Domestic Violence Forum Program

CHIEF JUSTICE RICHARD BARAJAS

Chief Justice Richard Barajas (Ret.) is a native of El Paso, Texas. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree and his Juris Doctor from the Baylor University. He has been admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of Texas, the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas, the United States District Court for the District of Columbia, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, the District of Columbia Court of Appeals, the United States Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces, and the United States Supreme Court.

Chief Justice Barajas has made helping victims heal his life-long professional mission. He has served as the national chair of the NOVA Task Force on Identity Theft, a task force to examine the effects of victimization of identity theft and services, which may be afforded those crime victims. A nationally recognized lecturer on the proper balancing of the constitutional rights between the criminal defendant and the intended victim, Chief Justice Barajas was honored by the President of the United States at a White House ceremony as a national recipient of the Presidential Award for Victim Services. He has advised the Department of Justice, Office of Victims of Crime and the Office of Violence Against Women on issues relating to human trafficking. In addition, he is a frequent victim-based lecturer on topics relating to the criminal justice system; essential leadership qualities of an effective victim advocate; the proper balancing of the criminal justice system; identity theft and the military; prosecutorial ethics and victim rights; the First Amendment and victim advocates; stages and consequences of victimization; hate crimes and implicit bias in the criminal justice system, among other prevailing topics.

ARA OHANIANOffice Head, Douglas County Regional Office, Colorado State Public Defender

Ara was raised in Rochester, NY. He attended college at Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania and law school at the University of Denver Sturm College of Law. After graduation he was hired by the Colorado State Public Defender’s Office. He interned in the Denver Regional Office, was next placed in the La Junta Regional Office, was next placed in the Sterling Regional Office, and was next placed in the Douglas County Regional Office. Ara was promoted to be the Managing Public Defender of the Douglas Regional Office in 2013 and has been in that position ever since.

ALLISON ROCKER

For more than a decade, Allison was a Senior Deputy at the Denver District Attorney’s Office and the Domestic Violence Prosecution Specialist at the Rose Andom Center - a collaborative center that houses both community organizations and government agencies which work together to end domestic violence.  She is now the Assistant Director of the Prosecution and Code Enforcement unit at the Denver City Attorney’s Office and oversees all the treatment and rehabilitation courts.  She trains nationally and internationally on all aspects of the criminal system and domestic violence.  Prior to trial, she usually practices her opening argument in front of her dog, Kalla, who tends to provide very little in the way of feedback.

MICHAEL A. MASONSenior Vice-President, Chief Security Officer, Verizon CommunicationsMichael Mason joined Verizon in 2008 as the company’s Chief Security Officer. He oversees & coordinates global security efforts throughout Verizon, including enterprise wide security strategy and programs, physical security, cyber security, legal compliance, investigations and law enforcement matters. In 2010 the department created a very effective Insider Threat Program which has grown from utilizing six employees in 2010 to almost 100 today. In 2014, Mr. Mason was recognized by Security 500 Magazine as one of 2014’s Most Influential Security Executives.

Prior to Verizon, Mr. Mason was an Executive Assistant Director with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, in charge of the Bureau’s Criminal, Cyber, Response and Services Branch. In 2004, Mr. Mason was the recipient of a Presidential Rank Award for Meritorious Executive Service. He began his career as a Special Agent working investigations ranging from undercover narcotics cases to general crimes and public corruption. Mr. Mason was the Special Agent in Charge of the Sacramento Field Office and subsequently the Assistant Director in Charge of the Washington Field Office, the FBI’s second largest field office.

SABRINA SAMESHIMAAttorney, Immigration and Citizenship Law, Kelly Ryan Law, LLCSabrina joined Kelly Ryan Law in 2013. She practices immigration law exclusively in Colorado and is licensed by the Minnesota Supreme Court. She is a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association and the Asian Pacific American Bar Association. Sabrina volunteers with the Asian Pacific Development Center, Denver Public Libraries and Metro State University of Denver Migrant Services Program.

Sabrina represents clients before the US Citizenship and Immigration Services, the Executive Office of Immigration Review, Board of Immigration Appeals and the Department of State. She earned her juris doctor from the University of Wyoming College of Law. As a law student, the University of Wyoming recognized Sabrina with the prestigious Internationalization Award. She earned bachelors’ degrees in Sociology and Spanish Literature with a minor in Ethic Studies from the University of Colorado. Sabrina learned Spanish fluently in Monterrey, Mexico. Sabrina previously worked with the Rocky Mountain Immigrant Advocacy Network, the Center for International Human Rights Law and Advocacy, and the Executive Office for Immigration Review (Immigration Court).

DR. CHRISTOPHER WILSONDr. Chris Wilson is a licensed psychologist and internationally recognized speaker and trainer from Portland, Oregon. For the past sixteen years he’s worked with victims and perpetrators of crime, including for seven years with the Oregon Department of Corrections. He currently trains nationally and internationally on a variety of issues including the neurobiology of trauma, vicarious trauma, and trauma informed interviewing, and testifies as an expert in both civil and criminal trials. Dr. Wilson is the Director of Training for Certified FETI (Forensic Experiential Trauma Interview), and a guest faculty member at the US Army’s Special Victim Capabilities Course, teaching military criminal investigators about the neurobiology of trauma. He recently served as a curriculum consultant for The National Center for Campus Public Safety.

His audiences include: judges; attorneys; civilian, campus, tribal, and military law enforcement officers; college and university Title IX administrators and investigators; victim advocates; and, mental health professionals. He’s provided training, plenary, keynote, and breakout sessions for conferences and organizations across the United States, Canada, Italy, and Denmark, including the National District Attorney’s Association, US Department of Justice, the US Department of the Interior, the US Navy, Marine Corps, Army, and Air Force, the US Office for Victims of Crime, End Violence Against Women International, the National Organization for Victim Assistance, the National Crime Victim Law Institute, and law enforcement agencies including the New York Police Department. Dr. Wilson received his doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from Pacific University and is a past board member of the Oregon Psychological Association.
