes and placing).

    Construction DiplomaThe course includes apprentice training in ConstructionTechnology. This provides apprentices with a wider base of bothskills and knowledge of the construction industry and will includetraining in:• Interpreting information• Estimating resources

    • Basic building methods• Building elements• Building materials.

    Entry requirementsDepending on an employer’s requirements, candidates may berequired to complete a Skills Learning Exercise, and some willneed to attend the college for further tests.

    Qualications/certication• Level 2 Construction Diploma in Sprayed Concrete• Level 2 NVQ/SVQ Diploma in Sprayed Concrete• Level 1 Essential Skills• Employment Responsibilities and Rights

    • CSCS card• Tunnel Safety Card (TSC).
