CAD/CAM workstation network is IBM-compatible

CGX Corporation's Graphics DisplaySystem 2001 is an IBM-compatible network ofinteractive workstations designed to performmainframe-based CAD/CAM tasks. The2001 permits users to mix up to 16 raster andmonochrome vector terminals on a single-cable network up to two miles long as a resultof its multiprocessor-based one-on-one ar-chitecture, which incorporates a dedicatedgraphics processor in each workstation.

The system is capable of running eitherfrom the IBM series 360/370, 3OXX, and43XX family or the IBM plug-compatiblehost mainframe computers. The basic systemincludes a 2010 channel unit, a 2020 vectordisplay station, and a 2030 color-rasterdisplay station, all of which have built-in self-diagnostics for off-line testing.

The channel unit controls the interface be-tween the graphics application software pro-gram and the display stations, passing host-supplied data and control information atspeeds up to IM bps to each workstationalong the coaxial cable.

The vector display station and the color-raster display station emulate the IBM 3250graphics display terminal and are each de-signed to provide the interactive responsespeeds required by other IBM-compatibleCAD/CAM graphics software. Each stationincludes a light pen, an adjustable 32-key pro-grammable function keyboard, and an alpha-numeric keyboard. Both displays can drawsolid, dotted, dashed, and dot-dashed linesand contain 96-character EBCDIC sets withnine special engineering symbols to emulateIBM 3250 small, medium, basic, and largecharacter sizes.

A typical Graphics Display System 2001configuration consisting of four 2020 vectordisplay stations, four 2030 color-rasterdisplay stations, and a 2010 channel unit ispriced at $299,000. Individual componentprices are $23,000 apiece for the channel

units, $27,000 for each vector display; and$42,000 for each color-raster display. BothOEM and end-user quantity discounts areavailable; delivery is 120 days ARO.

VaxlUnix systems develop andmanage software

SMDS, Inc., has announced the availabilityof its Aide-de-Camp software engineering en-vironment. The ADC system manages soft-ware and information about software in adatabase and provides on-line, interactive in-formation about software to developmentengineers.

Written in C and currently available onVax/Unix systems, the ADC can be used todevelop software written in any language. Itfacilitates and enforces software documenta-tion, automatically collects informationabout software being created, and producesprinted reports. ADC maintains softwaresources and all changes to that software in adatabase. Software changes are treated as log-ical units, which can be added to or subtractedfrom a named base version. New versions canserve as base versions for future development.A single ADC database contains all versionsof the software being maintained and all in-formation about that software captured bythe system or input by the development team. The information management side of the

ADC system captures and maintains informa-tion on named entities, codes, changes, ver-sions, external documentation, and otherdata.

Single-site licenses are available for $42,000.An annual support contract including updatesand telephone hot-line support is also available.

Synergy Printer Systems' Multi-mode line printer performs data processing, letter quality, andgraphics functions in a single system and is compatible with most DEC, HP, Burroughs, DataGeneral, and IBM computers. In the data processing mode, Multi-mode operates at 300 or 600Ipm; in the near-letter quality mode, at 85 or 170 Ipm; and in the graphics mode, at 1200-2400 or2400-4800 dot Ipm. Multi-mode costs $6000; delivery is four weeks ARO.

Module correlates computerand video camera data

The Viccur from K-Systems, Inc., is a videotiming product designed for military, law en-

forcement, and civilian applications. Theprinted circuit module combines the functionsof a video inserter for alphanumeric time codeand titling, IRIG-B reader, time-of-dayclock, and cursor generator.

Viccur's on-board microcomputer readsIRIG-B modulated timing, using the extractedtime to initialize a time-of-day clock. BCDtime of day is constantly copied to a parallelBCD output port for connection to a com-

puter and is inserted onto one line of alphanu-meric video annotation. A second line of ti-tling data is under control of an external com-puter or other parallel ASCII source, or may

be turned off.Because Viccur receives power only from

the backplane and is not interfaced to the bus,it can be used as a stand-alone device and withmany types of computers. The compact mod-ule is portable and provides logging (with a

video recorder), annotation of video tapes,

and correlation of computer and camera data.Viccur costs $1500; quantity discounts are

available.

Multiuser micro system runseight- and 16-bit software

Compupro's four-user multiprocessormicrocomputer system permits concurrent ex-

ecution of both eight- and 16-bit industry-standard software, uses a dedicated central8088 processor to handle system resources andoxerhead, and has four Z80B processors forindividual tasks.

Standard features of the Compupro 10 in-

clude the 8MHz, 16-bit 8088 CPU with 768Kbytes of main memory, seven serial ports in-cluding a modem port, a Centronics printerport, 384K bytes of solid-state disk memory,

and dual 96-tpi, 5 l/4-inch floppy disks storing2M bytes. In addition, there are four eight-bitZ80B user processors, each with 64K RAM, in

the 7 x 17 x 21 -inch unit.According to the manufacturer, an en

hanced version of Compupro's MP/M 8-16CP/M-based operating system enables users

to access more than 3000 business applicationprograms. Compupro 10 also comes bundledwith a selection of financial spreadsheet, wordprocessing applications programs, and a

database management system. The system costs 54995, excluding ter-

minals priced at $1800 each.

Interface sends/receives RTTY, ASCII, and CW signals

The MFJ-11224 computer interface unitfrom MFJ Enterprises, Inc., permits VIC-20,Apple, TRS-80C, Atari, TI-99, and Com-modore 60 personal computers to be used ascomputerized RTTY/ASCII/CW stations forsending and receiving. The unit transmits andreceives radio teletypewriter and continuouswave signals when used with a transceiver.During reception, the 1224 converts the CWor AFSK tones into computer-compatibleTTL-level signals so the computer can trans-late and display the signals on a CRT screen. In the transmit mode, the computer generatesthe signals that are converted by the interfaceinto AFSK tones from RTTY or into CW key-ing for CW transmission. The unit copies on both mark and space and

contains both an automatic noise limiter forsuppression of static crashes and a demod-ulator for maintaining good copy on slightlydrifting signals. An eight-pole active filter for170 Hz shifts and allows good copy under

crowded, fading, and weak signal conditions, according to the company.

The MFJ-1224 uses Kantronics software, which features a split-screen display, a1024-character type-ahead buffer, 10 messageports with 255 characters each, status display,CW-ID from keyboard, Centronic-type print-er compatibility, CW send/receive at five to99 wpm, RTTY send/receive at 60, 67, 75, and100 wpm, and ASCII send/receive at 110 and300 baud. In addition to the Kantronics-compatible socket, a general-purpose socketallows interfacing to nearly any PC with mostsoftware, the company states.

The unit is housed in a black aluminumcabinet with brushed aluminum front panel, measures 8 x 1/4 X 6 inches, and is availablefor $99.95, plus $4.00 for shipping and han-dling.
