Bonner Bridge: Originally built in 1963 at $4 million. As much as $50 million was spent between 1987 and 1999 to repair and protect the bridge from the ocean. The bridge was due for replacement in the early 90’s. Preferred Alternative selected in 2010 (Phase I) Design Build Contract was awarded in 2011 to PCL Civil Constructors, Inc. at a bid of $215.8 million. NOW: $246 million after adjustment for delays and design changes. Contract was delayed due to environmental lawsuits brought by Southern Environmental Law Center. In June 2015, agreement was made by all parties in the lawsuit. March 8, 2016 Governor McCrory broke ground on site marking the official beginning of construction Since Spring 2008 till Fall 2015 we have spent a total of $26 million of repairs to the existing structure.
