Foreword

Solving the recruitment conundrum is one of the current issues the global mining industry is

facing. An estimated number of 10,000 new workers will be needed over the next 10 years as estimated

by the Mining Association of Canada. Through the engagement with miners of tomorrow, mining

companies can benefit from building up their own talent by looking at graduating students.

This booklet is a compilation of current resumes that were submitted by interested

undergraduate students that are currently enrolled in the Mining and Mineral Processing Engineering

Program at the University of British Columbia. Undergraduate students’ resumes have been collected to

create this booklet which serves as a source for professionals within the mining industry looking for

upcoming talent.

Bachelor of Applied Science – Mining Engineering

TECHNICAL WORK EXPERIENCE

Rio Tinto – Diavik Diamond Mine January – August, 2013

Underground Technical Services – Ventilation

Performed both primary and auxiliary ventilation surveys routinely throughout the work term, analyzing and issuing the respective mine-wide system dynamics for each time period

Mapped the mine’s underground compressed air pipe network by hand, recording major infrastructure including both surface and underground compressors, underground piping, valves and drop headers

Modelled the entire system using PIPE-FLO software, constructing a balanced flow organization that is beings used to predict future mine requirements and determine solutions to issues surrounding compressed air availability

Analyzed air flow patterns in drift headings, creating a profile that illustrated the velocity distributions, which lead to improvements in surveying technique that more accurately reflected the drift conditions

Designed sublevel retreat blast patterns in Vulcan, created drilling instructions using Ore Manager software and

posted all relevant drilling/blasting progress maps

Vale – Thompson Operations May – August, 2012

Underground Blasting Specialist

Initiated and managed a blast optimization project focused on reducing the number of production blasts per block through obtaining accurate drawpoint measurements with which to perform reliable void calculations

Blasted hung ore passes using specialized blasting equipment, enabling production to be reestablished

Performed analysis on blast vibrations both in the surface quarry blasts and underground production blasts

Managed the introduction of a new blasting product for all mines at the Thompson site, including experimentation of the new product, composition of a formal mine-wide memorandum announcing the change, and completion of the company-specific management of change procedure

Monitored old pit slopes using prism technology and surveyed the tailings dam and tailings outflow pipe

Taseko Mines Ltd – Gibraltar Mine May – December, 2011

Surface Drill & Blast Engineer

Managed the production drill fleet by designing drill holes in MineSight, constructing patterns through the Aquila Drill Management System and communicating current priorities directly to the drillers on the ground

Designed the blasthole loading plan and worked with Orica Mining Services to ensure full production through formal meetings and accurate powder forecasts

Designed better production blasts using SHOTPlus-i blasting software in conjunction with the ikon detonators to optimize fragmentation

Managed all blasting paperwork including loading sheets, tie-ins, blast radius maps, drill maps, explosives count sheets, ikon logs and cost analysis sheets

Created an Excel workbook that optimized Gibraltar's Drill & Blast engineering process that is still used daily to manage all pattern/bench designs and plans

Prepared the Daily Mine Report during the first month of my work term which involved compiling Wenco data using Excel macros and working with operations to provide an accurate report of the previous day's KPI's

Page 22: NBK Resume Booklet 2013 2014

TECHNICAL PROJECTS

Feasibility Project Manager Ongoing

Leading a team of 5 undergraduate engineers from different backgrounds, such as mineral processing or mining

Creating a mineral deposit model from drill hole data and economically analyzing the best-case scenario through multiple iterations of an NPV based approach to cut-off grade and mine life

Ensuring all environmental factors are considered including post-processing, infrastructure and land use

Void Analysis: Blasting Optimization at Birchtree Mine August, 2012

Initiated a blast optimization project with the primary objective of reducing the total number of blasts within an underground ore block which would result in realizing economic gains through increased operational efficiency

Performed preliminary data collection and composed a technical report detailing recommendations toward project implementation and future research and testing

Mine to Mill SR&ED November, 2011

Planned a test production blast that used a larger diameter drill bit combined with tighter spacing to increase the powder factor that would generate higher fragmentation in order to see increases in mill throughput

Measured the financial results and compared mill throughput gains against increased drilling and blasting costs

Cost Analysis for Blasted Waste Excavation October, 2011

Analyzed the shovel loading costs and bucket fill levels for two areas of harder rock on different benches, one directly below the other and loaded with more explosives

Compared the blasting costs associated with using more explosives to increase rock fragmentation and the costs saved through ease of digging, faster scooping and efficient bucket filling

OTHER WORK EXPERIENCE

Jawl Properties Ltd. May – Sep, 2010

Material Handler/General Labourer

Laboured alongside journeymen carpenters and learned from their techniques and practices how to erect concrete forms for curbs, sidewalks and walls

Operated the service elevator during the later phase in the building's development resulting in an increase in my responsibilities, which required an organized schedule detailing the priorities of loads to be lifted

Reduced the amount of dust particulate released into the work environment via vacuums, wet rags and polyethylene drapes, as required through LEED certification specifications

Cleaned the site of used materials, and organized the working area so that the tradesmen could safely and efficiently carry out their responsibilities

Assistant Chief Women’s Alpine Slip Crew

To whom it may Concern:

During the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics Robert Leigh worked for me as youth volunteer on the slip crew for the

women’s alpine ski events. Our Job was to help ensure that the track and hill were kept in race condition throughout the

event. Due to difficult weather conditions the slip crew was asked to work extra hours above the regularly scheduled 8

hour shifts. We were often required to start as early as 3:30am and work up to 14 hour shifts in adverse weather

conditions. Throughout the event Robert was always on time for his scheduled shifts and often volunteered to work

longer hours when it was required. He was a very hard worker and was quick to learn his roll on the slip crew. I was

very impressed with the commitment, motivation and work ethic that Robert gave to the slip crew. I believe that he

would make a valuable contribution to any team and would not hesitate to work with him in the future.

Sincerely,

Brady Holliday
