President’s Column
Well I guess Winter is officially over and
Spring has begun. It is a great time of year to do antenna work before the leaves fill the trees and I have been doing just that planning
a place for an new off-center fed dipole. After a few tries with the slingshot, I finally got the
line over the branch I wanted. Speaking of off-center fed dipoles, we used
the club’s new one during the NC QSO Party and it worked great hanging between the two
light poles at the Health Department. Page four has the summary of the QSO Party, but let me tell you it was a great first year partici-
pating in it. We contacted forty-two counties including our own in the state and made a
number of contacts to other states plus a few DX. And a big thanks goes to James O’Hern, AD4XX, from Red Springs who came with Bill,
W2NJK. James had a great time making our CW contacts. James was entertaining the guys
sending and receiving all those dits and dahs. James, we welcome you back anytime. At one point, we had four antennas up and four sta-
tions operating. Jim, K4BRO, made a couple of contacts on his radio and rotatable dipole, and
Bob, KK4YBJ, tried 15 meters on his long wire, but was unsuccessful. Band conditions just were not good on 15 meters and up that day.
The weather was fantastic as we operated out-side and thanks to Bill for the refreshments.
The Digital Techniques gang was at it again
during the QSO Party. Bill, KW1B, Chris, KA3LGR, Ben, KJ4DEM, Mark, KI4KQZ, and our other Mark, KJ4ZEK, had a full lab setup for
testing and troubleshooting different radios, TNCs and soundcard interfaces. The guys are
still experimenting at different locations around the county trying to find the right spots to place digipeaters so everyone can connect to

Call to order/Pledge of Allegiance: The monthly meeting of the Moore County Amateur Radio Society
was held at the Moore County Health Department in Carthage, NC on February 18, 2016. The meeting
convened at 7:00pm, J Hammond presiding over the Meeting.

J Hammond, Dean Stockwell, April Hammond, Ernie Bryant, Tripp Johnson, Raymond Arnold, Severt Ja-
cobson, Cindy Wackerman, Bob Mason, Carl Williams, Ben Griffen, Chris Kushay, Susan Kushay, Jim
Johnson, Lionel Bryson, Bob Biamonte, Tom Kimball, Bill Barrett, Max Muse, Mark Galyean, Bob Nichols
Guests: Donna Nichols

Johnson to approve the minutes report from the January 21, 2016 meeting. Motion Carried.
Treasurer’s report: Motion was made by Carl Williams and seconded by Ernie Bryant to approve the
treasurer’s report from the January 21, 2016 meeting. Printed reports are available upon request. Mo-
tion carried.
Pre-Meeting Presentation: None
Announcements: Most announcements are made by the meeting leader unless otherwise stated.
Winter Field Day went well. Some good contacts were made, and were able to do some digital
training and learning. Many thanks to Bill Barrett, Mark Galyean, and Chris Kushay for their
help in getting field day running.
Unfinished business: None
ARES:
Uwharrie Mountain Run was February 3, 2016. All went well as could be expected with no run-
ners hurt or lost. This is the 25th Anniversary of MOCARS providing radio and tracking ser-
vices for this race. There were some issues of who is actually heading up the ham radio ef-
forts for this race. Lionel and the race directors are discussing this matter. We, as a club,
need to decide weather to continue providing our services or get out all together. More infor-
mation to come at next meeting.
Old Business:
Wednesday Night net - at the last meeting, it was suggested that we quit having them due to
low number of check-ins at the time (are down to 2). Since the January meeting, the number
of check-ins has increased to at least 8 to 10. So, for now, we will continue the Wednesday
night nets as long as the participation continues. Anyone wishing to call a Net on either night
is welcome. All you need to do is contact Dean or Ben and schedule it. We can also set up a
calendar so that EVERYONE takes turns all year.
New Business:
Red Cross has asked for our help to install a new radio in their truck. More at next meeting.

April made a suggestion that the club get our own mailbox. Reason being that all mail is go-
ing to their home at the moment and if something happened to them the club would not be
able to get mail. Jim Johnson made a motion that the club get our own mailbox and motion
was seconded by Max Muse. Address and cost will be posted in next month’s minutes.
Suggestion was also made at the February meeting that all files, passwords, codes and club
materials be kept in a secure, neutral location. Dean spoke to Robert Whittman about getting
a locking cabinet at the Health Department to keep these items and will contact Robert again
to see where we stand on this issue.
NCQSO Party is February 28, 2016 from 10a to 8p. MOCARS will be participating. Those wish-
ing to eat together before getting started can meet at Pete’s at 7:30a and go over to the
Health Department shortly thereafter to put up antenna and radios.
Bill Conradi made suggestion, through J, that the club members set up a Saturday morning
eat and yack section for other times than the meetings. No plans were made at the meeting
for this gathering time.
Charlotte Hamfest is March 12–13. All wishing to go, get on the repeater and talk to your fel-
low hams and make plans to go.
Adjournment: Motion made to adjourn by Jim Johnson and seconded by Bob Nichols and was approved
by a voice vote.
Meeting Adjourned: 8:00pm

President’s Column
the network. It will not be long and I think the net-
work will be complete. Tune in to the Digital Tech-
niques net following the MOCARS Sunday night net.
Well MOCARS has had a great start to the new
year with many events and projects and we hope to
keep them coming. There is talking about having
an Antenna Day soon and the Southern Pines
Springfest and Carthage Buggy Festival will be tak-
ing place during the next couple of months. And of
course the ARRL Field Day in June which we will
start preparing for very soon.
This Saturday, March 19th, MOCARS will hold its
bi-monthly VE session at the Health Department in
Carthage at 9:00am. If you are ready to upgrade
your license, come on out Saturday morning and
take the test. The cost is $12 and you need to
bring a copy of your current license with you.
Some of the examiners meet for breakfast at Pete’s
around 7:30am if you would like to join them.
That is it for this month! Sorry I will not be at
the meeting Thursday. I will be at another Disaster
Relief training event with the NC Baptist Men.
Dean or April will be leading the meeting. 73, J
